Sorry I've been off of the radar of late. A few weeks ago I decided to light myself aflame with gasoline. Note: I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS. The burns are not nearly as painful as the process of treating the burns. I have a new found respect for those burn center doctors/nurses/assistants and my sympathy for burn victims is tremendous. I am now well on the way to recovery... and the good news (for me)... I've found time to sketch with splines again and have been really enjoying that. I need to find my mouse because splining with a finger on a laptop is a royal pain. Tuckertown is a project (of sorts) meant to be a drawn comic strip set in the late 1800s. The cha…

I saw a few days ago that they were redesigning Batgirl after darkness of the New 52. I saw the pics, and decided to roll with it. They are going for a more fun Batgirl so they can get away from some the darker sides of Gotham. The only thing I really don't like about the design are the boots, but I have decided to stay fairly faithful to their representation. I am at the point where all my pieces are separate and I will begin to add the detail. I have SSS on everything, and the only decals so far are on the eyes. The boots are placeholder, though they will look similar to the ones in the image. I can't find the original story where I found the images I was u…

All righty, I've been meaning to do this for sometime and am only now just getting around to it. As mentioned before, I am assisting with a project known as Star Trek: Red Squad. It's a 4 episode web series that is on its final episode. The basic premise is after the destruction of Romulus, Starfleet is training the cadets of Red Squad aboard the USS Enterprise (which is beginning to near the end of its tenure.) Suddenly, Red Squad is thrown into saving the quadrant from a mad man Romulan by the name of Deitrix, who is using wormhole technology to wipe out the Federation and all of its allies once and for all. Red Squad simply started as a test sequence of animat…

My instinct was to wait until I had a lot more of these done, but, I figured that it would be silly if there was a fundamental error in the more basic stuff which ruined everything more complex that followed. So, I'll post the first round of really basic ball bounces that I've been messing with. The goal is to work my way through basic exercises in an attempt to improve. Constructive critiques are encouraged (I am trying to get better)...thanks in advance for any pointers. This set of four starts with a ball drop without any squash and stretch, then a small amount of lateral movement is added, then squash and stretch is added and finally some roll is added. O…

Ball_640.mov Trying to do a series of 10-20 seconds 'briefs', one each week. This is the first. I need to change the composite on the third scene. using a shadows only render ( if I can remember how ) as there is a unintended mix of toon and non toon renders. When rendering a cookie cut decal in toon, it shows on both sides, only the one side in Final ? Any feedback welcome. regards simon PS should have mentioned. this is a VGA conversion of a 1080 render.

Ok, so... Humans aren't my modeling forte. Actually, modelling isn't my forte period. But, I have a character, and I know his personality quite well, so the trick is getting him on screen. His name is Peanut Butter. Don't knock it, my little bro named him. He IS modelled after a real teddy bear we have (hence, the personality). This is my first real model, and he needs a bit of work still. (With school and TWO, I haven't had a lot of time to spend on him.) Take a look and tell me what you think. The biggest thing that I've had to fight with is hair. Too much hair, and it won't render (and takes forever to render). Too little, and it doesn't look right. …

Thought it was a good idea to test the models before starting on the bigger project. It was a very good idea as it has proved to be a very bad model !!! The pajama's need redoing, as does the rest of the figure really. The idea was to set up the choreography of the dance, then use it to test the model when its redone ( hope that makes sense . Have been plugging away at it for about two weeks and this was the result so far. I now think the beginning needs to be speeded up... Any critical feedback very welcome. simon Take One.mov

I had to put aside the project of "Trem do Pantanal" because it is a big project that requires more labor (modeler, animator etc etc). Meanwhile I began a more modest project, a short film called "Lau". I present you, "Lau" the main character which gives the name of the short. The rendering style is the same image below. There will be 4 characters: Lau Baby Lau character 1 dog I'll concentrate all my efforts to complete this project later this year. Hi folks, I needed a character that I can compete with in animation competitions. So, I decided to build one with the goal of making it as universal as possible and, with David's help, will have the awesome rig used in TWO. I started with the head first. That's how I always start my drawings. Linguini, of Pixar's Ratatouille, is my inspiration. I'm following two DVD tutorials, relying heavily on Barry Zundel's (Bizzle) character modeling Disc 1, and augmnted with hints from William Sutton's Modeling a Gorilla tutorial. Your critiques and insights are most welcome.

Hi all, Haven't shown anything really new in a while, so here's a peak at my newest character, to go along with the elegant lady and gentleman I did a while back. He's sort of the head of the investigation agency. At least, that's how I see him now. And I think he says "Jolly good" a lot, too. I need to give him some thin hair on his head. Jim

a new client wants an animation which explains the order process of his new business idea, it´s a special kind of courier service. they want the animation to look like it´s a real cartoon, but it should also look modern & stylish. so right now i´m trying to find a style that looks like a hand drawn cartoon, but also modern and somehow hip & cool... i just took a character i had and retextured him (the characters in the animation will look different) and modeled a few props and buildings. it´s more about the general look and the render style first. any suggestions what might get it look even more cartoony? david, if you´re reading this: what would b…

After reading the latest Martin's Minutes about "Charlie Brown Books" I remembered that I modeled a Snoopy vs Red Baron a few years back using Lightwave and was curious to try the Lightwave importer with A:M. After re examining the model I decided to model him from scratch in A:M. I just get a kick out of the elegance of spline patches vs subdivision modeling it seems like you can say more with less. Here is some progress of the model so far... still working on the hands and feet and will be modeling a scarf next.

Thanks for the help on face rigging! Now I'm running into some issues with cloth. I'm having to move the top spline of the cloth group WAY far off for the simulation to run. Problem is, it looks ridiculous when it's like that because the top spline doesn't actually simulate, it just sits there (which I assume is what it's supposed to do). (2nd image is normal, 1st image is "safe" area. When I have the spline moved way out there, it works just fine.) The "deflector" group is the legs. The cloth tutorial I've seen linked when I did a search is a broken .AVI link and a lengthy .pdf which is pretty hard to follow without the video (it looks to be just a word-fo…

Yes another landscape. I haven't done much in A:M lately, creative block. I finally forced myself to start a new project. Still alot to do, but it's a start. This was just a test render at a low resolution and scaled up, so the quality isn't great, but it will give you an idea. The ground and water aren't textured yet and I still want to add a few more props and foliage.

OK Well, he's not exactly cute or endearing yet, I think the pupils are too tiny..... And I still have a few things to add. I think I will just give him paddle feet, or modify the hands and make feet out of those. I've made horns, I just didn't bother to put them on. I'll be putting some decals on him at some point, nothing too fancy just something to punch him up a bit. He'll still be clay shaded. One thing I am not entirely happy with is the snout....this one is true to my original sketches, I didn't want to have a beak or anything with teeth, like an alligator or t-rex. I guess I could give him like a little anteater mouth with a tou…

Will Sutton's Kong model is a great model. Awhile back I rerigged with the squetch rig, but when I imported the model into the rig, I lost the hair grooming (which is fixed now). Well, I finally came back to it and I redid the hair on the character. Unfortunately the squetch rig is an older version, so I'll rerig again to update it to the newest version once I get the hair right. The original Kong model looked a bit puffed out to me with hair turned on and rendered. So, I made a few changes to the model to suit my taste, most of it was to the hair material. Here's what I have to far.

It seems appropriate that a new year brings a new model. This one is a PCC (President's Conference Committee) street car from the middle of the last century. The design was the final attempt by all stakeholders in the street car industry to sell a fast, quiet, state-of-the-art vehicle to cities with street cars and withstand the spread of diesel buses. And we all know how that turned out. Once it has an interior, its going to be painted in a scheme similar to the Toronto Transit Commission which had the largest PCC fleet in the world and kept running some "Red Rockets" into the 90's.

So I saw this cool Lightwave tut for making 3D clouds for a planet's atmosphere, you know, those really gorgeous shots of planets that you can tell have 3d clouds and not just some flat texture map. Well anyways, I decided to take a stab at making it AMified. So far it's turning out well, though I've run into a bit of a bump with it. The bump being that I kind of want the texture to 'taper' at the top, to simulate the 3d effect of clouds better. Now in lightwave, they used something called a weight material. Obviously AM doesn't have that, so I thought I could simulate it by doing some form of transparent gradient. Basically make the top more transparent than the bo…

All the awesome contest entries got that itch going again. I thought I would do something a little different for me, a superhero that wasn't Spider-man -- and make her female . x-23 is the female clone of Wolverine, for those who don't know. I have basically forgot how to do everything, so it should be fun. I already have so many topics where I show me modeling from the very beginning, this one I already am up to having most of the body done. I started with a ref I drew on my iPad (1). I wanted to go more cartoony/real with this one. I thought my reference turned out fairly well so I tried to match it as well a possible. For the actual model I just ha…

I am starting a new WIP thread to consolidate everything. I will be posting in this thread as opposed to my old WIP thread. Currently the working title for the film is A Dragon's Love Story. This may change - I'm mulling over one or two other titles. The story in a nutshell: A dragon was once in love with a princess that rejected him. Realizing his treasure hoard no longer brings him happiness and he is leading an empty existince, he heads out in search of a mate. He searches high and low but cannot find one. He is about to give up when he finds love where he least expects it. I imagine completed length to be about 3 to 5 minutes. Both the main char…

Homepage for Ballet Pour Ma Fille: AppleSnake Original discussion thread: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=2288 -- Ok, the title to the old thread just sucked- can't figure out how to edit titles... so, new thread. Anyway, here's a simple little Fouette-type turn by RG, who is the dancer in the film. Animating ballet is very hard, I've discovered. It is not made easier when the proportions of your character are... not anything like a real ballerina. This took three days to get to this point, and I need to move on- though I'm not satisfied. Need to tone down her head a bit when it moves forward, and I may make her poses a little st…

I want to make a pteranodon. I gathered some reference to study. The boning of the wing is simpler than I though. it's just a few arm bones and one gi-normous pinky finger. I star by extruding and tapering the upper beak out from a spline ring... I duplicate the top, flip it vertically to make the bottom beak and connect it at the mouth corner... Stitch in a ring at a spline intersection ... Extrude it inward to form the eye socket...

Well I've had AM for 4 months and done too much goofing around. The ol' saying is writer's WRITE, so I guess animators ANIMATE! I've been so busy tweaking characters to be better than the previous version and worrying about rigging and things I can't do that it paralyzed me from doing much. So I decided to just rig something (since I have TSM2 anyway) and jump in and do something, so here's the start. I'm animating this as I go, but consider this version a kind of blocking, because I intend to go back and put in all the detail. Right now I want to get the short story down. It's been fun since it has been fairly quick to do to get it this far, maybe a few hours.…

Not technically a WIP just yet, but I wanted to start a placeholder thread. I'm going to have to put my "Nightcallers" work aside as it's the time of year when I have to start thinking about the company Christmas animation. I need to sketch out some ideas (I like to show three) and pitch them to my boss. Then it's off to the races. As long as it's creative and catchy, she's pretty flexible (see: the Christmas Snail) and likes me to have fun with it. This year I'm determined to center it on actual CHARACTER ANIMATION, yes I said it. So that's what I'll be pitching. Now I just need to come up with some ideas!

Hello, I am a " former( older ? )" (15 years) French user of AM. I followed the evolution of other interesting 3D software (3dsmax, carrara, blender, ...). Blender is becoming a major player in the 3D world, but I remember that Animation Master had great potential a few years ago. Its only major weakness was the slowness of its rendering. When we see the new rendering engines such as Arnold, octane, cycles, eevee, and many others! has it adapted to this development? I plan to reuse this software that I like by its very logical structure but with its protection system by machine key, I cannot test the trial version (windows problem?) Do you have opinions, advice or reflect…

I found that I get a slightly more believable driver response if I constrain the chest (at -50%) and skull (at +50%) to the bone that automatically aims the chassis and turns the steering wheel (see image). And about that null; for the whole rig to work it has to follow the same path as the car's model bone but stay centered between the front wheels. At present the only way I can figure out how do that is to set correctly chosen key frames for the ease of both the car and null. This is trivial if the ease timeline is a straight line from 0 to 100%. But it became trickier if the car changes speed during the chor. Can anyone suggest a way to constrain the null to the p…

The other night my youngest announced that she had a great idea for a Christmas short. She told the story of a Christmas tree that really wanted to go home to spend the holiday with a family of it's own, but was ultimately left in the tree lot all by itself. I liked the story, we chatted, and came up with a quick outline. I tasked Nicole to compose the soundtrack and I would start work on the models. We might not make it by the holidays, since the story has grown to include a lot of elements, one of which is the delivery truck below. Hopefully in a day or so I can put an animatic together to post up here. We could use some help if anybody wants to lend a hand in the story…

I have been wanting to get back to several ideas I have had. So yesterday I pulled up several character models created in ver 18 or 19. I am running the current version of AM and all the groomed hair was sticking straight up. Opened the model in 18 and it is fine. in version 19j1 the hair guides are groomed but the hair is sticking straight up. Also, all the maps either png or tga were no longer alpha channeled. I had several maps with color and bump maps. Has anyone else opened a previously created model with the hair issues?
