The other night my youngest announced that she had a great idea for a Christmas short. She told the story of a Christmas tree that really wanted to go home to spend the holiday with a family of it's own, but was ultimately left in the tree lot all by itself. I liked the story, we chatted, and came up with a quick outline. I tasked Nicole to compose the soundtrack and I would start work on the models. We might not make it by the holidays, since the story has grown to include a lot of elements, one of which is the delivery truck below. Hopefully in a day or so I can put an animatic together to post up here. We could use some help if anybody wants to lend a hand in the story…

I am starting a new WIP thread to consolidate everything. I will be posting in this thread as opposed to my old WIP thread. Currently the working title for the film is A Dragon's Love Story. This may change - I'm mulling over one or two other titles. The story in a nutshell: A dragon was once in love with a princess that rejected him. Realizing his treasure hoard no longer brings him happiness and he is leading an empty existince, he heads out in search of a mate. He searches high and low but cannot find one. He is about to give up when he finds love where he least expects it. I imagine completed length to be about 3 to 5 minutes. Both the main char…

Hello. I'm taking a short break on a personal project that I have been working on in Animation Master to work on this: I am almost finished with this but I still have a few things to go with it: * I need to finish the head by adding eyes, teeth and a tounge. * Finish the face. * Finish the hair. * Tweak the boots around the ankle area. * Tweak his butt. * Finalize his belt. * Rig it. * Model and rig his cape (I currently am using a rough stand-in now). * Add additional texture maps. I think that is it for now. My goal is to not get caught up in the details and finish this in another two weeks or so. I find that with my persona…

Even though my previous thread for this model is gone, the model itself still progresses. I've added all the male actors and tweaked the light levels. The only thing that's left is charcoal suited guy's red-headed companion. For the sake of finishing and moving on, I may just have her off-camera while leaving behind some props to imply she'll soon return.

Well I've had AM for 4 months and done too much goofing around. The ol' saying is writer's WRITE, so I guess animators ANIMATE! I've been so busy tweaking characters to be better than the previous version and worrying about rigging and things I can't do that it paralyzed me from doing much. So I decided to just rig something (since I have TSM2 anyway) and jump in and do something, so here's the start. I'm animating this as I go, but consider this version a kind of blocking, because I intend to go back and put in all the detail. Right now I want to get the short story down. It's been fun since it has been fairly quick to do to get it this far, maybe a few hours.…

Not technically a WIP just yet, but I wanted to start a placeholder thread. I'm going to have to put my "Nightcallers" work aside as it's the time of year when I have to start thinking about the company Christmas animation. I need to sketch out some ideas (I like to show three) and pitch them to my boss. Then it's off to the races. As long as it's creative and catchy, she's pretty flexible (see: the Christmas Snail) and likes me to have fun with it. This year I'm determined to center it on actual CHARACTER ANIMATION, yes I said it. So that's what I'll be pitching. Now I just need to come up with some ideas!

The modeling is 99% done but I'm going to see how much detail I can add with normal and bump decals. I'm really impressed with how well normal decal rivet heads hold up under fairly close scrutiny, as shown in the shot of the rear of the tender, even when they're next to the modeled rivet heads attaching the handrails and ladder. By modeling the decaled heads with a low profile their lack of self shadowing isn't obvious in sunlight at grazing angles. The only downside is you can't apply a left hand normal decal, mirror it and apply it to the right side since the "polarity" of the mirrored decal is wrong, as shown in the third image. So you have to generate left and r…

Yet another project to keep me from getting enough sleep...but lot's of fun nonetheless. This idea for a series was one I suggested as a project for the Atlanta AM User's Group. The idea was to use marshmallows as the characters and have all sorts of horrible and hilariously funny things happen to them "by accident". We would call the series the "Marshmallow Safety Films". Being such vulnerable creations, accidents are pretty easy to come by. Colin Freeman took a first crack at modeling one of the characters while I developed several story boards. Shortly thereafter Colin had to focus the Egyptian project he was doing at IBM, and we have not gotten the group togethe…

Ever since I made my image "The Satyr and the Apple" I had planned on making a full image on the subject. It will include a few characters in a outdoor forest grove that resembles a noble's court. Here is the link to the original "The Satyr and the Apple" pic: http://www.hash.com/stills/displayimage.ph...&fullsize=1 In the new image, I have redesigned the satyr's legs to something I like a little better. Right now all I have is decals on the cloth and eyes. SSS is on the skin. I will be adding decals later and hair will be added toward the end of the project. I will most likely be changing and/or adding clothing to the Satyr as I go along. Reflectivit…

My Webpage The site sort of explains it all better than I can here. Not expecting reams of critical feedback on it, but if you're gonna be real thoughtful about it, then go ahead. Been working on this monster for over two years (since May of 01)- so 2.5 years. It's your typical one man, one machine (well two and needing a third for the final rendering) sort of thing. And in 2 and half years I FINALLY get to post an image from the actual production. So there's proof that STICKING TO IT WILL GET YOU THERE- oops, not done yet, I spoke too soon! Oh one other thing: My focus for this film isn't (oddly enough) animating. It's more on design, story…

I just couldn't help myself. I took an Oz Map I painted in PS awhile back (#1). Then made a real quick, sloppy displacement map for it (#2). Then rendered (#3). It took about 16 minuted with 16 passes at this size to render. Original maps were 2000X3000. The "artifacting" you see in the mountainous areas is caused by the rivers gouging through them. Like I said, I didn't spend alot of time making the displacement map. I could probably make it look alot better, but just had to try out the new Displacement. Oh, and 1 patch was used.

So, here's the first stages of the head. I haven't got great references and so this thread is to ask if anyone has good ones I can use. Or knows of a good website.

Some of my pigs from Donark are going to Venice to share donuts and recipes. I made a model where my pigs and the Venetians can interact. Unfortunately, it won't be a happy visit. I have attached a picture of my model. It's still in progress, and there will be some additions and tweaking. Among the changes will be creation of a population of Venetians and the arrival of a ship of Donark pigs. The pigs will have an adventure like they've never had before. (I also should note that this model is really Venice-y. It's not really a totally accurate depiction.)

The modeling for the upper floor is complete. It was tougher than expected to deduce the third dimension of things based on their shadows so I ended up just making educated guesses. (My thanks to Mark Largent for his link to a building in New York on Google Street View. That was really helpful.) And there's no way I can reconcile the angle of the sign extending from the left of window #3 and the length of its shadow. Hopper more or less got the perspective of every component correct except for that sign. But hey, I'm no artist. I'm sure he had a good reason at the time.

I've decided to model a guitar. At first I wanted to model a car, but after several failed attempts, I decided to build something on a smaller scale to get used to the feel of the mechanical/organic style modeling used in both cars and electric guitars. I decided to model a fender Stratocaster a. Because I have a Strat knock off and b. Because strat's kick @ss I decided that I'd keep everyone informed on my progress and I'll make it into a mini-tute (I don't have the time to do an extremely in depth step by step). At some point I will probably compile it all and give it a permanent spot on my website. Remember that I'm not coming here as an expert, as much…

Hello, It 2011 and V16.0 coming up I'm going to open a mascot contest. The dead line will be 01/31/2011 and voting will began soon after that and last about 2 weeks. You cane mail all data and entries to support@hash.com. We have some siggraph Hash, Inc. jackets that we can give out to the winners if they would like them. Rules: 1). All entries must be modeled and rendered in A:M. Third party paint programs like Photoshop can be used for painting texture decals 2). The images will be 480X640 in the splash screen, But i would like a image at least 1440x1920 so we have a high rez version for promo items and poster. 3). I will also need a render if just the c…

Having experienced some strange behavior when handling UV-maps in A:M, I am wondering if I am doing something wrong, or this is a bug. It goes like this: 1. I make a (in this case very simple) model in A:M. 2. Exporting the model (without UV's) as an .OBJ 3. Importing the model into 3DCoat. 4. ...and gets this automatic UV unwrapping. 5. Still in 3DCoat I then paint something on the model. 6. And export the model as an .OBJ with enclosed Targa color map. 7. Back into A:M I import... 8. ...and gets this distorted result - even if I render the model. The projection bulges and weave, and t…

I am currently working on a pin-up for a Heavy Metal style magzine in the UK called "Event Horizon" from Mamtor Press. I have totally forgotten how to do the most simple of things within A:M, so this should be fun trying to get back in. The project that I am working on requires alot of dynamic interaction between layers of cloth and hair so I have been testing these features recently. I decided to start a thread to show what I find and hopefully get some answers on the way. I don't know if there are any differences between Sim Cloth in A:M 13 and A:M 14 but I am testing both. This is a 2 second movie, from A:M 14 Beta 4, which shows that Sim Cloth on Sim Cloth is possible: The missing patches on frame 0 is an A:M 14 bug, I think. It always has a render problem on the first frame of the QT movies that I have rendered from Beta4. I have noticed that when I render to Sorenson 3 format fr…
