Hi all, A few points. First I am treating this exercise as an AM showcase so I am not interested in prizes. This also means I would like as much input into my image as possible to make it as good as it can possibly be (even if others wish to enlist to provide resources). I wish to 'showcase' as many features in AM as possible and produce a kick ass image - but - I am not the greatest/most creative artist out there (I'm a bit of ahack really). Any amount of critique/help will be most welcome. My image thus far comprises a background generated in another APP (a 3D Landscape APP) and I then moved the camera to look down on the landscape to generate the ter…

About twelve years ago, when CD's were a hot new technology, I had a client who needed a logo/avatar for a "CD Studio". "The Bean" suddenly appeared as a doodle in the margin: a blobby character with pipestem arms and legs, no features, surfing on a CD with a stack of three over his head. He was never submitted, but I have somehow retained a fondness for him. Over the years, I have built, and re-built The Bean in evey 3D app. that passed through my hands. Now it's A:M's turn.

I've decided to start practicing animating to dialogue pieces...in the zip you'll find a quicktime movie of the basic blocking... the sound only comes out of the left channel and that's crappy..I have to figure that one out.... Formula.zip

Hey everyone! I thought I would let you all see my first model Im attempting in AM v.11. Its a screwdriver, a realistic one I might add . At least that is what Im trying to accomplish. I've been modelling what you see in the two images below for about 20-30 minutes, I did that in just that amount of time. Although, its not completed yet I think its pretty good so far seeing as it is my first model that I am doing in AM. Please tell me what you think so far . Click on the 2 links for shaded view and shaded/wireframe view of the screwdriver: Thanks Everyone Paul

ok.... You can see in screen cap 2, the circles that make up the leg are fine til it gets to the point circled in red. In screencap 1 the worst areas are circled. Any thoughts on best way or if this is even necessary to correct are appreciated. Thanks Roger

Hello all, who read this, who bothered to read this, and this, ... I was working on biology and was reading about 'self-sackers'(don't know how to spells) who will stay home with there mom to help raise the off-spring. So right now I'm working on the head, I'll try to put some shots below, but for my hair, only on the top does it show, the rest of the hair is going down, I've provided the .prj file for those to look at and help not to use(yes, that's disclamer). I'm hoping to make this a movie some time, currently saving up for the a:m upgrade and a dual processer(stil dnt knw hw 2 spl). Thanks, to those who post, and post, and post, ... Mohammad sc…

A clouple of weeks ago I posted the head for this model. I was having serious probs. trying to figure out the spline arrangement. Thanks to the input (specially Jim's), I'm almost done with the modelling part. Or at least, I think I am. Any how, I just want to let you guys in on the progress. And as always your comments are welcomed.

This is a character for yep you guessed it...a personal project that will take me the rest of my lifetime to finish. This is the second attempt at a human head I have made (the first was lost due to computer crash and having no burner). Hasn't been textured or anything (except a bump effect to sit in for the fleshy vibe). Due to the quality of the jpg I have just realized there is slight banding on the profile please disregard as this is not on the TGA. Thanks. Critique away. J p.s. the main reason for this post is because I usually make a vow on art forums NOT to critique someone elses work until I post something for others to critique of mine. …

Here are a couple of tests for the rigging on my pocket Bataille cutout guy-thing. I had been struggling to get a little bend in the paper cutout of his body and failed--the tape "holding" the wire to the paper kept slipping. In one experiment I had a bit of success by having one bone connected to the cps I wanted moved, but having another bone--an FK parent of the cp bone--do the motion. But, upon trying that I realized that the paper needs to be pretty rigid anyway, and that its motion would be better conveyed through y-axis rotation than actual folding/bending. These are rough, just tests. Oh, and for the record, in the first one that is sort of a salute into …

I started to put this in the help wanted forum, but I wasn't sure it qualified. After 40 years in the music business, I’m making a stab at becoming an overnight success. It’s too late for me to do it by being young and pretty, so I’ll have to rely on bullsh*t and trickery. One arm in my multi-pronged attack on the American Psyche, will be revamping my website. www.myronleroy.com. I would like to have some unique and interesting background images, with different themes. Which brings me to the reason for this post. I was wondering where to find that imagery, when it dawned on me that I have already been obliquely associated with some folks with incredibl…

Thought I'd finally take a crack at modeling a realistic head to go with the ears I made earlier. This is a self portrait (egomaniacal person that I am). I made ears during a post debating what is the most difficult body part to model. (The "ears have it" in this case.) The ear models (I made an elf/orc version, too) are still available if anybody needs ears for their own model. Ears Here's the face to go with the ears (idealized of course--"Isn't he so handsom! Gaffaw, gaffaw..."). Any suggestions for improvement--for the model that is, not plastic surgery for myself--are quite welcome. Thanks!

My "real" job has kept me from getting much done in A:M for some time now, but recently the situation has improved and I'm working more normal hours. I might even get back involved in TWO. This is something I did last year: Self Portrait Thread I still have some tweaks left and of course eyes instead of mere spheres...and teeth and gums and a tongue and throat and texturing and hair and rigging...and maybe even a body! Here is it's current state:

Been working on this for a couple of weeks, trying to make a realistic face model splined on the principles in Jason Osipa's book. Didn't really set out to make a self-portrait, but I knew my face would always be available for comparisons while I worked on it. Right now I'm stuck trying to make a decent ear before I CFA the other half. Once it's done, I'll try painting a skin (color, bump, specularity, etc.) from scratch.

Well, I foolishly decided to dress up my main character in a cloak, which means a whole lot of cloth animation. No way was I gonna do all that by hand. True, the new v.12 SimCloth is right around the corner, but realistic cloth movement is actually kinda distracting when it comes to cel-style animation. You never see Batman's knees poke around under his cape when he walks, y'know? I needed something real-looking, but simplified. I figured I could get a good side-to-side swing using Dynamic Constraints, and I elected to "cheat" the cloak outward a bit, just far enough so the legs wouldn't pass through it. Rigging the cloak took forever--56 bones arranged in a cyl…

I am working on a semi- (to high) realistic (we will see how well she will turn out ) model of a girl. She was modeled from scratch and isn't textured yet (apart from the eyes). She needs some more poses for talking- and emotional stuff, but till now I am quite pleased with her. Before I will go on texturing her, I thought I may adress the porceilan-problem I run into. I tried using the porceilan-material, but I got a problem with hooks there. Anyone knows what I am doing wrong there? The final-rendering is without(!) porceilan which looks okay too, but I would like to use the material to make it even more smooth. Any thoughts? Thanks for your comme…

Hi everyone, this is a model of my friend Jane that I’ve been working on for about a month. (on and off, most of the time smoothing) Any comments? I’m having trouble with the cheeks and some 5-point patches around the eyes. Any feedback that anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Oh, and happy holidays to all! :-)

All the recent post's in the R&R section have inspired me to start a new model. I plan to get this one rigged and animated eventually. I have started the model but won't have anything to post until this weekend. Here are the concept images. I am not a religious person but was taken back to a time that could be seen as a religious one. (the experience anyway). I sketched it and sculpted it for my mother when she was experiencing her last four months of life.

Who is the 3D computer animation equivalent Dickens, Edgar Rice Burroughs, or Steven King of our age? It seems those with serial staying power may be able to win that title for a day. Serialization has been a particularly capapable benefactor to creators of literature, film, comics, cartoons, and animation and other media over the past two centuries. No time to be idle: the serial novel and popular imagination, by Shawn Crawford (1998), is an article I propose may give a little insight into how modern day storytellers can control the passage of time and distribute animation through the internet to reach their intended audience. Its a historical look back t…

This is the model of the laptop I've tweaked and I'm working on animating a tutorial about pixels. This is a plain rectangular shape colored flat gray, with one light on it. As you can see, I've got a pretty severe banding problem. Compounding this is 1) I wasn't having this problem yesterday, and 2) It seems to be getting worse in the course of the day. Earlier today, my renders would start with the banding, then it would smooth out by the end of 16 passes. Now, even with 25 passes it's still somewhat visible. Any suggestions are welcome. Gerry

I've been kicking around the idea of doing a series set in an RPG video game world for a while now. It seems like a great idea for a web series, with low resolution video, low patch-count models, and low res textures. Lower production value all around! I already have a lot of backround notes, and switching to shorter episodes for web-release should make writing a lot easier. I've modeled the low patch figures already, and I've got the female model assembled, mapped, and textured. I just need to rig her. The male model will be next to finish. I'm using basically the same mesh, there's only one extra spline in the female model to make the bust look smoother. He…

Hi all: This is a quick test of the Nautilus on the surface with a klieg as the sun and a fill light in front of the sub for a little ambiance. The problem lies with the sub's shadows reflected on the surface of the water - they are casting in the wrong direction. The light source is in the back to the left, ergo the shadows should be pointing to the front right, yet they seem to be pointing straight at the viewer. No diff with the fill off. Any ideas?
