A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I remember having trouble with this in the past, but I was hoping that it had been solved simply. When I render an image file from Hash as a PNG, JPG, or other, the Alpha channel doesn't export automatically. As a result, when I import the image back into A:M to be used in a "Layer", it has black instead of transparency. If you have an Alpha channel set in the render, it should show up in the image as transparent. But in an A:M render this is not the case. Am I missing something. 1. Render an object as a PNG with "Alpha" buffer set on. 2. Import that image back into A:M and create a layer with it in a Choreography. 3. Does the transparent area sho…

I am trying to use sprites to render a fire effect. I have some fire animations for the sprites. Is there a way to make them partly transparent with an alpha channel? I have an alpha channel for them but i cant figure how to load that into the sprite system. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm trying to get my fire with a flickering light - I've looked through the forum and found that if I render the fire to a tga alpha channel I could apply it as a gel to a klieg light ( ) However, I've tried various ways - the simplest is rendering a ball with the flame material as described in TaoAM Chapter 16. I get the alpha channel for the ball, but the flames do not show in the alpha channel. Am I doing something wrong, or are particles not supposed to show up in the alpha channel? I was reading this thread on Compositing Particles, and, while it is all a bit too hard for me, it does seem to imply that you can get an alpha channel from particles. …

I'm currently working on a 2d game that supports alpha channel PNG/TARGA files and I was wondering if there was a way I could render to TARGA and have only the model itself reder and everything else be a "blank" background. This is a vital process for my game and I'm hoping it can be done in A:M if it helps, I'm using v11.1H Thanx guys.

I do have a chor setup containing a dome and a character. I use the dome with an hdr image for reflection (reflection map on a material on the character itself is out of the question). So my problem is this: I need to render an animation with only the character (alpha) eg make the dome cast shadows but not make it visible in the render... Any tips?

I know there's been a lot of alpha channel talk lately, but I don't think this has been touched on- I'm using a .TGA sequence to rotoscope a 3D element into my real footage. One problem is the shadows. While I've read tutorials that suggested making objects that match those in the scene, and then project the same decal from your main camera onto those, I think having a live actor in the shot makes this more complicated. What would be ideal to me as compositor, would be a way to export the ball and some darkness under itself softened by another alpha layer. In my mind the way to do that would be to make the surfaces that receive shadows, and then t…

Hi guys! I just got hash Animation master at the San Diego Comic Con. I've installed it and started working with it. I noticed that I must have the CD in the CD drive in order for the program to work. Is this always the case? Can the program not run without it in there? Also I'm wondering if the copy I got at the show is a 1 year subscription or the full program. I had thought I was buying the full program, but after reading the website I'm now unsure. Thank you!

(I tried to post this in archive forum to not bother up-to-date users, but forum is readonly.) To any other AM 11 / Windows Vista users: I'm having display problems where the screen doesn't seem to refresh, or partially draws with my Windows Vista Compaq laptop. Particularly, when only one A:M window is open (say, chor or modeling) the background grid does not fully draw. Having two windows open magically makes the grid draw fully in both windows. In a Model window, I'll switch to "shaded" mode and a patch won't render. If I tweak a control point, suddenly it might render. Sometimes while drawing a spline, parts don't draw while making it. …

I have version 11 and 12, but have never really used them. My son is now at the age where he would like to try animation. When I try to run Animation Master it says: cd/dvd emulation software has been detected. Please disable all cd/dvd emulation software and restart the game. I have tried to disable all the emulation programs through task manager and right clicking all programs at the bottom right of windows. I still keep getting the error. Is there a way to satisfy these requirements without removing the emulation software completely from the PC? I have no desire to copy program, just learn animation. I contacted support, b…

I have AM 9.5, I like animating for fun once in a while but have not been able to devote the time to seriously try to learn AM. I do have some questions about some of the AM books. Regarding the new AM v11 Technical Manual. Does it only apply if you have the latest version of AM, or does the tutorial work with any version of AM. Secondly, on the same subject, the link to purchase the book does not go anywhere. I know a few months back that it did, but now it just goes to Cafepress' website without any information. Thanks Griffin

My question comes from pages 141 & 142 from the guide. I don't really understand what rotating a single CP (the flour sack's top most corners, I'm assuming) is suppose to acheive. Is there a posted example of this? or possibly someone can explain the desired results in a little more detail. I realize muscle motion is an advanced topic, but I want to make sure I'm understanding it correctly before I move on. TIA. John

Okay, so I'm a student at Clark College, and since I can't model worth a crap I decided for my final to do an A:M music video. My min, requirement was 30 seconds, butttt, i went a little overboard and did the entire video. Yes, there are some obvious time filler spots, and some of the audio is off sync, (its all sync in the A:M program but I put all the rendered clips into Sony Vegas Pro and things got a little shaky). I just wanted an opinion, tell me what you think! Sadly, it is a youtube link... Thanks! Payton

Now, I can call myself a NEWBIE... I have some questions about AM plug-ins. 1. What are those plug-ins that are included in V15? 2. Where can I find more plug-ins if I have to pay for it? 3. Does the V15 support importing the OBJ format (I have made some bodels in from other app)? 4. Where can I find free plug-ins? One more question, Can my 1 yr subscription fee be used toward the cost of the CD? Thank you for your responses.

Hi everyone, I'm still relatively new to AM so please forgive me if these sound like a stupid questions. I've seen some incredible animated shorts posted at AM Films. I'm working on one myself ("The Door is Stuck" exercise). My question is, How do you create a final render with different camera angles? I was told it can't be done in AM but people are doing it some how. I'm hoping you can do this completely in AM and not have to buy another software package. Specifically, Is there a way to see camera changes in the previewed animation before rendering? If no, then why allow you to turn camera's on and off? Basically I want to make my "Door …

Have tried all the free video players I could find online and still can't find one that plays in "real time", but then used AMs ablility to read in sequences of numbered images and when you open the loaded image/sequence and hit the play button it plays great the first time but then will only play in hyper speed but it's still better than the results of all those players I tried before. I've had terrible luck trying to get all those free video players to read in image sequences as a single clip (even with a toggle button "read in as single clip" is activated) I know that the speed of your computer is most important but then why do all the Youtube videos play smo…

It's probably been there for decades but I swear I can remember a time when it wasn't there and must admit I don't know how to use it. When viewing the material in it's viewer I crank the setting from zero to 100 - no difference. I know I'm risking terrible humilitation by admitting this but just couldn't live with myself anymore til I came clean. As always any help greatly appreciated.

Hi all, I'm new to 3d animation and wondering about rendering times. I've got a Dell Latitude 3Ghz Laptop with 2GB of RAM. It seems too slow for me (only a 64MB ATI built-in card). I have access to an AMD 64bit system with 1 GB of RAM. Would that work any faster? Does AM take advantage of 64-bit? How about multiple Processors? Thanks in advance! -Tim

Hi all, I'm hoping some of you guru's might help my students out. We are using 3D Game Studio to develop a 3D game and AM for character development. When using AmxTex to export, AM crashes with some models; and some models it works fine with. Even when we remove the rigging and strip down a model we still encounter crashes. I've attached a simple model (designed after Jeff Lew's Killer Bean) that won't export. Any ideas on what we should try? Mike Bean.mdl
