Much of my focus these days is with hand drawn animation but it all tends to blend and further complement the study of animation. For instance, some folks spend a great deal of time sculpting physical models (maquettes) as an aide to visualizing their characters and objects in order to make drawing them (from any angle) easier. Even animators who draw their characters should have a 3D computer animation program. Of course I recommend Animation:Master because... with splines... modeling is an extension of drawing. This was primarily an exercise in trying to model this character quickly. It would have been wise for me to sketch out a few drawings to rotos…

Hello All- I have been trying to make a basketball swish through a hoop with netting and do it in a dramatic way. Alas,..so far ..no success. I have embedded a project for anyone who wants to take a look. Basically I took a basketball backboard (from an old hash model library) and eliminated everything but the metal hoop and netting. Then I took a Basketball (also from an old model library) to use as the "deflector". Using Mark Weller's video tutorial on using the Sim cloth simulator I took his suggestion and used the very top row of cps in the netting as the "attached" part of the cloth so that the netting was stuck to the hoop. Before I even added …

I've always dreaded going back and editing the geometry of "finished" models because it typically involves breaking decals. Is it possible to work around this by storing decal stamp data on a CP by CP basis, rather than a patch by patch basis? Now, bear with me for a second here. My programming knowledge is pretty limited, so I have no idea how feasible something like this is; if it would work, if it would create ridiculously bloated files, what have you. But I DO know that this is a feature I've wanted for a long, long time and it just kind of occurred to me how one might go about doing it. Here's what I'm thinking. Here's a simple little model made up of fo…

Been working on a commission for a friend and was running into a problem with the fire ring. I have created a circle spline path and attached a fire emitter on that path to create my "ring of fire". For some reason the path it takes looks like so: And the render: test2.mov I can't figure out why the streaks stay on a hexagonal path dispite it being attached to a circle. Any ideas?

With everybody making head models, I felt the urge to play with making one today, going for more realistic than I normally do. I borrowed the ear from my v3 Krok model. Not liking the mouth right now, but still, fun to mess with... I should point out that I model the whole head rather than doing that face mask thing.

AM to the rescue the mission complete 5 narrative animations for Dango Tango a web series for they're Halloween season the first 4 where done in another 2d program in 2009 and they needed to have certain scenes redone without changing styles and going back to 2d would have delayed the whole thing so i turned to good ole AM for the ans. the short mov shows the success of that I rebuilt the first scene and made a seamless match to the second in a matter of hours ( the cut the to bird is the 2nd scene ) other scenes where then rebuilt in a similar manner ok so it's not pixar but thats the look number 5 was all AM ( decals made in another app th…

The image used for the calendar is (as each year) created with A:M, so I thought "why not showing it on the forum". http://advent.3we.de Best wishes and have a nice pre-christmas time . *Fuchur*

Hello- I was attempting the tutorial on Newton Physics... the one where you have 3 cylinders that are supposed to tumble on themselves. http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?act=A...st&id=19636 Each cylinder is set to be a dynamic object and the ground is static. Pretty basic stuff, but I get this error message when I right click on one of the cylinders in Choreography: I am using V17a and after receiving the error message I copied the "explode.hxt" from the V16 Hxt folder into the v17 Hxy folder ,thinking that might help...(because there was no "explode.hxt" in the v17 folder). Didn't help... Has anyone had similar issues...or any sugges…

It's been a looong time since I created anything remotely good in AM, even longer since I posted anything. So I decided to get back into it and create a new character. I've never been good at creating realistic people, so I am creating a cartoony style wizard. Here's the first WIP shot of the head:

Started trying to animate the male as the female walks away in "Why"? It was going OK until I switched to the left view and tried to select the male shoulders to make them droop. Every time I tried it selected the other model behind so, deactivated that and went back to the male, only to find that the skeleton won't show up in the window, even if I toggle the skeleton button in the chor. Select him in the PWS and the figure shows but not the bones. If the chor button is toggled, it selects the female in the PWS, even though it is deactivated ? Thinking to post the problem file here, I deleted all the non relevant parts and embeded everything. Only to find…

I've been inactive of late in the A:M world... new job has me going in other directions. But Friday was a 'hurry-up and wait' day- so I perused my A:M files and saw a model that I last worked on TEN YEARS ago(2003 with a SetupMachine V1 rig!)... so I revisited it... added some SSS, some matcaps, some FastAOgpu, a TrueBones motion capture action(offset on the different dancers) and let Youtube provide the music track... The poneytails are controlled by a pose that has muscle-motion sway in a 100 to -100%... then a bone parented to the head bone with a dynamic constraint... then a smartskin relationship on that bone that controls the pose by the rotation of the bone. …

Hello all- Just a quick question. I was checking out the UCLA Lab of Neural Imaging and came across a cool picture of a brain. I was trying to duplicate it in AM. I even thought that there was a Dark Tree shader that approximated x rays but couldn't find it. Anyway, in AM I took 2 spheres, crumpled the bigger one slightly and made it transparent. Added a color map and high specularity and came up with something that doesn't look even remotely what I intended. Any ideas how to achieve the effect on the left? Many thanks! Tom

Here's a proof of concept test of a cityscape cobbled together quickly with copies of a single nondescript cube. The basic idea being to later replace that cube with a fully poseable master building capable of showing a variety of different details and facades. Similar variables might control details outside the building such as lampposts/lights etc. There are a few assumptions here: - Detail would (optimally) only be created where the camera needs to go (This might be directed through hot/active and cold/inactive zones) - Streets and sidewalks would be created after the primary city is generated and approved for detailing (conversely the building could be …

I started a new project of modeling my favorite bicycle. I could not stop, and I am half way there. I just wanted a basic bike for myself, and then make a Black Op version of my recumbent bike for the zombie /end of the world survival road warrior bike. I manage to get the basic bike patch count to 12,000 and I try to not get too detailed on it. I have not rig it yet! Took me a day and a half to get this far. One of the thing I learn from this is to model the pieces in a separate model window, and then once you got it, copy and paste to the main model window. I test the bike with another character and it fits really well with real world scale character. She is 5'1" fee…

Here's something I've been wondering about for 20 years... Could i use A:M to scan a complex model to make a displacement map to put on a simple model and give it the shape of the complex model? In this test case I used a surface constraint to measure the difference in radius between the left shape and the right one. With some text editing and spreadsheet jiggling I made a bitmap out of that data and applied that to the simple shape on the right. The "scan" was very lo res, just 30 pixels around the perimeter, and it has a glitch in it, but the basic concept worked. If I could streamline and automate the workflow a bit, the scans could be very high res and work in al…

I was going to submit a second entry for the "toon" contest, but Steve informed me I could only do one. So, this is just a quick pic I did the other day. It's nothing spectacular, but fun nonetheless. I created the Alien a couple years back, just never did anything with him, but now that I've got TSM, he's boned and rigged. Comments and critiques are welcome, but the picture is pretty much finished. Time to move on to other things. (v10.5 / WIN98se / AMD 2400+ / 512 MB / ATI Radeon9200)

Hi there, Well, finally got round to running a fly-round of my female character. I think I better getting on slapping some bones in her, and start doing some animation with her... I think she still needs smoothing out some more, but I'm just spinning my wheels at the moment, hence the need for some animation. Maybe some clothes on her as well - yes, she's nude, so you have been warned. I based the body on Joe Williamsen's awesome Bisley Warrior Princess, and the head on every single wireframe that I've seen by Jim Talbot - thanks for the constant inspiration, both of ya! The hair and ears were obtained from Vuk Pavlovic (sp?), so thanks go to him. The…

I can't get projection maps to apply as anything but spherical. I don't know what's up, probably me being an idiot somehow. I was wanting either a difuse map, or a color map (or both) but I can't get them to actually show up on my model unless I have the interpolation set to spherical. Otherwise, it doesn't show up at all. Any ideas as to what might be going wrong?

Sorry, since the forum this was posted in doesn't allow for pictutre uploads, I started a thread here so I could show a way to respline his model. I'm sure some the modeling gurus can come up with a much better solution, but here's my contribution anyway. I just took your pictures and re-drew some of the lines. For me, there isn't any trick to avoiding these types of situations other than experience. You just start to sense alot earlier that you are going to paint yourself into a corner, and you do your spline rearranging before things get too out of hand. So I guess you are doing exactly what you need to do in order to avoid this sort of thing in the future Model…

Hey guys! HAPPY EASTER. I haven't posted, commented or been on the forum how i woud like. But this little doodle idea i had on the bus i decided out of trying to model using a flat side drawing all the splineage in hash like i would on paper. No rotos just drawing the side view and using the magnetic mode and tweaking i got this head model that was done realitively fast the splineage probaly took 15min to at most half hour. The rest took probaly another hour or 2 i forget i was on the net and watching tv so this didn't have my full attention.... Open for comments ..........talk to you guys later i going to get some Easter Dinner now.

Posted this topic in the Showcase last month but never really got any replies... Does anyone have any tips on the kind of Cloth simulation I need to do for large cape animation. Go to my Batman page I have Tests on Cape Animation there & so far that's the best I can get. Alienfilms.net/Batman/ The Cape has a low patch count. Should the patch count be higher, or would that help at all? It ether looks to heavy, to light or to stiff... I'm using A:M 8.5 but plan on getting 10.5 pretty soon. If anyone has any tips I'm all ears. Thanks! Edit: Added Link

I've been working on this metal flake material, in v8.5, in my spare time. I really wanted to capture the sparkling quality as the perspective changed. I rememberd a tuturial by Charles Babbage: "Diffraction Grating 101", where he used a multi-gradient tree for specular accents. I figured I could do the same thing for a whole material by adjusting the "edge surface" property, by rotating you see the same material slightly offset with some colors attributes switched, giving it a twinkling appearance. Still needs a little work. Metal Flake Test .MOV If someone would like to repost, please do so. (low, low bandwidth) And incase your wondering "Why did he…
