After over a four year departure I have finally got around to revisiting my 'Bella Bear' project which some of you here might remember :-) I have taken one of my favourite shots from the short Bella Bear film I made back then and started to rework it following my spell at Animation Mentor and having worked on a few small film projects. Here is the original: Original And here is the newer version. Revisited It went a bit wonky at the end cos I added a refraction index to the glass on the spaceship of 1.4, but it is entertaining even if it isn't quite right. Better? I will be tarting things up to try and make it more showreel worthy over t…

** UPDATE: 4/15/04: scroll down ** Hey there, hashin' community. I'm in a pickle with a new character model. I'm making these fat, bean/potato-shaped robots. Their bodies have a very smooth, regular surface, which is the source of my worry. Have a look. (Hands and eyes coming soon.) Belly Bot, body Belly Bot, mouth My problem is with the mouth. Victor Navone's posts on Giant are really awesome. I wanted to try out his system, but I think it demands more skill than I have at the present time... So I'll stick with poses. Anyway, you can perhaps see my problem. This character's mouth adheres to a surface that is best described as conic -- it curv…

Hey there, good forum. While I still have a week or two of unemployment (and only that -- knock on wood) I've been burning my free-time on 3D, the way free time should be spent. Here's my newest character, the Belly Bot, with a completely redone face. I had to eliminate the pac-man mouth, sadly. I was very fond of it, but it wasn't capable of the expressions I wanted out of this guy. I mean, he's a face on legs -- his facial expressions matter. I was going for something noir-ish here, and I think it works well. Please give feedback. Belly, New Face New Face WF --Ross

I am currently working on Bender from Futurama. I am still very new to AM and don't know much about complicated modeling. Which is why I started with Bender, he's mainly lathes and extrudes. What I need help on is his feet (I have figured out all of my other questions). The issue Im having with his feet is that when I try to put a surface over the bottoms it warps the rest of the foot-cup (pic 2 below). I have tried extruding the bottom circle and then making it smaller, but that makes "smooth" lines which bows out the bottom of the foot. Any help would be much appreciated

Here is a short clip of Bender from Futurama saying his trademark phrase - there is one potentially objectional word, so be warned. Bender Speaks! My first version of Bender used a decal for the teeth, but I wanted to do lipsynch. I thought of just using spline rings set to "Render as lines," then I decided to use mesh in case I want to do non-toon rendered clips as well (I do). Enjoy, and critiques are welcome!

I'm starting some modelling work for a game I'm working on. This is Beth Darwin, a girl in her early teens. The model is going to be used in real time, so I have to keep an eye on patch count - I plan to export it as a PLY at detail level '4' (8 polys/patch) and use my own converter to get it to SMD format (a nice, easy to understand format that Half-Life uses.) Here's the character design - these pictures were drawn at two different times, and yes, there are some differences: -Sean Givan

Better Anti-Aliasing WITHOUT the wait !!

Hi guys, This is just an application of some fundamental image-processing theory to A:M The attached images where rendered in about the same time, even though one obviously has better anti-aliasing then the other. Contrary to popular belief, anti-aliasing is an objective measurement; NOT subjective. By performing a Histogram of your renders, the number of steps that appears in a histogram determines OBJECTIVELY how well you are anti-aliasing. This histogram analysis is only valid in pure color images (like the given example) and edge boundaries must be sharp (meaning no blurred edges). In A:M when you set your Blur to 0 . . . you ar…

I'm working on a music video for my band. The instrumental tune is called Escape from the Mines of Titan, and that pretty much spells out the plot. I just started work, and quickly put together a scene. I just created a surface, added some hills and valleys, and put on some color and roughness that gives it a sandy look. (Saturn behind it is an actual NASA photo.) The real Titan has a landscape more like that of the moon, but I would be OK with keeping it sandy. I'd love to hear any tips or suggestions you guys have about improving the look of Titan (maybe a material or image texture?) It's not bad for the small amount of time I've spent on it so far, but it can be…

I thought about what I could do as a first project, and thought it would be good to make a movie of Jabberwocky - not too long, and I've always been a fan. Then as I went through TaoA:M I thought, maybe just a verse. As I finished TaoA:M, I thought, just a couple of words. So - "BEWARE THE JABBERWOCK!" He's supposed to be from Tenniel's Jabberwock illustration, and, yes, those are socks: He's only got a basic modified 2001 rig, but as he doesn't appear much in the poem, he doesn't need any more. My next move is to try and bake a Darktree onto his skin and change it in 3d Painter.

Ok, so I've been trying to figure out the best way to animate a chain and sprocket like on a bicycle, but I see no easy way to do this. The easiest way I can think of is to use a path in a chor, and add a bone to each link in the chain that would follow the path. Then, I guess I would have to constrain the path to the sprockets. Please let me know if you have any better way to do this?? Oh, another question...why isn' it possible to add a path in an Action? Wouldn' this be useful? Thanks, Eugene

This helmet model, Helmet Fly-by (Windows Media, 851 KB) Helmet Fly-by (QuickTime, 1.12 MB) goes with the inline speed skate: http://www.civicreflections.com/SkateFlyBy_QT.mov (1.2 MB.) I'm having trouble getting a compression setting that doesn't mess up fast motion in QuickTime-I've given up for now. Guess I can't put off much longer the part between the helmet and the skates. Robert has started a thread about Bioshock's Big Daddy character in this thread: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showt...t=0#entry245969 I really liked the character and asked Robert for approval to model Big Daddy also. With his ok on the subject, I splined away. This is my humble beginning, um, I mean Big Daddy's humble beginning. Critiques and comments always welcome.

So, I'm jumping in and starting modeling on a short for submission in a film festival Film Festival Topic Discussion. The movie will be a Christmas Story of sorts. The main character is Old Man Willies. I started on his head..made one goof after another, then decided to use Sire Nigel as a starting point. After beheading Nigel, I then started to push and pull control points to get the look I was looking for. Here he is: crits please.

Hello all I'm using this project as an excuse both to get a lot of A:M practice in and get some extra credit in my English class. I'm not on any deadline, I just thought it would be fun to make this poster. It depicts Bilbo's Journey from start to finish, with focus on the generic elements of a Hero's Journey (call to adventure, helpers, etc.). I've been working on and off on it since school started. Here it is about halfway done. I still have to put in the Eagles and/or a bear, the goblins, some background stuff, maybe Gollum, pose the Dragon, and anything else you all think of. I have a few questions about what I have so far. You can download the entire project (10…

Okay, I need to get a few things out of the way before I begin... LEGO in 2001 released a series of Toys called Bionicle. Basically it was about 6 bio-mechanical heroes (Called Toa) with elemental powers defending an ancient island (where other bio-mechanical robots lived) against an evil force. Well, since then the fanbase grew and grew and the story expanded... and I was one of the kids who was with it since it began. I'm now 15, and into 3d animation, so for the past year I've been doing things in Animation:Master... and one day I thought... "HEY! I should do animations based on Bionicle!" So here I am. Think.. Star Wars Fan Films.. and you'll get where I'm …

This is my first attempt on something that I've done. I have gotten really addicted to Bioshock and love the Big Daddy's. Included i have a picture of a big daddy Front and side view of the original, and the front and side view of the one I'm doing. Please tear me away on your opinions and bashings. I haven't finished it yet, but what I have been doing *what you can see* has taken me around 7 hours more or less. Now as you can see, the base of the body isn't what it will actually be, it is just there to give me a general idea of where things will go. If you have any opinions that you would like private, or would like to help me, by making a 'little sister, or a splicer'…

About 8 months ago I made... well tried to make Big Daddy from bioshock. I have gotten somewhat better and always look at the Bioshock project as one of my 'first' works. I want to see how much better I have actualy gotten, so I'm redoing the project. The first picture you see is my old project when I desided it was 'finished'. The second is the refrance picture i used/am using. I will post updates of what I've been working on when it finishes updating.

Is there a way to change the percentage value of a Normal Map in Bitmap Plus?

Inspired by Mark's impressive re-creation of the "Rear Window" set, I've started experimenting with using BitmapPlus for building bricks and shingles. In an attempt to add more variation to the bricks I added three materials with three different decals and set their visibilities so each one only shows up one-third of the time. Worked like a charm. Then I ran the same play with three bump decals. This time only the first decal is visible, no matter what the other two material's parameters are. There's an easy work around (live with one texture) but I'm curious if there's something I'm missing.

I filmed a theater performance called Die Schwarze Spinne (The Black Spider), and I decided to make a little opening sequence for it. This is the 3D part of that sequence -- I'll add in titles later. This really only took me about four hours in A:M... Considering it went from "idea" to "finished animation" in that time, I'm happy. Anyhow, feedback would be cool. Spider! Warning: not for arachnophobes.

OK, simple Chor question. Could use some help please. Here's the setup... 1. Drag-Drop model into Chor. 2. Drag-Drop Action onto model. 3. Play the Chor and model performs action nicely. 4. Drag-Drop another Action (same action, whatever, a different action would be fun too.) 5. Play the Chor . Now the action gets performed 2 times. However, the second action pops back to the starting point of where the first action started and what I want to happen is, have the second action start from where the first action ended. Question: What do I have to do in the chor, to have the second action start from where the first action ended. I hope this is quit…

As it stands, I added 10 key frames to a clip, one every second, and alternated 0 and 100% for the ambiance settings of a model bulb. Setting the interpolation to "hold" gave the quick blink. Clumsy, but it works. Never having used expressions before, could someone give me an idea of how to do this over a 10 second clip? This would be more elegant than keyframing, especially if I wanted to do this for a longer clip. Thanks
