Penguins have always been a favorite animal of mine. Perhaps it because they look like they are dressed in formal wear, or maybe it is just that they are physically unable to steal my french fries (unlike one of my least favorite animals: seagulls). Either way, the other day I drew some penguins for a comic (here if you're interested) which got me thinking about penguins once again. So I've decided to try making a basic model of a penguin... mainly because I'm not good enough to make a non-basic model Attached is the 1st step... plan of attack is adding some feet, shaping the head a bit, shaping the rest of the body slightly, fixing the eyes, possibly adding som…

I am planning to try out a workflow from A:M (modelling) to Blender (UVing), then Export to zBrush and A:M again. Do sculpting and export displacement maps fom there, then go back to A:M, apply maps and a rig and do some animation. Then, export MDD and render wherever it looks best. Maybe I do some cartoons about a pirate lost on a small Island ... Best regards, Heiner

I have a main object that has an action that adds several other ojects to it in the chor. Now I want to control the ambient intensity in a pulsating fashion of one of the action objects (call it OX) being added. So I made a percentage pose with OX and adjusted the ambience from 0 to 100 with a pose slider. This is where I'm stuck - when I open the main object in the chor and click the OX action object, there is no pose slider to manipulate, even though I have the drivers icon unchecked. If I add the OX object to the chor by itself, the pose slider is there and works fine. When the OX object is added to the main object via the action, I can't find a way to access the …

ddustin and I are collaborating on a project, not so much working together, but helping each other out with tips and techiques, and thought we'd post a message here to get some feedback (suggestions , tips, and/or techniques) as how to proceed. The animation in question would be a short, not really a movie per sae, more of a commercial. The camera opens up onto a small building (very small, appears to be big enough only for a single person to stand inside). On one side of the building is a window with a conveyor belt running out from it, to the back of a delivery truck. packages would be sliding along the conveyor into the back of the truck. A character (…

Try as I might, I couldn't find a way to convey the scale of the model from one of my image contest entries. I tried several different camera angles, but none of them really said "this thing is freaking huge". Any suggestions? (For reference, here's a streaming QuickTime movie which shows how big it is relative to a human-sized object.)

Hey- I needed a baseball for a 'Pass the Ball' movie, and had an idea of how to make a quick-cool ball, it turned-out really cool and I thought I'd run it past you guys for hoots- 1st- the ball part is obviously just a lathed sphere, with a little bump added. 2nd I made a 'stitch' and copied and-pasted it 100 times so I had 100 stitches in a straight line. 3rd I made the 'path' which winds around the ball tightly, kinda tricky but not too hard. Then in bones mode I made 1 bone for the ball and 1 bone (each) for the 100 stitches. Auto assign points helped big in assigning the points to the 100 bones. Then came the constraints. In a new pose (ON/OFF) I gave …

Hey- I've been really busy lately... Recent animation for a local Tire chain that sponsors the 'Grand Rapids (MI) Griffins' minor league hockey team. The animation will run on the scoreboard at center ice during intermissions. I had always wanted to do one of these types of cartoons, and had fun doing it. I'm always amazed at sporting events how these mindless cartoons get BIG audience response... I hope mine does. Sorry about the big files sizes. Each is 1 minute long and there are 3 outcomes, and all share a common 1st half. This project took one week to complete, as the main character was already modeled and rigged and I just needed to make 2 other versions o…

I know this is not that good, animation-wise, but I'm learning a lot about A:M by working on this. I build a scene, render it, change something, render it again, add some different materials, render it again, etc... and I'm trying to learn more about about compositing and all that that entails. So it's a good exercise for me. Here's the link to the film: http://www.irish-studios.com/F4andTieFighterMovie.wmv I thought I'd post this just for the heck of it. The audio needs a lot of work, especially the dialogue as it's almost indecipherable unless you know what it says. But if you're interested, the dialogue goes: "Houston, this is Su…

Hello everyone! Just would like to use this as a short introduction and show off what I am currently working on. I moved 3 years ago and JUST NOW found my A:M that I thought was lost! I use V9.5. It's actually partway stable, that is once you develop the "sense" (of when it's gonna crash). I'm thinking about getting the newest version (like what, 15..?). Is it stable now? Still crashing like crazy...? Anyway, here are some things. I am fooling around with 3 cartoon heads from a website I am designing/maintaining. I get paid for it, but it's not my primary occupation. You'll see the three guys on the website here http://tresjosestexmex.com/ And here…

The prototype for this model (including the texturing) is hanging in my garage. shovel renders I toyed with the idea of simply using a photo of the blade to decal the texture but I've been forcing myself to use more complex materials because I'd like to think that dealing with the pain of tweaking procedurals, builds character. I did use colour samples from my reference photos in the materials.

Hey guys, I just remembered a couple of animations I did for a fishing web site. They needed a really quick talking Stryper and an animated example of how too hook up a spedial rig using anchovies.... hmmmm. http://www.powellstripers.com/default.cfm It took about 3 days to do both anims. The lip synch could have been more robust, but for online content I guess it's OK. Comments welcome. Cheers. MU PS. I also did a talking flash card for this site somewhere.... I believe you have to click on the "maps" button and look for "Chip Powell".

I have this thing for wanting realistic trees in my scenes. Ya'll can have your toony trees. We use a lot of panels with cookie cutter decals, and tree hair. A recent case we have is going to require us to fly down the road, past some trees so I thought I would make one using the treez plug-in. The problem was the high patch count and when you put hair leaves on it, My system would chug. So..... I make this tree which only has 700 patches, is 50 feet tall (leavea area a little large), and has leaves. I used the AM enhance Foliage material to create the leaves. It has a way to go but I like it so far. [attachmentid=20403] David

Hey guys was needing some C&C on this first segment of the new proj I'm working on. Just want to focus on the bum action for now. walk_in_the_park.mov Here what I'm seeing: The walk looks a bit mechanical; I was thinking about maybe adding in Squash and stretch but was afraid it would take away from the "stamper scuffle" I was going for. and the "plop" down to sitting overshoot seems kind off too. thanks ahead of time guys

My Webpage The site sort of explains it all better than I can here. Not expecting reams of critical feedback on it, but if you're gonna be real thoughtful about it, then go ahead. Been working on this monster for over two years (since May of 01)- so 2.5 years. It's your typical one man, one machine (well two and needing a third for the final rendering) sort of thing. And in 2 and half years I FINALLY get to post an image from the actual production. So there's proof that STICKING TO IT WILL GET YOU THERE- oops, not done yet, I spoke too soon! Oh one other thing: My focus for this film isn't (oddly enough) animating. It's more on design, story…

I have been trying to progress with the low-patch model that you may have seen in another thread. I have added a backpack, bedroll and some dynamic constraints, bringing the total patches up to 758 now, but something is messing up the eye poses and the dynamics are not working at all. Are other people getting similar problems with alpha 10? [attachmentid=15255]

I hesitate to post this in Showcase, these clips are mostly execises and wips, but since I probably will not revisit most of them I'll consider them finished. These were done with versions 8.5 all the way thru ver 12. All models are mine with the exception of one clip that contains the Mt Hash model in the background, and of course, Thom and the Knight's helmet and sword. And oh yeah, those are my kids in the rotoscope shot. http://home.alltel.net/collinsfamily04/AMDemoSmallSound.mov Cory

So here's the story... I do these play posters for my brother's community theater down in VA. The latest one is one of my favorites, Deathtrap. So I had originally planned to just do the whole concept for the poster using photoshop and royalty free images from my photo CDs. However during the layout and research stage I totally goofed up. I needed a pair of vintage handcuffs (if you know the play you know why) for the title on the poster. I found the perfect pair... ON THE FREAKING WEB! I used the darn thing through the whole creation all the way to the final and had completely forgotten it was a copyrighted image and I really couldn't legally use it. It was sor…

Hi--- I just updated an old :30 spot for a winter furniture sale and at the last minute decided to employ A:M's particle generator for a snow falling effect. I'm quite happy with the resulting animation, and with A:M's powerful toolkit! I originally used a filter in After Effects (Cycore's CC Snow...which simulates snow falling in depth .) I need to model some accurate head models, and photo rotoscopes were ok, but too hard, boring and hit and miss. So I thought of trying the old projected grid approach. Using an old overhead projector, I projected a grid onto the face of my model at 45 degrees, took a digital photo front on and side on. Using the resultant photos as rotoscopes, the grides lined up accurately and the cps are easily placed in xy space. Just like drawing with a grid.
