I was just noticing that it took 165 million dollars to make the recent "Polar Express" aka "Children of the Corn Go on a Train Trip" or "Zombie Express" Now just thinking ahead I feel that movie opening weekend will gross 12 million tops this opening weekend. I hope they prove me wrong. But really do you think it will do that well. I always wondered where people get there funding to make these things? Can you only imagine taking 165 million and splitting it on this website among 20 or 30 small groups. How many movies of similiar quality could be made. I mean seriously I wish we had a large animation fund where we could split it up. If only Ho…

Hi guys, I just wanted to show you my latest little project I was working on for the weekend. In 3dArtist (issue 20) there was a really amazing image of a very photoreal ladybug. I tried to archieve the same photorealism but could not archieve that till now. Anyway I think the result is still quite good and I wanted to show it to you guys. If someone of you can give me a few tips on how to make it look even more real, let me know... I would be happy to hear about it! I attached a preview-rendering and an wireframe of the scene. Hope you like it... Critiques are welcome! See you *Fuchur* PS: Just found the artist's website the image was fro…

Here's a five second logo I worked on for a friend with the original concept drawing that he provided. I made 640x480, 1280x720 and 1920x1080 versions...this is the 1280x720 version...1.0 gamma, H264 compressed Quicktime. There are plenty of things I wish I had done better, but I think overall it came out alright. animated_logo_1280x720_1.0_gamma_30FPS_H264.mov

Hi - Here is the link to the short film I've been trying to fit in around everything else. Things are finally chugging along so hopefully I'll be able to update this site with some regularity ( I'm sure these are famous last words as the year goes into meltdown) - but oh how I will try. Current wildly optimistic projections have me finishing this sometime in the first quarter of next year. Anyway, enough Blah blah heres the link - look forward to hearing any comments. This is my "neww" character, I've seen other peoples original characters and i thought i should make my own. it took me a while to come up with him, but basically i just started think things up. things like "arms? how about 4...no that wont work...just 2...nah forget the arms." then things like "if hes not gonna talk why give him a mouth?". i drew him and gave have him i hole in his head then i figured hey, hes a key chain. then i modeled him the next day. Once I'm done smart skinning him I'll be make a scene with him, I'm sure your all like it. I've also been having fun with his expressions, since he has no mouth i have to work with only the eyes. i have a wh…

My daughter kicked the plug out before I could finish it but here it is. I still havent added cp weights, smartskinning or even comstraints although I am reading up on them. The animated lacks weight and the timing is off (things I was trying to fix before the plug was pulled).

Finally got some time to get back into doing some animation, been a long long while but here's my first crack at a spider walk. All criticism is welcomed. Ignore the black color and poor lighting, I had to toss it through the old AM for the .mov since the rc1 doesn't support qt yet. Thanks spiderwalktest.mov

Hey Guys, I've been trying to upload this TV spot off and on this past year at Hash Films and have been unsuccessful. I just thought I would share it here... Here's the info on this spot and a link to the movie. This commercial has won many awards and is also being repackaged as part of the new Keep America Beautiful campaign for next year. The commercial was based on a sticker the Ad agency gave me. We had a week to make this spot. My choice of software to use to make the deadline...Animation Master. The whole premise is that of a midsummers day shot of the hills. I got the idea from the hills next to my house. Here are some sketches. The Windmill that is going to be in the semi foreground area. The overall layout of the shot. I am going need some help though on configuring AM hair to get that grass look. (Gold with white tips) More stuff soon. -Photoman

I moved this from http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17591&st=40 because it started to take on a life of it's own. Here is the latest render of this WIP. I read a post a while back that mentioned double patches between a light source and an object you want shielded from the light. I did this on the inside of the fireplace, but it still seems to let the light through. Can someone refresh my memory on how to block light to the inside of the chimmney? Comments and critique welcome.

Hey Peoples, Here's a new demo reel. (Terrible terrible compression, but this isn't the final version, just something to get feedback on.) Everything done in A:M http://www.alonso-soriano.com/anim/SorianoDemo.mpg 5.4Mb Mpg (so you can view it in whatever you want) What do you think? I'm looking for brutal critiques. What needs to go, where can improvements be made? I know the audio is off (only audio in 1 piece) by a frame or two but I'm pretty sure that happened when I was stitching it all together. Suggestions on order? Some things are from my last demo, do they still belong? Be achingly blunt, please! Thanks. -Alonso

This is my A:M rendition of Mount Sinawava in Zion National Park in Southern Utah. I am using this model to try to get rays of sunlight through clouds. This scene is entirely lit with a single klieg light high above the mountain peak with Z-buffered shadows. I also rendered with multipass with 4 passes and soften on.

Sorry all but its me again with more questions. The model I'm working with at the moment has a few short chains of bones in the hair and breasts with Dynamic Constraints to give it some "free" secondary motion as she moves. This motion is determined by A:M based on how fast the model moves in real time. Faster, more motion, slower less. Just like in the real world. To capture this motion for NetRender to use, a scene needs to have the Dynamics baked first. However when baking, A:M plays through the scene, making keyframes for the Dynamics as it goes, much slower than in realtime. And it is at this slower speed that A:M now calculates the amount of motion on an…

I'm starting some modelling work for a game I'm working on. This is Beth Darwin, a girl in her early teens. The model is going to be used in real time, so I have to keep an eye on patch count - I plan to export it as a PLY at detail level '4' (8 polys/patch) and use my own converter to get it to SMD format (a nice, easy to understand format that Half-Life uses.) Here's the character design - these pictures were drawn at two different times, and yes, there are some differences: -Sean Givan

Hello, all. Well, this week's Animation Showdown got me really down, so I decided to cheer myself up with a new head. (Some people say a new brain is in order instead, but I just laugh at them. Hysterically. Until the persons in white coats come...) Anyway, here he is thus far, in a quick turnaround. He's my usual low-patch cartoony fare, but I think he might have potential for the future. I do wonder where to go with him next, as far as clothes and a body of some sort. Right now I'm leaning toward a gas station uniform, but I don't know why. Suggestions welcome. turnaroundhead_sor.mov

Hi all. After a considerable hiatus I dusted off my ongoing project of cheating on backgrounds on my webcomic Rhapsodies (Previous attempts can be seen here) This time I started working on one of the strip's principle sets/locations, Lysistrata Books a progressive bookstore owned by one of the cast members. After a rather frustrating false start of trying to alter one of the sets in the extra's dvd I went back in treating it like a television set with only two walls (after all we never see the others) Anyway so far this approach is going fairly well with only a few stumbling blocks. These being so far trying to find the correct recipe for plate glass (yes I know 30…

Not sure where the old thread is in the archives, if it's there at all. This is a render in V15 of an older project where I was trying to animate this tree growing from a sprout to a full grown tree. This is the full grown tree. This tree is actually a large set of smaller "branch" models assembled in the choreography. If I could assemble them as a single composite model it would be preferred, but I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I wish I could iteratively build the whole tree from a small number of tweakable branch models. Any ideas? Here is an early test animation with a scaled down version: Tree growth animation test. And a closeup: T…

Hey Everyone! been a while since I posted, so I thought I'd show off my newly polished T. rex skull. I started building this way back when, but I just recently got my hands on a great scale model of one, so I thought I'd try to fix it (you can see an older render of it in my avatar). Some things about the render: The model is just under 4600 patches, and this render uses the cool new radiosity features, so there's just one klieg light in it, and it took just over 30 minutes to render on my 2.3 GHz Athlon64. http://www.dinocarl.com/trexskull.jpg Carl

Hi all, Long time now, since we had a challenge .... so the idea occurred to me: Why not let`s make some minichallenge for "this time of the year"? Take or build your favourite chara-model, change him into a Santa Claus and do some very small animation with him like waving into the camera, ringing a bell, presenting some gift etc. at best include some gag and well that`s it. Should be fun and not to much work and we all would have some christmasgreetings to send to our friends and also maybe get some christmas props for everybody to use. By the way, somebody has some deer or elk, he likes to share? I would suggest a deadline of 1…

While I'm putting along on Captain Splines in the David Rogers book, I've undertaken my own learning experience model. Here is the first round of modeling. I'm aiming for an end result that will look as much stop motion as computer animated, animating virtual maquettes with the software. This particular model is a Svankmajer/Giacometti/Bellmer beastie: a virtual paper cutout of Georges Bataille's face, torso, and hands, scotch-taped to wire limbs. (Man: modeling scotch tape over bent wires is not easy, at least to this neophyte!) Here are some renders and a turntable. One criticism I invite is what do I need to do to make my turntable more "industry stan…

Hello All, This is my first attempt at a car model. It's more a study to see if I can model low poly vehicles quickly for use in real time simulations in Dark Basic Pro. I've got a good workflow going converting from A:M to .X, by way of exporting as an .obj, then opening and texturing in Ultimate Unwrap, and using UU's .x exporter. This model is "loosley" based on the RX-7, and, I didn't quite get all the lines, but, I just want to know if I'm heading in the right direction. Its just the body now, all in one piece. I'm not trying to get every little detail, because for realtime it would be just too many polys. Mostly, it would be nice to get the basic shapes of ca…

I just finished working with a local video production house on this project. I know a guy there, he ask if I could do it, I said yes .... then I went and learned how to do it, though I didn't tell "him" that. I had been playing with AM for a couple of months I had 7 days to do the project. More than once during this project I thought I had royally screwed up taking the job, but I learned a ton about AM and in the end I'm glad I did it. I have been a Graphic Designer for years and own my own business in that field I had dabbled in 3D with Bryce but never anything serious ..... but now I'm hooked I did the animated logos and all the 3D on the proje…

I've got the animation complete, it runs about 11 minutes long, and is 37 MB in size. I was able to save it using Sorensen codec. You can download it here to see it http://dogst.com/SWimmortal.mov. It's 320x240. It's my voice doing all the audio, I have a couple people who'll do the different voices, I just haven't been able to get them over to record them, but this will at least give you the story and soundtrack. My skill as an animator is limited, so with a couple minor changes, this is how it will look. Let me know what you think so far. Thanks Dan

Hi, I'm starting to get the hang of A:M so i thought i'd go ahead and make my first model. I decided to make a dancing mexican cactus (why, I don't know). I've finished the model and a continueous dancing action. I downloaded a La cucaracha MP3 and then I started a new choreography. I decided to make the camera spin around the cactus while it dances, but I'm having some trouble with that. I made a path consraint to the path and made another aim at constraint from the camera to the cactus. But whenever I play it the camera stays in its default position and on the last frame appears on the path even though my enforcement is at 100%. Lastly how to I take pictures of…

I did some more work with Instant Meshes program. It appears the -align to boundaries- button helps to get the output quads where you want them. This is especially helpful when you want to -copy/flip/attach- later in A:M. Attached are two pictures and a short .MOV that I made with an imported .OBJ of a spaceman. I can see that the models are not pretty, but because they are small and smooth, you can get useful results. The whole process of importing an .OBJ into Instant Meshes, outputting the reconfigured .OBJ and importing it into A:M only takes a minute or two. The pictures show the original .OBJ on the left and the Instant Meshes version on the right. …
