Robert has started a thread about Bioshock's Big Daddy character in this thread: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showt...t=0#entry245969 I really liked the character and asked Robert for approval to model Big Daddy also. With his ok on the subject, I splined away. This is my humble beginning, um, I mean Big Daddy's humble beginning. Critiques and comments always welcome.

Hi, Thought it was about time to post something instead of simply reading everyone else's posts! I've been working on this 'guy' for the last couple of months, in between work, kids and all that... I've finally finished the basic model and now need to start tweeking / texturing / rigging etc. I'm armed with many tutorials (thanks to ShaunF for his wonderful and inspirational website, and 3DArtz for the CogJoints tutorial), so this could take a long while. Not even really sure what I'm going to do with him other than practise some animation, although I don't think this guy will be the brightest of sparks - I think I'll have a lot of fun with his eyes. Any thoughts,…

Seeing Johnl3D's Opus inspired me to start working on mine again. I'm still bothered by creases, but I'm starting to feel like maybe I'm getting the hang of splining. Still don't have the mouth done, but I've made some progress. Here are some pics. This is kind of a fake; I'm only doing half and will CFA when it's closer to being done. I just put two instances of the model in the chor and scaled one of them -100 on the x axis.

Hi all I had posted these in the tutorial section and thought it might be wise to post them here for more feedback. This is a character I have created for a music video I am producing for an Indie recording artist out of Buffalo, NY. It is going to be a combination of 3D and 2D. Please let me know what you all think. Cheers! They were created with the great help of Barry (Bizzle) and his amazing A:M Training DVD Bundle. I just finished rigging him and I will be modifying the model into a lioness soon. Storyboard is nearly complete and will be going to the client this week. Enjoy!

While I'm putting along on Captain Splines in the David Rogers book, I've undertaken my own learning experience model. Here is the first round of modeling. I'm aiming for an end result that will look as much stop motion as computer animated, animating virtual maquettes with the software. This particular model is a Svankmajer/Giacometti/Bellmer beastie: a virtual paper cutout of Georges Bataille's face, torso, and hands, scotch-taped to wire limbs. (Man: modeling scotch tape over bent wires is not easy, at least to this neophyte!) Here are some renders and a turntable. One criticism I invite is what do I need to do to make my turntable more "industry stan…

Started working on the Pod Bay interior for the Discover model. To make this model it's own complete set, I am going to include the Pod Bay doors and front wall sections (interior and exterior). The slider to control the doors will be part of this model now, and not the Discovery. So far, I have the rear and left walls modelled (with temporary textures on them). The floor and ceiling are blocked out as well. It's been tricky trying to get everything to scale without having any blue prints to work from, just screen grabs from the movie. The front section with the pod bay door openings, is just a temporary piece so I can get the other parts modelled and scaled in place…

I was just noticing that it took 165 million dollars to make the recent "Polar Express" aka "Children of the Corn Go on a Train Trip" or "Zombie Express" Now just thinking ahead I feel that movie opening weekend will gross 12 million tops this opening weekend. I hope they prove me wrong. But really do you think it will do that well. I always wondered where people get there funding to make these things? Can you only imagine taking 165 million and splitting it on this website among 20 or 30 small groups. How many movies of similiar quality could be made. I mean seriously I wish we had a large animation fund where we could split it up. If only Ho…

Here's a look at a model I'm working on. The original sketches in the corner were done by my wife, she has a wonderful drawing style (I think, anyway), that's almost anime, but not quite. The head is coming along nicely, I think, but the areas on the body that concern me are the shoulder area next to the breast (I've highlighted it in red) where there are 4 five point patches in a row. Is this going to be a problem when the shoulder moves? and if so, what can I do to fix it? Also, is the butt going to cause me problems as is? Will I be able to fix them with some smartskinning? And how does it look so far to you? Thanks, Lazlo

Well, I foolishly decided to dress up my main character in a cloak, which means a whole lot of cloth animation. No way was I gonna do all that by hand. True, the new v.12 SimCloth is right around the corner, but realistic cloth movement is actually kinda distracting when it comes to cel-style animation. You never see Batman's knees poke around under his cape when he walks, y'know? I needed something real-looking, but simplified. I figured I could get a good side-to-side swing using Dynamic Constraints, and I elected to "cheat" the cloak outward a bit, just far enough so the legs wouldn't pass through it. Rigging the cloak took forever--56 bones arranged in a cyl…

Hey Peoples, Here's a new demo reel. (Terrible terrible compression, but this isn't the final version, just something to get feedback on.) Everything done in A:M http://www.alonso-soriano.com/anim/SorianoDemo.mpg 5.4Mb Mpg (so you can view it in whatever you want) What do you think? I'm looking for brutal critiques. What needs to go, where can improvements be made? I know the audio is off (only audio in 1 piece) by a frame or two but I'm pretty sure that happened when I was stitching it all together. Suggestions on order? Some things are from my last demo, do they still belong? Be achingly blunt, please! Thanks. -Alonso

My daughter kicked the plug out before I could finish it but here it is. I still havent added cp weights, smartskinning or even comstraints although I am reading up on them. The animated lacks weight and the timing is off (things I was trying to fix before the plug was pulled).

I moved this from http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=17591&st=40 because it started to take on a life of it's own. Here is the latest render of this WIP. I read a post a while back that mentioned double patches between a light source and an object you want shielded from the light. I did this on the inside of the fireplace, but it still seems to let the light through. Can someone refresh my memory on how to block light to the inside of the chimmney? Comments and critique welcome.

Just an animating exercise with some of the Hash resources. All done in a chor. action, and not finished yet although, any crits. welcome. I'm still trying to get a handle on this key-framing business. Barry Zundels CD was very inspirational for me and helped break the ice with animating in A:M. Showing His method of positioning the character at key positions first, using just the model bone, and then filling in the motion "in between" using the bones later, made it a lot easier. magic7.mov

I made this guy totally from scratch for the july image contest in Hash`s page and arranged all the textures in Photoshop. He's very shy and with no self-esteem, but it doesn`t matter 'cause he carries a big bad heavy laser gun! Send any opinions please, im just starting and i would appreciate any comments! Thanx! Eos

Hey guys. I've been working on that experimental head I did a while back and I'm up to a minute of animation. It's really just a test but it's a little short in itself. I hope you like it. I would value any crits on it as I want to put this on my portfolio, so don't hold back. PS I'll be putting in a puff of dust to make him sneeze when I get my video editor.

Here's a five second logo I worked on for a friend with the original concept drawing that he provided. I made 640x480, 1280x720 and 1920x1080 versions...this is the 1280x720 version...1.0 gamma, H264 compressed Quicktime. There are plenty of things I wish I had done better, but I think overall it came out alright. animated_logo_1280x720_1.0_gamma_30FPS_H264.mov

I've got a rough WIP for the July 2008 11 Second Club animation contest. I thought that I'd play w/ getting lip synch in Animation Master and submit a Work In Progress. I got two quick responses. I just grabbed what was convenient, Shaggy, and simple enough for me to animate in two days. Any other of the models or rigs that would work better here? I'm just getting started w/ designing and creating the sequence, so the simpler the better. Here is the youtube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIPw3GFV8z8 thanks, Tim R

I started over last month on a model that I started in June of last year. I quit working on it in July of 2007 but recently I wanted to create a small animation and decided he would be the star. So I started rigging the character with the poseable rig and it has taken me three tries to figure out the model itself was the problem. So I rebuilt the chest and shoulders and then worked on the head, reduced splines and now I am asking for critiques once again on the look. Steve

Hi, I'm starting to get the hang of A:M so i thought i'd go ahead and make my first model. I decided to make a dancing mexican cactus (why, I don't know). I've finished the model and a continueous dancing action. I downloaded a La cucaracha MP3 and then I started a new choreography. I decided to make the camera spin around the cactus while it dances, but I'm having some trouble with that. I made a path consraint to the path and made another aim at constraint from the camera to the cactus. But whenever I play it the camera stays in its default position and on the last frame appears on the path even though my enforcement is at 100%. Lastly how to I take pictures of…

Hello all, I have been a little slow in getting this post out. I have been REALLY busy. Many of you do not know me. I am not really very good at AM! I grew up on Lightwave but have always been amazed at the power and capabilities of AM since version 3, my first version. I saw it at SIGGRAPH but when I got home with it and tried to use it, I wanted to kill everyone! Needless to say documentation has been lacking for a while now! Anyway, I tried again at version 5. Same results.. so I continued doing my work in Lightwave and Maya. Then I got a wild hair and decided to try it again... version 11! Last year I produced and animated a direct to DVD project for Hasbro Ent…

Posted these yesterday but they got bumped so I am reposting today... Some characters we are working on, my friend John Aretekis had A:M for about a year and then sort of gave it up. When I asked what kind of work he had accomplished he said he had modelled some characters, so I asked to see them and they were WONDERFUL! He has this wolf, 3 male fat hiphop piggies and 3 female fat hiphop piggies, all decalled and modelled. So I borrowed them and rigged them and now we are trying to conjure-up a '3 lil pigs/ goldilocks' modern day takeoff. This is a quick animation test with minimal lip poses for tracking to a clip I nabbed off TV... In this re-post I am using…

Hi guys! Here are my last animations. The first is a "jump exercise". The focus of the animation is the jump, the rest of the animation I made it just for fun The second, is a little exercise of facial expression with the insect man that come included in the Justin Barret's CD tutorial. The animation is only 2 seconds, and only one word to make Lipsync, but I tried to make it the best I could. Jumping. Please Right Click And Save Target As... Jumping. It's been a while since I posted anything in these forums, but I thought I would show you all the model I've been working on over the last few hours for a game I plan to write. This isn't rigged brilliantly, but I don't need a lot of animation as I am writing a 2D game with pre-rendered graphics. The final result will be a much smaller penguin, but I made it larger than need be so I can shrink it later in the development process.

This is a continuation of a topic started here: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=18978 Below is an Image of my model to which I applied a bump decal with straight lines which render with jags. The decal is un-edited in the UV editor. No points were dragged or the model flattened. Any ideas on how to fix this? or a better approach to straight lines? Pixmite P.S. Hi all. After a considerable hiatus I dusted off my ongoing project of cheating on backgrounds on my webcomic Rhapsodies (Previous attempts can be seen here) This time I started working on one of the strip's principle sets/locations, Lysistrata Books a progressive bookstore owned by one of the cast members. After a rather frustrating false start of trying to alter one of the sets in the extra's dvd I went back in treating it like a television set with only two walls (after all we never see the others) Anyway so far this approach is going fairly well with only a few stumbling blocks. These being so far trying to find the correct recipe for plate glass (yes I know 30…

Here's the deal. Like many animators, I've got an elaborate set in my choreography. Over two dozen models just for the one room, ten lights, ten cameras (so far). Although it was necessary to place all of these elements individually, I often need to deal with them as a group. For example, when doing test renders, I may need to toggle the entire set on and off. Or I may need to flip all the lights off so I can add in another light. Right now, doing stuff like this is really tedious. Clicking through the property window on 26 different models and setting each one's 'Active' property to OFF, and then back to ON when I'm done, is getting old real fast. Managing…

So I do not own a program yet that saves in "AI" and so I downloaded a demo of corelx5 draw to try out and make some shapes to use the Illustrator file import wizard in AM . It seem to me to be a pretty nifty way of saving some time on certain kinds of modeling. Especially for buildings, walls , windows , things with holes etc. I was kind of curious what others thought of this process. Do they use it often, seldom , never ? Are there any pitfalls , or issues . The splines it created so far for me seemed decent when imported and need little fixing but I have not really done a lot of this. So woul…
