GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.

User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.

I want to make a background so it looks as if my character is in a white box. I want there to be white walls on the sides, one white wall in the back, and a white floor. I tried to make a box and then to take off the front, but it didn't seem to work. Please give me some tips or samples if you have any.

Hi, I'm Jonathan. I'm new to A:M. But that's not really important. I wanted to make a cube, just a simple cube. From scratch. And everytime I plot points for a cube, the lines the points make keep bending, making my cube look like a kind of square-ish marshmallow. Is there a way to fix this? _Jonathan..^~^Meow.

Can someone point me in the right direction for an explanation on how to use constraints to have an actor grab and hold objects in his hand? I have his fingers wrapped around the object (in my case, the hilt of a sword). Do I have to constrain the hilt bone to the hand or finger bones or vice versa? Do I use translate to and/or kinematic constraints? Nothing I try seems to get the object to stick in its original position. For example, the hilt of the sword jumps to the outside of the hand.

I'm trying--struggling, really--to get my head around poses. As I try and fail to create new poses, the pose count attributed to the model keeps growing, so by the time I get one set, it's "Pose 8," and there seems to be no way to delete the other 7 so I don't have them cluttering up my project. This is especially true of the first 5, which seem to be default poses, but I can't find a way to edit them. How do I delete those I don't want and edit those I do once they're set? Thanks. I'm none too pleased with the pose tutorials I've seen--or, haven't--so I'm fighting my way through this, and losing!

I am trying to work through the SHOW SOME BACK BONE tut. I follow along with the online video tut, but when I open the 2001 Skeleton rig, there are bones missing. Also during the video tut, when the instructor clicks on groups of bones, the grouping bracket that comes up looks like a little reel to reel tape recorder. That bracket does not come up for me when I click on different bone groups. Can anyone help me out? I am using version 13.01 Thanks in advance! T MAC

Rodney, I have a very basic question- and figured this is the place to post it. I'm working through the exercises and am having trouble with posing Rabit. In essence, I want to rotate Rabbit's foot- but every time I click on it the whole leg moves. The video manual moves through this step very quickly. It appears that the pointer changes (from a standard arrow to two ying-yang arrows) when the foot rotates. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Brian

I created a simple gear. I made a 360 degree rotation action that takes four seconds to make a complete rotation. When I drop the gear into a choreography things go wonky. The chor only runs for one second instead of four. Here are snap shots of the properties: If I can't get this to work for just one revolution, how will I be able to use it in an extended choreography? Thanks.

I'm trying to make some grass and i'm following along on http://www.hash.com/am2004/Modeling/Hair/index.htm but when i change the color of the blades from green to yellow on the diffuse color timeline, the color changes in blocks--that is it begins with a green, then abruptly changes to a lighter green, and then to a yellow. there seems to be no gradient.

I'm having trouble getting the right results using the flatten command, and its mostly because of the instructions in the manual. It says "To correctly orient the pivot, click on the Red handle at the end of the Green Axis (to orient the pivot around the X axis) and drag in the direction of the arrow in the image below until the Properties panel shows -90° rotation in the X axis." But the properties panel doesn't tell me anything!

Hello guys... I have a basic question, so I thought it would be best to post it here. I want to combine live-action with a CG-character. The CG-Character is a simple one like Thom from the cd... (a bit more complex so, but doesnt matter...) The character is connected to a bunch of keys (key fob). A real person will throw the bunch of keys into the air and fetch it again, etc. There will be some detail-shots of the keys and the key fob. Now my question, What would you do: - Would you try to use a real key fob and key it away? After that, use the video as a rotoscope and add the 3d-character above? ok like the title says im looking for a way to make the ghosting effect seen in ninja gadien , if you havent played its pretty simple, Ryu( the good guy) sees a bad guy with a way to big head ,ryu dashes towards the bad guy but as he does blueish ghost trail him in the exact pose he was at that time, then bad guy loses head , happy ninja

Ok it has dawned on me that for some reason AM is currently using only one of my cores on my quad core machine , is there a way to tell AM to use other cores to speed up its rendering time or is it just set to 1 for a reason .

Hi guyz Ive just been wondering about something, have been working in Maya and have recently moved over to Master and find it an awesome package. question is: in Maya you can take two CV's (as they call it) and attach them (merge them into one) how can I do that with A.M? what I mean is, if I want to attach two pieces (splines) that are seperate, and want to make it into one spline. have made a character and in the modeling process it came up. am just curious to know if it is necessary to do this? I know it probebly sounds like a stupid question but,hey Im a nube to A.M,,,,,,,,,, gimme a break! hehe

I gave each foot a null, but when I try to move the null to move the foot. Either the foot doesn't move or only the foot moves. I need help with the null so when I move it the foot will move and the leg will follow and place its self.

I'm just not getting this light thing. I made a space type ship. In modeling mode, I added a light in the center of the ship. I wanted the light to shine out. The light shines out but the model turned black. Is this normal?

I was just wondering how much of the multi-pass everyone uses. I've read that 16 is the best, but then they have up to 256. Does anyone go that high? And if so, what would be the situation. I was wondering if anyone had a chart......for simple renders use 1 to 4, higher quality use.... and so on.

Hello All. Can anyone tell me why my Flower Power petals will not generate shadows? It looks like petal1 might be, but none of the other 12 petals do. The Stem and Leaves cast shadows when rendered. Thanks. Mr. Bill

Hi, it may be sound stupid but I've been searching the help doc, the tutorial resources and the forum and haven't found it. I have 2 cameras in a choreography and I want to render it with the first camera for (example) 10 seconds and the second camera for 15 seconds. How do I switch? also, is it possible to ask to play choreography2 right after choreography1? thanks tido

This is really driving me nuts! ATM I only have my workstation to render with, so I do my rendering when I got to bed, and work with the footage the next morning. Each time (twice now) I have tried to render at some point the program just stops. I check my PC and the program is turned off, and I have not movie. I use Avid Express to edit with so I export to Quicktime at DV resolution @ 29.97 fps. I am exporting using the 2D render, and for shot stills it works. Is there an issue with QT render? Or could it be my virus software? PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi all, Wondering if anyone has suggestions for a good online file storage site? I'll need one to place some of these finished TAoAM projects... I've done a google for them, but to be honest, I'm not sure which is reliable, secure, etc. I've tried one in the past and it seemed fine - until I tried referencing files I'd uploaded there. It started blocking the files (and it was nothing copyrighted). When I logged in to check on the files they were deleted. So I really don't want to find another one where they mess with, block or lose your files like that.. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Mike

I recently got a new computer and downloaded v14 from the Hash site - for some reason my library folders are empty - all the folders are there, but nothing in them. I opened up v13 and not having the problem in there. I went to the site and re-downloaded, but did not fix the problem.. any ideas? Thanks

How does this work? Sometimes I seem to be able to do it but others... not so much. I can drag select a "group" in the chor and move those items but it doesn't put in a key frame for translation. I need to move about 200 model shortcuts together as a unit and key frame the translation. After selecting them all if I use the arrow keys or type in the translation properties only the last one selected will move. In the past I've been able to select a bunch of chor objects this way to set "Active" on or off... but after awhile it stops working. Any help appreciated. -vern

OK i have been trying to add some roundness to my creations with circles and ovals and such . and to that point i have been using the lathe tool to create wheels that are well ...... round. but i have encountered a problem. it seams that the lathe tool works on a 8 point system while the grid is only 4 . when i try to use the snap to grid option the points at 0 90 180 270 snap into correct position but the points at 45 135 225 315 snap to what ever point is closest. is there a way i can collect the cps as a full group and select only one of them to snap into the grid to aline the circle???

On my iMac, I have opened the model 'Kid.mdl' from the extras DVD and I want to save it to my hard drive so I can give him some speech pose sliders. When I right click on kid in the objects section of the PWS, I get the option to 'Save As..' I choose that and the window opens for choosing where to save it. It does not let me select ANY different location to save on my computer. Am I missing a step?

I use a G5 Power Mac with an Apple "Mighty Mouse" which has a roller ball for scrolling horizontally and vertically, plus it provides "right click" cabpabilities similar to a PC mouse with two buttons and a scroll wheel. The problem seems to be that when using this mouse in A:M (Macintosh OS X 10.4.6 & A:M Version 2005 12.0u) the scroll function of my mouse is not recognized. If I switch to a third pary two-button mouse with a scroll wheel like Logitech's Optical Notebook mouse, I can scroll (up/down) within frames/windows that have scroll bars and within windows that use the zoom feature, the scroll wheel acts as a zoom tool that allows zooming in/out quickly. …

Hi I don't know if anyone else is having this problem as well as me. I'm trying to log into the community from ver 12u and keep on getting an error message that reads: Exception #23.Socket error in stream. And in ver13 beta 1 i am getting the following message:Cube Map (Cross) In both instances the program completely hang's and does nothing. Can anyone help or shed any light on this for me? i'm trying to learn the v13s.... 1. can you scale a bone along with it's cp's when modeling? 2. how do i numerically and absolutely change the position of a cp when modeling? i thought there was a little triangle that would call up a box with the xyz coords, but i can't find that anymo. everyone old is new again.... -jon
