Charles Babbage (DrPhibes) works at a shop that fabricates many large display items for various clients. Charles designed this giant mechanical dragon in A:M for the Disney World theme park. He modeled it in A:M, then exported to a large milling machine. "It is milled out in polystyrene foam, than we use that as a pattern to layup fiberglass. The finished parts are fiberglass with a fabricated steel frame. The head is carbon fiber," Charles told me on Facebook earlier this year.

I'm posting this recent short animation I made with A:M with a note of thanks to everyone at Hash. Among others, Robert Holmén and Mark Largent have been extremely quick and helpful in answering questions and solving problems I encounter onVenriloquist Show.mov this journey of learning animation, and A:M in particular. This software and these forums are so very important to me - thank you!

Hello, As some may already know, I have been a user of A:M for more than 30 years. I walked right into the front office of Hash HQ to buy my first copy in 1993, and I still have the disks. I am not usually able to show much of my work outside of the studio, however, at the request of Robert Holmén I have assembled a brief look at how I use A:M in my design work. Even though in my job I need to know a large library of applications, I still like using A:M when I can because of how quickly I can get from an idea to something moving on the screen. Often, I am using A:M to create previz animatics just to show conceptually how something will likely move and to c…

Hello ... I would like to announce a new game that I created called "Izzy the Busy Squirrel". It is a simple puzzle-strategy-memory game. All of the models and animations were created with Animation:Master and then exported with the AMXtex plug-in exporter created by Chris Roy (plus some other converters as well) ... If anyone is interested, I do have a demo version of the game you can download from my website as well as a video tutorial of how to play. Please visit ---> http://www.pencilwedgees.com and select the "GAME" link to find out more. Please note that if you are running Vista or 7 that you MAY need to also install DirectX 9.0c ... I do have some trouble shoo…

http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showt...mp;hl=Composite While looking for more info on compositing I came across this thread from 2006 about a plug in that Marcel Bricman had written for T Wessling. There was some talk that he may have introduced it to the wider AM community later on and I wondered if there was any news on that now ? regards simon Apologies. Just found another thread about Sumi and couldn't stop this one. My Mistake.

Some may have guest it, other may not: The entry with the chameleon on it was mine. If you are interested I want to show of a little about that fellow because it was a quite interesting workflow. I used A:M to create the model (and rig), gave it some basic materials, used BakeSurface from A:M and exported as an OBJ with a high polycount (I think 256 or 1024 subdivisions, I am not sure...), brought the model with the UV-set to 3dCoat v4. There I painted all the little dots, shades and the displacementmaps (bump is done using a procentual material in A:M), saved the textures and back in A:M I rendered it out... it worked very well and I could paint over seams …

I've been doodling again with "paper dolls" and experimenting with a variety of ways to render "flat" characters, to sorta get a "scribbly" look. To document for myself (and hopefully others will find some seed to use), here are some of the variations on my Paper Man character - seen in this first image. I think I still like this render style best for these characters - but it was worth it to experiment for possible variations some other time

When I saw the Trailer for the New Wonder Woman movie, I noticed that they are going to be using the Fokker Eindecker single winged fighter. I have always thought this to be one of the coolest looking fighters from the WWI era. A good number of years ago, I modeled the Eindecker for a short movie clip. It had the same color scheme as the one in the movie. When you open it, you will find on close inspection that it lacks detailed parts. But it is a great start for someone who wants to improve upon it and make it even better and more detailed. I used a volumetric mist object the other day, and came across a lot of settings that I haven't been able to find an explanation for anywhere. Not in the tech ref, nor here in the forum. Anyone got any idea what "mistiness" does? Or "sampling rate"? Or "Height" x 2 (not the one in transform)? Help would be much appreciated :-)

Has the Setup Machine 2 been dropped from compatible plugins? I copied the TSM2 files to the HXT folder in A:M16 but they are not available from the plugins menu now. I haven't seen an official statement regarding TSM and A:M16 so I'm not sure if this is an issue for A:M Reports or if this is normal behaviour for A:M16. Any clues?

In several chors, My Midge model won't show its bones in skeletal mode or cp's in muscle mode. If I pick through the bones in the pws I can manipulate them but that's really slow and cumbersome. The other models I've checked seem to be okay but this one keeps acting up. is there something I'm overlooking that would cause this to happen?

If i pass any arbitrarily shaped object through another surface (lets start with something as simple as a plane) how can i capture the shape of the intersection on that surface at any moment? For example, the intersection of this torus with the plane would be a couple of ovals. How could I capture that? I can sort of get the edges of the object as they pass thru the plane by putting an orthogonal camera very close to the plane... TorusThroughPlane.mov ... but it misses pixels and I'd really like to have the shapes filled, not just the outlines. I'm trying to find a way to better simulate the disturbance an object makes immediately arou…

It has been a while since I made a complete micromovie. Let me say, doing a study of Alfred Hitchcock's directing through one of his masterpieces has been a great learning experience. I had a great time doing this project. I was determined to finish by year's end and I made it with a week to spare! Keeping true to the "One-Man-One-Computer" ethos, I used a number of the public models very much to the improvement the piece. Let me give special kudos to the builders of the "Rear Window" set. It is a wonderful miniverse. The set looks great from long shots to extreme close-ups. Bravo and thank you to the organizers and contributors to the 2012 Forum Project. …

In the past I have posted about 3D printing from A:M, however, this time I thought I would show some of the work from my day job and how A:M plays a big part in it. We recently finished work on ICE AGE LIVE. An ice show that will be touring Europe for the next few years. We designed and built the large puppets and costumes for the show. In order to reproduce the characters as accurately as possible, I took the original animation geometry from Blue Sky Studios into Animation Master, and after a bit of modification to fit human performers where necessary, I patterned directly off the digital character within A:M to create flat patterns for our fabric department …

Have had difficulties with mystery channels appearing in the PWS ( I hope I'm using the right word with channels ? ) and the rotate handles on bones suddenly growing very large but never known what might be the cause. Yesterday morning, I went through all the models in the chor and deleted the oddities then worked on the walk of one of the figures, having hid the other models. In the evening I unhid the others and prepared to render it out, only to find that the mystery channels had reappeared, along with the elongated roll handles. I've circled both in this screen grab. The problem seemed to come about when the models were group selected in the PWS…

Thought I would start a new topic (instead of spreading it around), to post my homeworks that I've been doing for iversity.org's Design 101 course, using A:M. These assignments are not supposed to take more than 1 hour. hoo hah. So I've been trying (rarely succeed in keeping to 1 hour)...and I've been using models that I already have, modified, recomposed Most people are using photos, hand drawing, other media - quite inspiring. I haven't used A:M for all my assignments - but thought I would share here. Some of these were posted already in other threads...so bear with me.

What is Parallel Reload? I didn't know when I made this opening title and I don't know today but it is something important you need to know if you have the giant enterprise switch by Northern Telecom AKA the Meridian 1. I did this while working at Nortel in 1997 or '98. This was my first attempt at rigorously accurate mechanical modeling. I found the original project elements while looking through my debris and have re-rendered it in HD for modern eyes. For the most part, the original PRJ done in v6 loaded right up in v18. I just had to revisit a few of the animation curves and refind a few image files. The many long, thin horizontal lines …

I needed a 'cupid' character for my animation idea for Jet's Pizza... didn't have a lot of time. Was considering 2D 'hack' animation... I scribbled a design on paper and noticed my baby Cupid was mostly drawn with circles... which in 3D relate to SPHERES! So I 'sphered' together a very quick baby model, and after adding some details- had a good Cupid. Since I knew the actions I needed were quite limited (shoot an arrow) 13 bones were all I used to throw an impromptu rig for animating him. I am growing fond of using the Gradient material when toon shading, here I placed one on his wings. These Jet's animations I am hoping will continue to come... they wanted 2 for Vale…

Used A:M to 'arch-vis' a dream I have for an add-on to my house... basically, moving a wall out and making a better entry. The house was built in 1930 and over the years people added-on and connected new sections, the wall I want to blow-out has a huge window on it and is badly insulated- lets a lot of cold in-in the winter... I used Google maps to obtain a satellite plan-view of my home and fleshed-out the walls and rooflines, then made a pose that had the revisions I have in mind and animated it in a chor. I hope to be able to show this to contractors to see if it can be done. 561Lakeside (1).mp4

Robcat spotted this movie on my YouTube channel and suggested I post it to the Forum. The movie is composited from two clips made in A:M. First clip (the color pattern): Years ago I made light boxes using Xmas lights on posts that supported cylinders with cutout patterns; the tops of the cylinders were vaned so heat rising from the lights drove the rotation of the cylinders. The light patterns were projected onto a sheet of translucent plastic. Recently I got to thinking about light boxes and wondered if I could simulate the mechanism in A:M. After some trial and error — that being trying to find a method for doing the cutouts without actually modeling each …

I was just wondering if Hash had any plans to update their import / export plugins and perhaps add some. I would be interested in an FBX export/import plugin as it's one of the standards and something I require (As I'm sure I'm not the only one). If not soon or not ever, I was also wondering if there was anyone else in the community that works with DX Studio and or Unity 3D and knows of a nice transition to use Animation Master in their game development pipeline. DX Studio uses .X files however I'm not to sure if the export is 100% compatible as I've not had much luck with it. This could be due to me not knowing what options I should be selecting as output…

Nothing earth shattering; just a different way to layout patches based on the idea of retopolgy; i.e. using an existing model as a template for a new mesh. The first image shows the original model - the red hood of a 1955 Chevy truck - modeled by Stian and generously lent to me. As you can see he formed the surface in the typical fashion by drawing splines along the major contour lines. But as usual when you have a cylindrical/spherical detail in a rectangular surface you can't avoid generating 3 and/or 5 point patches; which, as you can see in the second image, sometimes are not realistically smooth no matter how much you tweak the bias handles. Believe me I tried. …

Hey - I took a chance to do a job today with the new 'Snap To Surface' tool, and it saved the day! Don't know how I woulda done this without it. Shawn Rogers asked if I could model this 'NEWFANGLED' soccer ball(ref photo) for him... at first I though- NO WAY, but then figured the S2S tool may help in the process and it could be a good test for it. Plus I love the challenge, the ball looks SO simple, yet it is really QUITE a modeling dilemma. 1st- I lathed a really dense sphere and exported it as an OBJ. Then imported it into the chor as a prop... this was to be the surface for me to draw on, activating the S2S function. A couple false starts, a couple rounds of …
