'kay, so here's the piston, cam and flywheels. yet to do are the cylinder and the stand. I'm trying to work (at this point) without using decals or materials. they will be added later. It's based on an old Popular Mechanics article where a candle is used to "power" this engine. The flame from the candle fills the cylinder, then a valve closes off the flame. This creates a vacuum in the cylinder which is the "power stroke" which opens the valve and the flame is then readmitted to the cylinder. and so on. I've got to get the flywheels and piston to look as though they were machined stainless steel. This is just a start, and I need to study up on reflect…

Hey everyone. I've been reading this forum for a while, and asked a question here and there. I would love to answer some too, but usually I just don't know the answers to people's questions. Hopefully that will change over time, but I'm still a novice, for sure. I thought I could be somewhat useful though by sharing my project in the WIP section and describing my process a little bit. If this post gets any kind of response, I may continue to post updates or answer questions or more likely ask questions on how to overcome my latest technical problem as I continue working on this short. I've been working on my first animated short film on and off for several months. I …

I've spent the best part of the last two days trying to make the X-Machine float alongside The Sentinel. On the first try, it and the umbilical were part of the Beast model. There was a chain of 10 bones starting at Beast's pelvis and running out to the X-Machine. This didn't work because Beast has a rolling waddle, and this just yanked the machine left and right. It appeared to be firmly mounted on a curved pole which was bolted to the saddle. Also, moving the machine always kinked the chain and fine-tuning each bone was going to take years. Then I cut the machine and cable out of the model and broke it into two parts: machine and cable and Translated them to Beast. Same…

may_11_sec_29b_h264_framecounter.mov All major animation is complete. Still needs to be polished.... especially head and eye movements. Most of it is still in linear or stepped, with the body and arms splined. I can still make minor changes, but the major action will stay as is due to short time remaining. My character doesn't have eyebrows and I'm concerned it won't read as well as it should. The eyelids can be sculpted as if they're eyebrows, but I haven't done any of that. The render is very basic. I'd love to try Ambient Occlusion, but don't know if there's time since I don't have a clue about it. I'm curious to see if you all think the co…

It's been awhile - I couldn't even tell you how long; maybe as much as two years. Lack of funds, lack of processing power, lack of that extra computer or two, lack of time, etc. I had to make a choice between AM and guitar and I chose guitar. Things have not gone quite as planned, but how often in life do they? There hasn't been a day that I haven't missed playing in the realms of 3D modeling and rendering and I finally decided that it's become enough of a distraction that I need to scratch the itch. Guitar is still my overwhelming priority but I'm going to start spending a little time each day working with AM again. I can't say how much time that will be but it'll almost…

Hi, I've been planning to complete several projects in AM but I can't seem to get things rolling at a good pace. So I figured that if I post some WIPs I might be spurred along by the forum and eventually complete something. I usually have a few things going on at once so its a little difficult to concentrate on one project through to completion. I will try to change that for the new year. Hopefully I can find some success by doing this. The project I'm currently working on is fairly complex with numerous characters and a very detailed background with lots of action. It will be a still. I am doing this only for my own amusement, especially since it would probably be ea…

greetings my friends after a long period of thinking about it, i´ve decided to dismiss my short movie project "the lunch encounter" (the one with the guy and the cat). for several reasons: 1. the story wasn´t strong enough. 2. my animation skills are not good enough to compensate the rather weak story. 3. it´s too long. 4. i wasn´t 100% happy with the look anymore. also i realized i suck at story writing. i really do. i´m always starting to make a movie because i just want to do a short, not because i want to tell a story. maybe some of you can relate to that. i just have fun creating characters and props and sets and doing the lighting and stuff, …

Its going to be a 3D version of a German comic character: Die kleine Gruftschlampe. I am in touch with the creator Tikwa and doing a full 3d version of that character. I am not able to post a full picture of the character yet, but just google it. So far I did the cloth. Rendering is done in two steps: One regular render and one toon lines only render which gets layered onto the standard render. Cheers Heiner

The ALT snap bias aim feature is such a pleasure to use, I've regained my enthusiasm for an architectural model I set aside in 2009. It's my version of a Hollywood set of the grand old Pennsylvania Station built in New York in 1910 and demolished in 1963. I'm calling it a Hollywood version for three reasons. 1. Since my reference images from books and the Net only have a few readable dimensions I have to make a lot of "looks good to me" guesses. 2. The amount of detailing required for a 100% accurate copy is too staggering so I've simplified it while trying maintain a similar look. 3. The section of the building where people board a train is called the Con…

I'm rebuilding my favorite character, Clay... "we have the technology, we can rebuild him" For those who've never seen Clay, you can check out the old version at my web site. I'm pretty happy with the mesh and the more life-like appearance he's got now, but I can't help feeling that he looks kinda generic. Of course, textures will help with that but IMO, I think a good model should look great before texturing. So, if any of you kick-butt character designers have any suggestions on improving my beloved Clay, I'd love to hear about it! Thanks!

I am currently building some models for an animation I plan to make. I am just starting to grasp the animation aspects of AM or software period. The ship is from the concept I used as my personal photo which was one of my 1st models in AM. The "bot" is sortof a cross between a mech and a tank. I have a pilot for the vehicles but am having fun learning to rig. Any info that can help make bones and constraints easier to understand would be appreciated. As well info on modeling environments and lighting and camera control will be appreciated. The models are still in the assembly stage and are set into a hangar or what will eventually be a hangar with some adjustments for ref…

Hi all, Here's a WIP of a hair style on Lady Goodbody using the v.11 hair system. I call this one "the Miss America look". The renders are pretty speedy if you use lights with z-buffered shadows. And the hair looks better with those lights, too. Thanks Hash guys, especially Randy and Ken for bringing the Mac version along so far, and for the great hair system. Jim

This is my newest character that will be starring in a short that I'm working on. I was going for a Pixar style of character, and he looks pretty close to me. But tell me what you think. His name's Ted. P.S. I'll post his wires as soon as I get the chance. Until then I'll be hard at work fitting his rig. P.P.S I also noticed after the render was complete that I did not run Gama conversion. The piece is probably light enough to avoid problems, but if there are any problems please say so.

Hello - After trying to use decals for facial expressions I decided to go the modeling route. So.... Attached is the star of a short I'm working on. Posting for your comments as to: 1) How does this character's personality read? 2) What is this character? 3) I'm wondering how this simple environment plays? 4) I need to fix his pointy pupils, I know. I'm trying for simplicity and fun. My goal is to animate this fella. Thanks for any thoughts. Doug

Hi splinesmen, Haven't posted in a while... But I'm working hard. Here is a test of a character walking and sitting on a cube. The dynamic movements I seem to be having a problem with I may post a question about if I can't figure it out. anyway... depress5.mov The quicktime movie is 1.29 MB. I know I went too far by doing a final render, but I needed to test the low rez textures... to see how they measure up. I rendered him without his hair to look at the rendertimes of the textures. I saved max rez textures at 4000x and med rez textures at 2000x and low rez textures are about 1000x. Tell me what you think... even if you don't have a crit.

Answers in Genesis (AiG), Christian apologetics and creation science organization, as well as builders of Creation Museum in greater-Cincinnati, has redesigned their extremely popular website. A key feature of the redesigned site is a new "Get Started" section that features an introduction video ("About AiG") that includes one of my 3D animations that I created for them. www.AnswersInGenesis.org is the single most-popular Christian apologetics website, receiving over 50,000 unique visitors (not hits) every day, which is about 150,000 page views. In a month, the website reaches hundreds of thousands of unique vistors (again, not hits because that would register in the…

Well, I finally decided to finish this image. I didn't have any time so I made a simple background. Everything was made, rendered, and composited (A:M Composite) in A:M. Except for the blue gradient background, text, and some very minor paint fixes on parts of the constume webbing. I don't really know how to use Composite very well, but I'm fairly happy with my results. Bloom to the spec layer. Another Bloom to the rest. Tinted my ambient gradient. And some other stuff. I probably could have spent a little more time on the pose, but I decided enough was enough and just wanted to get it finished. I also posted this in the Showcase forum, here:…

Here's a preliminary test of one segment of the Christmas animation I'll be doing for the company where I work. This bit will come at the very end but I wanted to get it done early to make sure it would work. This is the material that's being interfered with by the model surface settings that I mentioned in the A:M v15 forum. the colors as they show here aren't the way they're supposed to look. I expect to get that fixed eventually. gifttransformtest_h264.mov

Hello friends I felt like doing some experimenting the other day. I had a photo of New York taken from the Empire State building The photo is taken by a friend and colleague of me, Johanna Vaart So, I wanted to see if I was able to convert the photo to an anaglyph using A:M. First I used PFHoe, to "track" the photo, by doing so I got the camera position and angle, then I started to create simple proxymodels and placed them accordingly with the photo. When done I made a depthmap using fog. In PhotoShop I used the depthmap as a displacementmap to skew the red channel to the left and green and blue channel to the right. I also made a "tilt-shift miniature" vers…

Well, I've tried following David Rogers' tutorial in his book. Here's what I have so far. I'm not necessarily going for 100% anatomically correct, but I would like that muscular/superhero style look. Please, crits are welcome as I'm not very good at the organic side of modeling Fortunately, about a year ago I did this fairly intensive study of the muscular male body for some superhero drawings I was doing, so I have a fair idea of the proportions on paper, translating to 3D is a bit trickier for me

Even though my previous thread for this model is gone, the model itself still progresses. I've added all the male actors and tweaked the light levels. The only thing that's left is charcoal suited guy's red-headed companion. For the sake of finishing and moving on, I may just have her off-camera while leaving behind some props to imply she'll soon return.

I created a leaf emitter model with growth and color sliders. Heres how to use it. Open leaf emitter model and import your tree. Create a group for your leaves. Drag the hair material shortcut from the leaf emitter group to your leaf group. Delete leaf emitter group and name. Rename your leaf group leaf emitter (very important). Add a leaf image to hair material. Open pose slider. Drag the model into choreography in shaded mode (color does show in wireframe mode). Move sliders to see the change. Windows v11.0. If your having problems let me know. Works very well with Marcel's treeez plug-in. Just drag onto level0 group and rename. Enjoy.

Hello to all - I have been working on my first short short film for a couple months now and finally decided to consolidate my posting regarding it in this thread. Operation:Sphinx is code for my yet unnamed toon. It follows the story of a creature as it lands on a planet unknown to it, and we witness a surprising discovery. This is the "Nice Tan" glam pic for eggprops. It includes the Yves Poissant skin shader that gives it that nice "warm" look. It does have a significant hit on render times. . . and the material works ok without it but with it. . . oooo wee. . . sexy huh!?! You can see it on eggprops <here> And then we have. . . a Zombie material. Very clean elegant material. Make sure to shoot them in the head. . . its the only way to kill them. . . . It can be found <here> And then the last one is a cool Reptile material. And that can be found <here>

From- Dark Skull Productions including John Hubickey and Rich Jackson: Greetings all, An episodic space opera/ action adventure movie will be coming soon, called TekNu. The project should end up being around 20 episodes. So far, there is a web site with WIP videos, the story and episode descriptions, also the site includes details about the characters that will be seen. The web site is still under construction so some areas are not complete. We should be in a more complete state after the holidays. Late in January, work will continue and we might have the first episode by the end of the month. Here is the URL for the web site: DarkSkullProductions.com …

Just thought I would post some shots of how my new model project is coming along. I have been asked to do some shots for a Star Wars Fan film (for free of course). 5 shots each revolving around a babies head - so I need a babies head model (very specific since they already have shots of the baby I need to duplicate the real one......) and it needs to be rigged for basic baby facial work. Unfortunately I have only a front roto to work from so I have to 'wing it' somewhat. So I will welcome comment/recommendations about how it's working out as I progress.
