Hey everyone, I have about 6 weeks left in my first year at the Cleveland Institute of Art and have recently started using Animation Master pretty heavily again. I'd like to share some of my projects. My first project using was re-purposing or increasing the aesthetic qualities of some object for my 3D design course. I used AM for previsualization (helping me better understand aesthetic and ergonomic variations) and then crafted the final object with wood. My next project was to make a game of some sort. I choose to make a board game. Again AM was used to previsualize the game and settle on a final aesthetic theme before sending the obj…

Here is one of a bunch of characters that my uncle had for some kids stories so I thought I would give 3d Coat a whirl for the rough model design. I manually retopo'd the model and exported an obj, brought that into am and with a little cleanup got this. Some small tweaks but already have it rigged. Where I needed hooks I made simple triangles so they were easy to spot.

Hey all, I've made a detour and am working on Captain Kirk for no good reason at all. Now I've started (was using a trackpad which isn't good for modeling BTW) but my main problem is lacking of good side and front views and ones with a higher resolution than 100 pixels. So if anyone knows of any, please direct me to them

I'm in the process of assembling models for my first solo music video. At the start of the song I need a barmaid and decided to use "Gala" from the Extra's DVD. The model has extensive attention to detail, but when I render from the backside there is a "strip" anomaly in the decal somehow. Perhaps it was intended that way, but to me it is quite distracting. I could use another model. I could replace the decals on the dress. There are a number of workarounds I could employ, but then I would not know what was happening, or why it was happening, and as always, the goal is to understand more completely this wonderful software. I know there are a number of "get-to-th…

So with all these discussions of group projects and the like, it really has put the bug in me to do a web series of some sort. Before that however, there needs to be an idea and some designing. Now in short, right now I'm sorta just designing a character and seeing if more blossoms from it. Essentially what I'm trying to do, is re-design an old character of mine, Captain Heroic. This time, I'm really trying to go for a simplistic, stylized, adventure hero type look. So with that said, I'm kind of stumped This is just a quick sketch I threw together and hopefully it can be a launchpad for ideas. It would be very helpful and nice if some of you creative folk here co…

Hi all! I always was wondering if objects can be set to cast reflections ONLY (and not be visible to the camera in renderings). Is that possible somehow? I'm talking about a sphere around the scene that I want to just cause reflections but keep the renderings alpha channel "clean"... Greetz, Elm.

I made this panorama and used it as Rotoscope moved Rotoscope (right to left at 00:00:00 to 00:08:00) put model moved on the path (left to right) set camera keyframes to get good perspective (at 00:00:00/00:04:00/00:08:00) created small ground and constraint > Transtate To model set Option : Front Projection Target ON / Receive Shadow ON (for shadow) and Render to Files. I'm over my head in a big project that is going to generate an enormous number of files and I want to establish some order before I get buried. I'm curious as to how everyone else organizes their files. What kind of naming scheme do you use? How do you handle the different types of assets (models, actions, audio files, decals, materials, etc.)?

Hi! I've never used shadows only but now it can really help me! So, I researched it, did what I thought I needed to do but I'm not getting it to work. Settings Tried: Render to TGA and then to .mov Buffers: Alpha=on and tried off Shadows on Render Options: Quality Final Shadows on then tried off Everything else off Nothing in Alpha buffer or RGB channels I opened the TGA in PhotoShop CS3 and the .mov in After Effects 6.5. I'm using AM V14c Am I missing something? Thanks, Rusty

I raised this last time I used AM and got nowhere. The 3DConnexion *standard* axis for Spin and Roll are swapped in AM. Last time I raised this (years ago) I was told this was what certain AM users wanted and it wouldn't change. Would a request to add a user option to use the 3DConnexion *default* axis be considered? Cheers

Hey everyone, Started a new personal project. A while back I did an illustration of a creature (which can be found here http://i.imgur.com/KS5Ki4l.jpg) and I decided it would be cool to make a near photo realistic version in Animation Master. Still have a long way to go, but here is my start after a few hours. Texturing has always been my weak point (at least on organic things) so it should be a good process. Anyway let me know what you think! Ben

I did some more work with Instant Meshes program. It appears the -align to boundaries- button helps to get the output quads where you want them. This is especially helpful when you want to -copy/flip/attach- later in A:M. Attached are two pictures and a short .MOV that I made with an imported .OBJ of a spaceman. I can see that the models are not pretty, but because they are small and smooth, you can get useful results. The whole process of importing an .OBJ into Instant Meshes, outputting the reconfigured .OBJ and importing it into A:M only takes a minute or two. The pictures show the original .OBJ on the left and the Instant Meshes version on the right. …

Hey folks, I've been working on a superhero character called the Mongoose. I'm working on the eyes and would love to have your opinion on which eyes would work the best. The character is supposed to be a dark character, but a good guy - kind of like Batman. The one thing that I'm trying to avoid is the "Spiderman look" (like the image number 2). Anyway, I would love to here which one is your favorite. All the best, Nima Anvar

I was going to wait until she was more complete before I showed her to the crowds, but I'm itching for some input - and she's just so darned cute!! I wanted to do a child for my first head model since their contours are so much rounder and simpler than adults. Now I've got the basic shape, but I find I'm at a loss about how to approach the eyelids and especially the ears. Any suggestions would be most helpful. The model (human) is about 11 years old. Do you think I captured her youthfulness? The decal is from a photo of her, but not the same one I used for the rotoscope. OK, criticize (and suggest) away. B-

I'm modeling some new characters for a story. Here I modeled a character's head after a frontal picture as a rotoscope, then what I did was to apply the decal in the same position as the rotoscope! I'm pleased with the results of this technique. Even though I will have to remake the textures later, I can use this rough picture as a base. One of the problems is that the texture has some 'built in ilumination', because the original foto has a lighting on its own. Even so, I think that little 'cheat' doesn't interfere much with scene lighting yet can improve realism. I tried giving the object an opposite lighting here (from below). …

I've been following Victor Navone's development of his facial rig closely, and using a similar system have been able to rig my latest character much more efficietly than in the past. I've completed a small test (no laughing ..... after Victors effort I'm almost embarressed to post it...) with some detail on the bone structure on my webpage. Click here to go to my webpage, then click on the 'The Cuckoo, Animation' link. I'd be interested in peoples thoughts.. Cheers

I've recently banged out a parody of BigIdea's popular Christian-themed VeggieTales videos, for a local sketch comedy show. I'm a little hesitant to post the link, however, for fear of offending other users. Psychologically, it's very wrong, though there's certainly nothing graphic about it. It deals with the recent church sex scandles here in Boston. Thoughts? Regards- -M@

Hi all! I'm currently working on this landscape illustration for a book cover. There are a couple of problems I'm encountering. First of all, I'm using a hair material for the leaves on the trees, but when I render it out, A:M simply crashes. I think the problem is that I don't have enough system resources. I'm running v11c on a 2.4 Pentium 4 with 512mb of RAM. Anyway, there's still a lot of texture work to be done, and details to be added. The biggest challenge for me thus far, is the leaves for the trees. I must say, I'm struggling with this. The water texture is also another challenge that I must tackle pretty soon. Please let me know what you guys think…

Hello there, for those of you that have been following this in the main forum, here it is: there are some creasing problems around the legs, I tried to keep it to 4 pt patches but in a few spots I just couldn't do it. On a positive note, the creasing doesn't seem to be as visible in the final render.

Here's the latest guy I've been modeling off and on for the past month or so... I'm planning to have him fight another ninja (a duplicate- just orange or blue or something) in a big room. Any suggestions? I'm still not completely decided on the music, or how it's all going to work out, but I want to have all the animation done by the end of August. But if anyone has any ideas for anything at all, they'd be much appreciated. thanks in advance! -Andrew

Hi all, I've been continuing my tests with compositing shaded hair and final renders directly in AM - no alpha channels or fancy software needed. Here's the result of my latest process, the TOTAL render time for this 1024*768 image, was 6:30 on my 1.4 gig machine. That's 6 minutes, not hours. This is frame 44 of the test animation which uses dynamics for the hair. I'll post a link to the final VGA animation later. EDIT - Link to VGA dynamic hair video 1.03 megs Quicktime UPDATED to high density hair. Link to full size version of still Phil

Hi. I decided to give greenscreening a try. I started off with dying a sheet green, which sort of worked, but ended up buying a peice of cycloth. This was filmed in my livingroom with my 2 kids. The whole procces was challenging and at times frustrating, but in the end I learned a ton and had fun. The quality is poor because I have a miny DV camera, my editing software is crude at keying, my animation is "developing", I had to compress the crap out of it to get it to 11 mb, wah, wah, wah. This is just the beginning. I am getting Final Cut Pro which will help with the keying, and I'm starting to understand how action blending works, I think. When I get FCP I want to redo …

I'm working on my image for the X-mas contest. And I'm running into problem. If you note the image below, there are certain parts of the candles where the translucency is not working properly (It's visible in the reflection on the table, too). I've tried changing materials, checking normals, altering the light source creating the translucency, but everything I try gives me the same results. Suggestions, work-arounds, comments. I can make a larger render if necessary.

HOORAH! I'VE ALMOST FINISHED MY FIRST EVER CHARACTER CREATED COMPLETELY BY ME! Surprising considering how long I've been modeling, eh? I never really tried to model any characters because I was scared. Now I am not! Tell me what you think, but try not to ruin my good mood too badly. He's a bank robber for a short my friend wanted me to make. NOTE: It's kind of hard to see the bump map on his hood, (that has the lines like in a ski mask) but they're there and will be visible in close-ups (i hope).
