I did some more work with Instant Meshes program. It appears the -align to boundaries- button helps to get the output quads where you want them. This is especially helpful when you want to -copy/flip/attach- later in A:M. Attached are two pictures and a short .MOV that I made with an imported .OBJ of a spaceman. I can see that the models are not pretty, but because they are small and smooth, you can get useful results. The whole process of importing an .OBJ into Instant Meshes, outputting the reconfigured .OBJ and importing it into A:M only takes a minute or two. The pictures show the original .OBJ on the left and the Instant Meshes version on the right. …

I've read several post in which people were noticing that the emitters were not totally transparent when a scene was rendered. Well Nancy shared a little trick with me in one of my posts that I thought was good enough to share with everyone. Many of you may know this already, but some may not. If you want to make an emitter disappear, here's the trick: Make a small TGA image with a transparent background and an alpha channel for the whole image. When rendered in AM you should see nothing. OK, I'm trying to get to grips with the patch modelling. Once I start laying down the CP's, it's like a juggling act to get four-point patches without destroying the ones already there. Could someone pleeze tell me if I am going about this the right way, or if I need to scrub this and start again. When I see other people's works (just seen Ken H's start of a face model), they seem so neat compared to mine. Thanks for taking a look... Adam

I have been pretty quiet recently because I've been working hard on virtual me. I wanted to experiment with puppeting a realistic character, and I figured I was the best reference available. The model is not quite as elegantly splined as some of the other self portraits that have been posted recently, but my focus was on movement. So here's a first test at virtual me. There are still some tweaks to be made in both the motion and the model, but this is a promising start. Sorry it's so short, but I had to fit in the 2mb limit take20.mov

After over a four year departure I have finally got around to revisiting my 'Bella Bear' project which some of you here might remember :-) I have taken one of my favourite shots from the short Bella Bear film I made back then and started to rework it following my spell at Animation Mentor and having worked on a few small film projects. Hi all I need some help on how to separate a photo into 2 parts and then, how to use the 2 new images with AM to create the effect of a model in the original photo. photo 1 An example would be of Victor Navone and his model in front of his computer. photo2 I have worked with Photoshop for several years but never messed with masks or alpha channels so does anyone know where I can find a simple tut. on how to separate the fence? Then to create a project in AM with 2 layers and my model?

If by chance you have an installer for one of those around and can run it... Select a light and hit N for the translate manipulator. Does the Translate manipulator appear correctly? A box with red, green and blue handles on each side and corner, like for any other bone or the camera. and if so, can you screen capture it?

ddustin and I are collaborating on a project, not so much working together, but helping each other out with tips and techiques, and thought we'd post a message here to get some feedback (suggestions , tips, and/or techniques) as how to proceed. I've always liked the squash and stretch look of the Veggie Tales character's eyes and wondered how to do it in A:M. There were several posts on this forum showing how it was done with distortion boxes so I gave it a try. Very cool... then it made me wonder if the same technique on a generic round character head would make it easy to generate a bunch of unique characters very quickly without having to do any rerigging or remodeling (other than a new distortion box). Hey Guys, I've been trying to upload this TV spot off and on this past year at Hash Films and have been unsuccessful. I just thought I would share it here... Here's the info on this spot and a link to the movie. This commercial has won many awards and is also being repackaged as part of the new Keep America Beautiful campaign for next year. The Talking Pen says I Love You and being a pen it has already drawn a hearth! I believe it is possible to make stories fast with this character. And using two pens - you can have a dialogue - making a plot by setting up a problem and giving some solution to it. Just that easy! Hi Guys, I would like to share something that I have currently in the works. The head is complete, but I am still working on the body. The Greaseman is based on a real Disc- Jocky from DCRadio700. http://www.greaseman.org I've been listening to him for years and he's really funny. I wanted to take a break from the tutorials and put some of what I have learned into practice. So far, I have modified Schlitzy by getting rid of most of the hair. Built a room, still need to put trim around the window. Added a layer behind the window for the moonlit background. Added a decal to the floor to simulate hardwood, and added some reflection to it. Penguins have always been a favorite animal of mine. Perhaps it because they look like they are dressed in formal wear, or maybe it is just that they are physically unable to steal my french fries (unlike one of my least favorite animals: seagulls). Either way, the other day I drew some penguins for a comic (here if you're interested) which got me thinking about penguins once again. This came to me on Wednesday, I 'boarded it on Thursday, modeled it on Friday, animated Saturday, and finished it tonight. (All in between full-time work and college.) I intend to include it as part o' my Halloween card to fiends and family via e-mail. (Hooray for Hash!) Have I mentioned I adore this software? Here's what I have so far for the January 11 second club. Its a bit more challenging this month with three characters and their voices overlapping. The scenario is : A lady walking out of the pet store with a couple of Dodo birds she just purchased and they are all very happy. The lady will be clapping something in her hands during the clapping part but haven't thought of anything fitting yet. dodotest4.mov BTW those Dodo birds are cool models and they are on the extras DVD.

I've started on a new model last night. Unfortunatly, I don't have internet access at home, just work so I don't have any images.......yet. My question regards hair (see Topic Title) I've avoided modeling hair forever, simply because I suck at it....of course if I had taken the time to try it and practice it I wouldn't suck at it. Anyway, I'm starting to play around with it and the question is should I use helmet hair...or wait until my copy of AM v12 or 13, which ever the latest is, comes in to use the new hair system (should only be a couple more days). Are people really paying $50 for a tank of gas????? I made 2 clip with flame and without flame then played with the transparency control in the animation. I thought about what I could do as a first project, and thought it would be good to make a movie of Jabberwocky - not too long, and I've always been a fan. Then as I went through TaoA:M I thought, maybe just a verse. As I finished TaoA:M, I thought, just a couple of words. So - "BEWARE THE JABBERWOCK!" He's supposed to be from Tenniel's Jabberwock illustration, and, yes, those are socks: He's only got a basic modified 2001 rig, but as he doesn't appear much in the poem, he doesn't need any more. My next move is to try and bake a Darktree onto his skin and change it in 3d Painter.

This is the first time I've animated to sound. It took about 20 hours and I think it turned out pretty OK. It's for the next "10 Second Club" animation contest at the end of the month, so if you have any crits I'll get them fixed before then. Heres something I put together in a few hours, the eye model is the Uber Eye from cfree68f, thanks so much again! I made a new Iris and added a color and bump map to the white of the eye and played around with the reflection and spec. settings. CC is always welcome, hope you like it..

Here's a look at a model I'm working on. The original sketches in the corner were done by my wife, she has a wonderful drawing style (I think, anyway), that's almost anime, but not quite. The head is coming along nicely, I think, but the areas on the body that concern me are the shoulder area next to the breast (I've highlighted it in red) where there are 4 five point patches in a row. Is this going to be a problem when the shoulder moves? and if so, what can I do to fix it? Also, is the butt going to cause me problems as is? Will I be able to fix them with some smartskinning? And how does it look so far to you? Thanks, Lazlo
