The sun probably needs more rays cast to further diffuse the shadows from window muntons and I think there should more light coming from the street through the upper entrance but it's getting there.

Steve got me thinking about approaches to tree bark and this was the result of applying a displacement map to a 9 patch grid. For bark I note that in addition to the texture, lighting has a great deal to do with emphasizing that bark's detail and hardness.

Here's a random doodle... I guess you could call it a test of mouth shapes. What I find interesting about stuff like this is how emotion can be conveyed with no other change other than the jaw/mouth. Adding some eye and eyebrow animation would yield even more interesting results and of course yield that wonderfully expressive emotion 'anger'. randommouthshapes_sm.mov

Hey, I'm taking random objects and and modeling them in A:M...ya know why? because Its summer and I have nothin better to do . (plus its fun) I just made a soap dispenser, but I cant make the right brass/gold color so I just kept it uncolored except for the bottom. I think I'm gonna end up making a still with the things I'm making too. I'm also making a new character, but I wanna finish it's hands and head before I show it. I have never uploaded a pic to this forum so i dont know if itll work, if it does then awesome if doesnt....then I'll try it again

OK! This will be a model of my Ranger in GW. But that's pretty far off. I've made a body mock-up and now I'm working on the head. Here's where I'm at: [attachmentid=23207] Lookin' kinda freaky. [attachmentid=23208] I've gotten this far with the help of the great 'Cooper' Tutorial. My questions: - Am I using too many 5 point patches? - How to fix those creases on the side? - Does he need more CPs? - Should I put this on hold until I get my version 13 upgrade? (Just in time for Christmas. ) Suggest away! Now that I've made this thread, I should be more motivated to work on him! Updates will happen!

Take a look. Except for some minor tweaking I believe I am done. <1000 patches and will withstand close and long shots. Critiques please. This is done directly off a photo. I rotoscope the base but had to freehand the bulk of the hand gaurd. Thanks Wade

Here is the last of the Dinosaurs that we had/have on eggprops. So now we have a complete set. Again this one was done by Brian and Joe and now (after I re-worked a lot of the rigging and tail geometry) works perfectly in the latest versions of A:M. And here it is! Enjoy.

I was trying to show as speed increased there was faster tire rotation so I made the rotation in an action and gave it stride length then constrained the tire to a path. the first second I set the ease at 15% so the tire would rotate slow as it moved then at the end of the 3rd second I had ease 100% so it would race to the end.I added some streaks to help show the movement as well as a marking on the tire. Now I ask does this look right? rate.mov rate.zip I was doing this because of a question I received about expressions and I thought this would be easier Its a little rough but I am half asleep Johnl3d tink

I'm trying to put together a portfolio and I want to thank you guys for all your help and crits. I think I'm almost there. This is really an extended topic from the KeeKat's Secret and Lypsyching the cowboy where I asked the question on lipsyching methods. This is using the "manual" method; which at this point I KNOW gets the best results. Raven.mov This is the "long" one I was referring to to. Didn't take as long as i thought it would. On this one though, I don't think its as good as the Cowboy. I believe it comes from the poses which was mentioned in one of the other topics(go figure). The cowboy's poses were done by a master, and Raven's done …

I've needed to put a new roof on this house for years I need to rip off the old roof first and I need to be able to cover the house while I do that. The largest tarp Home Depot sells is not large enough to cover the whole roof at once so I'm using A:M and Simcloth to test out various placements and to see where likely places to tie it down will be. this is a somewhat accurate, full size approximation of my roof and a 60' x 40' tarp:

Hey Spliners! Been awhile since I did any 'show-n-tell'...I've been busy, and A:M V15.0E is at the CORE of my operations. Here are two recent jobs, one for Healthy Balance fruit juice and the other for HoMedics new water filter-er. I'm having good results with Yves new ENVIRONMENT SHADER, but I still tend to render with reflections ON anyway. Both of these animations were needed in HD (720P) and average render times were around 4 minutes per frame, totally acceptible for an overnight render. The juice bottle is actually an engineering file imported to A:M as a .OBJ prop, and given dummy attributes right in the choreography(color, transparency, reflectivity, specular, refr…

d78c5e599c2a9c9d0bbd Man, I think I am guilty of NOT using AMFilms the way I should be... I just gave it another look, and it is pretty sweet. This is a test to see if the video shows here in the forum. Any A:M users in the Detroit/Lower Michigan area who are sports fans (Red Wings, Tigers, Pistons) have seen this spot to DEATH... it airs SO frequently. This is MY version of it... before the editors and sound effects guys did their work on it. I had 3 days to do this :30... a :15 and :10 versions as well. I was not present on the shoot, and the little girl did a wonderful job of 'dictating' where the Tireman character should be. There was lots of challenges with i…

I'm building my living room (well my house really) in AM. I want to see what it would be like to install recessed lights in my living room. The ceiling is just a grid. I can build the cans, but they have depth. I want to place them in the ceiling and have the depth, but the grid cuts through the light. Do I have to make an open grid for each place I want to put a light? **I started to make an example, but AM kept crashing. I'm on a mac... is vs 16 out of bata yet?

This isn't animation but it is related to the WIP of our project and I just thought some people might be interested. I recorded most of the voices in our studio at work a few weeks back. However, I had Ian Fairbairn in mind to record a couple of voices. I decided to travel to his home in London and record there. Not ideal but it worked out fine and the quality sounds on par with the studio recorded stuff to me. Ian was in several episodes of 'Dr. Who' and 'Timeslip' in the 70's and also 'The Avengers' and other similar British series. [attachmentid=15573] [attachmentid=15574]

Very old Greek pottery in the late 7th and 6th centuries B.C.E practiced something called "black figure", where they painted imagery with black glaze or "slip" on the red clay. A couple centuries later they reversed that to do "red figure" where they used the black to cover the negative space around the image they were making. After seeing examples of this work at a museum I wanted to try to recreate some of that look, including the numerous fractures they tended to have after being buried in a dump for 2000+ years. Thom is a cylinder wrapped decal. The break lines are a combiner material.

I was a bit surprised that my assembly line graphic didn't generate much interest at work, but undaunted, I'm trying again. :-) There's a mascot for one our client's that gets used fairly often. Often enough, I thought, that it would be worth making him over in 3D. It's a rooster character and I've had trouble getting his beak right from different angles. To sell them on it, I said I'd just do the head first and see if the client liked the idea. This way, even if they didn't, I'd have a 3D model of the head that I could use as reference for different angles. Here's what I came up with: And here's a little turnaround of it: roosterturn.mov No…

I was browsing through some photos the other day, when I realized I was missing something from my attempts to make realistic eyes in A:M -- the annoying red pupil effect you get when the light source is lined up almost directly with the camera lens. A lot of effort goes into reducing red-eye in the real world (from Sharpie markers to strobing flashes to software), but just like lens flares, it's an artifact that doesn't occur in CG unless you deliberately make it happen. So here's a little test animation of what I came up with: EyeballTest.mpg (208 KB). The basic technique's pretty easy; just a partial sphere inside the eyeball with a black surface and a la…

I dug up an old shot from a project that eventually moved production overseas. It was only half finished but I liked where it was going (though the director disagreed). Anyway, I wanted to take it to completion. It'll give me a chance to get up to speed on the post 8.5 interface since the last big production I worked on (Day Off the Dead) was all 8.5. I figure I'll document the improvements as I go here. Any and all suggestions, no matter how brutal are welcome. Here's where it was left in Dec. 1999: shot40c (1.81MB QuickTime)

Hi all! I always was wondering if objects can be set to cast reflections ONLY (and not be visible to the camera in renderings). Is that possible somehow? I'm talking about a sphere around the scene that I want to just cause reflections but keep the renderings alpha channel "clean"... Greetz, Elm.

This is purely for entertainment value if there is any. It's around 4mb and wmv format. I did this around two years ago using a couple of donated models from the cd and a few of my own. It was really my first little story animation. You'll notice changing shirt colors, breaking mesh, and flickering probably among other things so I'm not really looking for critiques. Just if you're bored on a Sunday afternoon. The Pizza experience

This is an outgrowth of an idea I originally floated in this post on the SDK forum. My objective is to create a sphere of randomly distributed stars 10 km in radius, where each star is a one-patch object with a diameter randomly ranging from 7.5 to 30 m. I also want to be able to control the size of all stars simultaneously with a pose slider, to ensure that the stars will always be rendered at about one pixel regardless of the resolution of the render or the focal length of the camera. After Yves put me on the track of a bones-based solution, I first tried to implement this idea in which each star has two bones, one to position it randomly and one to scale it, but…

As I was programming the new A:M Action export function for Zign Track, I needed to do a good test myself. I choose a song from one of the best Dutch bands and play backed it. OK, it turned out I'm not very good at this because I forgot my lines a few times, for the rest it was pretty good. I exported the Action with only poses for the facial expressions. I have used Squetchy Sam for this example. I added a some poses to Sam so it matched the poses in Zign Track and applied the action. I needed one little tweak on the lower lip so the mouth closed better, that is because of the neutral frame I selected in the video. Besides that I haven't done any tweaking at all, and i…
