Well, I finally decided to finish this image. I didn't have any time so I made a simple background. Everything was made, rendered, and composited (A:M Composite) in A:M. Except for the blue gradient background, text, and some very minor paint fixes on parts of the constume webbing. I don't really know how to use Composite very well, but I'm fairly happy with my results. Bloom to the spec layer. Another Bloom to the rest. Tinted my ambient gradient. And some other stuff. I probably could have spent a little more time on the pose, but I decided enough was enough and just wanted to get it finished. I also posted this in the Showcase forum, here:…

"Stolen Smells" is a children's book that was commissioned to be adapted into an A:M-animated short by the Anzovins. Using the same style of flat lighting as The Duel, it looks like they've managed to match the 2D look of the original book very closely, though the characters are fully animated models. Anyway, I've been looking forward to seeing this since I first read about it--it's always nice to see the different styles that A:M can be used for.

Introduction: I’m remaking an old Christmas video called “Twas the Night Before Christmas” that I did three years ago. As I completed scenes, I thought I would blog them here for general discussion of animated short making and have everyone critique what I am doing. I originally did this piece as a video Christmas card however in my ignorance of delivering video, most of the people I sent it to didn’t have the bandwidth or a powerful enough computer to view it. This year I will make it into a DVD and hope for a wider audience. I started about the first of July and am shooting for completion by December 19th. While I would love a lot more time, I am going to mak…

Recently i have gotten the oppurtunity to do some more work for NASA ( no pay but it will look good on my resume). At the NASA Glenn research center several groups are working on designs for the modules to go back to the moon, one of the groups needs some modeling and animation done, and asked if i was up for it. Of course i accepted. Below is what i have done so far. I am going to have to make a few bump maps and diffuse maps for the lander, but it is pretty much done. Comments welcome, Ben. PS the legs are fully articulate, so are the radiator panels (the random black panels).

Hi. I have noticed some strangeness in hair from time to time and the attached file is an example of a current problem. Dynamics and collision detection are turned off yet I am getting this distortion occuring, as if collision detection were activated. Any ideas? This model still requires alot of work on the geometry and rig but I have a problem that someone may be able to shed some light on. For some reason the head bone refuses to work in an action or choreography. I have tried creating a pose slider to get around this but that refuses to work too. Any ideas what could be preventing me from rotating the head bone? Thanks for any ideas! [attachmentid…

Ok.... Those of you that were following the other thread, I thought I would post the results of all my spline tweaking. after I had fixed the arm, I had noticed that the leg was jacked up too, so I fixed that. There's still a *tiny* glitch at the back of the leg, but the clay shader mostly hides it. I have attached a couple screenshots, I think you will agree that it looks much much better. A couple of weeks ago, during the June-deal offer, I managed to upgrade my version of A:M from 10.5 to 13.0. And what a leap that was! While I still had the earlier version, I tried to make do with what I could - but one major setback was the uselessness of the hair feature. Now, somewhere in the advancement, I have since gained those new hair and grooming features that allow me so much more control over my hair and fur, to say nothing of the brilliant render quality! The attached image shows the progression of my personal alter-ego character, Danbuster Cameronean Leadboot - shown in the last rendered frame of my avatar animation, striking his silly pose. …

In the first clip called water.mov, you'll notice black speckles on the trees. I've narrowed this down to doing a final render with at least 4 passes and with "soften" on and of course having hair with targa files and a alpha channel. Most likely I could render this with A-buffer rendering without black speckles, but then the precedural bump on the water doesn't show. That would mean no water flow. The second clip has two segments. On the first segment, you'll see rippling in the water. That was done with an animated decal and setting the first and last frame in the choreography. Unfortunately, after saving the project and opening it back up again, the key fram…

I have been asked to post a request for a dog model. We are in the final editing stage of our children's video, and how it happened I don't know, but we have overlooked the animated dog. Anyway the director asked me about modeling the dog and I can but I am animated the last sequence and they want the dog ready asap. Soooo, is there any one that has model a dog, preferably a lab, but any dog can be used. (and they are willing to pay) Steve

I thought I would post this in both the showcase and the compositing forum. I've been working on some effects shots for a short film (56 minutes) Using animation master to animate smoke and shell casings. Though certainly my implementation could probably be improved on it doesn't look bad compared to the relatively dead and inactive look of the shots without any compositing. The vietnam sequence consists of a about a 60 second firefight. -Ethan [attachmentid=18455]

I finished this character up last night. He's not rigged yet but for those interested he's using the new hair particle system. There are no decals here, only material combinations. He weighs in at around 1200 patches. He rendered in about 2 and a half minutes, resolution 640x400, multi-pass x 16. Okay Martin...there you go...like I promised. Comments are welcomed and encouraged. I appreciate any feed-back I can get. (Especially around the shoulder area.)

TWO is progressing well - so well in fact that we're moving into modeling for Act II, (there's still plenty of animation to be done in Act I but the modelers need to stay way ahead of the animators). Alain Desrochers, TWO Set Manager, will be looking for modelers for "Mrs. Yoop's Castle" (which Alain designed). This is the best set in the movie, with lots of gothic and macabre details, and plenty of opportunity to be creative without having to be a perfect modeler. So, all of you car modelers please raise your hand by responding to this thread. You don't have to commit to a lot - just bite off a piece here and there: plenty of statues, ornamentation, hallways, and…

Hey everyone...long time no pictures. I've been working on a new Superman model and it's far enough along to start sharing. This model started life as Jim Talbot's Superman model from the "Kingdom Come" series that he gave away years ago to the 3D comic collective website. Jim did such an awesome job I decided to use his model as a base for a "regular" version of the character. I still have LOTS of work to do, but I'm liking the progress so far. So, Jim, thanks for making such a cool model, I hope you don't mind my "Hashtic Surgery". Jim's is on the left, mine is on the right. Rendered AO in v13. BIG version of PJC SUPES Comments…

And what can you do to avoid it? I've noticed that in a lot of models that I build, I am getting these problems and I am not sure what I could be doing better to avoid it. I don't think I am doing anything strange as I am building these models, but maybe there is something that I am doing that I am not realizing. Seems to me like I'd have to do a screen capture of one of my work sessions for anyone to be able to tell where I am screwing up. I am probably going to try and do the giraffe tutorial, maybe that will shed some light, however----I was making good progress and would possibly like to have a finished dragon model at the end of the day. help........ …

Started a new WIP post with a more appropriate heading. Picked this old model up and started tweaking again. Here are some quick renders with some color experiments - none of which I like. Also worked some more on the interior - dash, gauges, seats, door panels, center console and stick. The body is undergoing tweaking every time I touch the project. The metal is getting smoother every time. I also reworked the rims of the car, loosing over 500 cps without changing the look of the rims. This was done just by getting more experience in modeling and eliminating what was not necessary. I've started working on the engine compartment and will post a r…

Heya all, Long story short: my powerbook (G4 1.33GHz, 1.25 gig of ram, GeForce 5200 64 meg of video ram) died last month and I cobbled together a PC out of parts while waiting for Apple to figure out how to fix it. The PC: - GeForce 2 GTS (32 meg of video ram, AGP 1 or 2, I'm not sure) - 512 Meg of ram - 1.1 GHz athalon A friend of mine urged me to dust off my 2005 disc and try AM again on the PC, just to see, and wow! Despite being a shadow of my Mac laptop, AM *screamed* on this PC. (The funny part is that it sat caseless on my desk for a while as well, cables snaking out from the motherboard.) It's two months later and after two small modeling proje…

Ok, I seem to have munged up the cp's by the base of the arm/ armpit a bit, but other than that things look ok. I'm pretty happy with the way that I managed to get the hand attached. I think it turned out best. All I have left to attach is the foot and the head, and now that I think I have the hang of things I may change the head slightly. [attachmentid=18354]

Ok, I did a pretty good job of attaching the hand, I need to attach the arm now and so I have to make a hole for it. This is my least favorite part as I have a good chance of screwing up the geometry I already have. I have taken 2 screenshots, one for reference of the way the arm is now, and another with blue lines and dots where I think the new splines and cp's should go. Do you think I am pretty much right on the money, or would you do it differenty? Roger[attachmentid=18351][attachmentid=18352]

Hello I seem to have screwed something up.......I started working on the giraffe tutorial, since I thought that might be beneficial since I still have some problems with modelling. I wanted to change the units for the grid, so I could follow along properly, from cm to ft. However, after I did that, the grid disappeared even though I have "display grid" checked. I had changed the grid spacing from .16cm to 1foot, I wouldn't have thought that would have made it disappear. I probably did something wrong, what I want to know is is there anyway to get the default settings back? Roger

Hello, I'm getting to the point where I am finalizing the construction of this dragon model, and I have to attach a hand, where the hand has 12 pts at its beginning, and the stump of the wrist has 8, I believe. This has always been the most difficult part for me....I generally try to model parts separately, and then attach them later, as that has always been the way that has worked best for me in the past. However, due to AM being different from polygon modellers, it doesn't seem to make sense to do that anymore. When I am trying to join to parts with disparate numbers of points, the simple solution is to make sure that each end has the same number…

Well, it's been a while since I had any chance to do any modeling, so I thought the best way was to model something I'm really interested in...The Honda Rune. So far I have the back fender, front fender, and gas tank (thanks to help on the main forum). Got a ways to go, but it's coming along. I am basing this off of some press photos (top and side views, but they don't quite match...), as well as a little scale model I have. Someday soon I'll be able to fork out the $25k or so to buy a real one. In the meantime I've been developing hardbags for the Rune, which will be available in less than a month (if you have a Rune...or VTX 1800). Comments are welcome. …

OK Well, he's not exactly cute or endearing yet, I think the pupils are too tiny..... And I still have a few things to add. I think I will just give him paddle feet, or modify the hands and make feet out of those. I've made horns, I just didn't bother to put them on. I'll be putting some decals on him at some point, nothing too fancy just something to punch him up a bit. He'll still be clay shaded. One thing I am not entirely happy with is the snout....this one is true to my original sketches, I didn't want to have a beak or anything with teeth, like an alligator or t-rex. I guess I could give him like a little anteater mouth with a tou…

Martin and gang---- I am not sure how difficult this would be to implement, but it would be kind of nice if there were a way to bookmark different entries within the help system, so that you can go back to them quickly. I am not a full-time user of AM, and if I don't do something a bunch of times I find myself having to go back to the help index or pester people on the board to find something. It would be nice to be able to personalize the help file, in order to keep entries on things that stump you handy. Just something I would find useful. If there is already a way to do this I'd love to know how. Thanks Roger

During the creation of this beast, I did something that I do with other 3d programs.....I split the thing into separate projects, so each body part ( mostly) has a separate project file. Its just easier for me to work this way. However, I have come to the point where I want to start bringing these parts into the same project file, but I cannot seem to find a way to save the model out as a .mdl file from within the project----although there seems to be an option to import them from the File menu. So, if someone could give me the Saving and Importing .mdl files for Dummies version, I will post a picture of my dragon as he exists so far. I am sure its some…

Trying something I usually don't do and that is modeling. I am posting a wireframe and shaded wireframe to help with my questions. This model will be animated and I was wondering if the normal rigs will work when there are no hand or mainly feet. And any potential trouble with the model ..I noticed that the arms could use another ring or two of splines....There will be no mouth only implied by the bouncing of the nose. And I have to add a tail. The skirt will be cloth. [attachmentid=18162] [attachmentid=18163] Thanks Johnl3d

Being a huge Doctor Who Fan I thought I would need my own TARDIS. I have been watching the latest series and just got back in to how cool Doctor Who was. This TARDIS is to scale based on plans I found on the internet somewhere. Some guys actually build real versions. The doors open and close and as soon as I finish up a couple of clean ups on the model, I will post it up here fo anyone that wants to use it. Image: You can download a larger version of the rendering below.
