Files are located in the 'Hair Salon' thread, located here: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showt...mp;#entry397248 A:M's hair material in a LONG HAIR scenario, useful for a 'Duck Dynasty' beard, 'weeping-willow' style tree leaves, 'hippie-hair' or glamorous female long hair. The feature being demonstrated here is not so much the hair material as the way it interacts and wraps around other objects, known as collision-detection. Many programs boast impressive hair and styling features, but have very little to show how the hair reacts dynamically in an animation scenario... AND- what happens when the dynamic hair comes into contact with other objects... usual…

I got a one year subscription to 18 F last friday and have been using it over the weekend. I wondered if anyone else is have a few glitches with it ? The first one I noticed was that it crashed out if the maximum resolution was used for the maps in a z buffer render ? It came with a message saying Memory allocation failute 11 ( I think ) If a lower z buffer was chosen it was OK. but the maximum crashed each time it was tried. The second glitch came when trying to "save animation as" after rendering a sequence. The dialogue box would appear but non of the buttons woulld respond when clicked on. Tried exiting the program, restarting, importing sequence…

Greeting again, Wondering your collective thoughts on.... I have 4 characters carrying a 5th character (constrained) on their shoulders. What's he best way to have these folks walk through town? i.e - set up path for each character to follow? - animate the environment and leave the characters stationary? - establish 1 character as a lead and constrain the others to follow? - something else? any advice appreciated. Thanks

I've been thinking about fake SSS. I've been thinking it might be useful to be able to have a map of the thickness of the model. This might be part of a backlit SSS look. We can get something that appears to be a thickness map with surface "transparency" and "density" settings...

I have a suggestion for the older stronger modelers and animator here(hear me out now), I know we have the TAO and I love that for learning but I have another idea that could be beneficial for beginners and good for Animation master as a whole. We could have something where a Mentor would draw a picture(human for now of humanoid) and the student would make it get critique and so on. Then with said model another mentor or the same would have that student rigged rinse and repeat then they could go on to animating the same model. The mentor would for each block would make a tutorial for each task that would be done in this dare I say camp. I am sure this has been before but …

In response to https://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=46957&do=findComment&comment=402377 " Update A changed version, where SSE4 (without AVX) included, is on the way Update2 My provider doesn't like me , has anything against the update " has it been uploaded yet? Having both an AVX and non SSE4 version up might be ideal but confusing too. (I wasn't allowed to reply directly to that thread, that is why I'm posting here.) P.S. I am seriously looking forward to 18K where 0006595(Boolen Cutter is working from some viewpoints perfectly, but from other not....) will be fixed.

It's always a good idea to save your files... that and close all the hundreds of other programs you've forgotten to close... you know... to free up memory. I think this guy was anticipating what was about to happen to him so I took a screen shot of the only thing left of him when things went south. So, don't forget to save your work! P.S. I'm still waiting for Windows to notify me of the solution.

Hi there, currently I am sort of very active, because after long time working with another app returning to AM feels realy rejuvenating! Regarding my problem: Is there any rule how many smartskins can be on one bone? I am asking because i managed to put two on one bone, but currently it seems as if AM lets me only use one and no more. Cheers Heiner

Hi, I have just a few minutes ago completed a new construction I created in A:M, brought over to Makerware and printed it out. It worked very well . It is a door traffic light. This is how it looks in A:M and in Makerbot / Makerware: And here you can read more about how it turned out and what it does with more images: http://www.patchwork3d.de/blog-5-en/complex-3d-print-door-traffic-light-677 See you *Fuchur*

Steve and I have been using poses in models to compose larger models -- even whole sets -- from smaller models. This is very useful to avoid creating multiple copies of mesh, as well as allowing an easy way of turning on and off various parts of the model. Here are the requirements that we had when the pose idea came up: Avoid having multiple copies of the same mesh. If there are 18 chairs in the set, there should not be 18 copies of the mesh in some model. Ideally, they need to be configurable for different situations. For example, we don't want a separate set for the coffee shop before it opens (less clutter) and after (more supplies, etc. laying around and on …

Having a spot of bother with patches going missing. I have prepared a street model for the new project using V15 Copied the model file and the chor over onto another machine using V17J to build up a town using the duplicator wizard When I open up the file in V17 alot of the patches go missing Previously I have modeled in V15 and imported into V17 without trouble. The warning message comes up, but there has never been a problem. This time there was no warning, but it did have a problem. Can anyone kindly suggest a solution ? simon Street Block 01.mdl

Hello Hashers- In the past I have not gotten into designing materials much because there is a such a wealth of materials already available designed by others to choose from, and Dark Tree is also amazing... ...however I am trying to teach myself how to think like a Materials designer and I realized that I have no idea how to design a material for a barber pole. The idea of designing a spiral color wrapping around a cylinder is beyond me..and designing two alternating colors is again bewildering. Does anyone have an idea? Thanks! Tom

What's a good (and hassle-free) way to hard-bake an animation? I mean that the result should be the following: All visible transforms from the original animation are recorded to bone channels. All relationships such as IK and constraints are stripped from bones so that only the direct transform animation kicks in. I tried Bake All Actions, but it didn't give me the results I needed. It appears that this command doesn't really bake all relationship-driven motions: if you delete the model's relationships, the "before" and "after" animations are different. I need this "barebones" motion for my action importer. When I import simple FK-only animations, the import results l…

In the toon render options there is a tonal scale which allows you to set small tags along it which appears to compress the band widths of the tones in the scale(?) Is there a way to control the tonal range into narrow, definable bands, eg 16 or 12 or is it a case of adjusting the tags until the desired result is obtained ? Thanks for your time and consideration simon

This was brought up in the Live Answer Time today and I wanted to mess around a little to see if I could figure out what was happening. What's happening, you can see in this image, is the cones of the lights are breaking through the lids of the boxes. At least the edges of the cones are. Adjusting "width softness" does factor into it somehow. In this example, it's set at 100% for the red light, 50% for the blue and 0% for the green. The oddity is more pronounced in the light set to 0%. Anybody got a clue what's causing this? I'm attaching the project. light_test_1.zip [EDIT] I forgot to mention that there's another oddity. The boxes all penetr…

good evening, When I export in Obj format a model with groups, the groups are well exported in the Obj file. On the other hand, if I apply a UV to the model, the groups disappear in the exported Obj file. Are there some things specific to do to export UVs and groups in the same Obj file? Thank you in advance for your responses.

Hello all, boy has it been ages. I have these models I wish to export as .obj files, but I have no idea how to do it. I looked around online, and got no viable answers. I wanted to export them as .obj files to fiddle with in other programs, which accept such files. Nothing accepts .mdl files. Anyone wish to help me out? I am using A:M version 15, which by the looks of things is fairly old. It sounds viable, as others have mentioned being able to export as .obj files, but I am unsure if it is limited to newer versions of A:M or if there is a step I am missing. Thank you!

In this model the green shape is a Boolean "cutter" and should conceal everything inside it. Can anyone detect an obvious reason that it is not completely hiding the portion of the gray S that is inside it? There don't seem to be any internal patches and all the normals are outward-facing. Hi all, I'm trying to add decals with transparent backgrounds, as I've done many times before without problems. I create my decal in Photoshop CC and save as either TGA or PNG. PNGs come out with a black background; TGAs with white. I've tried all options in save options, but no change. I admit to being rusty, but I'm sure I'm doing this the way I always did. Any suggestions gratefully received!

This is the first time I've ever seen this (v19.0o). Attached is a model of what will ultimately be the hinge on the back door of a 1950's vintage truck trailer. The attached image shows that it has one strange patch that doesn't respond well to "refind normals" which has the effect of pointing its normal opposite to all its neighbours and messing up the smoothness of the surface. The only way to correct it is to select just the patch and flip it's normal. It's not much of a bug but can Steffen fix it? Fruehauf_hinge.mdl

I'm building a railroad indicator lamp, essentially a red/green traffic light. I wanted to simulate the look of the optics of these lights which were designed by mounting an incandescent lamp at the focal length of a coloured glass fresnel lens (like in a lighthouse) such that its light is only visible when viewed almost on-axis as one would from a long distance. I think I've come up with a believable result using a hierarchical klieg light mounted inside the enclosure. It's aimed to shine inside the case and illuminate a small internal disc, standing-in for the lamp filament, sitting near the focal length of the lens. Viewing the indicator while it turns in front of you …

Hello all- I was playing around with what I thought was a simple test. I had a red piece of cloth being sucked up into a vortex. Everything worked as predicted (see attached movie). I then introduced a simple flat object into the scene using the Simple_Scatter tool and wondered if those objects would also be sucked up into the vortex.. Well, nothing happened and no simulation took place. Hmmm.. wondering if I did not check or uncheck some box in the process... Any thoughts would be welcome. Tom ClothForce.mp4 ClothForceTest.prj

Icon delay

Not sure if this is the right toppic but it is a rat her strange archivement. SInce I use AMV17 on my new computer, and changing to 64 bit, I receive a strange delay in the icon. As soon as I click one I see a fast change between "explain icon (txt)", "show icon (symbol)", and finally "use icon (execute)". It is a minimal marge, but it surely slows down the workaround of the program. On winxp or win7 I had no trouble with it, but now on win10 it feels like beating that icon thing to work. What could be happening here?

Hello everyone, back after a long illness and very happy to be working in AM again. I got a beautiful SpaceMouse Pro wireless and it works incredibly in Maya and Blender. I see that AM19 has a check box for the Space Mouse which is AWESOME!!! But it's so sensitive that if I move it a micron the model fly off into infinity. Way way way more sensitive than other 3D programs. How do I tone down the sensitivity of the Space Mouse in AM? Thanks!

Something new is happening when I try to Zoom-RMB around an area. As shown in the screen capture, each time I hit Z and then depress the the screen reverts to the previous view but does result in zooming to the selected area. My current work around is to hold down the space bar (Refresh) before RMB. This issue seems to have started after AMD upgraded my drivers for the Radeon RXT 6700 XT. buggy_zoom.mp4

Hey You Guys, I need to export a short obj sequence. There was a way in the past, but I seem to have forgotten how. I exported each frame as an obj, but every obj has the same mesh shape. There are no differences. So I need to figure out how to export a short animation with each frame as a seperate obj. Anyone know how this is done? Thanks, Detbear

Hi all! A very long time since I posted here :-) I am currently re-rendering my Bella Bear project at 1024 x 576 (16:9) HD ratio since it looks so dated in the format it is. I haven't done anymore work on the project but I just wanted to re-render it an familiarise myself with it again (all those hours I put into it). Anyway I have hit a stumbling block on one of the sections when it comes to rendering, I am getting perculiar shadows which I can get rid of using multi-pass but this ups the render times by a factor of four... I am using AM 14c, I know there is a newer version out there but I am loathe to re-render everything in that version since it might break…

Here are some examples of the additional customization Steffen has programmed into the A:M Community window as of v17Alpha5. In order to use this feature the user simply adds a customized HTML file named 'Support.html' into the v17 directory. The capability enabled here is primarily to supply a localized interface or menu within the A:M Community screenspace. Local administrators, companies, schools and even individual users can then push information utilities to that menu. Based on their interests or needs some optimized files could be supplied to them. Example 1: Holmes's A:M Properties tiddlywiki Note that there are some obstacles to overcome if we are …

I finally decided to take the plunge. After skipping Lion all together, I figured I'd better catch up with the OS before I get completely left behind. I went out and bought a new HD and spent all of yesterday backing up my old HD in case this doesn't go well. After a lengthy download, I've installed Mountain Lion and went straight away to see if it had any adverse affects on A:M. By coincidence, this is the day that my subscription expired, but I'd known it was coming and had bought my upgrade last week. After pulling out the files so that I could get A:M to prompt me to activate it, I entered the activation code and started up v16b. Everything seemed fine …

Hello- I just purchased a web licenses for V. 17.a. I started a project and rendered a scene that was 130 frames long as an avi. When I loaded the avi into After Effects to do some tweaking... the length of the avi turned out to be only 64 frames long (?) I tried rendering a QuickTime movie but it also only rendered about half of what I had told the Render engine to do. I am a long time user of AM but can't figure out if I'm missing something simple. Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks! Tom

Being the impatient person I am, have never really got around to SSing properly. In order to improve, that needs to be addressed so, have watched a couple of useful tutorials on how to do it, and tried the exercise in TOAM. My question is, How much can be put in one SS relationship ? For example, The hand bone is rotated through 90degrees ( in the Y plane ? ) as if to say 'Stop". The SS is then set. If the hand bone is now rotated ( in the x plane? ) , as if to give the thumbs down. Does that require a new SS, or can it be incorporated into the first one ? Hope thats a clear question . regards simon PS Supplemental Using the 2008 ri…

My next "It Can't Be Done" series will be on Simcloth in A:M. (I'm going to award myself a book by Martin Hash for suggesting that topic. ) Cloth seems to be one of those things that people find very enticing when they see it but very frustrating when they try it themselves. I think a series that builds up the knowledge base from the basics to the useful tricks would be a good thing. Here is your chance to suggest particular cloth things that you would like to see solutions for. i probably won't get to this until July, after the Image contest so you have time to think about what you want to see. tJRN4-A5I5E And if you didn't cat…

When starting A:M up, the program suddenly stops loading, displaying this message: It just sits there for 20 seconds, then continue and complete loading. I am not sure if this is a new behaviour, but I think so. I then tried opening the community service tab in A:M with the purpose of changing what I thought to be a setting, so A:M would load without trying to connect to community service. I couldn't find any settings there, just the login screen. Then tried to log on, and guess what happened: yes, exactly: it halted for 20 seconds and then came with this message: I am not interested in using community service (from inside A:M anyhow) so ho…

I wonder if it is possible in some way to add a slight (or not so slight) automatic random jitter to an object? This could be to a camera (to make it look handheld), to a character (ie to make it look like it is freezing), or to a light (to make it look like a faulty flickering lightbulb)?

This may sound a bit convoluted but, I've spent the last few days trying to learn how to use Flash and produced a short New Year greeting in it. It uses the background colour rather than an alpha channel. could that be the problem ? regards simon V17g OSX
