This is a new image I've been working on as part of a redesign of my site. (January is turning out to be a slow work month.) "Trails" took a bit over 24 hours to render on a single 1.8Ghz G5, with 16-pass oversampling. It's lit with five dub lights and the practical below the peak of the roof. The clouds are a seperate layer, to simplify things, and because I wasn't sure how much work I'd need to do on them in Photoshop. (I ended up applying a half-pixel gaussian blur, but that was it.) Each cloud is a tube with something like 50 cross-sections. I ran my Punk&Bloat AppleScript on them twice, and crossfaded between the two action files between frame 0 an…

The right one is my first model and I would like it to look like the left one in it's details. I have never done anything like this, so any advice is really appreciated. Correct me if I am going in the wrong direction. Would I take my model apart as in flattening the hull? Once it is flattened, draw the plate lines on it in photoshop and then apply the tga as a decal color map and bump map? The model on the left was done by Fred Kuentz and William Babington. Since the hull is basically an octagon, should I flatten each of the eight hull longitudinal sections, or just half the hull flat? I also wonder how can I achieve any proportional accuracy and spaci…

Hey, Here is a preliminary clip (still rendering) of what should be a looping background. I would like to donate it to the community when it is finished. It is kind of like a primordial, other-worldly kind of view, you could composite things over it. I would post the zipped file with the frames on my site. Let me know what you think. Hey, guys! I've been experementing with A:M for about four years now, and have finally got some models I'm happy with. Here's a still of one of my bets models. I completed the entire wireframe in one night, and spent about two weeks after that rigging it. Unfortunately, I don't have very many good pictures of him since my computer has a memory leak. It ended up deleting him after only three or four stills. Anywho, here's a cool close up and full body view. In memory of Sparky. I knew him well...

Hi hashers, I started my first model for the boxing game i wanna make today. He is herbie the frog and he will be the main player character. I modeled him in segments because i wanna keep my first game simple and this way i dont have to worry about how my joint rotaions will translate from one program to another. I just slapped those textures on there, there will be much better texture maps with details and variation. I tried to keep this model low poly so the texture maps will finish it off and maybe make the edges where the segments meet look better. I was trying to put a test eye map on his eyeball but spherical mapping isnt working in 11t for some reason, th…

Hi, Here is a movie of my first model. A strange looking fellow. It's all original, I'd say I put about 8-10 hours into it. I've learned a lot but I could use some critiques to help me sort out the problem areas (I can upload the project file if that helps or is desired). I used shaggy's hand as a reference when I made mine, but it has some real rough parts. Plus, there is one 5 point patch that will not close, no idea why. See pic. One thing I can't seem to get is where you see a slight "diamond" area in a patch and can't seem to get rid of it. Also, I think I may have used too many hooks. In particular on the top of the hand, they look real bad :/ Pl…

I have kept up-to-date with my blog and modeling 30 household objects (6 so far) but now I have added animations as well with the aim of 30 animations. After 3 animations I am really pleased with the progress, of course it is not wonderful or awe inspiring but I am moving in the right direction and moreover my 3rd animation gave me a sense of achievement as I was able to do everything I wanted in A:M because I had spent the time gaining the knowledge on how to do it. anyhow if you follow the link at the bottom and select the animation page you can see the progress. As usual the blog etc. is up-to-date.

Hello, Since I'm diving into movie creation, I realize there's a process involved, beginning even before any 3D work is done. Concepting, etc. This is an area where I'm a bit unsure how to start. I have stories in my head, but if I was to get them out in the scattershot way I tend to imagine them (thinking of different scenes at random, etc), no one would have any idea what's going on. It would be like Pulp Fiction edited by someone on hallucinogenics. I also have this tendency to constantly second-guess myself and doubt if I'm doing something correctly. I end up getting hung up worrying about it, and all my enthusiasm deflates. I think if I had a fairly solid idea of…

My wife and I are celebrating our 23rd anniversary today, so I'm created a bouquet for my wife. Actually this will be part of a card I'll be printing shortly. Yes, I am indeed prone to bad puns! But fortunately my wife has the same brand of humor. The card will explain that the result is due to a bad cell phone connection when I called the florist... Bill "Bad Pun! Bad Pun!" Gaylord

Hi all In my webcomic I've been doing an annual christmas story. This time I gave the protagonist's a slightly different manner of getting to the North-pole as seen here: Anyway I rather liked this concept and thought the magic snow bus came dangerously stealing the show for a while. Therefore since I felt I could probably use it for other projects I decided to take a crack at it. Obviously this has a way to go. I was a little premature putting in the wheels on but I wanted to get the idea across for these images. On the top of my list for what to do next is to work out the mechanics of the wheels and figure out how to do the windows and shingles. Anyway …

As it stands, I added 10 key frames to a clip, one every second, and alternated 0 and 100% for the ambiance settings of a model bulb. Setting the interpolation to "hold" gave the quick blink. Clumsy, but it works. Never having used expressions before, could someone give me an idea of how to do this over a 10 second clip? This would be more elegant than keyframing, especially if I wanted to do this for a longer clip. Thanks

To speed up render times [in a multi-frame animation] am I right in assuming that objects that are turned off in the Properties no longer exist are far as render times and computing effort? I have a situation in which I've built jungle foilage. The individual 'leaf units' are light in CP's, but there's a lot of units. I'm thinking it would be nice if I could have them turned off before they enter the frame, and turned off again after they leave.

Okay people... here's my dilemma(s)..... 1) I can't grasp the whole "decal" thing at all. Just don't get it. Is there any straight forward tutorial that shows a complete idiot how to do it from scratch? 2) I would love to show you my recent work in the WIP room, but I am not sure of which format to use, nor am I sure how to save just the MODEL and not the whole project.... A;M doesnt seem to let me choose the .mdl ending. 3) Any ideas on how to bone a UFO Saucer style with the bottom that open straight down.... without swaying back or forth, as if it were connected to a piston in the center? This would be alot easier to show you if I knew how to upload imag…

Hey--- I have a new movie on my site http://mcampbell.250free.com showing how I was able to achieve a 'new look' for a toon character using A:M and Photoshop and After Effects. click on the 'toon shader' button. Basicly, the character was already designed for a childrens book and they (the potential client) wanted the SAME look but in motion 3D... I prepped this test in 6 hours...it may sell the gig... I roughly modelled the character in A:M, then did selective renders...tail...skin...shirt...eyes...etc by turning OFF the visibility of everything I DID NOT want rendered and I used an alpha channel...brought the :04 sequences individually into Photoshop where…

I took my fish character, duped the head, installed mouth bones and started playing with building Sliders. 1st question: Can you have three [more than two, anyway] mouth positions on one slider? For example: "AH" at 0%. "EE" at 50% and "OO" at 100%? At the moment, it would appear not...only my two-position sliders move anything on the model...but hope springs eternal. 2nd: When I copied the fish's head, it's textures came over with it. I can do a snapshot in the Modeling/Bones window, and in the Action window, and it looks fine. But in the Choreography, it's solid black. Where did the textures go?

Here's something I've been working on for quite awhile, in my downtime. Still left to do is texturing (the hard, almost-black rubber and plastic of the mask) I have to finish the "eyes" (right now they're just flat panels with the pics decaled, which is pretty close to the final product, except the eye pics are going to be on torn pieces of paper instead of flat patches). I'll need to tweak the refractive properties of the glass in the eyepieces. Also, the lights, which are just kinda thrown inside the mask for these renders, will become permanent parts of the model. There will be a volumetric "lamp" inside the mask which will backlight the translucen…

So I didn't actually finish the animation I was working on for animation class last semester, but I still got an A. Now the guy who did the voice over work for Flynn has been asking me when it's going to be done, and when we start on the next episode, so I figure in two weeks, when the semester is over, I should get back to work on it. Today I kinda felt like doodling a bit in A:M, so I made these two props, a rusty sword, and a wooden shield.

There may already be a way to do this but if no one has posted anything yet.... Here's a way to switch between camera shots, angles, rotations etc... just using one camera, during one render. I've included the project file so you can pick at it. 1. Set the camera's "Interpolation Method" to "HOLD". 2. Move the camera to a different point in time. 3. Now the camera will quickly switch from one view to the next. camera_switch.zip

Hi. Ive been wanting to expand my modeling skills. So I started modeling a human... My friends has a student ver. of zB.. uhm a program and let me install it on my laptop. I created a 1200 Patch base mesh in A:M and used the OBJ exporter and exported it out to the.. other program. I then sculpted it there and brought it back in, though I had to do a lot of resolution changes in the polymesh to have a clean convert to patches. The model that I use between the programs to work on has 21k patches, just at the threshold of what I needed. Here is where I am at: These to rendered at 1min15sec 5pass at Super35 each. Wires: I am enjoying this process very muc…

Some of you may remember the image I did for the April image contest, which you can see here: http://www.hash.com/stills/displayimage.php?album=30&pos=41 I was asked if I would donate this scene for inclusion on the AM CD, and I agreed to do so. However, the CD is intended for new users to be able to load up the scene, click 'render' and have the nifty scene produce a cool result. My scene there relies on Darktrees for about 90% of the texturing, and since the Simbiont is a 3rd party utility (and a little confusing to get running for someone who's never even used AM), I agreed to do a remake of the scene using only textures/materials that can run in …

Hello! I am very new to a:m. I'm using A:M 2001, 8.5p+ and i'm trying to create spheres. i understand the concept and everything is going ok, except my half-circle, that i'm going to lathe into the sphere looks a bit jagged, not perfectly curved. the odd thing is, if i close the project & reopen it, it then looks fine. so, i create my sphere. so far so good. if i look at it in shaded mode, it no longer looks perfect, nor does it in wireframe any longer either, unless i save, close, and reopen the project. anyone know why this is happening or how to get around it? thanks!
