And what can you do to avoid it? I've noticed that in a lot of models that I build, I am getting these problems and I am not sure what I could be doing better to avoid it. I don't think I am doing anything strange as I am building these models, but maybe there is something that I am doing that I am not realizing. Seems to me like I'd have to do a screen capture of one of my work sessions for anyone to be able to tell where I am screwing up. I am probably going to try and do the giraffe tutorial, maybe that will shed some light, however----I was making good progress and would possibly like to have a finished dragon model at the end of the day. help........ …

This is my first attempt at a car. Had to take a break from modeling my T-Rex. Didn't know where to start, so I started to model the view most people would see if they ever got close to one in real life. It shouldn't be hard to figure out which car this is - I hope And yeah, I know the lighting sucks.

Hey, Here is a preliminary clip (still rendering) of what should be a looping background. I would like to donate it to the community when it is finished. It is kind of like a primordial, other-worldly kind of view, you could composite things over it. I would post the zipped file with the frames on my site. Let me know what you think. Just got V12.0 AM 2006 today and thought I'd see ii it feels any different than V11 2004. Modelling feels about the same but so far no gliches. I had out of memory issues with 11 so have been using 10.5. V12 appears to be a bit more comfortable although I have had no bad experiences with modelling in the earlier versions. I decided for my 1st model I would try to build my friends car. A 66 Malibu SS which I took pic's of for roto's about a year ago and also did some airbrush work on the car when he built it. Lot's of tweaking and fabricating to go as I plan to build the complete car and haven't done much mechanical modelling. I've seen some really nice car's built in this…

Ok, I did a pretty good job of attaching the hand, I need to attach the arm now and so I have to make a hole for it. This is my least favorite part as I have a good chance of screwing up the geometry I already have. I have taken 2 screenshots, one for reference of the way the arm is now, and another with blue lines and dots where I think the new splines and cp's should go. Do you think I am pretty much right on the money, or would you do it differenty? Roger[attachmentid=18351][attachmentid=18352]

Hello, I'm getting to the point where I am finalizing the construction of this dragon model, and I have to attach a hand, where the hand has 12 pts at its beginning, and the stump of the wrist has 8, I believe. This has always been the most difficult part for me....I generally try to model parts separately, and then attach them later, as that has always been the way that has worked best for me in the past. However, due to AM being different from polygon modellers, it doesn't seem to make sense to do that anymore. When I am trying to join to parts with disparate numbers of points, the simple solution is to make sure that each end has the same number…

Hello I seem to have screwed something up.......I started working on the giraffe tutorial, since I thought that might be beneficial since I still have some problems with modelling. I wanted to change the units for the grid, so I could follow along properly, from cm to ft. However, after I did that, the grid disappeared even though I have "display grid" checked. I had changed the grid spacing from .16cm to 1foot, I wouldn't have thought that would have made it disappear. I probably did something wrong, what I want to know is is there anyway to get the default settings back? Roger

Well, it's been a while since I had any chance to do any modeling, so I thought the best way was to model something I'm really interested in...The Honda Rune. So far I have the back fender, front fender, and gas tank (thanks to help on the main forum). Got a ways to go, but it's coming along. I am basing this off of some press photos (top and side views, but they don't quite match...), as well as a little scale model I have. Someday soon I'll be able to fork out the $25k or so to buy a real one. In the meantime I've been developing hardbags for the Rune, which will be available in less than a month (if you have a Rune...or VTX 1800). Comments are welcome. …

OK sorry to be a pest.... I read the help file on this, I followed the directions but there must be something I'm missing because while I am getting the mirroed part that I want, it is not attaching. I am working in front view, its mirroring along the y-axis properly, but does not attach. I am grouping the left half of the body, then right click, choose CFA, and I get the mirrored part but it doesn't attach. Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Do I have to move the pivot? thanks in advance Roger

[attachmentid=18147]Hello, Here's a cave for a short film I'm working on. It doesn't look quite right to me for some reason. I had shaded it with the darktree shaders, but they take forever to render on my laptop, and I temporarily uninstalled them. What do you think? I seem to remember it looking better with the shaders ( I am using clay shaders, combined with some of the other materials). I wanted the main characters to have a "claymated" look, however, I am not sure that is appropriate for every prop / item in the film. Would you stick completely with the clay look, or have clay characters in a semi-photoreal environment? I ask becaus…

Martin and gang---- I am not sure how difficult this would be to implement, but it would be kind of nice if there were a way to bookmark different entries within the help system, so that you can go back to them quickly. I am not a full-time user of AM, and if I don't do something a bunch of times I find myself having to go back to the help index or pester people on the board to find something. It would be nice to be able to personalize the help file, in order to keep entries on things that stump you handy. Just something I would find useful. If there is already a way to do this I'd love to know how. Thanks Roger

I am working on a possible mini movie contest entry. The action takes place in a baseball game. I am attaching a short clip showing a possible opening shot where the camera flies in to center on the pitcher. I am also attaching a larger still that shows the lighting in better resolution. I am looking for comments and critiques on the set and the lighting. The characters are not posed in anyway other than a pose that is not the standard T pose. When the camera zooms in the pitcher is very likely to be in a different pose and there will be more players on the field. Also, there be a little more detail on the field such as foul lines and markings on the outfield w…

Trying something I usually don't do and that is modeling. I am posting a wireframe and shaded wireframe to help with my questions. This model will be animated and I was wondering if the normal rigs will work when there are no hand or mainly feet. And any potential trouble with the model ..I noticed that the arms could use another ring or two of splines....There will be no mouth only implied by the bouncing of the nose. And I have to add a tail. The skirt will be cloth. [attachmentid=18162] [attachmentid=18163] Thanks Johnl3d

During the creation of this beast, I did something that I do with other 3d programs.....I split the thing into separate projects, so each body part ( mostly) has a separate project file. Its just easier for me to work this way. However, I have come to the point where I want to start bringing these parts into the same project file, but I cannot seem to find a way to save the model out as a .mdl file from within the project----although there seems to be an option to import them from the File menu. So, if someone could give me the Saving and Importing .mdl files for Dummies version, I will post a picture of my dragon as he exists so far. I am sure its some…

Hello Everyone! I would like to share some recent work i have done! I did these three models for a game, but it turned out that Version incompatability halted the process. I do hear that the production is well on its way again. There is a sniper rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol (futuristic). I need to check a few things first, but i would like to donate these to the community, I don't have any use for them, and i am pretty sure that alot of people would like to play with them Ben

I am at the end of my ideas. I have made a mov file in after effects of letters being written out. I was going to animate the pencil chracter to follow the mov file in rotoscope to get the action and AM allows the rotoscope to be rendered as well. So I have tried for four days to get this to work without success. It appears to be working in the chor or action but when rendered the rotoscope is not in the correct location and it plays from the beginning of the animation even though it has been key frame to start and end at certain location. So does anybody have a thought of how to follow the script I created in after effects or is there another way to create the…

Been working with AM for a while off and on (trying to be as much "on" as possible more recently). This is my take on "The Door's Stuck". If anyone could take a look at it and tell me what you think, I'd appreciate it. It may take a bit to DL, as it's approx 20M in QT format; any ideas on how to keep animations smaller would also be welcome. Take a look... ftp://64.227.193.8/stuck.mov Thanks, Rich

Being a huge Doctor Who Fan I thought I would need my own TARDIS. I have been watching the latest series and just got back in to how cool Doctor Who was. This TARDIS is to scale based on plans I found on the internet somewhere. Some guys actually build real versions. The doors open and close and as soon as I finish up a couple of clean ups on the model, I will post it up here fo anyone that wants to use it. Image: You can download a larger version of the rendering below.

The new v13 displacement is so fun to play with, but for some tricky situations (see attachment) you have to go further than the usual 8 bit gray scale image displacement maps. Remember that this is just one single patch! ..and it's fast to render too; less than 60 seconds with 9 passes. [attachmentid=13363]

I just finished a small presentation for the Wesley Mission. Their major symbol is the dove so I built a simple 3d dove as a unifying element. The project only had a two day turnaround, so I rendered it in realtime shaded mode and then used Mirage to add drop shadows. I also rendered the doves to load into Mirage's particle engine for the transitions. [attachmentid=18054] SOMVideo Unfortunately it's not streaming so it'll take a while to load (5mb), or you can right click and save the swf.

I've been working on a short film about the Dragonlance books. Specifically the part where Sturm defends the High Clerist Tower and dies. I've been experiementing with diffrent styles of modeling and was just wondering what particular look do the members of the community think would fit well? I have my own particular style and prefrence but i'm not sure it fits well. I tend to have a mix of real-life and cartoon (much like my avatar pic). Any suggestions?

Hi, The Battleship model needed to be 'special' and I’m not the best at creating neat space ships so the sketch below and model are loosely based on a ship I saw a while back in either Doom or Quake (great sources for that kind of thing). After the screen test I could see some of the texturing needed work but I wanted to get it out for comments. [attachmentid=18013] Concept sketch (scribble) Screen test. http://www.virtualmediastudios.com/battleship.avi The bridge could use more lighting – can’t see all the cool consoles. I've started on a new model last night. Unfortunatly, I don't have internet access at home, just work so I don't have any images.......yet. My question regards hair (see Topic Title) I've avoided modeling hair forever, simply because I suck at it....of course if I had taken the time to try it and practice it I wouldn't suck at it. Anyway, I'm starting to play around with it and the question is should I use helmet hair...or wait until my copy of AM v12 or 13, which ever the latest is, comes in to use the new hair system (should only be a couple more days). I'll be monitoring this post all day so any feedback would be greatly appreciated. By the way, does anyone have any go…

I've got the animation complete, it runs about 11 minutes long, and is 37 MB in size. I was able to save it using Sorensen codec. You can download it here to see it http://dogst.com/SWimmortal.mov. It's 320x240. It's my voice doing all the audio, I have a couple people who'll do the different voices, I just haven't been able to get them over to record them, but this will at least give you the story and soundtrack. My skill as an animator is limited, so with a couple minor changes, this is how it will look. Let me know what you think so far. Thanks Dan

Against The Author, The Beginning of the End Update Hello everyone. I know, I haven't posted in ages, probably most of you have forgotten this production even existed, but yes, we are moving along happily and are well on schedule to having ATA released Winter 2006. I know, a little farfetched, just wait till you see it before you knock it, So, yes, I recently viewed the forums in order to update myself to 13b, (which I love t…
