Here is an image from a lighting study. I am trying to get better at matching shadows and lighting properties with background images. This one shows me with an old friend I met while hiking (I'm the one on the left in the picture). People who have been around long enough will probably remember the other guy as Ted from the Hash character set in the 2004-2006 time frame.

I wanted to make a character on which I could use SimCloth. So here she is. I'm really unhappy with the head, though. There seems to be a wealth of things I don't yet know about the face and head. This one's an improvement over other faces I've modeled but I still can't get away from this gaunt, sunken look. I'm also working on ways to make the clothes more interesting (texturing and such). C&C invited. Rhett

Alright, I haven't started on the face yet - I'm setting up the rig for the rest of the body first - but I thought I'd see if you guys have any comments. This will be my first full rig, and if you have any insight on face geometry, let me know! I've attached the facial geometry. I did set up a blink pose just to make sure it would work properly, but other than that the face is completely unrigged. Does the geometry look ok or are there going to be problem areas when I start animating? Thanks for your help! untitled.mov

Hey everybody! This scene comes from an idea that I had the other night; it's not techinally amazing but it is original. My goal was to come up with a look or feel that hasn't been seen before. What do you think? Lee

Today, in a fit of boredom, I made a 3D Thom icon for A:M on my desktop, because it's silly for a 3D app to have a 2D icon. And then that project mutated into this:

Hi I spent the last few days messing around with froggy wild west shoot out. This is just the humble beginnings. This is nowhere near the final level. The buildings will not be all the same texture and height. They are just there for my basic layout. I have a start on the stable and the general store though. I will need to make tons of props and stuff. My friend jin kazama is going to help me out. I'm gonna spend the rest of the week in torque working on the two game. I will do more to froggy shoot out on the weekend and keep you updated. Here's the wmv at 2.5 mb: http://www.3dfrog.com/wips/froggyshootout/herbieblast4.wmv Thanks

This should be viewed as fan movie (characters and concepts are undoubtably copyrighed), byt I came out with the idea and I had to make it... I made the characters long time ago, but I had them re - rigged for the animation... I've animated first two sequences and then I had other things to do, sooooo, this post is probably the way to get things started again... As I finish the sequences I will post them, and of course everyone around here is invited for comment (PLEASE) So, first sequence comes your way! Drvarceto p.s. no voices, sound effects (or any sound for that matter) yet! MIKKE_1seq_HQ.mov

I have a choreography that at one time had a sound file in it (approx 1600 frames worth) I deleted the sound file from chor I deleted all keyframes from the chor - so that the only key frames are on frame 0 and frame 180ish I want to use this chor as a starting chor for subsequent chors as it contains starting models, camera, lights, render settings, etc. I add a new sound file (about 180 frames), change the starting chor length to be 180. I save this chor. When I restart A:M and bring this chor back into A:M, the chor length is still 1600? But there is no sound file, no keyframes past 180. I need to be able to save the chor length correctly in each…

In the attached image I have several different styles of simple "building" graphics all created from one model with several poses. Now... check out the short building and the tall building. I am using a "window" decal with a color image and a bump image with a repeat. For the tall building I increase the vertical repeat.. depending on the height I increase or decrease this value. My question is this... I am very lazy... would there be a way to "link" the Y repeat of one image in a decal to another image? ... or... for bonus points, would there be a way to link the Y repeat value to the value of the "height" pose? I would love to have the "windows"…

Just a mirror of the Water splashing thread on the main A:M forum, to allow me to post a QuickTime. This is a really fast and crude demo, but the blue patches are just small 2x2 grids and the cyan objects are spheres with the tops & bottoms truncated (have to do that, otherwise SimCloth tells you it's unsolvable.) Obviously, the model & SimCloth parameters would have to be tweaked to allow the "drops" to deform more naturally, but it looks like the idea of using SimCloth to simulate water might just be doable after all. Just a quick post to let everyone know that a revised, large-screen version of my animation <ESC> is up on AMFilms. This is the one that won the IRTC for October 2003. I cleaned up some of the animation and fixed a bunch of textures. http://amfilms.hash.com/search/Entry.php?entry=786 Interestingly enough, I got an email from a guy who had independently come up with the same concept of an escape key escaping. He was kind enough to say that he had enjoyed my film. Although he's doing it in another application, I thought I'd post his proof of concept render. Zach

Gonna use this as a dual thread of sorts. First of all I'm modeling that constitution refit that I had troubles with in the prop import thread. Second of all, I'm doing it in V17 and seeing how it runs. So first up, some pics and a quick benchmark! So here it is in V16 AO: 30% Global Ambience: 80% Occlusion: 95% Multi-Pass 16x 720p Render Time: 7:37 V17 Beta 5: AO: 30% Global Ambience: 80% Occlusion: 95% Multi-Pass 16x 720p Render Time: 6:09 Now you may see it there, there's noise over the saucer in the V17 one and it's the color of the background. This is apparent in both quick render and render to file and more apparent i…

Just a quick screenshot of the model I'm currently working on...Tara. I'm working in 10.5 and this is the first time I've got to a point where I'm happy with the way a character model is progressing. This is about a week's worth of evenings work. However I wanted to get some feedback from A:M veterans at this point. Where do I need to focus my attention. BTW, ignore the far side of the face, I have been wroking on smoothing out the bumps in the near side only. So, for example, the bump in the eyelid is pretty much sorted in the near side of the model. All the textures are temporary. Apart from that, don't spare my feelings! -Mark.

It's funny how inspiration can take you where you didn't think you were going. Case in point, John's thread on his Kapsule characters. I found them to be very cute and creatively stimulating. I have this pair of grape characters that I thought about redoing, so I did. Only thing is that in the redoing, I created totally new characters and I'm kinda surprised at the results. These characters are "bitties" (there was this elderly african-american woman who would stop by the pet store I used to manage every easter for her "bitties" -- baby chicks. The name stuck with me and I'm delighted to be able to use it) and they are kinda elfin, sorta fairy-like people. …

Hi fellow Hashers, Í've been awfully busy lately with my schoolwork but in my spare moments i managed to start the character that i was intetn on making when i bought A:M. His name is Richard Derry, he's a midle aged man who's depressed bc he has recently lost his wife. Here is the head WIP, i have yet to do the ears b finals are creeping up on me but i'll work on those as soon as summer vacation starts (june 16th). Meanwhile i would like to refine the face as much as possible before moving on. C & C are welcome. PS. i was in a rush so the shadows on the skylit render are only raytraced with one ray.

I like to balance a little good news with a little bad news... THE BAD: Here is an example of the 'render anomoly' where my shadows 'pop' and I am wondering if anyone gets this upon rendering animations. THE GOOD: BEER! I recently modeled and animated a nice glass of beer! TO SEE the GOOD and BAD: Roll over my avatar and you will see a button to play the avatar full quicktime. THE BEER: The cool stuff with the beer (still dinking with it) is the bubbles and the auto gravity pose and the empty pose. For the bubbles, I made two :15 animations in AdobeAfterEffects of rising bubbles with an alpha. I then applied those cookie-cut style to geometry cut an…

I haven't been splining for a while so last night I decided to get some practice in. My motherboard on my modelling PC went south but I was able to salvage my model files by slaving the harddrive to my internet PC. I have been wanting to make a virtual reef aquarium. I made this lionfish in a few hour's but still have some tweaking to do as well as decaling. I thought it looked pretty good so far so I decided to start this thread and get some feedback. The color pics are mostly for reference and are what I could find on the web. And an anemone using an image file with hair. Hello! As always it has been a while since I've posted anything here but I have been lurking! I have a new project now that I figured I should post a WIP of. First a little background: As my forum handle suggests, I am a photographer. I shoot a lot of digital but have in the past year gotten into analog photography. I now shoot my own B/W film and develop myself. The very popular and famous film, Kodachrome, was discontinued last year by Kodak. This film which is truly unique will never be made again. Also the one lab in the world that can still process it will stop processing at the end of this year. I managed to get a hold of a single roll of K…

"Stolen Smells" is a children's book that was commissioned to be adapted into an A:M-animated short by the Anzovins. Using the same style of flat lighting as The Duel, it looks like they've managed to match the 2D look of the original book very closely, though the characters are fully animated models. Anyway, I've been looking forward to seeing this since I first read about it--it's always nice to see the different styles that A:M can be used for.

This will be my first actual animation contribution to one of our Spleengene videos. Before it has always been "non-camera" stuff. The song references numerous local Portland-Vancouver venues and bands. BACK STORY: A local band that I wanted to promote but couldn't work into the song is the Mike Branch Band. A few months ago on Face Book he posted this picture of his logo as a "tattoo" and someone complained and he was asked to take it down. A later attempt ended with the same result. It was taken with good humor and became a running gag amongst those in the know. 4s_Mike_Branch_Glasses.mov

Hi All, I got AM back when it was version 5.0, and stuck with it up to 7.1.. I stepped out of the 3-D scene for quite a few years, and just within the last few weeks, dropped by the Hash site to see the changes they made in software. I was blown away at the improvements (though I still need to upgrade ). Anyway, I've been doing 3D game development and low-poly (I know it's a dreaded word) modeling as a hobby/sidebusiness for about a year now, and wanted to start doing some cinematic stuff. So, out comes my copy of AM... To make a long story short, I'm in the process of "re-learning" AM (you don't use it, you lose it), and thought that I'd get my feet wet b…

Thought I'd try something today just for kicks. I had noticed in v14 that you can export OBJ files... I don't recall in previous versions of having a workable feature of this. So - I decided to test it out in getting some displacement and normal map textures for a model. I started with a basic 4 point patch and unwrapped it for texturing purposes - and so that when I export the model I'd have it already unwrapped for whatever program I use to sculpt the texture details in. Once I exported this patch I loaded it up in my sculpting app.. For this test I used Silo. I sculpted in a sort of - I guess you'd call it an eye and then exported the displacement map and No…

Hi, It's me again. I need to freeze a sprite system so a camera can move though it. Searching I found: "Set initial velocity to zero." Hmm... seems to me like in the chor you'd let the sprite system form then at some frame you'd 'set the initial velocity to zero' and maybe 'rate of emission' and 'spin' and ???? as well but this isn't working for me. Of course if I set these values in the material section... nothing happens in the chor (as one would suspect). However, sprite systems are tricky devils and I haven't played with them for many years. Is there a way to do it? And pretend I'm a complete idiot and assume I know nothing (I need where, how, wh…
