User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I'd like to model a fly rod, but the only problem I see is with the fishing line. I'm really bad with bones and constraints and what not, but I'm guessing i'd probably want to assign bones to the line or something to make it limp. I also need to wrap it around the reel, obviously. I just wanted to know what the best way to go about making the line was before i started.

So I have mastered modeling a vase (pronounced Voz) and wanted to move on to something a little more complicated. This is also somewhat of a test for me to see if I have embedded everything into my project so it can all be downloaded by you guys. There should be 2 rotoscopes and 1 spline in this project. The handle of the bow should be approx. 15cm tall/high. The question is: What would be my best approach to modeling at least the handle of this thing? I'm not necessarily looking for someone to just do it for me, but I'd like some instruction as to how to approach this thing. I'm guessing there should be some extrusion involved, but I do not have a top vi…

I am a new user, and while trying to model a character, I have encountered many problems. In a nutshell, the whole thing is very overwhellming. I would appreciate any advice any experianced modelers here have to offer. Also, if anyone has a cool model they want to donate, that would be awsome! Many thanks.

This is intended more for the newbies out there to help you to get acquainted with the software. Yes, you can move on to modeling more organic pieces fairly quickly, but I would encourage you to take some time and really learn what is possible with the more "mechanical" forms. I'll be posting examples (pics and models) of each of these soon, but this is a list of models that are a combination of various shapes (squares, rectangles, circles, spheres, and so on) that, when put together, give you quite a bit that you can actually use in various projects. There are an endless variety of sizes and shape combinations. And, these can vary from realistic to cartoony. …

i'm totally new to animation master and 3d animation and modeling but i'm very interested in learning it. i own animation master 2006 and its on a windows system. i also own the book Animation:Master A complete Guide by David Rogers; but it doesn't really say anything much about anime or modeling that much in general. i'm wondering how to model an anime looking person; nothing photo realistic and no animation for now. does anyone have any tips for me? is there another forum i can look at? i went to this site called katakata atelier but it's all in japanese and was no help. just looking for some helpful replies or guides; thanks

Er... hello. I am rather new to Animation Master and I rather suck at modeling. I'm trying to do a movie with my friend that requires a CG shopping cart. I would really appreciate it if someone could take the time out of their busy life to make a shopping cart model for me. I have tried SO many times, I really just can't. So once again, if you have any time and would like to help some kid with a movie he is making, uh... please do. I would appreciate it very much. ~ Matt

Hello again, Here is what I got(S). 1. I took a grid and decaled a picture of me on my deck. 2. I cut myself out of the picture and created a grid to match the shape, and decaled myself on it. 3. I set up a choreography with the complete backdrop (number one), the homer model in front, and my cutout in front of that. 4. I set the camera, angles, etc. 5. Lights...I cut all but the key, and made it a cone, the sun was way too much. Problem, I can't get Homer, or the background to look right, they both seemed washed out. I attached pics, any ideas would be great. I don't know if I should be adjusting the lights, or making some changes in the mod…

Hi I'm right now working with a model and have encountered some problems, for example when I rotate my model AM runs very slow, lags. Same thing happens if I for example change the vertex positions or similar. I have checked if my CPU is overloaded or something similar but it is not, my model have around 4000 patches. What could be wrong? My PC is old but not very old, using Vista 32 bit, 2 GB RAM, AMD Athlon 2.6 GHz and a Radeon X1650. My graphic card is bad? Any suggestions of what graphic card is good for 3D animation/modeling? //Birdie

I'm missing something very fundamental here: I'm trying to model a logo from scratch using a rotoscoped image. I got the outline for the logo finished and looking good and then extruded it to get some depth. My rendering mode is set to shaded & wireframe. As you can see from the attached image (which is the perspective view), the sides of the logo look fine but I'm missing a front & back face. How do I add a front and back face to the model?

This is a really newby-ish question, but is there a way in A:M to attatch two splines together withought having to make complicated stuff? Say I want to make a rocket. How do I take a four column 3-D shape and "connect" it to say an 8 collumn 3-D model. Sorry if you're having complications understanding what I'm saying, I don't know the vocab too well lol.

Hiya. As an old newbie (ie, I started with AM '98, '99, ...then recently upgraded to '07), over the last 8 or so years I've been a poly-modeler. I can model in poly's quickly, smoothly, and have a fun time doing it. Now, back to give AM another spin around the block, I find myself fighting the spline-mindset. I attempted to model in AM as if each spline was the part of an edge loop, and I was planing on using the bias handles to get my desired cuveature. This didn't work out quite so well as I had envisioned. So, anyone have any good links to free or pay tutorials on AM modeling? Something that covers hard and soft surfaces (cars, buildings, etc. and…

hello all. hope everyone is doing well. i was wondering while im learning how to model, does someone who knows how to model, also have to also be good at animating? or vice-versa? like, say if youre the type of person who is "so-so" at modeling, but if someone gave you a pre-built rigged model, you know you could animate the heck out of it? or if you know you suck at or dont have the patience to animate, but would love to be down with a project just to build and model a character? is this acceptible that although a person is assigned a job doing either/or, knowing the other is not a requirement, i.e., and artist that gets paid to model doesnt need to know how to anim…

I'm trying to model a '50's style fedora similar to the one shown. The hat itself is little problem, but my challenge especially concerns the portion of the band circled in yellow. Would it be better to model this in geometry or as a (bump, normal, or displacement) map... I'm concerned that a map would make it less 3D than it is, though the actual "bow" on a fedora is pretty form-fitting in real life, it does have dimension and this photo shows it fairly well at the rear of the bow where it is obviously not "decaled" to the hat, but a seperate piece. [attachmentid=12783] Of course, since it would be part of complex scenes (with a person under it) patch cou…

sorting out weird patches i run into one that refused to get covered. then i realize this could have something to do with the shape of the piece; it could be interpreted as i kind of tube. and i know for a fact there's a page about this somewhere but i can't find it. what is the logic here; if i have a hole - well, two holes - with 4 or 5 CP's then it's not doable (=a patch) in principle; i need to plan around and model more to make the piece more of a mesh formation?

Hello, I'm coming back to Animation Master after a lapse of ten years. The version I have is 5, from 1996. What I want to do is to take a word and make it 3d, and then wrap it into a truncated cone, as shown in the attachment, which I've built by hand in CorelDRAW. Then I would want to apply texture and a bump map, so the letters look like they were carved from granite. If someone could give me a very broad rough idea of the steps that would be necessary it would be a big incentive to get back into this by updating to AM2007. I've looked at interface screenshots, and I can't see how you even bring type into the program, so I'm a little commitment shy here! :-) …

While working on my model (which is inside a project) I constanly used 'Save Project As', thinking I always have previous versions of my model if I dont like the current edition. Only now I realised that all project versions have the same version of my model. Is this how it should be? Maybe there is an option to have all models inside a prj file or smth?

Way back when I was in Viscom Class, and 1st learning about AM. the class went over to Lightwave 3D, and I fell in love with that app at that time. Since then I've com to realize that out of all the 3D Apps, (Bryce, XSI, TrueSpace, 3DSMax, Cinema4D, Houdini, flamingo, Anim8or, Z-Brush, Xara 3D etc..) that LW, and AM are the best, user friendly, short learning curve one out there. and I want to reteach myself about AM, since I really haven't messed with it in years now, I'm a newbie again. Hence I lent my copy of my CD with Animation Master on it to another classmate, (as classmates will do.) that (a few months later) dropped out, and we lost touch over the years. …

Just a quick question... I'm opening up the different models that come with A:M to sorta get a feel for how they're put together, and to marvel at how you can accomplish so much with so little using patches versus polys or even SubD surfaces. I am wondering, though, why is it that with some of the models (Kee Kat, the Rabbit and I think one other I was looking at), the eyes are sorta "sunken in" inside the characters' heads? I notice that when you bring them into Choreography, that's not the case. Only in the model view. Can someone explain why this is? Is there a specific reason for it?

Thanks for everyone who has responded to my questions. I really do try to read the fourms and figure it out myself before I ask - I just don't always get very far. 1. Can you lock an object so that you don't accidentally move it? Seems like my students are always moving the stage by mistake. 2. When in the camera view, I want to move an object up and down ( I guess that's the Y axis) and not back and forth. Can you constrain movement to a certain axis? I know I can go to the side view and move it up and down from there, I was just wondering if I can do it from the camera view. 3. Any advice on further understanding the nulls? Ok, I'm lost here. This is what I know. I'm using about 19 decals. If I add more, they won't show up in the final render. I can switch decals. So, in other words, I can delete a decal, and a different one in a different spot, it will still work. Here's the strange thing: when I use render lock mode, all the decals show up fine. So I can go past my "limit" and using render lock mode click the screen in choreography and all the decals appear just fine. I am going to try and post screen captures. Assuming I'm successful, here's what you'll be looking at. 1) the model un-rendered. 2). the model rendered using "render lock" mode. 3) the model rendered hitting the "rende…
