I made this for fun in my spare time at work. Our company builds water tanks. I did this one a few years ago, just recently got back into playing with A:M. Got another one started, hopefully it will work out in a couple of days. tank10.mpg

Here is a lesson in backing up your work. This is an old image I found of a whole group of characters I made for a project which died with the messed up hard drive they were stored on! :( Maybe someday I'll rebuild them, they were pretty simple...

Made everything in 5 days using version 11. Was my first character as well. That is 256 passes and took about 1 hour and 15 minutes to render and I know I probably could of gotten away with less passes but I was going to take a nap while it rendered so what the heck . Hope you all like it. Please let me know what you all think. Paul

Hi All, Attached is a project I started to see how far I could push Dynamics in AM. There are still some issues with it as can be seen in the attached vid. You really have to play with the settings and in some cases I found if I select Constraint (under Target) and try to change it to None, it does not always change....like it becomes stuck?? Also, when selecting "Attach to Parent" on or off in bones mode and after Dynamics is turned on...AM crashes Finally, odd things are being simulated, like Objects tend to gain energy after repeated collisions with another object. So far, it appears to work best for really simple stuff. Cheers, Euge…

Thanks to all that voted for the BUMP" animation in the mini movie contest! http://www.s1.hashmirror.com/ftp/pub/movie...nimovie3/02.mov Now on to the next stage, final tweaking. The market is children's television in the 4 to 6 year old range. I've gotten a lot of feedback from a bullpen of about 30 people. The following list is what they and I came up with. If you'd like to help me out, please add to, or subtract from the list. I'm looking forward to making this into a prime little spot. By the way, everything is built from the ground up, using the toys scene that comes with the A:M CD as inspiration. The top isn't actually spinning. I put ran…

Just some of the A:M projects that I have enjoyed working on over the past few years: (old link removed. See below for update). I hope to replace this with a properly planned showreel sometime soon. I'm working on a project that involves my character standing in place, sloshing the mud using his feet & legs. In the pic, you can see that I've used five bones to manipulate the surface of the mud. The four bones lying horizontally are all constrained to "aim at" the fifth center vertical bone with the "scale to reach" selection checked. It's also translated to an additional bone I've added to the characters calf region. Now when I move the characters leg up, the surface of the mud follows but it's consistancy looks more like glue than mud. I'm considering adding an additional bone to the "mud" model and assigning a "dynamic constraint" to it to give it a bit mo…

Just felt like making something this morning, so I put together this Indiana Jones-style fedora. Figured I'd stick it up here if anybody finds a need for one. It's definitely not to scale and hardly perfect, but I thought it came out okay and thought I'd share. Here's a turnaround: indyhat.mov And the file: indyhat.zip

i was going through ideas of different types of animated textures, and this one i though look cool, so i thought i would show it. http://www.vimeo.com/760537 i made the textures in After Effects, a color, bump, and displacement map, i also used the displacement map as a specularity map. heres the project, the maps should be in it, if not, i can upload them here. Well, I had an idea while I was out supporting the tabaco industry at work today. It was to make a short film of models made up with primitive shapes. I don't know if 3d shapes are primitive, but that is what i am doing, basic shapes, and such. So far I have done...........Arnold Squarezeneger......... [attachmentid=12366] I have started on Vin Diamond, as you can tell under the objects in the project work space, and still have to do Brooke Spheres, and rig of course, and I guess it would be good if I came up with a story line, and a script, and probably a setting for the script that I have not come up with yet, or the story line........... And man …

Meet Mr. Blocky. I want to do some animation using my own character design. This guy was thrown together and rigged pretty quickly. I have rigged him from scratch using the same type of constraints that Jeff Lew uses on his video. So far all I need to finish up are the mouth poses and he is ready to animate. What do you think? Happy Hashing!

I took a break from rigging Kong to work on another great ape. Avalanche Software donated the orangutan model to the extra DVD (and other models), but it had no hair material. So far this is what I have. I haven't done any grooming yet. Any "grooming" look you see is through the dynamic settings. Still need to adjust the length and density in areas and adjust the hair group. I'll probably never get it to look as good as Avalanche, but I'll certainly try. There's also a monkey which I may do as well. I don't know if I'll rerig him, but he's in desperate need of a hand gizmo.

So, I haven't done much modeling recently, but I decided to pick it up again, and boy, am I surprised at what I'm making! I've been working on the model for several days now, and will join my not so good looking NCC-1701, but here is a (mostly) chronological look at the NCC-1701-A to date (still not complete, but getting there) And something I'm particularly proud of is my warp nacelles, they were very very tricky as they look simple, but are a little more awkward once you begin building them: And this is where I am at now. The deflector isn't done yet (that's a popular question I've found) and I still have some piece…

Very old Greek pottery in the late 7th and 6th centuries B.C.E practiced something called "black figure", where they painted imagery with black glaze or "slip" on the red clay. A couple centuries later they reversed that to do "red figure" where they used the black to cover the negative space around the image they were making. After seeing examples of this work at a museum I wanted to try to recreate some of that look, including the numerous fractures they tended to have after being buried in a dump for 2000+ years. Thom is a cylinder wrapped decal. The break lines are a combiner material.

The theme here, for me, was a sort of political cartoon in CG. It's title is Heaven's City Desk It's purpose was twofold... a tribute to my Uncle, George Murray, and a tribute to the fallen heroes of the "Fourth Estate" from last year. Fourth Estate= Press, and these people died trying to report what was happening in the world to us. I'm looking for crits. This was my heroes contest entry [attachmentid=13694] Notes: I resized here for space conservation. It was the wrong pic I posted, but it said the "same thing" as the correct one below. This is what I meant to post, the differences are subtle, but it is the final. [attachmentid=13695] …

I'm trying to find the optimum lighting settings for this character. I've no problem with the keylight but the Fill and Rim wash out the shadow cast onto the ground. How can I fix this? Also, this will be a toon character, but when I render these settings in toon, it looks totally different. It seems the settings don't transfer. For example, the rim light doesn't just light the side, it also lights the front!

Hey, I'm taking random objects and and modeling them in A:M...ya know why? because Its summer and I have nothin better to do . (plus its fun) I just made a soap dispenser, but I cant make the right brass/gold color so I just kept it uncolored except for the bottom. I think I'm gonna end up making a still with the things I'm making too. I'm also making a new character, but I wanna finish it's hands and head before I show it. I have never uploaded a pic to this forum so i dont know if itll work, if it does then awesome if doesnt....then I'll try it again

I've updated my site with my last three misfires from digitalrendering.com's Animation Showdown, the four-hour animation race: Who's at the Door? I never quite got the rhythm of this one right. Doing more leading with the hips might have made it less floaty. Hug. The moderator warned that doing this with two characters would be too hard. Turns out he was right! Crawl. Why he didn't just step over that thing? These versions are re-rendered for better lighting. See them on my Showdown page.

John Burch and I have been collaborating on an industrial visualization project. John has done an excellent job, particularly considering his exposure to industrial automation was zero before he started on this project with me. John's website is http://www.lizardfire.com check it out, he has some great stuff there, and also consider him for contract work. This image is for an automation company. Their client wanted to see a virtual example of what the 2d drawing looked like. The work is meticulous and requires great attention to detail. David

So Old Man Willies is coming along. LiteFace is up and running (major victory). I've been experimenting with using hair for his eyelashes. Had it looking good in the modeling window, but when I tested how it behaves in an action I found that it doesn't fair so well. I looks like the base of the eyelash moves with the patch, but the hair tip stays put. So the question is, how do you set up a hair patch so that it will move properly when animated. this is the eyelash in the modeling window this is the action I want the hair look, tried a eyelash decal and wasn't happy, especially on closeups. So how to create the a hair system that will animate prop…

Hello All- I have been trying to make a basketball swish through a hoop with netting and do it in a dramatic way. Alas,..so far ..no success. I have embedded a project for anyone who wants to take a look. Basically I took a basketball backboard (from an old hash model library) and eliminated everything but the metal hoop and netting. Then I took a Basketball (also from an old model library) to use as the "deflector". Using Mark Weller's video tutorial on using the Sim cloth simulator I took his suggestion and used the very top row of cps in the netting as the "attached" part of the cloth so that the netting was stuck to the hoop. Before I even added …

poseexpress.mov Okay I thought using an expression to control a repeating action is great but how would I add a pose slider to vary that expression. I came up with simple idea in the example above I made a pose that controlled the scale of a bone not assigned any cp's I made a sine expression that scaled the y scale of the model over time but used the control bones scale value to control the effect of the expression The left model has the scaling expression effect turned down on the up cycle then set up for the down cycle The middle model has full effect of the expression for the whole cycle The last has about 30% of the expression effect for the whole c…

hi, i just posted in the general A:M forum but it seems i can´t post images there. Well here´s the render i mentioned w/ my makeshift area light. I think it looks alright but there are artifacts that bother me a bit, in the form of weird shadows in the forehead. However, i believe it´s the lighting since the model has already been smoothed out w/ porcelain and it´s articfact-less w/ the default chor lights. Any thoughts?

I started out with a single spline with several CP's connected to form a rudder shape. After selecting that closed loop, I extruded twice. Once done with extrusion, I wanted to stitch the sides together to create the side faces. On my first stitch, I noticed the distortion you see in the jpeg. Normally I see that with overlapping splines, but how can that be on such a simple shape? Two extrusions is all. Also, when I select a CP and pull it away, there is no other one hiding behind it - if that makes any sense. Any ideas?

Hey I am going to be doing some story boards today and then scan or "film" them with a webcam to get them into my pc, then edit them together w/ my narration in order to have a rough working draft of my film. As I finish a scene, I am going to splice it into the animatic, til the whole thing is done. I figure this will give me a more concrete idea of what I've got done and how much is left to do rather than try and just animate scenes at random. What I'm wondering is: what's the best way to put this together? Use something like premiere? I think I have an old version floating around. Can I just scan each image once and then do a hold on it? I reall…

I was experimenting with distortion boxes today, and I realized there is an older trick that I had never tried before. so I tried it! I scaled a parent bone and put it in a pose slider, and then I could control squash and stretch very easily. The only distortion box I used was one around the "nose" of the green character. Thre rest of the squash and stretch is done by scaling bones with pose sliders or just plain scaling them in the chor. What fun! My next project is going to have squishies!!! matt The file is a DIVX. sorry Apple users GooberJump.avi
