Thank many of the professinal modelers and animaters on here that have supported new users (like me) with help and downloads. Now I want to make a request. I'm asking can any one please make some woman action animations for the Thom model? Simple ones like walking, running and standing postures. Anything els possibly creative if you can.....

Usually before I mess around with things, I like to fully understand how things work... well, after awhile I finally decided to jump in and just mess with things in AM. I learned a lot from the experience so far, and it has been a ton of fun, so I hope to continue in the future. Anyway, here is a short animation of Thom doing some sort of umm... exercise or something. (more like a very crappy gymnast's routine). It didn't really start out with a plan any more specific than to Animate, so any storyline you think you might see... is an illusion. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, --Ross K. EDIT: Apparently it is possible t…

Heylo guys, I crafted this overnight and thought I might aswell show it to the world, so here goes. Had to use dr. divx to make it small and had to put it on Ftp to be able to "distribute" it. I used Thom and starwarsguys lightsaber in this flick. Link: www.jftp.frac.dk/ThomGoesPro.avi PS: I know his legmovement sucks, but this ain't the final version. I keep trying to render a new, tweaked version, but for some reason it renders in a really crappy quality, even though I'm using the same codecs, settings etc. etc.

I wanted to try out Emilio's sweeper plugin and one thing led to another... Thom is so willing. I had fun doing this and would like to polish it up, so any suggestions are welcome. I use the On2 codec as usual. Thom goes rolerblading!

Last year one of my benefactors got me Disney teacher Don Graham's "Composing Pictures", a very deep look at what makes images work. On of the techniques he talks about is "passage" where a band of color or value will cross what would normally be a shape boundary. One example he gave was this classic Chinese painting "Clear Weather in the Valley". you can see the sky color descends down through the whole picture even crossing over the sides of mountains. Here, it's like a low-lying fog. My other contest entry was an attempt to do something a bit like that with A:M. I made a set of flat planes for mountain tops and angled a volumetric effect to obscu…

I've started to explore walk cycles, in preperation for a project I may get to work on. This was created all in one day and is six or seven actions all layered over each other. I forget where the music comes from, but that's only there temporarily for entertainment value. Thom Walk Enjoy!

I haven't gotten these pants to survive the jump over the box like the shorts could, but they work well in a walk. LongPants_700.mov Although Thom is on a walk cycle, the pants had to be simulated for the whole range This was rendered with Jenpy's FastAO. AO really does help make things look "there". And now it's fast!

I don't post much of my work, mostly because I'm not very productive, but here is a character I am working on. He will be chased by another character in a 10 second video I want to put in front of my DVD of my daughter's middle school production of "Guys and Dolls". This guy represents the gamblers (I'm assuming that is obvious). I welcome all comments and criticisms. I have rigged him and teested him with a couple of actions and he looks OK. Thanks in advance, Scott Dice_Front0.tga

Got a sudden inclination to give this object a try... First test render with a simple sphere and a simple decal. Can you guess what it is? (Science Fiction buffs probably will...) I purposely made the seam face the camera for me to make sure the decal is on there correctly. I DID cheat a bit. Found that cylindrical mapping gives smoother results near the poles. The trick is to spherical map first, screen capture and use the capture as a rotoscope for sizing the cylindrical decal placement.

Here is a screen grab of the formula you need. The way I set it up is with 2 bones, one has the geometry (bone 2) and the other has the expression (bone 1). The expression is in an on/off pose for bone 1. Bone 2 has a roll like bone 1 constraint in a percentage pose, setting the enforcement to a spline interpolation method. The reason for the numbers that I used in the expression is that, at 1% of the throttle pose the prop will have a full rotation.

I added four cookie-cutter decals onto a model. Then I tried to have them dissapear. But in the rendered version their gone and the model is still there but in the choreography they're gone and the model's gone. So what am I doing wrong. I have included a prj file to specify. thunder_works.prj

Tightrope!

Well, it's showdown time again, and this time 'round the topic was Walking a Tightrope. Yow! Here's what I came up with: http://www.hash.com/users/zachbg/tightrope_sor3.mov 800K, Sorenson 3, 13 seconds. For those not in the know, the deadline for these showdowns (found at digitalrendering.com's forums, reg. required) is four hours, from finding out the topic to handing in the completed animation. My time spent on this was probably three and a half hours, because I had to pick my son up from nursery school halfway through. I wonder if that's a problem on feature films. Comments and crits welcome. As a further interesting point, the modeling of th…

Had a great time in the ol' Live Answer realm today. I didn't post this during the session but as a follow up here's an example of a model I'm currently using to test hair. Finding a lazy way to control hair length is my underlying goal but I know that sometimes the work just has to be done. As Robert mentioned during the session, an image map (specifically a decal) driving the length property is likely to be optimal. I don't know why I always stubbornly resist dong things the 'right way'. Instead of pushing forward with a decal I find myself manually adjusting and wishing I could use materials or patch images instead. In…

I've always been curious to see what other people's timelines look like. So here's a snapshot of mine aftere roughing-in an animation. The only thing I've keyed are the main poses and actions. Now I'll go back through it and refine the motion (a lot).

I wanted to know if there is a way to change the two colors of the timeline in project workspace. There is the white and off-white making it hard to tell the limitations of the choreography. It is difficult to tell the difference.

Here's a smattering of some of the images that have been rendering from WebRender on my computer. Please use your computer's spare time to render for the Hash Community movie, "Tin Woodman of Oz" (TWO), also. The WebRender installation takes only 5 minutes (and it's free). http://wiki.hash.com/index.php/WebRender Another movie, "Scarecrow of Oz" (SO), is in preproduction with a crew of 40. If you would like to be involved, simply contact me "martin@hash.com"

Tips for make big textures an small tutorial multi texture 1 - is important you use more than one texture 2 - i recomend minimum 6 layers for optimus result 3 - i recomend (Color Map + Displacement map + Normal Map + Bump Map + specular map + reflection map) 4 - the Color Map and Displacement Map are the most important, you dedicate more time at it 5 - make big textures take some time you needed pacient 6 - minimum 1024 x 1024 Texture Size , Recomended 2048x2048 Texture Size 7 - Dowload an read TECHREF.pdf (ftp://ftp.hash.com/pub/docs/ ) pages 60 to 67 8 - CrazyBump to make nice Normal Map 9 - 3DPainter is great help to make big textures

A thread in New Users got me started on this. As usual, a lot harder than I thought. Let me know what you think. The quest was for a semi-realistic tire. I think it is semi-realistic. It will bear up at the distance I think you would normally view a tire from. The perspectives from pictures, combined with how to flatten a half torus without having to then a paint banana shaped, regular pattern drove me nuts. Also, the subdivisions need to be regular, you can see what I did in the action within the project. Whatever. If I hadn't had the wonderful tutorial from William Sutton at Zandoria, I would not even had know what to try. What a great tutorial. If you w…

Some of you might remember the thread about the German WWII battleship Bismarck I started some months ago. After I finished Bismarck I accidentally came in touch with the author of the drawings I had used as referances and rotoscopes. He was at that time working on a book of Tirpitz for the Norwegian museum of defense. All ended up with me converting the Bismarck into Tirpitz to be used as illustrations for the book:) btw if someone is interested, here is a LINK to information about the book (with som samples) Here is a few personal renders for you to inspect: The first render features both Tirpitz and Bismarck, the others are Tirpitz only Let me know wha…

I'm doing something a bit different with A:M. I've filmed an actress in front of a green screen, and I'm compositing her into scenes created in A:M. This is the current state of a short prologue to the story. These are videos for the music of the band Gekko Projekt, but the idea is to make them more like a short film telling a story than like a traditional MTV video. I'd love to hear any comments or suggestions you might have. Here's the link. I don't want to go public with it yet, so I've set a password, which is "drpepper" (without the quotes). https://vimeo.com/99576675 -Vance

I use AM as a general 3d workhorse, so I though I'd show a couple of simple and very quick projects. I thought I'd put them into a single WIP thread so that people can ask any questions they may have, and because I don't think they'll be worth a thread each. Amway Business Centres.. total project time was 1 and a half days, although it wound up at two days when I needed to alter one of the render settings and had to redo a render. That's for the sequence shown and a global map animation showing the centre locations. The project is based around the final image of a man climbing a building, the rest of it was pretty much up to me. I started the project using newton p…

So I've been working on the main character for my first short, an old man with a long beard. I've been avidly following the recent threads on hair, and have wanted to use hair for this guys beard and mustache. I really wanted the hair quality, but the overhead of experimenting with the hair emitter, and rendering has me questioning if I should use hair or geometry to create the beard. So if using geometry how would I go about creating a beard that at least looks close? Below is a sketch of the target "look" and the current model with a geometry mock-up for the beard. The biggest issue is the ability to work the beard in such poses as in the sketch, as w…

There are many instances in a model, when you could simply stick one object into another to make it look like they are one. Take, for example, a wrought iron fence, or a lever sticking out of a machine. Another good example, intersecting pipes. When would you have to join the CP's and when could you get away with the cheat?

Hi all, I am experimenting with layers. The tractor is supposed to run between the right field-layer in the foreground and the left field-layer behind, wheras the farmhouse and sky are on an extra background-layer. One major drawback: Seems when I toonrender, I can`t avoid an outline around the layers or is there a way? I guess a workaround would be a cookie cut decal on a one patch plane? In fact that leads me to my main question: What really is the difference between a layer and a decal on a plane and which advantage and setbacks does each have?
