A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I have a little problem with the way i make things in A:M particularly around the face and head. I have trouble getting splines to meet so there don't appear to be "creases" . Like when working progressively from around the eyes to the rest of the face creases will apear an i have a hard time not getting them. it must be i have a bad work flow. Does anyone have any hints or tricks they use to get everything to come together right.

Old time A:M user here, Has Biased normals replaced porcelain as an option for smoother model surfaces in the current version of A:M? In the old days there was default/normal patch surfaces, which are great for most models, and there was also a Porcelain.mat that would average the surface for smoother surfaces that worked great for some other kinds of models. Maybe a cartoon baby, for example. They were both great and both had advantages and disadvantages. (Don't worry folks, I'm not trying to avoid good modeling technique). The technical manual says that Biased Normals is now the default. Does that mean there is biased and unbiased rendering available now? Or i…

A few months ago I read about a new title for A:M, I would swear that I once held it in my hands at the local book emporium. However, I can't find it by searching and it's not on the Hash site. Does anyone have any idea which book I am talking about?

Hi - Awhile back I posted asking if anyone knew a really good artist that could create a rotoscope drawing for a character - a couple people nicely responded and had some pretty good drawings they had done. I live out in California in the valley and happen to be up at Universal Studios and noticed they have an area set up with caricature artists, so I decided to have him do one and see how it came out. He is a very talented guy and it came out great. I am using it now to create a character, and it is working pretty well - I probably should have had him do a profile drawing as well. Anyway, I thought I would post his email and website portfolio if anyone is in ne…

I put the 2001 Skeleton rig in my model because I didn't want to start from scratch, but my model is a turtle. Everything would be wonderful if I had foot targets for what used to be the hands. How can I make the hands into feet that have foot targets. Does anyone know of a tutorial for a rig with four legs or can someone please tell me how to make the 2001 Skeleton work for four legs?

Hi, I got A:M 2002 back in...well, 2002 and I haven't used it much and kind of forgot about it. I have recently been re-inspired to learn it and I have some questions regarding the latest version and the bajillion updates inbetween. Considering how I never really made anything to speak of on A:M 2002, I'm kind of reluctant to buy the latest version without conquering the old one. So here's the questions: 1) Will the models I make in 2002 be able to transfer over to the latest version? 2) If I get the latest version will I have to relearn everything or is it the same as 2002 but with more features? 3) I've always had a problem with A:M 2002 shutting down on …

My question is, How can I make my personal videos (from video camera) as the backround to my animations? I just bought this program this week at a convention, and the demonstrator showed us an example that you can do it with this program. Thanks for the help...

I 've been using this software for a while but this just came up. Everytime I try to output my animation using something other than "final" as the quality setting, I get an unhandled exception, and then Animation Master closes. I tried reinstalling, but I still get the same message. I noticed this after I updated my version to 12.0v+.

I started to understand pathanimation a bit better by using a very simplistic project. I can slow the object down now by prolonging the chor-action. Also I can alter the speed of the object along the path with the ease-percenntages. But I find this rather indirectly, like an try-and-error-principle. There must be away to get an object to acellerate on a path from start to end at a mathematically exact constant pace I guess? And to steer it lets say go to a certain point on the path accelerating , then continue steadily to the next point and then slow down again till the end? Would you do that with expressions maybe or overlaying actions or mul…

Hi - I posted a question a few days ago about what to do when you have 6 cps at the end of and object (like a hand in that case), instead of just scaling the cp down to a very small size. I got some great responses on what to do with 6 cps, but can anyone suggest any techniques for 8 cps like the bear foot below? The scaling down of the cps would work fine, but in this case I have "hair" on the foot and it bunches up oddly when then cps are scaled in so close. Thanks again - Eric

Hey guys, I've been trying to import a quicktime movie as a rotoscope for sometime without success. The only real info I've found says to rightclick on the camera and select new rotoscope. It also says to change the file type to what ever I'm importing, but I never see that option. The video shows up in my choreography as black video, which I think means it doesn't read the codec. I have a MacPro, running OSX tiger, with quicktime pro. So I would think that my computer has the proper codec for Quicktime movies. I've tried many different compressors on the quicktime movie, Animation, Sorenson, and even None. Neither work. What I really want to do, is insert a model in…

Hello, I'm treating to render in Toon mode and I think I have put all the correct setting in the Rendering Options, Camera, and Model Surface Properties, so Lines are showed in renders but I have some Scale Compensation problem or something like that, cause when the camera moves near or far of the model, it seems like if the Toon line always maintain his... same width??? So when the camera is near, the lines show very "thin" and when the camera is far the line is very "thick", and... How can be possible??? Well, as I say I must be missing something cause it's simply not possible get a decent/coherent line all the time in this way, so... HELP! And thanks

Hi - I did a search and didn't really see anything about this question. I had a client to put it nicely "didn't really work out" so the new guy uses Lightwave and I was able to export the model as an .obj and that worked great. I created a number of pose sliders as face expressions of the character - is there a way to export these so this poor new guy's life will be a little easier.

hey all, I was having a problem exporting models to 3ds including textures, but finally i managed to do it successfully. The problem I'm facing now is that i want to pack all the decals used in separate jpg file into one image and then export the model with its pack textures so i can load it successfully because when i export my model, only one decal is used and the other are ignored, so exporting a solo texture for all the model will solve the issue. So is there a way to pack the texture in only one image. I've used the generate bitmap but it was unsuccessful. can someone help?

Hello, While working on a very basic choreography my front, side, back etc... windows are all black and do not display any geomerty. I've tried shift-z to centre the scene but still nothing. The camera and light views are fine. What gives? is it a camera clipping plane issue or what? Thanks in advance Mcutler

I downloaded the bevelled prims off Yve's site since for some of the work on my buoy I figured it would be simpler to take an existing primitive and work it over to get the structural members of the buoy that I need. I tried scaling the cube primitive to get a long, thin bar but I ended up with something that looks more like a dog bone. I don't think the bevels were reacting well to scaling. Is this something I would probably be better off modeling from scratch?

I used to use A:M way back when, I think it was around 98 or so. In fact, in Dallas, I started a user group that met at my house from time to time. (Any of you guys still around? Larry? Ken? Jerry?) Since then, I've gotten out of experimenting and mucking around with 3D, but have lately been re-interested in it. Currently I'm waiting for my new A:M 2006 to arrive, and while waiting, I've been looking through the tutorials, reading the forums like crazy, all the while my anticipation building and building. I was curious about something, and I hope this doesn't come across as too stupid a question. But say I have a model, I've rigged it, created some actions/po…

I've animated a bottle being thrown through the air and to animate it spinning end-over-end, I changed the rotation to Euler. that wasn't working so I went to change it back, but my options are only to change it to vector or quaternion, and neither of those options appear to create keyframes. How do I change the rotation back to default so I can keyframe the rotation?

Ok, I am having a hard time with this one. I'm trying to make a cut out of a person and decal them on a plane. 1. I cut the image out in photoshop.(not sure what is the best for saving) 2. I want to put the person on a cutout that is the exact shape of the decal. (I'm using it as a prop) 3. Do I have to model the shape, which is taking forever, or can I put the decal on a plane, and get rid of the white background?

Hi everyone! I am making a Lego Star Wars movie. I need help! Could anyone upload a lego star wars model up here on the forums? This would be very helpful! If you are willing to help, I need a lego battle droid and a lego super battle droid. I also need a few lego ships from the clone wars. Any of these would work just fine. Particulary the fighters. Thanks!

I have set-up a material Library for texturing the objects in "Tin Woodsman of Oz". If you would like to help get all of these objects for the movie textured, I could really use your help! All you have to do is drag and drop materials from a library onto groups in models, and then tweak the parameters on the material shortcut. It is just a matter of choosing an appropriate material and tweaking the color, basically. This is a good opportunity to learn and to contribute to making the things ready to render. If you are interested, send me an email and I will point you to where to get started. Thanks,
