After seeing Soulcage's wonderful renders and lusting after GPU rendering speeds, as well as some of the non-character tools in other packages I finally spent a couple of days on the export and render pipeline from AM to Blender and it's cycles GPU renderer. Bearing in mind that my knowledge of blender is minimal at best, it was surprisingly easy. I exported the model as an obj file and then exported the matching mdd. In Blender I imported the same. turned on the cycles renderer and pressed go. RomanJump.mov

Must there be only one? The participation for this contest is the highest that I can recall in a very long time here. Not only that but I think that most of the entries in this year's mascot contest are really very good. I counted ten entries that I think could easily be justified as the splash screen for A:M v18. So why use just one this year? Why not change it where the new A:M uses a random (or cycled) splash screen at each start-up? I'd like to see this because I enjoyed so many of the entries. I can't say that only one should be the "winner". I'm not suggesting handing out 1st place to everyone but if the top 5 placing entries this yea…

Working in V17g, under OSX 10.68 Revising last weeks brief, checking the mesh penetration glitches. It was going well, doing quick regional renders to test position, suddenly, this happened, Since then the render times have gone through the roof. For example a 9 second segment that was taking 2 seconds per frame to render, has gone out to several minutes per frame. Can any one point me to what the problem might be and, most importantly. How to fix it ? regards simon

When a light’s shadow option is set to ray trace, “render as lines” splines do not cast any shadow. Is this an error (that should be reported) or is it a (missing) functionality?

Animating a 100metre sprint in V17g Made the mistake of not moving the model bone with each step ( decided not to make the same mistake with the runner in the next lane ). However, as I procede, the model bone seems to keep growing in the Y axis, or rather the rotate handle on it does. Is this normal ? A consequence appears to be that, when trying to select a rig bone, it has become easier to select the model bone by mistake and more difficult to select the rig bone without having to use the PWS. This is the bone on frame 00:00:00 And this the same scene 5 seconds or so later, Notice the growth ? The track is to scale, so the handle seem…

Hi Guys Big favor to ask: I am at work and won't be in front of my home computer until 17:30 / 5:30 PM CST -6 GMT If I submit a trial request at that time could I get an answer by 19:00 / 7:00 PM? I know its a bit much to ask but I don't have any music projects lined up this evening and it would be an awesome opportunity to get the A:M bug Thank you!

Thinking that it could be a nice thing if the project workspace in A:M was color coded, as to make a visible distinction between base parameters and animatable parameters. What do you think?

This is a puzzle for me and I really need the answer. Concerning mdd import export. When you import an .mdd file, does it only work on an .obj model import.......as a prop for instance. Or can you import an mdd and have it work on the hash model. This is what I use to think: 1. In exterior App I can export a model as an obj and import it into hash via the obj import wizard.(results in a hash model version) 2. In exterior App also export an mdd file with motions. 3. Import the mdd file onto the new hash model created in step 1. HOWEVER....I can't get this to work. What's more puzzeling is that I can export an mdd from a Hash model in A:M. Bu…

Hi - I'm trying to get my trial version A:M v.18 up and running on my Macbook Pro OS 10.9.4. I followed all of the download instructions in the email I received from Hash accepting my request, renamed the downloaded license "master0.lic" per the instructions, and placed it into the folder next to the application, yet when I try to open A:M, I'm greeted with a dialog box requesting an Activation Key. I have been using A:M15j on an older Mac and want to try the newest version of A:M on new hardware before I decide to buy. Can someone please advise me how to address this issue. I've contacted tech support by email and tried by phone, both to no avail. Thank you.

Does anyone have insight into this? Here is the outline of an X I have made. All the corners are Peaked CPs. X_outline.mdl If I use the Y key to add a CP on a spline, that should be a default CP with zero bias. If I add a CP on one of the short splines ( see A) and smOoth it with the O key it behaves as I expect, the two new spline segments are as straight as the old one. If I add a CP to one of the long legs of the X and smOoth it, it gets a twist to it (see B ) The default behaviour for a CP with zero bias is that its bias handle should be parallel to a line drawn between its two neighboring CPs but that is not happening in case B. Any …

I was resplining an "A" that didn't come out of the FontWizard quite right and have created what should be a legal four-sided patch... four CPs, connected by splines and not all on the same spline... and yet it doesn't fill in. If I copy just those four CPs and paste them to the right they do fill in but not if they are part of the whole mesh. Anyone know what is wrong? (This is not a Hide Backfaces problem) Fixin A.mdl

I made the transition to WIn10 on my PC at the beginning of June and installed A:M ver.18.0m shortly there after. I've had almost no teething problems for the last two weeks but this occurred after yesterdays' Windows update which may just be a coincidence. This is a screen grab of a realtime render and a good approximation of a final render. This is a screen render in Render Lock mode. This is a screen render in Render mode. I upgraded my Nvidia graphics drivers and re-installed ver. 18.0m without solving the problem. This doesn't happen in ver. 17. I see that Hash Reports is currently broken so I'm open to suggestions.

I know that AM does not directly support either, but we all use other apps besides AM. Which do you figure would be more beneficial in the long run, CUDA support or Open CL? It looks like both Davinci Resolve and Fusion support both, as well as Adobe Creative Suite but Open CL seems to have a bit more 3rd party support. I'm looking at a possible video card upgrade and having a hard time deciding between AMD and Nvidia.

Which version of AM was the 1999 year version? Was that 8 or 9? I remember 9 as being the buggy version, and the 1999 year version is the most recent one I have that still supported Win 95/98 and NT. I've been planning on experimenting with an older version of AM in a vm on Linux and Android and I thought those versions might be lightweight enough to manage it, but still have a more modern feature set (in terms of having unibody models, hooks, 5 point patches, etc).

Having some trouble with renders using Ambient Occlusion. This was rendered with 5 passes and Ambient sampling set to 100%. Its a reflection in a glass surface but, I've had similar troubles in non reflective surfaces too, although this is the most extreme example so far. This is it without ambient settings The ambient render is VGA because its taking a very long time to render at 1080. Can anyone kindly suggest a cause and possible cure for the problem ? Thank you simon

I'm working away on a project which will combine AM animation with hand drawn animation in TVpaint. I will post some interim results in the WIP space later. To make it easier at the drawing stage, I've started rendering out at UHD resolution.. Unfortunately, it is taking a long time to render each frame, between 7:30 and 10:00 hours. Thats not a big headache, although it would be better to shorten the time, as I can get on with something else while waiting. However, what is of concern is an inconsistency in the renders. These are png conversions from TGA originals Notice the shadows and the lighting, it is almost as if someone stepped in front of the light so…

I put in a trial request, sent off my host id etc, a few days ago but haven't heard back. I've bought a Windows tablet with a Wacom Digitizer for drawing and working on when I'm not at my main computer. Photoshop works great on it and I've seen a video of somebody using Z-Brush on it but I know A:M doesn't always play nice with Intel onboard graphics and want to test it before I get a license. I'm gonna be on a plane for 7 hours this coming Saturday so was hoping to tool around on A:M during the flight.

LC Baby F.mdl TLC S3 Baby 003C.act Trying to finish The Learning Curve but, having a lot of problems. Slowly sorting out most of them but, this one is proving difficult to trace. Because it started with an old model, a the finger poses were done using skeletal mode. I know now, thats not the way to go but, not then. The scene was animated as as an action and i seemed to go ok until I checked the right hand. The fourth finger ( the pinkie ) was completely skew wif with the three bones at complete variance to each other. Went back and corrected the model, and the settings in the pose controls but, when the corrected model is used the variance i…

Hello All, This is probably easy for most, but I haven't done this on the Mac version for a while. It's always consistent on the PC version How do I import a DXF, 3DS, or OBJ in the modeling window in v19? I need to make MDL files. I've already decimated them with MeshMixer to make them less dense. On the PC it's always the same way - r-click in the modeling window, choose plugins -> import -> and the model type ...easy as pie On the Mac version there is no plugin choice in the r-click menu of a model or the choreography. All I get is the standard import sub-menu. In the old days it was a 3rd party plugin that you had to download and pla…

Hello All- Trying and experiment and not sure if it is possible. I have a cube with another smaller cube making a Boolean cut inside the large cube. I also have a blue cylinder sticking out of the cube (like a pipe sticking out of a wall). I would like the blue cylinder to be unaffected by the Boolean cut.... but as you can see by the picture, the Boolean cut effects everything (notice hollow area on blue cylinder). The question is, ....is there a way to make a Boolean cut selective to only one object in a scene, while ignoring other objects inside the "cut area"? (I tried playing around with different bone hierarchies but, no luck yet.) Thanks for a…

Hello, I am in the process of testing bone stresses with AM. I do fairly empirical tests and it lacks efficiency in some cases because I do not really understand what the constraints correspond to in terms of parent / child links. Is there a list, or a table summarizing the context of action of each constraint? It would be much more efficient for me! thank you in advance

The function of "Clone CP Weights" is to copy the CP weights from one model to the exactly matching CPs in a target model. Question: What is the purpose of the checkbox for "Reassign target model CPs"? If I uncheck it, no CP weights get changed, which is the same as not using the plugin at all. @yoda64 I did watch the tut by @itsjustme but I didn't see it address that questions.

I have a model of double swinging doors with bones and poses that I want to import multiple times into a new model. After the import, I can select all the CP's and translate and rotate them into my desired positions but the bones stay anchored at their imported positions. Is there a way to move the entire model, bones and all, within a model? I'm fairly certain the answer is "No" but I thought I'd ask before doing the grunt work or installing them in the chor.

I've been "bit" more than once by the way the Darkness attribute works when a light cast shadows. I know why the variable is there; it's a way to fake ambient light filling in the shade. But I have a problem with the way it affects specular highlights. It still lets them through, just attenuated. The specular highlight is faking the reflection of the light source in the sphere. Even if the shadow darkness is 10%, that "reflection" still shouldn't be visible. I have no idea whether it's possible for Stefen to fix this in the code but it would be a nice improvement.

Hi, another question for you. I've been using the 2005 XP version of AM since well ..... 2005 lol. It's treated me well and I really have no complaints about it ... other then the typical slow rendering and not being able to use it on a new computer. The question is whether I should buy the newest version? I looked at the Hash website and the program looks basically the same. Are there enough upgrades and improvements to make it worth it for a casual user? I'm kind of cheap and don't want to buy it unless it's really worth it 🤔. Also, are the models I've created with my 2005 version compatible with the newest version or would I have issues? Thanks in advance…

Hey guys, I don't know if this is a bug and worth reporting, but just recently I've noticed objects aren't staying where I tell them to be. Let me explain, I've been building a throne room and I want a row of pillars running down the centre of the room. I've positioned a pillar and then to make sure the next one lines up I go into the properties, get the x co-ordinate and enter into the next pillar. I repeat this for say the next 5 pillars with just the z co-ordinate changed. So here's the weird thing. Say I set all the pillars to x=90 all along the row. If I then click on say pillar 2 its x co-ordinate may have shifted to say 89.89 or 90.12, just a random shift to t…

Hi, It's unfortunate that AM changes the windows display settings...V14 did not but I guess for some reason V17 has to? I thought AM set them back upon exiting but for some reason I stuck with out the 'transparency' of the window frames (whatever that is called). This should be a trivial point but I guess I've gotten spoiled. How do I change them back? Cheers, Rusty

Does anyone have a Thom Model or anything with the 2001 rig constrained to the basic BVH motion data? Constraining a character to BVH data has been on my list of things to do for quite awhile now and since I haven't got around to doing it yet I'm hoping someone already has one set up and ready to go. I'll post any Actions I modify from the BVH data to the 2001 rig in the A:M Exchange forum. Now that Robert has clued me into Baking Actions as a means to reduce the complexity of animation I'm all set to do some pose ripping. Alternately, if anyone has any character constrained to BVH data I'd be interested in testing that too.

Working on the Bear model and trying to set up the cp weights. Two things occur to me. One, is it possible to do all the weighting for one side then mirror it to the other side, as it is with the "Mirror Smartskin" option ? Two Is it a Mac quirk or, when selecting the bone in the weighting window, for example Right Bicep geometry, the bone named in the box below could be the Left Knee Fan bone. It is then necessary to scroll through all the bones to find the one you want ( and there are a LOT in the 2008 rig ). It does get a bit wearing after awhile. regards simon

Working away today on the Ghosts idea I keep getting a recurring problem with the values settings for a chor. Working in V18B When the chor was set up initially it had an image sequence 00:19:20 frames long. The chor defaulted to that value and was saved as such. Further along, the image sequence has been deleted from the project, the chor resaved as something else and, no matter how many times I reset the length to 00:05:00 and save it afresh, when reloaded it has defaulted back to 00:19:20. It has happened about 10-15 times today. I'm getting close to ranting !!! I've got used to the fps defaulting to 30 and the rotate to 5 but the changes in the …

Been a bit distracted recently by other work but, trying to get back into finishing Ska Lake properly. One of the things it was intended to do was to test the models.
