A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Need some help with decals. All of the decals tutorials use photoshop pro but I have paintshop pro. I would like to use the eyes from Miki model on my model. Here is a shot of my anime face model(center). The left model was a modified face from Miki model. I remade the face so it is easier to rig. But since the eyes are spherical and not cylinders and I am missing a step or two in applying the decal I have been having problem applying the decal

Hi, I'm trying to make this model's mouth, but as you can see on the left side, it sorta dies down to a grey-er shade, I'm trying to keep it as look-alike as much as possible, is there a way to, say, start as a color and have it slowly change into another at some point? Another thing, I don't necessarily know how to use Photoshop, nor do I have any drawing talents whatsoever. Latent or potent. And rather than draw a mouth, eye, anything really that isn't 3D and make it a decal on a model, I basically just draw it with splines, render as lines and add colors to it. I've been doing this for a while and I wanna know if it's frowned upon, for lack of a better term, …

Hi - my next practice model is going to be a Tucan, and I have searched all over for pictures - and found some great ones, but can't seem to find any with their mouths open, to where I could see what the inside of their mouth looks like. Any Tucan experts out there. Does anyone happen to know if they have a short, small or long skinny tongue? Any good pic links would be appreciated. There was this link - it looks like a long skinny tongue, but not sure if it was something he was eating... Pic of Tucan w/ Mouth open Thank you - Eric

For those who want a professional looking script, ScriptMaker is a pretty good tool even if it annoyingly attempts to send you to its creator's site everytime you close it. But thats the price one pays for the free version. The storyboard tool, SLang, is also worth checking out. http://www.freefilmsoftware.co.uk/

Hi! I'd like to make a material, if possible, that looks like regular square tile. Some type of material that has a grid structure with pattern that looks like standard bathroom tile and grout. I'd like to make a bathroom tile that catches light the way that real tile does. Can anyone point me to a tutorial on how to make a tile material, or point me to a repository of these, if they exist. Any help would be much appreciated. Tim

Each year for the past few years the New Users Forum has ran a raffle. This year there is no \'New Users\' Forum per se and the raffle is changing a little. The goals of the raffle are threefold: 1) Encourage New Users to join in the community 2) Encourage completion of the exercises in the manual (The Art of Animation:Master) 3) Get into Animation:Master! My plan is to run three raffles. You can win more than one but how likely is that? First raffle will be a $50 gift certificate at the Hash Inc online store. (My recommendation... a SIGGRAPH video!) Eligiblity requirements: - Must be a 2007 subscriber (Oz characters on the CD) - Post in…

Hi - I made a military gorilla model and put together a quick animation of him shooting a gatlin gun, and to make it more realistic wanted to have a gun "fire" effect at the end of the 6 barrels (although a gorilla w/ a gatlin gun isn't the most realistic thing to begin with . Does anyone have a sample of one I can play around with or know of a tutorial for "gun fire"? I can probably run through the smoke and fire tutorial again and figure it out from there, but I was looking for something more specific. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - Eric

I've tried making decals the same size and larger than the object I'm trying to decal and then fitting the decal down to size to try and make my decals not look so pixelly, but it doesn't work and I'll like to make some close up shots of what I'm trying to decal, but the quality doesn't seem to be very good. Is this a problem with the format or is it just a down side of the program? http://fc02.deviantart.com/fs24/i/2007/361...ct_by_neomi.jpg[/img] (The actually image I used for the decal is a little big, but I've tried it other ways too.) (On a side subject, is there someway I could possibly...."paint" my model with an airbrush or something in AM…

[edit] I meant IK. I always get them mixed up. I'm so use to just turning on IK that I forgot how to do it on the 2001 rig. I thought all I needed to do was to use a "translate to" and "orient like" constraints for the hand bone but it's not working. After constraining the hands to a null, when I go to move the hips, the hand bone stays locked but the other bones in the arm continue to move pulling the mesh of course. I'm trying to create an animation of rabbit turning to sit in a chair. He's reaching back to grab the arms of the chair to support himself as he settles into the chair. I want to set the FK there so the hands are locked to the arms of the…

Hello everyone! Lately I was looking around the hash pictures to see how astounding these modelers can make such 3D images look so real. (See pictures below for examples) I know how the lighting works as to making a room illuminated but how do the artists make things look soft and realistic? I really am not sure how to do it but do the artists use a certian surface texture to catch the light or do they simply soften the light up to make it bounce? Anybody know the answer or can show me some tutorials around that can help me on this topic? This is so cool

There are many dilemmas we face as we try to learn any given subject. Animation is no exception. Where should we focus our attention? How much about a given subject should we learn? How many processes must we master in order to reach our goal. The questions you ask and the solutions you discover will vary based upon your goals. To the animator Lighting a scene for instance is often a secondary or perhaps even tertiary goal. But if you are the one who will eventually light your own project its still a very important thing to learn. Animation is our primary focus here in the forum. But others aspects are important too. Should you try to learn i…

I am so glad I finally realized that there was a forum! I got this program about a year ago and I am still really struggling with it. I cant get my head around the keyframes etc... I suppose my biggest problem is that when for example I try to make a character move lets say two points of a triangle and then play it back, the chacter just seems to gradually move from his starting position to his finishing position in the shortest way possible. O.K. maybe that wasn't such a great explanation... ummm... when I... ummm... I cant think of another example, but I really need some helpas the instruction manual doesn't really have what I need. Thank you! Oh by the…

Downloaded v15 to replace my old v8.5 and found I can't use it because it is slow on my machine. For example, if I click and drag the bounding box of a character in choreography mode the move happens a few seconds after I released the mouse button. So, just as a check and before inflicting unfair injury upon my computer's innocence gland, I reloaded v8.5 and did the following; I set up a scene involving a character standing in front of a photograph and did a quick render with both versions. Time to render with v8.5 is 31.44 and v15 is 51.0, or near twenty seconds longer all things been equal. It would appear then that v15 is near twice as resource greedy as v8.5. A search…

Hi - this is odd. I created a character - and put a bone structure in him - tested him in the resolute walk and he worked fine. I turned off the IK Let Setup to smartskin him - did that at several joints - brought him back to the main screen and turned the IK Leg Setup back on. Now when I bring him into an action or chor it is acting as if the IK Leg Setup is not on... when I pull his hips down to the ground his legs remain straight and the whole character moves down. Anyone know what is going on here, I have never had this problem?? Thanks for any help- Eric

HI! Now that I have my v15.0 Subscription , it seems that I have found new energies (or I think so...) to continue with Animation:Master after some weeks of... rest? So (of course) the first thing I have wanted to try is that NLE posibilities but it seems that any video file I treat to import is consider as a static image, I mean, one frame... and I have tried with several video files and changing all that timing parameters into the Rotoscope property, so... I don't know if something is broke or if I am really missing something weird... but I remember that in some v15 Beta I was able to import a video file, drag it into a Camera placed in a Choreography and can play…

In the Hash online Store, I plan on upgrading to yearly subscription. It will be a yearly part of my Christmas from my wife. I also will spend an additional 50.00 dollars in the store? Should I buy the 2005 dvd or 2006 dvd. My wife originally bought AM off of e-bay. It did not come with the hard copy of The Art of Animation Master, so Should I buy it and the The techinal reference guide which totals 50.00 as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hello all, I recently found my old A.M. 8.5 CD and manual and after much hesitation because I remember A.M. as being somewhat addictive, decided the give it a final whirl in the computer before making a donation to a Salvation Army charity sale. Mistake and here I am again but it struck me that AM might be used to create visual works combining traditional art and CG. About me includes that I am a 'middle-aged white male', I live down-under in Australia in the hills west of Sydney, I earn a living painting murals and have a degree in communications recently obtained having nothing much to do these past few years. Look forward to sharing my born-again experience wit…
