Here's a technique for quickly laying a surface texture over an irregular object without first needing to decal it. The various projection map types work well for regular-shaped objects like sphere's, planes and cylinders. For irregular rounded shapes a projection mapping type which is based on the surface normal is often a better solution. AM doesn't currently have this option but for stills you can use the environment map to project a texture. Just add an environment map material and select an image. A spherical projection is ideal because it avoids pinching at the poles, but even simple photographic textures work well. On larger flat areas the texture will stre…

So, I'm jumping in and starting modeling on a short for submission in a film festival Film Festival Topic Discussion. The movie will be a Christmas Story of sorts. The main character is Old Man Willies. I started on his head..made one goof after another, then decided to use Sire Nigel as a starting point. After beheading Nigel, I then started to push and pull control points to get the look I was looking for. Here he is: crits please.

Hi This is one of the first projects I did in 2000 with animation master. I am trying to get a reel together for my website and thought it would make a good intro. I did a new render of it with ao. You can see here the improvement in me and a:m over the years. I atached the old and new one. 3dfroglogoold.mov 3dfroglogonew.mov

Hey Guys, This is one of these "good from far" deals. I noticed that there aren't a lot of realistic cars available in AM and so I did this as a test to build my modeling skills. I really didn't do justice to the vehicle as I simply slapped a decal on for the lights and didn't really care much about the materials and stuff. I didn't even add door handles. I am hoping my next one will be better. I really learned a lot by modeling this car. This one was done strictly with rotoscopes and a lot of artistic shortcuts. I think the easiest thing for me was to start with the grill at the front and work outwards. I also used another technique where I q…

I am playing around with spotlights (klieg) and the source they come from. I made a box with a small translucent dome in the front of it. Inside the box I put a telephone - all for experimentation purposes only. In an action window I put a "bulb" light source in the dome and a klieg just in front of the dome. The klieg has volumetrics turned on to see a nice beam coming from the box. The illusion is to make the viewer believe the beam is eminating from the light source in the box through the dome to the outside. The dome has glow turned on. When I do a Q render in the action window, everything looks pretty good - the telephone can be seen throught the translu…

I'm working on a still, not an animation. I double checked, and there is no change over time in this still. All I am trying to do is render a semi realistic pine branch in a scene. Since I want to smooth the whole scene out, I'm initially using a 9x pass. The problem is the pine branch. There is obviously something going on that is causing this, I'm just not seeing what I'm doing wrong. Compare this to a TWO scene with a pine tree that has no blurring, but I bet it does have multipass? There is no motion blur or focal length change in the camera setting. Edit: After playing around with the hair material and not getting anywhere, I deleted it and created a…

This is a sphere off the cd with a simple gradient combiner material applied. I added pose sliders to the threshold and start and end points of the gradient and the transparency of one of the attributes. I was trying different settings with simple colors. To demo what they do I changed the sliders to different values every 10 frames with no real pattern and rendered a quick qt I'll post the project in next response grad.mov

It's been a while since I posted anything in this area. Here is a clip of a case we have been working on for a long time. The Lawyer had to go off for military duty, so it was on hold. We were not happy with the vehicle interaction from the image perspective we had, so we decided to try a different image. Originally I had modeled the environment from a satellite photo and was able to use it for multiple views in Live action. It was a compromise all around. I decided to model the environment to suit the image, which results in strange looking modeled topography, but looks right in the final product, which leads us to where we are today. The …

Here is a screenshot of the place in the Property panel where you can swap your model in the chor for another model. At the very lease, both models must have the same bones and bone naming convention. If the first model uses an animation rig, the replacement should have the same rig installed.[attachmentid=12459]

We have a case we're working on where bottles inside the vehicle served as a distraction to the driver. My 16 year old son, modeled this bottle. I don't know if there was any fluid in the bottle (although one would think that if it was a distraction it must have). He'll need to figure that part out. I have a klieg shining out of the side of the sub that casts these wierd beams. I just want a smooth diffuse beam. Tried rendering with multi pass and without - both show same funky beams. Tried volumetrics on and off, no difference. Anyone? There is also a plain bulb in the wheelhouse which is not doing what I want. I want the bulb to dramatically illuminate the inside of the wheelhouse with a good amount of light shining through the bulb windows but not through the rest of the hull. Any suggestions?

Is there a plugin or add on that allows you to print the PWS and its contents? For example I have a character with several decals and maps and settings that I would like to save in print form. I am saving all this information to prevent data loss. I have backups on several machines and back up drives but I am old fashion and would love to create a notebook with all the characters and sets and props information. Steve
