Hey Everyone.... I was hoping to avoid a boolean here. Is there a way to cut a circular opening in the side of a tube in A:M without using a boolean operation? Thanks so much for any suggestions.

One of the things I like about A:M is how we can develop our own approaches to things and extend the tools that we already have. Considering recent discussion on hair I thought I'd explore some of the area I hadn't pressed into yet with hair based on splines shapes. One of the primary reasons to use particles for hair is to gain some dynamic capability and to prevent intesections and pass throughs of the hair. With geometry based hair one approach to would be to use Simcloth to prevent the inter-penetration of each hair. Attached are a few of my tests as proof of concepts: Further refining the geometry and adding patch images or decals of hair to the actu…

Same model in both left and right images but better (IMO) textures, lighting and setting; ten years between renders. I'd be willing to bet there's nothing in the 2013 versions that couldn't have been done in 2003, it just took that long to motivate myself to sweat those details.

While awaiting a render I thought I'd try an idea for the car chase sequence. I've taken some low res targa photos of the lego houses and mapped them onto four patch planes to composite within the multi plane chor option. The question is, how do I get it to cut out the space were the windows are ? Heres an example of one of the files. Green_01.tga I cut out the spaces were the windows were and left it transparent in TGA format. When rendered it shows the gap as a flat white ? Is there a way around that ? regards simon Apologies here is a jpg version of the same file

A brief test using SimCloth for Autumn leaves... YouTube version: BooH264.mov UPDATE... here is a shaded wireframe render of the full cloth simulation that takes place before the rendered portion above. Although "Show backfaces" is ON, the cloth patches only show their decal on one side in shaded mode. Not sure why. Here is one of my characters for an upcoming project. His name is Pana-boon and he is a very hungry, childish bear. Besides only modelling half, and I know he needs paws, feet, eyes, not being done, etc. I'm looking for input about proportions, splinage for animation, rigging, etc. I will be covering him with the new version 11+ hair and rigging him for animation using the standard Hash 2001 rig. Any thoughts or do you see any problem points that may cause headache later in production? What about the overall character design? He will be a mixture of a children's bear / realistic hair with a styalized look. IF that makes sense? Some where between cartoo…

I'm tapping into the old caverns of the brain and I think I remember there being a demo movie out there that was on one of the original A:M demo reels called "Blocks" or "marbles" or something like that. It was a movie that had a bunch of marbles riding down roller coaster tracks the a block trying to do the same and smashing through a wall. Does this ring a bell with anyone and if so where could that be found? Thanx

Hi. I'm working on a lip sync segment and I have a question on how others do the syncing. I stared with 3 +/- mouth poses, smile/frown, open/closed, and ooo/aaa, then used these to make the 9 Preston Blaire phonemes. After creating the dope sheet, I found it took a lot of tweeking to get it looking good and I got realy confused trying to adjust all the channels. What I ended up doing is not using a dope sheet and just animating to the sound track using the 3 basic mouth poses. This worked better and was much faster; lesson learned. I am just wondering how others do their lip syncing.

This is a story I have been thinking about for a few days now. I've noticed that some people would be interested in participating in a short team effort. Well, that's the reason I'm posting this at such an early stage in the development....if you like the story and want to make a well animated(hopefully) short, drop me an email. Either way, I'll be making this short and posting updates here whenever I have them. Another reason is to get an unbiased view of the story. If anyone can think of ways to improve the story, put down your ideas in this thread. I'm willing to entertain anything. Without further ado here's what I have so far. I've even got storyboards for the f…

Here is a director's chair I built the other day. I found a free wood working project with schematics! No really! I used the diagrams for the wood working project and traced in A:M. Cool way to test out wood working projects I guess. I also used Jeff Lee's fantastic web based sky light rig gizmo! That thing rocks! Anyone needs a director's chair I will post it somewhere... it doesn't fold up though. Vernon "!" Zehr

Before I start my final rendering of this project I'm working on, I'd thought I'd see what some of you think about toon lines, with or without.... I've noticed that smaller resolutions yield not-so-great results while larger rez images or movies bring more precise results concerning the toon lines that is. Attached loop of a car I am working on for CrimeBomb... I am looking for a Hasher named Charles Cronley. About a year ago Charles and I traded CAD data for Mustangs, I finally took a look at his dense 'paint-only' mesh and decided it was a perfect test for the DISTORTION BOX tool and this is what I have come up with. Just wanted to let Charles know I am using it if he has any objections... I added lights, glass, mirrors, wheels and interior (WIP) I plan to make poses for door and hood openings, steering, suspension, exaggerated distortions for cartoony takeoffs and handling, and an action for wheel spin with stride-length. Then I plan to use it extensively as a …

Hi guys - A few yrs ago me and a team was working on a video game for our portfolio.. The game is a first person shooter which did not get of the ground due to some problems with export between different programs amoung other things. But we were able to get some of the models into the engine. I was responsible for the environment and the villans (bad guys) also for texturing the entire game..... I was going through my old stuff and I found some of the old games mods that I modeled in A:M back in 2001.....I thought I would share them with you..... this shot is a basic model render of the mods, the very first concept of the mods.. From paper to 3D...

Well, here goes... Below is an 11-second lipsync test I did for a personal project I'm working on, called "Ebon." The dialog in this clip is from a 2-3 minute scene I'll start work on once I build the rest of the characters and the set. This is both my first model ever as well as my first animation ever, so it's not all it could be, but that's okay--this isn't a portfolio piece, just an excuse to teach myself the Hash interface and to suggest what the final animation might look like. [Addendum 7:40am - preview image:] About this clip: The dialog comes from my own script, with voices provided by friends. The background was Photoshopped from a…

In May 2004, I sponsored a contest among select musicians to compose a unique theme for D.Joseph Design. Dane Walker composed a theme closest to my desires and very pleasing to my tastes. This animation, as company identification, is to precede "professional" media-based productions. I call this the "Gentle Logo" with the piano version of DJD Theme. Go here.

Hey Gang, After seeing all the Awesome stuff that Yves started on his Radiosity threads, I decided to mess around with a scene that I am working on. This is just the beginning, playing with the settings. I am certain that if I spend more time, I can get a better effect. I have 8 lights setup as Yves suggested (Cone Angle 180 degrees, 100% Width Softness) One exception is that the falloff doesn't touch any of the objects in the scene, except for the walls. I tried to move the lights closer together, but then the light was too concentrated in one spot. Should I be using more lights with smaller falloff?? I don't like the fact that the 55 gallon …

Hi all, I am thoroughly enjoying my A:M apprenticeship and have now completed my final lesson (not yet accepted by my Mentor though). Here it is: http://higginsdj.250free.com/downloads/Lesson6.mov Note that you may have to navigate to my gallery (theatre) page and access it there as 250Free may not allow direct linking (see below) My other efforts can be seen here: http://higginsdj.250free.com/theatre.htm This was by far the most complex animation I have ever done as it comprised 3 Chors (3 Shots) each with up to 5 blended actions overloaded with Chor Action. If nothing else I have learnt a lot about blending actions in A:M http://higginsdj.…

I was so inspired by Will Sutton's tree - that I had to give it a go. I had a leftover tree from when I was playing around with Marcel Bricman's Treez plugin - added hairy foilage - (2 emitters, 2 diffuse color decals) - When I rendered - decided I didn't like the colors - went into photoshop - changed to Grayscale, added the mountain horizon in the background - tweaked the contrast - Produced something very unusual for me - not cartoony - not really real - but pseudo-tromp-d'oeil... Will also post the original rendering

Heres a new character that I am working on. The design is loosely based on Mark Allens drawing for his first character (Mark, since your rotos provided the inspiration you can have a copy of this head model if you wish - just drop me a line). I've been following along Anzovins Modelling a Head tute (just got past the eye and mouth parts - some good lessons there) This character will be a seargent (Space Marine) that may be used in the next image contest and June animation contest. This should be viewed as fan movie (characters and concepts are undoubtably copyrighed), byt I came out with the idea and I had to make it... I made the characters long time ago, but I had them re - rigged for the animation... I've animated first two sequences and then I had other things to do, sooooo, this post is probably the way to get things started again... As I finish the sequences I will post them, and of course everyone around here is invited for comment (PLEASE) So, first sequence comes your way! Modeling caricatures is not so easy... I have had a try... Here is the result... Who is it? It is not Santa Claus! It is not Gandhi... Have a guess! Now there is only two caricatures on the A:M stills. You can have a search: http://www.hash.com/stills/thumbnails.php?...arch=caricature I believe in more caricatures... something for a newbie to download... and start to play with... why not have a little exchange of caricatures... upploading models! It can be "funny" to let different caricatures have some meeting - Santa Claus, Gandhi and some one else... what will they be talking about? It is up to everyones imagination to decide.

In the attached image I have several different styles of simple "building" graphics all created from one model with several poses. Now... check out the short building and the tall building. I am using a "window" decal with a color image and a bump image with a repeat. For the tall building I increase the vertical repeat.. depending on the height I increase or decrease this value. My question is this... I am very lazy... would there be a way to "link" the Y repeat of one image in a decal to another image? ... or... for bonus points, would there be a way to link the Y repeat value to the value of the "height" pose? I would love to have the "windows"…

Okay, I need to get a few things out of the way before I begin... LEGO in 2001 released a series of Toys called Bionicle. Basically it was about 6 bio-mechanical heroes (Called Toa) with elemental powers defending an ancient island (where other bio-mechanical robots lived) against an evil force. Well, since then the fanbase grew and grew and the story expanded... and I was one of the kids who was with it since it began. "Chronicles of Zion" - Just click on the quicktime or windows media version I think my 4Mbyte file was too big to upload here so I put the link to a website that has a quicktime and windows media versions. I want to post the whole 14 minute movie but it has a few hair issues (you can see the pixely hair on the blond character near the end of the trailer) and I'm not sure if I should submit it to A:M films. Maybe someone has an idea of how I can make the whole movie available? By the way, the movie is done but I am open to suggestions on making better animations, renders, etc. Enjoy! (Hopefully)
