It use to be that if you dragged a cp onto a spline in a space with no cp.......and then right clicked.....it would make a hook. However, I'm noticing now that in V 17, it makes a cp point on the spline instead. How or what is the process to force a hook instead? Thanks so much William

What do I do to make A:M read and write a custom model or animation format? For example, suppose I want to use A:M to make animations for a game engine. In Blender, I write a Python script. How do I go about this in A:M? I skimmed through the tech reference document but wasn't able to find anything about file I/O plugin support.

I see we've had a visit from a spamer this morning, one myrakern279. Not that we get many here but could there be a "button" on the forum pages to let users report a post as Spam. Should first time posters be allowed to include links? myrakern279's signature link is definitely of an adult nature!

A long time ago, in a different thread it was explained how to use Frame burn as a post effect to get the timecode burned in at render time. I should have thought of it before but, I rendered a sequence overnight and now need to go back and correct the errors. Frame Burn would have helped in that. Drat ! So it seemed it might be possible to do in a composite way by putting the renders on a layer and putting Frame Burn on those renders? However, when looking at them the file name is there but not the 00:00:00 time code sequence. The post effect is active, applied in the render settings is there another step I'm missing ? simon

For the next unit on the course I'm doing I would like to use frame rate of 50fps ( Pal x2 ). I think this is possible in AM but, are there complications playing it back afterwards on other peoples equipment ? I don't play games mysef but do know (?) that quite a few play at 50fps or higher, is that dependent on the graphics card fitted, the compression codec, both or something else altogether ? simon

This thread began here ( https://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=48030&hl= ) but I didn't want to hijack Marcos' topic. I was complaining about the a lock mode screen render freezing up with the Win10 busy icon spinning uselessly in front of me with no way to interrupt the process. Gerald suggested; Not in my case, other than waiting for the "non-render" to finish it can only be interrupted by killing A:M in the Task Manager. This behaviour started with v18 and seems to be related to the new feature of storing the screen image of a high patch count model into a memory buffer. Start with only A:M running on the computer and I want to screen render…

The subject of Desired Gamma came up and I was unable to get my software to cooperate at the time, so, I made an attempt at a video explanation of the little I know that I am posting here along with the Projects used and renders. One thing I still don't think I got across in the video is that if you are working with 2.2 gamma images, the gamma correction can get re-applied automatically with each iteration causing the image or portion of image (and colors) to lighten. Anyway, here is the video and Project files. Hopefully, it is helpful. Desired_gamma_testing.mp4 Desired_Gamma_testing.zip

Ever since the MakeNormalMap.atx material was replaced by the Surface Normal buffer in the render engine I've always had unpredictable results. I couldn't seem to get a flat plane that was orthogonal to the camera to return a consistent color of 128, 128, 255. Sometimes it did but many times a flat plane would come up short on the red & green channel. So in the course of generating wrinkle maps for the seats in the street car, I ran more than a few tests and have found the answer; to get the correct colours the algorithm needs a full range of surface normals in the image. The following images are my proof. The top image shows the chor layout; a camera orthogonal t…

When I first tried my Wacom stylus pad with A:M on my Windows 10 Surface Pro 4, I got some pretty wacky, annoying behavior (not caused by A:M, BTW). The following tricks cleared up these problems. How to get nice performance from a Wacom stylus pad on Windows 10: A few things to disable: In the search window on the Windows Settings page type "flicks" and select "turn flicks on and off". This opens the "Pen and Touch" configuration window. (For some reason typing "Pen and Touch" only provides you "pen and touch information", which is not the window you want.) On the "Flicks" tab, uncheck "Use flicks to perform common actions quickly and easily"--hope you don't…

So, I'm determined to model a character in A:M. I went on Google and found a character reference that has simple, sharp enough lines for me to follow, and decided to just do it. It has front, side and back views, so I have that covered. I've seen a few different tutorials now, and it seems each one has its own style/approach, and so there's not "one right way". So, I'm picking up things from each that I like and make sense to me. For example, using a sphere as an eyeball proxy to model around, from t he Bill Young face modeling CD. Not very far in at all, yet, and I'm expecting to have lots of mistakes along the way, but I'm saving a lot, so I should be okay. Just going…

Question for Rob: While improving the lighting today [at Live Answer Time] for Johns picture, we adjusted a bunch of global ambiance parameters. It seems that the Global Ambiance parameters can be adjusted from various places-, Camera or Choreography or Rendering all have inputs. What is the correct sequence of adjusting the Global Ambiance settings? Which Setting is the most important ....and then do you work your way "down the tree" to make further adjustments? Any clarifications are welcome. Thanks, Tom

Building a townscape for the new. Happy Families, project I'm hoping to set up the lighting this evening. In 3ds max ( many moons ago ) there was a "sun" seting so you could specify where the location was and what time of day, then the software would produce a sun effect for those settings. Working in V17, is there an equivalent in AM or, is there a global illumination setting. If so, could somebody kindly point me in the direction of the info on how to set it up and use it? What I'm after is a single light source, giving a, very rough, approximation of daylight. Rather than have to introduce lots of lights. simon

I was rendering a shot with a glowing object and I noticed that Screen based AO causes a 'banding' in the glow/ halow/ orb is present at the end of the last render pass. I wonder if this has to do with a setting or just a casualty of using screen based AO.... The glow is looking great until that last pass finishes and the AO is added in. I'm in V18. I increased the multipasses but that didn't help. Both with and without motion blurr carries the same results.

I'm not sure if I can make it to the Q&A tomorrow, but I need to create Sea floor caustics. In other apps, this is done by what is known as a "Gobo" light. Basically you use a spotlight{"Kleig") and place an animated image map in front of it. The image is set to only let light pass through the light areas....much like A:M's Transparency Map type. The animated image is pre-created with turbulent combiners to get a Caustic look. When the light shines through the image, it makes caustics on the surfaces below. Has anyone done this in A:M? Can it be done like this in A:M?

So I got a new Shining 3D EinScan scanner and the models are much more complex, in the range of a million polys. Very smooth and detailed and orders of magnitude larger than my old scans with the Xbox Kinect. So I'm trying to load the 3D files (mostly scans of automotive parts I replicate) and it will initially load, say it's around 1.4 million polys and then go to 30% and never load. I've left it for over 3 hours and it never loads, but doesn't crash. What is the limitation of importing OBJ or STL files to AM from the plugins utility? Thanks!

Wasn't sure where to post this so I posted it here as I will be refering to AM. GPU rendering. Is it faster and if so are there any plans to incorporate this feature into AM? If it was implemented I would pay a little extra to get the functionality. I think GPU rendering, if faster, would be worth more on the over head price of AM. ...any thoughts???

I'm doing some work with a student designing a perfume bottle. She wants the bottle to have a colour and transparency gradient so that its darker and less transparent at the top. I'm following Roberts suggestion regarding materials for my own animation were I need a heat transfer, but wondered if there might be a different way of doing it with the bottle ? Transparency and diffuse maps perhaps ? Any help gratefully received. regards simon

I have a suggestion for making the grid line display more useful (IMHO) if Steffen can manage it. Here is a typical grid setup for me; grid lines every 1/16" with a highlight line at each inch. Another typical grid for me is lines every inch with a highlight every foot. If I zoom out from this screen mag, at some point AM decides that the smaller grid squares can't be resolved on my monitor and whole grid is turned off. It would be useful if only the small grid was turned off while the highlighted lines remained. If you continue to zoom out, eventually the large grid also turns off.

Hair

I've played with Hair a few times and then put it back in the box because i could never get it to work. So I tried again today and it worked perfectly, until I turned motionblur on. The first subframe renders perfectly but then the geometry moves while the hair stays static on individual frames, causing it to intersect the geometry. I ran some tests by rendering without motion blur, with motion blur, with motion blur added in post(the best option), and lastly by rendering at 120fps without motion blur and then combining frames to create motion blur manually. The last option works but seems to add extraneous jitter to the hair, although this may just be my settings. …

OK, I have a path (a spline with 3 CP's) I have constrained my Camera to the path (Path Constraint) and I have also contrained the camera to aim at a null. Camera jumps to the path and travels along it BUT only travels 1/2 between the first and second CP (100% enforcement at chor end) BUT it also behaves like it is pointing at the null as if it has travelled the full length of the path. Obviously I am missing something here... Partially solved. Chor length was set too long. Edit - Fixed by deleting the path and camera constraints then doing it again.... Not sure what went wrong but it's working now.... Cheers

Just a question. Its another segment of the pc landscape that might be something to try. I know development resouces for AM are very very limited but just wondered. I run a linux box at home besides my windows ones and just thought it might be a way for more sales. I have no idea of the effort required but figure if Valve with its STEAM portal is pushing into Linux it might be a thought. Speaking of Steam ---- I still think AM on Steam would be a really good thing if you could figure out a yearly sub mechanism out with them. rich

After seeing Soulcage's wonderful renders and lusting after GPU rendering speeds, as well as some of the non-character tools in other packages I finally spent a couple of days on the export and render pipeline from AM to Blender and it's cycles GPU renderer. Bearing in mind that my knowledge of blender is minimal at best, it was surprisingly easy. I exported the model as an obj file and then exported the matching mdd. In Blender I imported the same. turned on the cycles renderer and pressed go. RomanJump.mov

connecting with proper splinage Anyone care to take a stab at it? Unfortunately you can not just lay the 2 pieces next to the hinge because the maker bot rep 2 will not print them correctly. For the most part makerbot seems to need most things to be splinedproperly in Am. hingeV2_11.prj

We were talking about overlapping motion in DavidDenzill's recent thread. This PRJ lets you experiment with overlapping motion and quickly see the result. HeadBanger03.prj open the PRJ open Action2 and look at it from a side view. I have keyframed the two extremes of a head-banging motion on Rabbit... up-down-up-down-up-down... play it! It's motion but it's stiff! Next, grab the keyframes for Head and Neck and slide them a couple frames later. (Hold down the SHIFT key and drag a bounding box around the keyframes you want to move.) play it! Suddenly, what was stiff is now flexible! Try three frames... four... five.…

I've added light sources to the headlights of a car so it can do some night driving. They work well on most of the scene but don't show up on a building that has a light list. Typically to fix this I'd drag the chor instance of the light into the building's light list. But since the light is a bone within the car it doesn't have a chor instance to drag. Anyone know of a work around? Thanks.

Hello all, boy has it been ages. I have these models I wish to export as .obj files, but I have no idea how to do it. I looked around online, and got no viable answers. I wanted to export them as .obj files to fiddle with in other programs, which accept such files. Nothing accepts .mdl files. Anyone wish to help me out? I am using A:M version 15, which by the looks of things is fairly old. It sounds viable, as others have mentioned being able to export as .obj files, but I am unsure if it is limited to newer versions of A:M or if there is a step I am missing. Thank you!
