Did my first 'quadruped' using TSM2 in Version 16... what a great utility that TSM2 still is... to rig something that complicated that quickly... come on! ONE THING TO REMEMBER, TSM2 will not show-up in the 64 bit version of A:M... so it will behoove users to keep both the 32 and 64 bit versions around. THANKS to Shawn Rogers aka 'newguy' for letting me share this work. bull.mov

i´ve made my first female character lately ( can´t believe it took me years to finally model a woman ), and i wanted to let her sing, somehow i always wanted to model a girl and see her sing.. so i took one of my favorite minnie riperton songs and started animating. it´s just a short break from my "alive in the attic" project, which is all dark and spooky, and this one is bright and sunny... the only intention i have with this project is that it should look beautiful and light, and of course to learn stuff i didn´t know before. so far i´ve learned tons of stuff from it, i´m sure there´s more to come. i´m pretty proud of my rendertimes on this one... i´ve alwa…

I decided to start a thread on some of my experimenting with outdoor lighting and rendering. So here is the scene I am going to be using: I designed/modeled it to have complex shadows, relfections, and have IOR somewhere (the water (1.33)) Here is a late afternoon lighting. I have updated that lighting setup slightly after the last render, I added 2 bulbs underwater (as suggested in this thread to give some shadow detail, and I also added a Lane T on the bottom of the pool. Ive been enjoying rendering to OpenEXR and using its high dynamic range (32 bit too) and buffers to get additonal tweakability. Next up is the midday daytime look! …

inspired by robs amazing tests i´m trying to use cloth for some typo animation for work, to get some sort of bouncing yelly-letters falling down. it wasn´t easy to get it to behave like this, but i´m pretty much there. the letters will have to be remodeled though, they´re not complex enough for a smooth cloth-simulation, i just left them as they were imported by the ai-wizard. i´ve tried several approaches, with the letters in a invisible box etc... but i wanted the whole word to look like it´s one piece and i wanted to have the letters return to their original form and position at the end of the simulation, so i connected the single letters with invisible geometry. and t…

i wanted to use the null shader to render a depth map for adding DOF in post. the problem is that the null shader does not do what it´s supposed to... the null shader should overwrite all decals and materials, right? the only thing it does for me is rendering everything a lot darker. i was able to render a good usable depth map by removing all the materials and decals, disable all lights and placing a material effector with a gradient from white to black in the focus area. this way it´s pretty easy to animate the focus... for testrenders it was ok to make an extra version of the project and remove all decals and materials manually from the few models... but if i imagi…

Just a quick test of hair, first time outside of TAOAM. Attached is a ZIP of the project and movie. Sorry, AVI only. [bTW, when uploading an AVI, the forum says "Upload failed. You are not permitted to upload this type of file".] Some of the hairs go through the ears, but the effect seems to be okay. Is there a good strategy for getting hair to be routed in areas that don't necessarily match the splinage? ETA: Just found John Bigboote's post on HAIR. ShaggyHair_cam.zip

Much of my focus these days is with hand drawn animation but it all tends to blend and further complement the study of animation. For instance, some folks spend a great deal of time sculpting physical models (maquettes) as an aide to visualizing their characters and objects in order to make drawing them (from any angle) easier. Even animators who draw their characters should have a 3D computer animation program. Of course I recommend Animation:Master because... with splines... modeling is an extension of drawing. This was primarily an exercise in trying to model this character quickly. It would have been wise for me to sketch out a few drawings to rotos…

Hi. I'm working on a lip sync segment and I have a question on how others do the syncing. I stared with 3 +/- mouth poses, smile/frown, open/closed, and ooo/aaa, then used these to make the 9 Preston Blaire phonemes. After creating the dope sheet, I found it took a lot of tweeking to get it looking good and I got realy confused trying to adjust all the channels. What I ended up doing is not using a dope sheet and just animating to the sound track using the 3 basic mouth poses. This worked better and was much faster; lesson learned. I am just wondering how others do their lip syncing.

hi at all... i have a model with hair, the model also has some dynamic constraints. when i´m rendering with the hair turned off, the dynamic constraints work fine, but when i render with hair on, no dynamic constraint movement shows in the render. the hair dynamics work fine, just that the hair seems to prevent the dynamic constraints to work. any clue? i have another little problem with this model, maybe some rigging experts can help... the model was rigged with the squetch rig, everything is working as it should, except one thing: the ring finger curl isn´t working, all other fingers are fine though... i noticed that in the "relationships>bones" folder …

Here's the animatic for our Holiday animation. It's pretty rough but cobbled together mainly to get the timing to match the music. This year we actually commissioned original music!!! so we don't have to sneak around and be "careful" of who we show it to. I've already posted the animatic on YouTube and will be posting WIP renders. The actual gingerbread house was modeled and rigged by Holmes and he did a great job on it. It'll be fun to get it moving! the closing shot of the dancing company logo will be done by my cohort, Randy, so what's in the animatic is just a placeholder. I'm sure he'll do something terrific. EDIT:: THIS IS A NEWLY UPLOADED FILE WITH STEEEREO …

Hello! Seniors at my high school are required to complete a project for a final grade. It is supposed to occupy over 15 hours of time to create and blah blah blah... I am choosing analogue photography. I plan on doing a video and I need some titles for each section. This is my christmascard for 2010 entirely made in AM. Everything has been modeled by myself except the drumset.( T.Y. drumset maker ) It has been made in honour for an old friend. A 76 old jazz mucisien with amazing great musical capacities who lives in andalusie spain.I met him again after 27 years. He has become older but his music impressed me in and have noticed -I thought it was not possible- has become better. A merry christmas and a happy new year to all of you. Greetings , Marc

I have a rather complex landscape with a road and want the middlespline of the road become a path for my car. So now when I create a new path constraint I am not able to pick this specific spline as a path . I know, that it is possible, because I have achieved it before, but lost the constraint, when I switched my car model. So my question is: Is there a special trick or workaround to make that spline pickable again or make it selectable in the pull downmenue?

I haven't gotten these pants to survive the jump over the box like the shorts could, but they work well in a walk. LongPants_700.mov Although Thom is on a walk cycle, the pants had to be simulated for the whole range This was rendered with Jenpy's FastAO. AO really does help make things look "there". And now it's fast!

I've recently been doing a lot of cutout animation, and that has lead me to a program called CrazyTalk which uses a 3d mesh to deform an image of a head. But then I thought how easy it would be to use the same method in AM. It's a very simple mesh mapped with a photo of my head, with separate eyes inserted and the next step being to add teeth as well. By using a face mesh with pre-built emotion poses it should make creating character heads very simple. Because the lighting is built into the photos I've rendered with 100 ambient light and used the environment shader to add the specular highlights to the eyes. Next step is to add simple bodies to complement the heads. …

Well it appears as though i am just like thanksgiving now. I only come around once a year with something to share. But i want to go ahead and get this topic on here so people can look forward to what i have done this year. I've definitely stepped up from last year's video but only in the fact that i am doing more animation and videos rather than pictures for the individuals in the video. And several of the scenes i went into some detail creating but didnt go to photorealistic given the look of the characters. I started on the video late this year or i would have redesigned the characters but i really like the look of these guys and they are fun to animate. This is a…

Well, I've tried following David Rogers' tutorial in his book. Here's what I have so far. I'm not necessarily going for 100% anatomically correct, but I would like that muscular/superhero style look. Please, crits are welcome as I'm not very good at the organic side of modeling Fortunately, about a year ago I did this fairly intensive study of the muscular male body for some superhero drawings I was doing, so I have a fair idea of the proportions on paper, translating to 3D is a bit trickier for me

Hello there! After longer abstinence I finally started A:M again and thought that a pumpjack would be a good exercise for a mechanical object. Moving parts in various directions for rigging, both big and small parts to model. Right now it's in the "big parts completed" stage (attached is a quick render from the modeller). Next steps: adding details like nuts and bolts, some gears and vents for the engine box, struts, walkways and ladders. Still lots of work to model but I'll post this with a question: any good tutorials or how-to's out there when it comes to texturing/weathering? I think... no, I know that I'll suck at that - and even though this is just a little si…

Hi folks, In order to distract me from my lightingtests, I did this version of the Nibelung Ring, that Alberich forged out of the Rheingold which he had stolen from the Rheintöchter (mermaids). This Ring grants him the greatest powers (worldreign and so on ), but at the same time curses him to live without love forever. The curse is symbolized by the dragon Fafnir devouring himself out of greed. Besides of its incredible magical power, this ring holds some additonal close combat weaponery: a poisonous sting and some extractable razorsharp (mermaids) fins. http://www.jostkeller.de/dreid/testing/Rhe...dRing111011.zip Crits welcome

OK, I bought a Cintiq 12WX and the "Chaos and Evolution" DVD by David Revoy from another store (I liked this artists approach to character design) that covered off some different ways of getting inspiration using different software and a basic tute on drawing and colouring for character design. Now this is NOT totally original work - it is based on David Revoy's "Water horse" design with some bits and pieces changed (I only did the head) to make the character less edgy and more 'cute'. I'm hoping to model and texture it as well (in AM). Happy to get critiques. Cheers

I know this sounds crazy, but I have an idea for a kids book and I'm going to go ahead with it. I'll publish on Createspace. It will be about an old woman who lives on her roof. Lots of morales built in but I can't say too much on that. I'm trying to come up with illustrations.....of which there'll be about 25. I'm heading in the direction of a sort of a 3D tactile felt feel. I'm not sure but it could be the right direction. It's all flat "south park" style which is good for speed. This attached image is just a basic test of the style. I'd be interested in any thoughts.

Hello all! It has been (I feel like I have said this too much) a long time since I have posted. I have been really busy with school and polo and photography stuff. My Dad wants me to do another archviz sketch for his office card for Christmas. Last year I used my Residential Lap pool sketch. For this year I wanted to mix it up a bit. I first started by using a vertical composition (Final render is going to be 1200x1600px). I then chose to use a one-point perspective composition to emphasize scale and accentuate depth. After I had these in mind I sketched out a doodle involving pillars and arches. The idea was to have a hall lined with pillars lead to a…

Yep, I've started picking away at another side model, just to keep things interesting, so I figured that I might as well take a stab at a character from pretty much the only video game I play and that would be Master Chief. It seems others have started models of the Chief, but I can find no record of anyone finishing, so let's hope I can finish this one at some point! Now, something I have learned very early on, this model is kinda tricky, lots of weird placements for shapes and stuff, but yeah

So I do a test render of my new steam locomotive and I notice that something funky is happening on the half inch plate under the cab in the shadows (see image). The patch layout for that plate is legal and all the normals are pointing outward. When I built it, I was trying for the fewest patches possible. I took another swing at it without any regard for patch count and came up with something equivalent with only two more patches and a much nicer render. The only real differences are that on the offending plate there are three point patches and the three patches forming the rectangular edges of the central cutout are formed with four, dead end, two cp splines joining the …
