EXR IO 2.0 for Photoshop has been released. This won't do much for those without current Photoshop/Adobe CC but for those that have it... Among other things, EXR IO is said to extract all channels from an EXR file and place them into separate layers in Photoshop. For features and download see: https://www.exr-io.com/features/ Disclaimer: I haven't tested this with A:M's EXR files yet.

Hi Guys, I was curious if you had any favourite books and recommended reading on animation / creating shorts? Been reading more about screenwriting lately also wondering if there are good books specifically about writing for animation?

Hi, Some time ago, I tried to find a way to use Roadkill ( http://www.pullin-shapes.co.uk/page8.htm ), a free standalone program, to autounwrap mdl model. And there is a way! ... I tried to do it, with help of PHP scripts... But as I am not a programmer, the script is heavy, slow, it has "Undefined offset", problems with big models, and it is not a plugin in AM. But don't be worry, the principle works better than my scripts to download the scripts: the order to use the scripts: step 1: translate the mdl model in a obj model ( by the "MDL 2 OBJ for roadkill" script. ) step 2: import the obj in Roadkiller, and unwrap it. Then export it. step3:…

I asked a few months ago about file structures for people working on a project and was very appreciative of the responses received. I'm trying to plan a project which I hope to spend next year working on, could anyone kindly point me to a resource for overseeing the running of a complete project? I have no real experience in this area and have always relied on memory and catching up when needed. I'd like to try to do it better this time. Its not so much the particular details of individual areas such as models but the overall structure of a project and how to keep track of it as it unfolds? Any help gratefully received. Thank you. regards simon

So I had to renew my license at the worst possible time (budget, time, job change (hopefully), Rear Window project, and a Christmas project). Bought a new copy, downloaded the latest 64 bit copy (17g) fired her up and tried to get back to work. But, after opening a chor that I created last weekend and tried to switch to shaded mode, A:M crashed, repeatedly. If I open the chor in 16b I have no problems. So I take a look at the OpenGL settings and notice a definite difference between the settings of my two versions. My problem is that A:M won't let me change the settings in 17g....so what to do guys (and gals)? settings in 16b settings in 17g

My kind of fun... from Disney: vco0SpSz17g This certainly isn't everyone's cup of tea but there are some themes that are core to capturing the imagination of a youthful spirit. Such themes of creativity and invention... righteous empowerment even.. and the other naive curiosities that inspire us when young are often set aside as we enter adulthood. Returning to such timeless fascinations is why we watch movies in the first place.

A (maya) screenshot posted by an AnimationMentor student. Her character is flying apart and even the technical support at the school can't figure out why. That is life with maya for anyone below the guru level. I feel bad for her, I think she has a deadline of midnight tonight for the assignment.

I am having trouble posting links here, but I put an update on my website http://www.monoboom.co/ Sorry to say I've lost my other downloader so I'm back to 1 download on Play for my app (me!). Anyway, with a green screen, and the ability to convert that to a black background PNG, I think a lot could be done... But I'm on moderator queue and you took down my topic. Am I really that bad at posting? Looks like http://www123videomagic.com/ has a green screen kit that could create an image sequence (with a not included camera to a RAW file) that could be converted to PNG (with other software) for color transparency (which is not the old color transparency just…

Hadn't modeled anything in awhile, so I thought I'd use the holidays to play. I had never owned one of these Funko Pop! figures, but for Christmas I was given a set of five of them (Animaniacs Yakko, Wakko, Dot plus Pinky and the Brain.) I've seen them everywhere, though. Just for my own amusement, I decided to make one of me. It looked like a simple model to do and it gave me an excuse to try out the v19 alpha on a modeling project. I'll have to check into trying to reproduce some of the issues I ran into. I had several times where I had to hit the "f" key multiple times to get the normals to flip and the delete key sometimes had the same problem. I actu…

So I would like to get some feedback from the animators on this subject. How does one "block" in the animation poses using AM? I ask because doing so causes some issues with AM's auto curve of the timeline. How do you guys do it?

Rendering to file that is... Increasingly real time rendering is going mainstream and in consumer markets long render times won't be acceptable. Just in time for SIGGRAPH 2014, Physical Based Rendering is being demo'd without plugins via HTML5. https://labs.sketchfab.com/siggraph2014/viewer.html?model=devastator It's a far cry from fully rendered real time animation but it's getting there.

Hey all--- Working on an outdoor scene with a grassy plain that rises to a mountain. I'm looking at a grassy texture, then a rocky, then a granite-like one for the sheer mountain. Question is, how to effect a smooth transition from grassy to rocky to granite without them obviously being patch breaks. Just getting into texturing heavily and any head's ups or links to getting started would be appreciated. Thanks, Rich

I am working on animating a feature length video. It is slow as molasses. I decided to produce an illustrated script as an intermediary step. To do this, I put the text in a Microsoft Word document. I inserted the bmp's I created in A:M from cho files. There are about 210 pictures. I start out with nice big bmp's. They display well in full screen. Then these get compressed when I insert them into Word. They still display well in Word, but of course, are much smaller in the document. Then the entire document gets compressed when I make a pdf in Soda 5 Pro. My Word document is about 90 MB. My Soda pdf is about 17 MB. The pictures start out cear and end up blurry. …

As I have diverse versions of the Animation master, I came to a strange habbit in the workarounds of them. After construckting some models with the help of rotoscopes, I started up AMv11.1b and added some tga files to make a new model. Every tga file(or jpg etc) I load comes up blanc and I can't work with them. The only way to see something is using the render button, but that's no way of using it. I thought they were made to use in shaded and wireframe rendermode. What's the reason these rotoscopes appear as white shades and not the way they are intended? It doesn't matter what I import, decals rotoscopes, they all go blanc. For info: I use it on win98 co…

I want to make transparent windows with sign letters across them. For example, there might be individual letters saying "Bill's Barbershop" that we could see from the outside or from the inside. I don't want a rectangular sign that I decal on the window. I want only the individual letters or perhaps a logo to show. Is there a way to do this in A:M? How?

Been in the market for a new video card, looking for something that has workstation performance without the big price ticket and came across the Fury cards that have 4096 bit data path. Seemed interesting but wonder if they have any double precision available on them? Seems so far in my hunt for a new card the range I was looking at is the Quadro m4000 or AMD FirePro w7100 or w8100. Not even sure if those are worh the money they are asking. I don't run a 4k display and only use my single 21ux cintiq so 4gb of memory should be plenty. The issues I have with my GTX 950 is limited zoom range on cad models and the shaded surfaces aren't exactly matched with edges when…

I don't know where this belongs. All i know is that I am having some serious stability issues. I open my app and everything works fine to a certain point. After that point, if I do anything else, the program goes bonkers. I lose my toolbars, my menu bars, everything. The only way I can save is my right clicking on the project in the Project Workspace. I have never had this problem with the "Disc in Drive" versions of this program. I built this machine for the sole purpose of being able to run this program efficiently. My machine is literally only a couple months old. Why is it so unstable? I have a Dell XPS SE, Win 10, Radeon 8GB GDDR 5, Core i5 machine. Will Pro…

Well it is good to be back. Been way way too long, but work has had me flat out since July and will continue to do so thru the end of the year. I hadn't done anything with Papa Bear, contests (who won the Prehistoric one anyways?) or 3d printing. Now, I have a request. I have a good friend who really is into Rocky and Bullwinkle, and has requested a 3d print of the two of them. I don't have nearly enough time to model them, print and finish them before the final years holiday, so I'm wondering if anyone has a model or two kicking around? If not, does anyone have the bandwidth to do some modeling for me? I am willing to pay for the work, nothing is free in this w…

Hi all, Interesting quandry to ask about. I recently did a fresh reinstall of my system, but switched from BIOS to UEFI, and from MBR to GPT for the hard drives. When I entered my registration info, and key for A:M, it wouldn't let me register. It just kept refreshing the product key window. Might this be related to the changes I made? If so, I guess I need to request a new key? Thanks

Hi, I’d like to open a discussion on creating springs in Animation:Master. Rob created a great tutorial demonstrating the bone-to-spring system, which is an older method in Animation:Master. My question is whether it would be possible to use Bullet to create springs, as they could be considered soft bodies in Animation:Master. Thanks,

Front view is upside down. All other views and shortcut to camera display correctly. I don't know what I pushed. I cannot find a way to turn the front view right side up. This is not a camera issue as far as I can see. I've done two searches in the forum and did not find this question answered. This is probably something simple, but it hasn't happened to me before. I did not save. I closed out the project and started the file up again in a different project, but the front view still displays upside down, while all other views display correctly.

So over the past year or two, I've started volunteering my services to some fan productions. So far it's been a great experience and I feel a sense of accomplishment as I'm now completing projects on a very regular basis. Now I'm considering expanding that practice into something that might make a few dollars here and there. I by no means am looking to quit my day job. Rather, make a little bit of money on the side doing what I already do in my spare time. Thing is, I'm not really sure where to start. Also I'm not entirely sure how to best "get my name out there" so to speak. I'm not looking to do big things, rather target smaller groups that need a bit of work …

I had an odd thought today... What if we had a mode of modeling that wouldn't allow more than two splines to connect to the same Control Point? I can think of one particular downside to this (more on that later), and surely there must be more problems waiting in the wings but the thought is/was that while most folks are looking for easier ways to model another solution might actually be to make it a little bit harder to model in that... while in that particular mode... modeling with less than optimal splinage would be harder if not impossible. The downside would be where we want to connect discontinuous splines to another spline. But in this case we (the mode…

I have been playing around with the cool Fisheye lens project that some kind person has posted online for Hash users. It has some cool sliders where you can adjust various things like: 1) Wide Angle 2) Lens Distance 3) Bigger 4) Whiskey Glass 5) facet After going through an art book retrospective on "Perspective" I came across this picture reminding me about the different kinds of specific Perspectives (see attached). I don't know how the person who created the Fisheye lens did it, but is it possible to create a lens whereby you could use a "pose slider" to shift between 2 and 5 point perspective? To simplify the question... As the number of vanishing …

I find myself playing tug-of-war with Version 18 of A:M more than I used to with Version 15. There seems to be a lot more snap. I pull a control point to a position when I am modeling, and the computer snaps it back to where it was. How can I turn the snap off or adjust it to a level that is helpful?

I couldn't locate the previous topic on Davinci Resolve bSo... Black Magic has announced the release of Davinci Resolve from Beta testing. It is now available in free and paid versions. If you don't have a dedicated video editor this is well worth a look, especially as Black Magic also produces the compositing software Fusion (which is not a dedicated video editor) and integration between the two will surely continue as time goes on. The primary difference between the free and paid release ($995) is higher resolution capabilities used in professional studios. The free versions (of Davinci Resolve and Fusion) operate on Mac and PC while the full version work…

I am currently running A:M V18.0M (avx) on Windows 10, and everything seems GREAT except I notice my render time indicator is being 'cut-off' by the program... happens in A:M render and A:M NetRender as well. I have 2 montitors... one is a 4K and the other is a 1920 X1080 Dell... it happens on both. I have tried adjusting the little sliders that would make the column bigger, but with no luck. It's a very-very small issue- and if I hover over a frame or the current render frame it will show the time elapsed or total frame render time..., anyone else have this? If more people see it this way- I will submit as a bug.

Hi, Not sure if this is the right place to ask this stuff. If not, feel free to move it to the proper location. I used to use A:M a number of years ago and moved on to polygon modeling (yes, I know polygon isn't a nice word around here). I want to get into doing some animations and am looking back at A:M again. I remember how easy it was to rig and weight a character was and especially to animate it. So, my questions are: 1) In the software that I am currently using, I have the ability to move a point along an edge without having to guess where to place it. Does A:M have anything that would allow you to move a control point along the surface of a spline? …

For those of you that keep track of file formats and other technical aspects of the trade you may want to watch the glTF (Open GL Transmission Format) standard as it seems to be gaining a lot of traction especially in light of current interest in augmented (and virtual) reality. Perhaps more specifically, flTF optimizes assets for rendering instead of modeling frameworks; primarily via JSON (Javascript Object Notation). Of interest, glTF is not a file format so much as it is a scheme to move 3D data from file formats into a standard encoding that can be compressed/decompressed for transmission (primarily over the internet). The example used is that of other standard…

I don't know enough to suggest how useful this may be to those who are interested in the gaming aspect of 3D but it's newsworthy so... This is a bit of an odd question but I'ma gonna ask it anyways... When a person using a program such as A:M performs a copy/paste I must assume that: Data selected is stored in a copy/paste buffer That data is not stored in the operating system's clipboard (i.e. the operating system's standard copy/paste buffer usually used for text and images). I will further assume that if we could see the data we might only see the bits or the bytes or... perhaps the exact data that was selected at the time (numbers, text, etc). I realize this can get complex when we step away from standard text and image data for those times when a spline is selected and copied... or a …

Installed the Win10 Creators update and everything appears to be working fine. My primary interest of course is gaining access to Paint 3D and testing that out and while it's basic beyond belief I must confess that I'm excited by the prospects of the average Windows user being able to paint 3D models. I chose as my first model to paint the Goose from the A:M Library. Painting is pretty straightforward but minimum size for paintbrush is limited to 5 pixels in size. For smaller detail a pencil, pen or marker must be used. So... laying in a base color with the brush and then zooming in and adding detail is a must. Format-wise the trip from A:M to Paint 3D is n…

Hello! Importing 3D models from polygons application, 3D scanner, or sculpt application pose many problems in AM. The high-definition models are too dense to be exploited, others require to be re-examined in the topology In reality it was better and faster when it is rethinking the topology in AM as a whole (patches, hooks, UV, joints, etc ....). Hence the usefulness of rotoscope, it is possible to import 3D informations: - By drawings (which requires a good knowledge of perspectiv) - With photos (with some imperfections because of the position shooting) - Or to import 3D models (scanner or other soft 3D) as props to make rotoscope. …
