A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Man, I feel so incompetant on this software. I bought it because of all the help I could get on the forum, though! At any rate, I'm having trouble accessing my libraries. I click on the libraries tabs and they all come up empty. I saw a post from a ways back for copying the data from the cd to the hardrive, but I didn't understand what to do once I got it copied. Help, anyone? Thanks Sruli

I was just wondering how much of the multi-pass everyone uses. I've read that 16 is the best, but then they have up to 256. Does anyone go that high? And if so, what would be the situation. I was wondering if anyone had a chart......for simple renders use 1 to 4, higher quality use.... and so on.

I have made an walk cycle for an character of mine. This action is repeated approximately ten times in the chor. However, in the middle of the walk I need the character to do some other movements whit his hands, head and torso, while still walking. What is the best approach to set up this? blending in some other action?

You asked: I am a new user of A:M and I'm having trouble importing Illustrator files into A:M. I have done this: plugins> wizard> AI> then browse to my file, adjust the settings, but nothing happens. Can you guys give me a hand? what are you trying to import into A:M? The AI wizard is mostly for importing AI vector files into A:M in order to make them 3D. It will extrude a shape created in AI, but it will not take an AI graphic that appears to be 3D and make it 3D... (if that makes any sense( Post the graphic here as a jpg, and expand on what you want to do with it.

Hi there, I'm curious as to whether A:M allows for external assets for workflows. I may be going around it the long way but it is a newbie question. For example:- If I'm making a scene and it was my job to animate it and someone elses job to model the character. Would the character model update automatically the next time I loaded my project? How does that work? You can point me to a chapter in the book if you wish, I have a copy of it. So in theory, I could animate several characters that look the same as a base model and then change them later to be individual people? Cheers Clinton

Is it possible to configure A:M to zoom on the mouse pointer? I realize I can use the Bound Zoom when I need to zoom in on a specific area, and that works great, but using the scroll wheel and mouse pointer together to zoom in on a target area has become second nature... Just curious.

I'm not sure if I'm blind or something, but where can I find the info on a model after I'm done with it. I'm required to tell my superior the vertex amount and.... well, don't know where that would be. Or if there is one... Or I might end up counting them...

Hi My name is Graham Easton and I live in Lancashire England. I am a retired mechanical engineer having run my own engineering company for 30 years. During that time I have been amazed how the drafting techniques have changed from pencil and paper to computer graphics. I now make short videos and I love trains both full size and models, (yes an anorak as we are referred to in England). However I have always found animation fascinating, particularly moving machinery rather that actors. Some time back I purchased a copy of Animation Master 2004 version 10.5 but never had the time to use the program due to work. Time has moved on and I now have the time but not…

I just purchased the latest and greatest version of AM 2008 AKA V15.... Running on Vista (AMD + 3 gigs of ram with a Nvidia 8800 GPU card) I have used AM before.... but have been away from the tool for more than 2 years now..... I have a strange problem..... When ever I try and highlight a region in the choreography window or a model window the area hightlighted is obscured with a Gray or black box?? I don't know why this is happening?? Is this something to do with my video card or setting? (Nvidia 8800) The grey/black region goes away if I minimize then maximize the application window.... HELP Paul

I made a model, imported it into the choreography window, however, when I do this the bounding box (the yellow box around the models), is diagonal and mispraportioned. I have attached the project file and an image. Edit: I have reuploaded the project file(should be the second one) and the model file 15_second_project.prj 15_second_project.prj Guy.mdl

Hello im new to A:M. Theres a couple of things i've already tried out in A:M, I have like discovered things myself by experimenting and so on... STILL, theres some things I wonder about: - Is It possible to make full lenght animations? because I noticed that the frames are only to 01:00 min If it is like that, then is it possible to melt all the short clips together by using A:M? - I wish to add special 3d effects to an already made .AVI clip. I try to load the clip into A:M but it says that its an invalid choreography file. How can I correct this? or is there any tutorial that can show how you can add 3d models into avi clips etc. - Is it po…

I have created a model containing various groups with surface attributes assigned. When I choose the name of the model itself in the project workspace, various surface attributes are assigned in it's properties as well. When I right-click on the surface property (or properties) of the model, only "new relationship" and "properties" appear in the drop-down box. How can I set the model's surface to "not set" and preferably (but not necessarily) leave the groups' surface attributes intact? Thanks, Chris

I am looking for two things, I would have expected to be simple in 3D: 1. It ocurred, that I needed an animation rendered backwards, so I thought maybe just setting in render the frames to start from frame 30 and end frame 0 for example, BUT..... that´s not accepted. 2. I just want to flip the cameraview, so that the chara doesnt run left right but right left. Thought about scaling the x value to minus something, BUT.... there is no scaling for camera. I know , both this could be done in post, but my question is, is there an easy way to do this in AM, that I have overlooked?

Hi all, I am embarking on an animation project and just decided to purchase AM but I am a bit hesitant that I will be able to pull this off since I am not a professional. My charachters are simple, a smiley face and a chalkboard with a straight forward story. I worry that I won't be able complete my character rigging and will be dead in the water. How hard is this and do people offer rigging services? I use a Mac and have 10.4.7 (Tiger) and I noticed the additional available software that helps you rig doesn't work with 10.4. Thanks in advance, Lori Hiatt

Hey everyone, I am in V.11. In choreography I want to make a part of a model go transparent from one frame to the next. Is there a way to do this. I have the geometry as a group within the model. I can make it go transparent by turning the percentage of that group up, but it won't key. THE funny thing is that if I select the whole model, it will key the transparency level. But I only want a group of the geometry to go transparent. ANY SUGGESTIONS as to how I can do this? Thanks so much!!

Hi! I'd like to create an idyllic scene of a country field with a field of tall grass that has contains some grass elements that "undulate" in the wind. This doesn't have to be completely realistic, and it seems that I'd only want to render a few "individual" blades of grass for the foreground. Does anyone have an idea on what kind of technique I could use to create this tall grass? Would this be a "Hair"-type technique? a "Flocking"-technique? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks, Tim

I'm working on a shot where a driver is seen from the front of their car. I've added subtle shakes, which have added a lot, but I definitely need objects to zoom by. I'm not a stickler for their non-uniformity (we can pass systematically placed palm trees for all I care), but I've encountered a problem: The first passing tree was nice. The second one I set up to complete the same distance in the given time, and then dragged its keyframes forward in the project workspace. Now it DOES pass by later, but during the time before its first keyframe, it appears stationary at (0,0,0). This is obviously unacceptable. What am I missing here?

so im having a hard time trying to combine the sparkles materials in a scene. basically i have a space ship. i want a trail of sparkles to follow it. easy so far? well the sparkles for some reason have been causing large black dots or holes on the space ship. turning the sparkles off seem to render fine, no holes. so i figure ill just render the sparkles separate and alpha channel them in. problem solved.... except the sparkles dont show on an alpha export. i have to turn the alpha channel off to see them.... is this an expected result? sparkles materials dont show in alpha?

Well, I guess I'm a newbie (again). I started using A:M with V1 back in 1994 and used it very regularly though '98 then less frequently through 2000 and only occassionally until 2002. That was the last I had upgraded and the last version I currently have (until my '07 upgrade arrives ). Anyway, I've been away from it for so long, I totally forget the ins and outs and nuances of this delicate software package. As I make my way through rudimentary modeling and lighting, it's starting to come back to me but it seems I've run into a problem. First, I'm working on a 2.3Ghz Duo Core MacBookPro running Paralells (as the '02 version isn't available to run natively in …

I preface this with saying I realize I'm missing some simple step to this. I don't think its a bug. So I apologize for the boneheaded question...however... But I'm having some difficulty installing the AM web subscription on my Mac. I was wondering if someone could help me out. So installing it directly under my admin account works just fine. Its installing it under one of my "user" accounts where I have issues. Although I went through multiple permutations of this formula, this is the last install I did. I installed under my…
