DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com

-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)

User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I took time out from the exercises to read the help files start to finish, and now that I'm marginally less confused than before I restarted the exercises. What, I wonder, is this huge circular geometric thing that overlays the Choreography window called a Rim? I moved it here, then there, then did some fairly dramatic moves with it and it seems not to affect a thing. I suspect it's a lighting thing but just how and where the two are connected escapes me. Could some kind soul spend a few words and enlighten me?

i was wondering how to get different properties of a liquid, for example, if i want it to be oozing, like blood or lava, and splashy, like water... by the way is there a way to cease water from emiting? i cant seem to find an option for it, and if not, will you come up with an update concerning a way to stop the liquid? thanks, i am excited to have liquid in the animations!

Hi - another walking question. I referenced exercise 5 "Take a walk" - and created the 4 poses at 00:00:00, 00:00:05, 00:00:10 & 00:00:15 then I copied the frame and mirror pasted. The walk cycle looks good. When I bring the character into a chor and apply the walk action and have it repeat lets say 10 times. Each time it repeats there is a 'jerk" motion when it starts over, so there isn't a smooth transition between the last frame 00:00:15 - going back to 00:00:00. Is there something I am doing wrong... some setting I didn't set or something? Thanks again - Eric

Hey everyone. I'm attempting to simulate an object colliding with an airplane in mid air. It gets hit from the side rather than head on or from the rear and there is no explosion....just a physical hit that needs to break it apart. My question: Can some type of dynamics/ simulation break the plane up and simulate the pieces falling with drag? **Additional complication is that the airplane appear to be moving at about 100mph even though it's only moving up and down with a little rotation. So when the plane breaks up, there is no forward speed for the simulation to work with as far as the pieces dragging..... Is there a way to do this in A:M without goi…

I get some terrible results when scrubbing my video. The animation is not timed and it is difficult to see if you have an accurate layout. For example, when doing the "Can You Say That" tutorial, scrubbing to verify the lip sync is just about worthless. So the solution is to render to see how it works. The problem is the render takes 1 1/2 hours to complete. Is there any kind of "quick render" that you can do that will do the entire 6 second video but quickly so you can just see how it looks. I am using an Athlon 64 dual core 4200+ CPU with 2GB of matched RAm and v13C of A:M. Thanks for the help.

Ok, I'm building my house in AM, and needless the say the file size is growing and growing. As I build walls, I put the molding, light switches, vents etc, on that wall model. Now I'm wondering if I should put every model separate so when I render I can turn off the unneeded models. So....does AM only render what is is the camera view? Will I save render times if I turn off other models? If this is so, I'm going to have to do some rebuilding.....bummer.

I tried to uninstall A:M since it had some install errors, but when I use the Uninstall Animation: Master thing it gets partway through before it says "Uninstallation could not occur due to an error.". Has anyone else had this problem or can anyone help me uninstall it? I'm running it on a Mac on Tiger, if that makes a difference. Also, the uninstaller says Uninstall AM 11.1, whereas I have 12.0 installed. Is there another uninstaller I need to download or something? I couldn't find a 12.0 uninstaller anywhere. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I was here a bit about a year and a half ago, and I'm getting back into animation again (finally cancelled my World of Warcrack account). I just wanted to say hi. Quick question about the excercises for the Art of certificate. Is it OK to go beyond what is specified in the excercise? For example, here [attachmentid=17244] is my Ex1, where I was playing with the camera angle going over rabbit's shoulder to look at Kee Kat in the dynamic pose. Will I get my golden checkmark for this, or should I play it a little closer to the guidebook? -Andy

Can anyone direct me to a tutorial that shows much of the functionality within the same tutorial? I have gone through many of the online tutorials and have a lot of AM videos and books (that I bought off the forum). The problem is, they only take you through certain sections of things. No one really guides you from start o finish and all the steps in between. I am still struggling to get AM into a workable situation for me. It doesn't have to be complicated...say maybe a football. If there was a tutorial from start to finish of a football with the texture, material, decals (I think that this the right terminology to put like an NFL logo on it), it would be so he…

Hi There, I'm having troubles adjusting path length verses choreography length. I start off with a new project and choreography, set the chor length to 15 seconds. Then create a simple path which is also 15 seconds. Drop an object (character) on it (I chose Turtle Tom from the Extras disk) and he moves along it just fine - does the whole path in 15 seconds (I haven't added the turtle walk yet). Now I extend the choreography length to 30 seconds, thinking the turtle will complete the path in 15 seconds, then stand still for another 15 seconds. The properties for Choreography Action 1 under both the Turtle Tom shortcut and under the Path shortcut show Chor Ran…

It's been a while since I've been on the forum, but I was away working on an idea for an animation that I intend to expand on. Now that I am back back, I have a question for anyone who can answer. I'm experimenting with smoke and I know how to work that. One thing I don't know how to do is to get smoke to start up after a certain period of time. I have an aircraft with missile bays. When the bays open, I have the missiles firing. That is when I want the smoke to start up and go. The plane will be moving too, obviously, and I don't think it would look to good with smoke coming ot of the fuselage in some random area. Anyone know how to work this? I'll put the missile video…

Hi guys, I was in the q and a this weekend and tried to ask this question, but I don’t think I communicated it very well. Attached below are scans off the tutorial I’m trying to follow. The main question is: How do I select modeling mode from inside the choreography? I can’t, it’s grayed out. What is bizarre is that somehow or other I got it to work briefly, I have no idea how… I was testing things out, pressing a number of options at the top and all of the sudden it became selectable. I selected it and started building the cube as instructed, and when I turned my head (or whatever), it went back to being unelectable, and the cube I had drawn could not be selec…

Concerning the models on the CD and Extras CD : it is often asked here about the rights of these models - can they be used in commercial productions... etc. etc. The answer seems to always be "check the notes in the model" and yet, for the life of me, I cannot find any notes for any models I have ever checked. I do not have the new DVD, but rather last year's Extras CD. This seems to be devoid of any notes, and it has me quite curious about the rights for certain models. Any information anyone has would help me out alot.

Downloaded v15 to replace my old v8.5 and found I can't use it because it is slow on my machine. For example, if I click and drag the bounding box of a character in choreography mode the move happens a few seconds after I released the mouse button. So, just as a check and before inflicting unfair injury upon my computer's innocence gland, I reloaded v8.5 and did the following; I set up a scene involving a character standing in front of a photograph and did a quick render with both versions. Time to render with v8.5 is 31.44 and v15 is 51.0, or near twenty seconds longer all things been equal. It would appear then that v15 is near twice as resource greedy as v8.5. A search…

Hello- While going through the AM 15 "textures" folder I noticed an atx file called "PenciSketch.atx". It sounded intriguing so I created a new material in the Project Workspace and tried to locate the atx file to load and test. I was unable to locate the "pencisketch.atx" file even though other files in the same texture folder like InkPen.atx, Watercolour.atx and Xray.atx are available through the Toonnation plug-in... Does anyone know how to locate the "PenciSketch.atx" file for loading? Many thanks! Tom

I have an issue with nulls, I have a bone, foot, that is already assigned to the control point and I created the null. And even if I have Attached to parent neither on nor off mater, once I try and control the null from the choreograph nothing happens. Basically I grab the cross and rather than move the foot, the cross just slides around. Check out the screen shot and see if there is something I am missing cause Ive worked with Poses and Bones before, but never had set up a null. Its my last peice of the puzzle then on my way to animating. As far as attached to parent, if you make that chenge do you have to re drop it into the choreograph?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I can't get a dark fog.... it either is bright or isn't there at all. Any help would be great, thanks, --Ross

Is there a way to assure that all cps are in one plane without making them snap to grid in all axes? In other words, if I have a rounded rectangle that I want all cps to be on the same plane without moving the corner points to a different location on the xz plane but I wanted them all to rest on the plane (because one or more cps is slightly offset in the y axis). Is it possible to bring that/those points to the same xz plane as the others without it moving in x or z axis, only the y axis. Man, this is hard to describe... the xz plane is a flat plane... like the ground (but ABOVE AND parallel to it). All the cps are where I want them in each axis EXCEPT y... …

I made a model of a simple power switch. I created a pose slider for the switch that involved rotating the handle 90 degrees. I works just fine except that as the slider, and the handle that it controls, moves, the scale of the handle shrinks by about 50% at about 50% then scales back to normal at 100%. Th only thing I did when creating the pose slider was rotate the handle. I'm using 15G but I ran into this problem some months ago when working on the "Boogie Meter" for Gene's Two Trains video, so I don't think it has anything to do with the new release. Probably something stupid I'm doing or not doing, but here's a few picks and the model. thanks. Power_Switc…

Hi, I'm starting to use A:M again having left 3D behind and returned to 2D. Now I'm determined to crack it. Previously I had managed to build models, but rigging was where I fell down. I now finally have my head around fan bones and have got them working successfully in the relationships window. Trouble is, if I create a new action or choreography using the model, the fan bones are there, but no longer have any effect. I'm sure there's a simple explanation, but I've tried all sorts of things. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I have been working on a practice choreography out of the David Rogers book. I initially set the time to be 5 seconds so that the flower sack action which is one second long, could hop across the screen 5 times. But the range setting for the choreography property keeps changing to 25 seconds. I change it, save the project, re-open it and the setting is back to 25 seconds. A:M 16 beta3

I've looked all over the forum and can't find anything that addresses this problem - Rabbit's legs wont Paste Mirrored. After frame 15, his ears, arms, feet and toes all swing along nicely (the feet sort of look like they're flailing about) but the legs stay in the same position they were in at frame 15. Jason told me that I have to move the leg bone to set a key frame for it. I went through all of my key frames moving the feet up and down and rotating them. Then I rotated the pelvis which moved the legs around a bit. I even rotated the knees with the arrow keys. I rebuilt the exercise from frame 1 along with the video tutorial, step by step. Hey, guys-- I'm trying out A:M for a logo design that has decaled typewriter keys followed by 2-D panels with type set up to be cookie-cutter panels. It all renders fine as a standard rendering, but I was hoping to get a toon line version as well. The problem is, when I render it as toon lines, the "panels" holding the cookie-cutter type render only as rhomboid panels, and the decaling and cookie cutting render not at all. Furthermore, the decals don't render. I figger I could get around this by recoloring everything white (the bg color) and rendering it with flat shading, so the labels show up, but I was wondering if there is a way to get toon line rend…

now what am i doing right (in racking up a fresh batch of newbie points); light affects model but not a prop. last time it was about light lists, so now i tried every option and ended up having to create a whole new light to believe that this is so. the prop does not receive light. and no, it's not black. the chor is saved as from another chor, prj from another prj that already rendered just fine. only thing i've changed is "lens" from 30 to 50, so that's hardly the solution. how do i troubleshoot this one?

Okay, this is prolly stupid, but... How does one save a .mov file? I have no trouble saving AVI files, but of course they're huge. (Just finished Ex. 6, it's 18meg) But when I try to do a compressed .mov file it only saves the last image rendered - not an animation. So what exactly are the steps? You may be as condescending as you choose, and I'll deal with it, as long as I get the answer. BTW I've tried it both with V13 and V14.

I have recently made a scene in which I used sprite particles to create leaves on a tree. On a still frame, I am happy with the results. However, since it is a particle system, if I jump to future frames, the leaves will move (according to the particle system). So here is my question: does anyone know a simple way to "freeze" a particle system, so that it looks the same regardless of time. I have the same problem when I was using a particle system to create clouds (how do I freeze the particle system so that the clouds are not moving from frame to frame). Any ideas? Thanks.
