I'm posting this mainly as a reminder to follow up on this. Attached is a comparison of two sound files. On the bottom, the original "I've got a Secret" audio and (above) a quickly edited version that accomplishes a few things: 1) Removal of unwanted noise 2) Adjusted timing 3) Adjusted volume* 4) Separation, removal of sound/sound bytes on a frame by frame basis 5) Keyframe and Spline-based refinement (Free!) *Appeared to work well but need more testing. Not yet explored in any depth but available for use: - Automatic Time Stretching (All or by Selection) - Integration with Papagayo and Magpie Pro Also attached are the original and updated wav…

Here's a video that is making the rounds. There is nothing particularly new represented here but it's a very nice and concise (even entertaining) look at the 12 principles of animation as outlined in Johnston and Thomas's book 'Disney's Illusion of Life. [vimeo]93206523[/vimeo] Direct link to video on Vimeo Note that at the end of the video there is a link to a tumblr site that doesn't appear to work. The correct address (that links to a webpage where each of the principles/examples is separated) is: http://the12principles.tumblr.com/

ILM released this short video today about the making of the New York scenes in the Avengers and holy crap, it's pretty mind blowing the amount of CG work and detail they put into it! I knew obviously some of it was CG, but I actually had no clue that it was almost entirely CG.

Just wanted to say a quick "thank you" to Rob for going to the trouble of running the image contests. It's always interesting to see the different themes and see what everyone comes up with. Thank you again, Rob, for your efforts.

I ran into this informative video and couldn't help but wonder if A:M suffers from a similar limitation. This video is lengthy, but if someone has the time to look through it, I'd like to find out if A:M might be set to the old sRGB scale and unable to rise to a better "Dynamic Range" for more realistic renders using a single sun light. Since I don't know a lot about the tech in these matters, I'm wondering if someone else might shed some light on whether A:M could be improved also like Blender is in this video. xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m9AT7H4GGrA

I wondered how it comes when I import models with the *.obj extention I often get a scrambled surface on the skin. For some reason the trivertices don't seem to fit in well and make bad shadows. Does this have a reason, for example the normals are not fit in well, or is it just because of the nature of the object files? Is there a way to get this effect blended so the surface rounds up well again?

Hello! Importing 3D models from polygons application, 3D scanner, or sculpt application pose many problems in AM. The high-definition models are too dense to be exploited, others require to be re-examined in the topology In reality it was better and faster when it is rethinking the topology in AM as a whole (patches, hooks, UV, joints, etc ....). Hence the usefulness of rotoscope, it is possible to import 3D informations: - By drawings (which requires a good knowledge of perspectiv) - With photos (with some imperfections because of the position shooting) - Or to import 3D models (scanner or other soft 3D) as props to make rotoscope. …

OK, So I want to export a model from A:M and import to Unreal Engine 4. However I have just tried exporting as an OBJ file and importing the model into UE4 and the mesh that is displayed in unreal has lots of holes in it. I am a big noob when it comes to this sort of thing so does anyone have any ideas on what I'm doing wrong here? two pics are attached. Thanks C

For those following the (general) software trend toward subscriptions etc. this may sound familiar... Autodesk has announced they will terminate 'upgrades' in 2015. What options are left for users of their products? Apparently, an annual purchase and/or subscription. Here's a write-up at AWN: (Link) The header: Much of this move is surely designed to catch more of the revenue stream generated as software is inevitably pushed downward (outward?) toward the periphery where lower end users will not pay thousands of dollars for software but pay more if spread out over a longer term. They have calculated that a greater saturation in the market w…

Hello Hashers- Just noticed a blurb about the upcoming new Pixar Movie, "Inside Out" coming out next summer. Looks pretty funny when you consider the premise and the voice actors. I don't know if anyone at Pixar saw this terrifc short: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JuyB7NO0EYY) before they formulated their movie, but both concepts look great. Tom

Have tried installing several older versions like the "yeti" which installs but won't run. Error says need to be administrator but "run as administrator" doesn't work either. there is no administrator on my PC just me. I once had this same version running on it for years but now can only install/run Master 99. any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a free program that might be useful for those that want to get at quad based topologies quickly. It's based on fairly recent paper about 'instant field aligned meshes' (Link to project page here: http://igl.ethz.ch/projects/instant-meshes/ Binary files are available for Windows, Mac and Linux here as is the source code: http://igl.ethz.ch/projects/instant-meshes/ The quick tests I did turned out quite good. DIsclaimer: Don't think this will keep your textures mapped.... it won't as it's not that kind of program but rather one that works deeply on topology.

This is a pretty good overview/intro to the concept and process of storyboarding: xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQsvhq28sOI It includes some reference work from some well known movies as well as storyboard examples from them. A key statement near the beginning is that artistic talent is not required to work out a storyboard. Often simple words a stick figures can be enough to capture the essentials. Added detail is primarily of importance when others involve themselves in a project.

Hi, It is funny how I always come back to AM, even with a few years break, for the simple pleasure of animating. Nothing beats its simplicity. I am using version 18.0p on Win 10. When I do a smartskin I would like to be able to track the movements of individual cp's in the graph window. That way, if there is an odd jerky movement of a cp i could smooth it out. But I can't see any way of bringing them up in the graph window. Is it possible? Kind regards Mike Logan

Hey guys when I have a shape which I have drawn out like so . . . And I want to attach another splines to it, the curve gets " disturbed " - is there any key etc. that I need to hold down so it keeps the existing curve on the second spline / object ?? Been a while but I remember it used to do this before too ?? Spline drawing would be awesome if it worked like illustrator . . . hmmmm . . . Just remembered that you can import AI into AM - but trying to create a surface by joining the shapes to create a mesh did the same thing last time I was building a model . . . please shed some light on this anyone ! Thanks in advance.

Hi all, I need to model an item with just a photo, and one measurement of a side of the item. I thought I could set up an choreography with the camera matching the perspective of the photo, then model the item there. But after an hour trying to set the camera, still no go. Anyone have done this before, or has this been discussed before? Cheers, Rijk

Hello All, It's been awhile since I used A:M. I wanted to try it out again so I signed up for the trail. I got my license file and instaledl A:M 18.0p. When I launch it I get an error about not being able to load the graphics assistance driver. Then I get a screen that says it couldn't load it. It then takes me to the options page where the Real-Time driver drop down is empty. By the way, what is difference between SSE4 and regular AM? I am using Mac OS X 10.11.5 (El Capitan) with 8G of RAM with a 2.3ghz i7 Any ideas? thanks, Tyson

Is there something you think can't be done in A:M that it ought to be able to do? Is there something you'd like to see figured out and explained? Perhaps A:M does it already but no one has tried it yet! Here is your chance to nominate a topic or task that you would like to see someone figure out how to do with A:M. I will choose one and make a WIP thread out of it in February 2014. The nominator of the chosen topic will receive some fabulous prize, possibly a copy of one of Martin Hash's "Memoirs" books. (Did you know there's three of them?) My Rules: -Task will be something reasonably appropriate for a full-featured 3D app like A:M. For example, "…

This is a growing trend and one we are likely to see a lot more of in the future. Of interest are two primary things: Raw production material for inspiration and study (and as starting point for other production) Looking behind the screen into how a production is planned and produced, studying the assets used and gaining insight into approaches used. A means of increasing value and return of revenue* Many of the assets used in a production will never been seen again and (rather sadly) will often be lost forever (especially in a digital world). Sharing of these assets can be a means to keep the originals intact as well as to maintain interest (current and historical) as…

If you like long articles with narrow focus, NY Times has one about the sudden influence of Japanese style in the 19th century How Japonisme Forever Changed the Course of Western Design Although it is not covered in this article I imagine the graphic flatness and clarity of Japanese drawing was some influence in moving newspaper cartooning away from the over-detailed and over-rendered style of a Thomas Nast in the later 19th Century to the simplicity of a George "Krazy Kat" Herriman in the early 20th.

Some of you may recall Jeffrey Dates 'Day Off the Dead' short from many years ago when he was an avid A:M user. Like many others Jeff used his time with A:M to move into the animation industry and is still quite active in animation. He has been working for The Mill of late and their efforts at The Mill to promote real time character animation has recently made the news https://www.cartoonbrew.com/vfx/how-the-mill-is-embracing-real-time-for-character-animation-157603.html

I don't recall seeing John Lasseter's Cal Arts video before. It's a fun little... at 5:25 minutes actually a rather lengthy... piece. xhttps://vimeo.com/86365423 There are many things that could be said of the short film but one is that... like everyone else who gets the itch to dive into animation... you've got to start somewhere. The prevalent thing on display in the short from my perspective is John's ability to imbue inanimate objects with character followed with a knack for putting those characters into a story with multiple emotional payoffs. Yet another is his extensive use of repetition. In this short... repetition is a major element handled ma…

I just bought the subscription version of AM, again. I didn't have to. I still had an active license. Get this, I bought it and there was NO LINK TO DOWNLOAD IT AT ALL!!!! I don't know who to talk to. I called the customer service line, no response. Someone needs to start waking people up. Saying that I am frustrated is an UNDERSTATEMENT. I AM LIVID. I am not going to request a trial version when I freaking bought a subscription.

Looks like Keith will be closing down his store for good on March 1. You can get his entire 61 video animation tutorial series for $19 Although he is not demonstrating in A:M almost all the concepts will translate to A:M. Some of the early videos suffer from primitive screen capture but they get better as he gets better at it. At that price, I can't imagine passing it up. If even one video is useful to you it's a bargain.

Shhhhh... keep this on the lowdown. Recently I was plugging Don Bluth's effort to get his traditional animation project off the ground and this relates to that in a way. How? Way back when, at Don's Masterclass one of the attendees was Keith Osborn who near the end of the course showed me a few secrets of a then hush hush project; Warner Bros Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote when they were first making the move to CG. The highlight of the animation was Keith's work with smears, duplicate limbs, etc. which were all pretty hard to do in most software in that timeframe. Well, seeing ample opportunity to spread the word on his approach and technique, Keith has publish…
