-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).

-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Hello, I'm looking to purchase A:M and I was wondering if there were walkthroughs so I can make movies like Conrad Chow's Snapshots or if I could record my nephew being chased by dinosaur. Can you just put that dinosaur into your home movie? or are those guys just too good at animation and they are pro. I have no background in animation but I would like to make those movies just for fun. Thanks in advance. Have a great weekend.

While working through this exercise I have found that when the animation is played the door starts slowly opening from frame one until the end of the sequence even though I have not animated it until the middle of the sequence. How would I make it so that the door does not move until the middle of the sequence? Thank you for your help.

Hello, I am looking for a 3D character animation software that can export into Flash which is may main platform. Can AM export the animation as a sequence of images (Lightway can)? I am aware of the AVI export option and Flash capability to import AVI. importing discreet images would be more useful for me. Any comments/suggestions?

i can make eyes, and now a decent mouth; but my weakness (besides connecting a face) is making a good nose. i can make one without nostrils, but since i'm aiming for semi-real, i do want the characters to have nostrils. i've tried drawing the nose from a profile view, i've tried drawing the bottom of the nose and extruding it upwards (it works but the bottom turns out flat and the nostrils don't show) and i've tried drawing it flat and then bringing it outwards. That one worked the best, but the nostrils end too big (which might be okay for some noses but not all) i need to know do any of you have any other tricks or techniques for making a nose?

I have a client that I am making a character for and she wants the eyes to be able to change from white to black when angry. The problem is I have a decal applied to the eye that has a white background when I make an action to make the eyes black you can see the white background of the decal. Is it possible to apply a decal w/ a transparent background? Or does anyone have any ideas how I can make this work? Thanks - Eric

Last time I tried (this isn't a real example I'm talking about) I had issues going from one action to the next. The scenerio is a character walks up to something, and then grabs it, much like in the door-opening tutorial. But in that tutorial I used no walk cycle, and animated each step one at a time. In a larger setting it seems it's harder to control precision movements from the choreography mode, largely because my character is no longer perfectly centered on axis, and the keypad no longer gives me clean perspectives to adjust the position from. So I've been exploring walk-cycles and pre-constructed actions. My problem was that once the walk cycle ends, it…

Hello! I'd like some advice on how to achieve these two lighting effects: 1) I'd like to create an effect that projects light as if it's being passed through a "bar" filter (or like the bars of a window). Example below, with the "light bars" across the subjects' eyes: 2) I'd like an effect of light showing though clouds or fog, so that you can see the rays. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks! T

Dear Animation Masters, I am using Zbrush to make models and texture them as low rez poly cages, creating displacement maps to add detail and would like to import them into AM and use the displacement maps. Are there any plugins around that are recommended for this process? Also, I have spline models in IGES format, would they import as spline objects in AM using a plugin? Thanks for any suggestions, Sincerely, Michael Angelo

Seriously $100 is amazing and a GREAT marketing scheme esspecially for those people that love this program (I being one of them and I don't even have it yet, I'm watching the demo videos). It makes Hash Inc some more money and it doesn't break the accounts of the users. A great deal and fantastic work Hash Inc. Has it always been like that? (I can't wait to get this proggie...)

I am in the Technical Reference manual studying the section "Hair Material with Multiple Attributes" page 39. I understand how hair works and how to set up a hair system, but for the character I am working on now I want to step it up a notch. The sample has a hair system with a CellTurb combiner with 2 different colors to give it a great 2 tone more realistic look. I added the Hair system w/ 2 emitters (one grey) and added the cellTurb with 2 attributes - similiar to what they did - orange and brown. The image I have below look nothing like the realistic fur ball in the book... what am I not getting here? Thanks - Eric

I'm not a new user but this seems the most appropriate place to ask(?) I have a character and I made some shades for her. It would be fine if I just assigned them to the head bone of the rig but If I want to have the flexibility to have them moveable in an action how should I constrain them ? Would it be best to have them as an action object. If so how should they be constrained to the head ? or I've tried to assign the shades to bones in the original mode but don't know how to constrain them to the head in the action. Is it a parenting question ? Thank you for your help simon

John Bailey Exercise 1 4/10/06 Here's my first submission. Hope everything works. I wasn't quite sure what the assignment was exactly, so the I just formed the pose by using only the Pose sliders. I did cheat a little to get both of Keekat's feet aligned on the ground (the rig slider leaves his right foot slanted and that bothered me). I didn't animate him. http://media.putfile.com/Exercise-1-44

I was doing the Tutorial:Flower Power, but I am stuck when it says: "Make groups and name them for the leaves, bud, stem and petals" How I can manage to acomplish that? I don´t know how to make groups I don't know either how to add an element to a group: i.e. I am trying to apply the same color to the Petals, but two petals don`t get the color, so how can I add these two 'loose' petals to the Petal group? I was watching the video tutorial, but I didn't see/hear anything about the groups Thanks

Hi all - I am having a little problem with constraining an object to a path then making that object start later in the choir - If I make a path - select my object and apply a constrain to path and select the path everything is fine - I can scrub my choir and the object moves along the path - when I adjust the "Ease" so that the object stats further down the path - then scrub the choir - my object no longer moves - if I reset the "Ease" back to "0" and scrub my choir - the object still does not move - the only way I can make the object move is to remove the constrain to path and re apply it. Any help on what I might be doing?? thanks, …

I'm a retiree looking to expand my creative juices. For years I have dabbled in photography/videography, video editing, and simple graphic work. The A:M application really caught my eye, and I will probably purchase it. I've gone thru most all of the information on Hash's home page, including the tutorials. It looks like I should be able to get a handle on the operational techniques. How far I'll be able to go with it depends on my commitment and interest. (and lasting brain cells!) But my question is, how well will my little puter handle the application and it's rendering chores? I'm running an iMac with PowerPC G4, 800 MHz; 768 MB SDRAM; 60 Gig; OSX 10.4.8. …

Simple question I'm sure but one that seems to be eluding me...: I am extremely impressed with this software but am having an issue with decal setting onto a model. If I position the decal it sets and looks great. If i save the model for later use, the decals are gone when I re-open the model and I can't figure out why. The file name of the decal still shows in the decals folder, but the image no longer appears on the model. To use the decal in the choreography, I have to first open the model, then open a new choreography, then re-apply the decals individually and then choreograph the production. Not impossible for some simple projects, but mind numbing for the dec…

I need to know if there is a difference between hiding a model vs making it 100% Transparent. I have a rig for a camera that simulates a Jib and dolly. I need to see the jib when setting up the camera moves. But I know that render times decrease when there are less patches or models in the chor. Because the rig will never be seen in the final render I need to find out the most efficient way to make it disappear easily. I could hide the model in the modeling window before I render Or I could make it 100% Transparent. I prefer the transparency method because I can create a Pose to easily turn off and on. However Hiding it in my mind assures me that AM i…

Can someone please help? Ive been watching A:M tutorials for past few months, even read the manual online. I now have a new computer running win 7 and brand new A:M. Both 2 days old YAY! Ive used Maya and Bryce for years and dying to get into A:M now. For some reason my render Bounding Box shows solid (or last rendered pic underneath) when i drag a box. This also happens when selecting splines or points. I looked thru tools/options but couldnt find anything. I also tried running A:M in XP mode 32 bit and had same solid bounding box. Can anyone help? I've got a very detailed photo-realistic facial mesh that I'm trying to re-fit to a 3ds prop that's a 3D scan of an actual person, I then have high resolution flat lighting orthogonal photos that I'll be using as decals... The eyes, nose, mouth, and ears are obvious things to group and move around to match their positions on the actual face, so I've made groups for these and the surrounding patches. Later on the eyes, nose, mouth, and ears will have to be tweaked, adjusted, and (possibly) remodeled (a bit) to closely match the real person - but I'm just wanting to get them into the right relative positions to start. The problem I'm running into is that as I move…

A few days back I was advised to obtain the setup machine for use with my simple models. I did this and have spent a few days trying to install the rig into the model. .. with not a lot of luck. I follow the tutorial through steadily and get all the way through to the point of installing the final rig. That process goes through but, when I try to use the result, there is an error listed in the PWS, "Error Loading String 5003" When I try to use the figure in an action the cp's in the mesh don't seem to be affected by the bones so that, for example, when I move the bones in the arm the mesh just stays in the standard T position. When the pelvis is moved, l…

I am adding some decals to models and have started to see a new problem (many decals done in the past and didn't come across this issue) The decalling is straightforward, no unusual requests, just a PNG or Jpeg to apply to a model surface. During application, it goes as planned. In model mode, it looks fine, but when rendered, I see streaks of the decal color bleeding onto other sections where I did not apply the decal. I'll try and upload an example. Any tips as to where I'm causing this? As usual, I appreciate all the help. Glider

Will importing a saved model file from your local disk screw up a project, such that you get the problems with prior versions losing their changes? I thought this only happened if you saved something from the project as a model file. So I am assuming it goes the other way as well? Or am I wrong here? Because I just imported an eyeball model from the extras, it turned my entire penguin orange (not sure why but it looks like it applied the beak color to the entire body) and then when I went back a version the penguin was also orange. The version before that is ok, and I didn't lose much in the way of work but this makes things difficult. I guess I will have to…

What is the best way to start or Plan an animation short? Would I get the backgrounds, props and etc. set up first? Or do the animation first and add the other stuff later? Also is it better to do a shot by shot animation and render it all together later? Which Programs (I.E. Photoshop Vegas, Illustrator) are best for this type of animating? I know Lots of questions, and probably 10 times as many answers, but I need a little suggestive help to find the best way for me to get an organized approach to starting and completing an animation. Any tuts out there would be helpful too. Thanx

So far nothing has stumped me as much as this one--- I would like my particle emitter (smoke) to begin on <x> frame. How can I do that? Every time I try something, it just keeps blowing out smoke starting on frame one and ending on the last.
