I've been using v18.0p for a month or so now and I've noticed that pasting even small chunks of patches takes what seems to be an unusually long time. For instance, a copy of the side window on this fare box: It's only four patches but when you hit Cntl-V it takes more than 15 sec. of the rotating "working" icon before it actually pastes a copy of those four patches. In v17 this same process takes less than a second. Is there a v18 switch I'm unaware of that is creating extra "bookkeeping" to go on in the background?

When looking at the change log page at Mantis/Reports, it appears there allready is a version 18 e? But the latest downloadable version is 18 d... I just wanted to test if the fixes in 18 e, has made the ugly d-version crashes go away on my computer. Is there an adress where I can download 18 e (maybe as a beta)?

Hello- I noticed this effect in the fantastic animated clip entitled "The Tale of the Three Brothers" from a Harry Potter's film. Her dress shatters as the character dies and if you notice, her dress shatters as small rectangles. My question is, is there a way to have a model shatter but customize the shapes of the exploding pieces? Let's say that you want the dress to explode like the different suits of a card deck (attached)...is that possible? Is there some way to pre-cut the exploding parts (with a cookie cutter map or...?) (Maybe a Live Saturday chat topic?) Thanks for any help! Tom Shatter.mp4

I suppose all of you have had to fix bad spline flows like the ones in the attached image to avoid those ugly creases. (I mean actual modelling, not porcelain.) How would you correct each of these cases? How would you like to be able to do so with a single click? Is there a recipe that would suit everyone?

Kudos to Steffen for the recent improvements in OBJ texture importing in v18p. Thanks! And to make this something of a useful topic... here's something related to consider... There are a gazillion models out there on the internet to play with but I recently tested some of the Models donated to the Sweet Home 3D community. The process is pretty straightforward: download the library of models, open them in Sweet Home 3D, export as OBJ, import into A:M. The models page: http://www.sweethome3d.com/freeModels.jsp The program download: http://www.sweethome3d.com/download.jsp What is particular useful with the program is how you can use it to recolor/…

A:M won't launch. The splash screen appears for a few seconds, then disappears and the software is no longer active. A:M version: 17.0g Mac OS 10.6.8, Macbook Pro 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB ram Tried trashing prefs, tried a fresh install, and tried rebooting. Don't know what else to try. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I was just going through some of the old Character Rigging tutorials that Raf Anzovin compiled for Animation:Master back in the early 2000's and remembered that Anzovin Studios, which currently produce a set of killer rigging/animation plug-ins for Maya, began by programming for and working with A:M. Does anyone know if The Setup Machine can still be found anywhere for A:M or if it even would still work? If not, has anything come along since then that assists with the rigging process for humanoid and non-humanoid characters? Just puzzling...

Building a townscape for the new. Happy Families, project I'm hoping to set up the lighting this evening. In 3ds max ( many moons ago ) there was a "sun" seting so you could specify where the location was and what time of day, then the software would produce a sun effect for those settings. Working in V17, is there an equivalent in AM or, is there a global illumination setting. If so, could somebody kindly point me in the direction of the info on how to set it up and use it? What I'm after is a single light source, giving a, very rough, approximation of daylight. Rather than have to introduce lots of lights. simon

I made the transition to WIn10 on my PC at the beginning of June and installed A:M ver.18.0m shortly there after. I've had almost no teething problems for the last two weeks but this occurred after yesterdays' Windows update which may just be a coincidence. This is a screen grab of a realtime render and a good approximation of a final render. This is a screen render in Render Lock mode. This is a screen render in Render mode. I upgraded my Nvidia graphics drivers and re-installed ver. 18.0m without solving the problem. This doesn't happen in ver. 17. I see that Hash Reports is currently broken so I'm open to suggestions.

What do I do to make A:M read and write a custom model or animation format? For example, suppose I want to use A:M to make animations for a game engine. In Blender, I write a Python script. How do I go about this in A:M? I skimmed through the tech reference document but wasn't able to find anything about file I/O plugin support.

Hello all, boy has it been ages. I have these models I wish to export as .obj files, but I have no idea how to do it. I looked around online, and got no viable answers. I wanted to export them as .obj files to fiddle with in other programs, which accept such files. Nothing accepts .mdl files. Anyone wish to help me out? I am using A:M version 15, which by the looks of things is fairly old. It sounds viable, as others have mentioned being able to export as .obj files, but I am unsure if it is limited to newer versions of A:M or if there is a step I am missing. Thank you!

Hi everybody, this thread here is more or less a placeholder for my benchmark tests and more stuff I am currently at with my new computer based on a AMD Ryzen 7 1700 concerning A:M. Currently there is not much to see here, but stay tuned . In the help for A:M 10.5 there is reference to surface properties Average Normals and Normal Weight. I can't seem to find them the the properties for an object I have in a Model window. The reference says: I read some other posts that say you need to toggle "Render As Lines" on the group under "Groups" for your model, and then the properties will show up. Hasn't worked for me. Also, some suggest you need to first apply the Porcelain material to your model. I did that (dragged onto model), but still don't see the "Average Normals" property, and do not see these properties anywhere. Is there an "Advanced" mode I need to engage to see these propert…

Have an old model that works in AM 18f (rig) but falls apart once it is saved in 18f 'new format'. So what has changed? Not being a rigging person I have no idea what has failed. (its an old Eggprops character model). Being an Eggprops commercial model I don't think I can share it (Reixcherub model for anyone who still remembers it) Cheers

So lately in V18p, I've been crashing over and over when moving bones to different locations in the PWS bone tree. I click on a bone and drag it to the new location and A:M crashes. It doesn't happen everytime, so I haven't been able to solidly replicate it. But when I'm moving bones in the PWS it crashes. I have noticed that if I'm moving with the CTRL button to duplicate a bone it sometimes happens as well. Anyone else dealing with such an issue.

I find that some obj models simply refuse to import/ convert into A:M even if their file size/ complexity is radicaLLY reduced in the exporting APP. I would expect long conversions for high meg files, but these are as low as 3-9 megabyte obj models. I'm sure that there are many factors that I'm unaware of in this process, but at the same time much more complexed models transfer easily at times. I wonder how to improve this if possible. I'm happy to have the obj import option for sure, but it just won't import certain models. It seems to hate any triangles whatsoever. Would love to hear how you other guys are importing obj's, 3ds's, etc.

I'm not sure if I can make it to the Q&A tomorrow, but I need to create Sea floor caustics. In other apps, this is done by what is known as a "Gobo" light. Basically you use a spotlight{"Kleig") and place an animated image map in front of it. The image is set to only let light pass through the light areas....much like A:M's Transparency Map type. The animated image is pre-created with turbulent combiners to get a Caustic look. When the light shines through the image, it makes caustics on the surfaces below. Has anyone done this in A:M? Can it be done like this in A:M?

Wasn't sure where to post this so I posted it here as I will be refering to AM. GPU rendering. Is it faster and if so are there any plans to incorporate this feature into AM? If it was implemented I would pay a little extra to get the functionality. I think GPU rendering, if faster, would be worth more on the over head price of AM. ...any thoughts???

For the next unit on the course I'm doing I would like to use frame rate of 50fps ( Pal x2 ). I think this is possible in AM but, are there complications playing it back afterwards on other peoples equipment ? I don't play games mysef but do know (?) that quite a few play at 50fps or higher, is that dependent on the graphics card fitted, the compression codec, both or something else altogether ? simon

I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but it seems as though SSS negates smoothing using "averaged normals" or Porcelain (same thing done as a material). Also, "average normals" and Porcelain appear to give slightly different results even though they should be the same. Anyone know how to get around this? Here are some examples (the names of the files denote the settings):

Trying to help a coworker struggling with getting transparency in 3DS. He saved out a model as an .obj, I brought it into v.16 and when I dropped it into a chor, I had live surface settings to mess with. this is pretty huge, don't know if this has been in there for awhile but it's great. Oddly, they're available only on the chor shortcut, not on the model itself.

I would like to know if anyone has experience with loading Motion 5 tracking information so I may animate an object from that tracking info? 2. Has anyone worked on using A:M to animate an object in a video using tracking? Would you like to share your experience? Thank you! -charlie

Sorry for the novel here. My team is nearing the end of post on our current film, and A:M's renderer has been on my mind a lot recently. I'd like to frame these notes as constructively as possible. Since it's gotten so long, I'll throw in some Big Headings for readability--and in hopes of making myself feel really important. The Bottleneck All of my films and many of my illustrations have featured A:M in one form or another. It's my utility knife app. I continue to find it an extremely powerful, user-friendly full stack modeling/rendering/animation package at an admirable price. It's beginning to show its age though. A 3D package is only as good as its out…

Hey- anyone noticed the 'depth images' that are all the rage on Facebook right now? Here is a instructional sheet (not mine) I found regarding how to do it, and of course my first thought is... we can do this in A:M really easily with the depth map render! I am out the door for the weekend or I would whip one up... anyone else that wants to be the 1st- HAVE AT!!! The Facebook depth effect is an image that as you scroll over it... on your phone or desktop, appears to have a multi-plane that is driven by your scroll. The image is built by Facebook as you load-up 2 images... your RGB color image and a depth greyscale image.

What's a good (and hassle-free) way to hard-bake an animation? I mean that the result should be the following: All visible transforms from the original animation are recorded to bone channels. All relationships such as IK and constraints are stripped from bones so that only the direct transform animation kicks in. I tried Bake All Actions, but it didn't give me the results I needed. It appears that this command doesn't really bake all relationship-driven motions: if you delete the model's relationships, the "before" and "after" animations are different. I need this "barebones" motion for my action importer. When I import simple FK-only animations, the import results l…

I had said I was going to do "cloth" as the topic of my next "It Can't Be Done" series but that is looking to be a major endeavor I don't have time for right now. I hereby re-open the table for nominations. If you have a smaller-scale miracle that you'd like to see done in A:M, suggest it below! If you suggested something last time around and are still interested in that topic, re-nominate it! I will pick one based on based on my own judgement of general interest and feasibility and the winner will, of course, receive their choice of memoir by Martin D. Hash! If, by chance, you missed the previous "It Can't Be Done"... check it out!

Hey Everyone. I have a chain of bones. (Bone 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.) I'm constraining them to a spline using a path constraint. I want them to move along the path keeping their distance. But when I constrain each bone to the path, they attach to the same start point right on top of each other. Is there a way to offset each bone so that the chain does not group together to follow the path? Thanks, William

This is a puzzle for me and I really need the answer. Concerning mdd import export. When you import an .mdd file, does it only work on an .obj model import.......as a prop for instance. Or can you import an mdd and have it work on the hash model. This is what I use to think: 1. In exterior App I can export a model as an obj and import it into hash via the obj import wizard.(results in a hash model version) 2. In exterior App also export an mdd file with motions. 3. Import the mdd file onto the new hash model created in step 1. HOWEVER....I can't get this to work. What's more puzzeling is that I can export an mdd from a Hash model in A:M. Bu…

I've played with Hair a few times and then put it back in the box because i could never get it to work. So I tried again today and it worked perfectly, until I turned motionblur on. The first subframe renders perfectly but then the geometry moves while the hair stays static on individual frames, causing it to intersect the geometry. I ran some tests by rendering without motion blur, with motion blur, with motion blur added in post(the best option), and lastly by rendering at 120fps without motion blur and then combining frames to create motion blur manually. The last option works but seems to add extraneous jitter to the hair, although this may just be my settings. …
