I started on a learning project. I want to light a dance floor in a scene. Just starting to play with lights and the effects they have. I can see in my head the dance scene in Saturady Night Fever how the floor lit up. In a couple of test of placing a light under the flooring in the scene the light was not bright in the middle of the bulb. I can not the effect I want. Anyone have a suggestion? I have included a test shot. The trim rings are set for the colors of the lights and used as a guide. But as you can see the light is dark in the center of the light where it should be the brightest. What am I doing wrong? Steve

I am starting a new project. I have modeled an easel and wanted to place a light at the top. I have model a glass canopy on the light and have placed a light / bulb in the canopy. I have a couple of questions. I want the canopy to glow from the light / bulb. How do I do this? I want the bulb to mimic a real bulb and shine downward as a result of the canopy. Can you help me on this? Here is a render of the start of lighting the scene. thanks Steve

Hi, I'm in the middle of an animation project for a friend. This is an intro movie for his ministry. The camera flies past all the names of the countries he is ministrering in then into a room with some sort of logo. I have the walls as white as I'm going for avery clean modern look. This is my first go at this sort of thing and I was wanting to see if there was any ideas out there for lighting a white room like this one. So far I've got the names walls more or less where I want them. I started adding some lights but couldn't really get a good realistic feel to the image. I've attached the project file. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks. -B…

I'm trying to find the optimum lighting settings for this character. I've no problem with the keylight but the Fill and Rim wash out the shadow cast onto the ground. How can I fix this? Also, this will be a toon character, but when I render these settings in toon, it looks totally different. It seems the settings don't transfer. For example, the rim light doesn't just light the side, it also lights the front!

I am playing around with spotlights (klieg) and the source they come from. I made a box with a small translucent dome in the front of it. Inside the box I put a telephone - all for experimentation purposes only. In an action window I put a "bulb" light source in the dome and a klieg just in front of the dome. The klieg has volumetrics turned on to see a nice beam coming from the box. The illusion is to make the viewer believe the beam is eminating from the light source in the box through the dome to the outside. The dome has glow turned on. When I do a Q render in the action window, everything looks pretty good - the telephone can be seen throught the translu…

Over the past couple of years and I have used the standard lighting setup. Over the past couple of weeks I have been playing with lights. I have a couple of questions. I am building a room with can lights (recessed lighting in the ceiling). I want the can lights to light the room in an addition I will have a fill light such as a lamp. When lighting a room such as this 1. Is it best to light from the model, action, chor? If you light within the model I have had some issues trying to get enough light in the room. In the chor it is tough to position the light and you have to add to the model for each chor. 2. I remember the Yves did a tutorial on ligh…

Ok, I'm trying to setup my choreography using a smaller mini-sub that I built. As you will see in the "mini-sized" movie clip the sub comes towards the camera from a distance passing over head, the problem is after the sub passes by- the two lights from the front of the sub re-appear and look like they're moving away from the camera. I though originally that the lights in the sub model had corrupted themselves somehow and so I made a new model using just a light this time. In the Project file I'll post shortly; although the light is behind the camera if you look through the camera it appears that the light is in front of the camera. Is this some sort of funky mirror…

This question is for Sebastian Pfeiffer, winner of image contest: What lighting setup did you use for your image of the cartoon characters? Or possibly, are the characters shading in a particular way? or was just diffuse, ambient and specular colors used? I ask, because, I'm liking the way the characters come across in your image. I'm trying to achieve a look very similiar to what yours displays, but perhaps with a bit more specular or highlighted areas on my characters. Thanks in advance for any information. To admins: I wasn't sure where to post this sort of question, so if it needs to be moved, I'll understand. Thx

Here is an image from a lighting study. I am trying to get better at matching shadows and lighting properties with background images. This one shows me with an old friend I met while hiking (I'm the one on the left in the picture). People who have been around long enough will probably remember the other guy as Ted from the Hash character set in the 2004-2006 time frame.

I just modeled one of those lightning balls, I had one in my room and I thought it would be a cool prop. Here what it is if you dont know what I'm talking about... http://storeforknowledge.com/itemdetails.cfm/ID/616 (Lightning Ball) The one I modeled is at the bottom, anyways I have all of the materials and everything on it except for the 'electricity'. What would be the best way to make it? I have been playing around with different stuff and I just want another opinion. Thanks in advance, and hope you like it so far !!

Hi everybody Brandon's plasma ball gave me some ideas for a lightning model with sliders that control different strikes. I plan on adding a light to the model for the light flashes that's keyed to the strike within the same slider. Right now I justed keyed the light in the choreography. Here's the test movie. Any suggestions welcome.

Hi. I'm working on a lip sync segment and I have a question on how others do the syncing. I stared with 3 +/- mouth poses, smile/frown, open/closed, and ooo/aaa, then used these to make the 9 Preston Blaire phonemes. After creating the dope sheet, I found it took a lot of tweeking to get it looking good and I got realy confused trying to adjust all the channels. What I ended up doing is not using a dope sheet and just animating to the sound track using the 3 basic mouth poses. This worked better and was much faster; lesson learned. I am just wondering how others do their lip syncing.

NOTE: I originally posted this on page 3 of the "My first spline head" thread, but now think that may doom it to obscurity .... so here it is by itself. Please take a look at this 10 second (2.6Mb - QT Sorenson 3) lipsync clip and fire away with suggestions. It's definitely time for some objective input! Lighting and textures were not my main focus here. I just wanted to try my hand at lipsync first, test my rig, and learn the interface. http://www.scc.net/~mbs/lipsynctest16.mov Also, I'd like to compress this further to get below the 1Mb file size limit so I can post it on this forum and not on a separate web page. What's the best format to use?

Here's a quick screenshot of the lipsync interface I just finished. It's modeled after Jason Osipa's "Stop Staring" book, and uses the example of William Young's project file at this link: http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showt...&hl=osipa's Each null visible on the right controls anywhere from 2-4 pose sliders. The individual right and left poses are still controlled via the pose slider window. After some texturing and lighting adjustments I'll be starting the lipsync project. Comments and suggestions welcome.

I've just finished creating the phoneme's for my character and just had to try and figure out how this stuff works, so i Watched the "can you say that" video tut and attempted to make my own, a couple hours later out came this: Clip (890Kb Divx 5.03) Any feedback would be more than welcome I must say how impressed I am with A:M's implementation of the dopesheet etc etc..it was as easy as it appears in the video. However I did wind up with a bunch of keyframes that fall inbetween frames, is that normal? Laters

Thats the question i ask myself, because i want to do something using liquids, and i hope that i dont have to go along the old try'n'error road. Cheers Heiner There u go: What parameter will i have to crank if i want to have a contious flow of liquid and not only droplets? Or has that something to do with the general size used in the scene?

Here's something I made really quick after seeing one of the animations on the Maxwell website. The topic is in the OT section, you should check it out. Anyways, it made me want to try to mimic liquid with a:m, this is the best I could do but I'm still playing around with it, I'll post some other things later if I get something cool . All it is is a model of a wineglass with a seperate model for the wine with a seperate bone. The wine tilts with the glass because of the bone, but the surface of the liquid is cloth with gravity turned off and a force to give the surface ripples. Its nothing special but it looks cool, although I wish you could see the ripples better…

This is meant to be a little demonic imp that flaps around and acts as a mascot for another as-yet-unmodelled character. The funny thing is that I just recently had some new insight into the A:M modelling process. Tonight I took this partially done model, that had been sitting on my hard drive for a few months, and added the wings and legs - and the bat wing skeleton is probably the most complex splinesmanship I've done in A:M. I managed it in about twice my usual modelling speed -Sean Givan

Hi, This is a video I made for my church. It features my pastor, Brian, and his secretary and some standard models from the A:M CD. It was supposed to be shown during a service about overcoming fear. However, when we previewed it on the big screen in the church, there was a very little girl in the audience who ran out screaming when she saw the knight running...so it did not get shown that day. Hopefully it'll appear at another time. Not the greatest synching in the world, I know, animation wise, but I sort of like it... I also have it out on YouTube at: if you prefer to watch it there.ScaryDream.mov

I know ya'll like these so I'll post this as bad as it is. I can post this cause you really make out the details from here. David http://www.dustinproductions.com/files/pd-7-7-06.m1v

I've shot some video with my daughter in an attempt to master mixing live DV video with AM. My technique: I am having my daughter use a painted popcan the same color as the main color of my CG popcan as a prop. Using BINK/SMACKER tools, I am converting the avi video uncompressed single frame images using the BLEND method of deinterlacing. I then use PHOTOSHOP to fill in the purple popcan the rest of the way (pretty easy with the paintcan and adjusting tolerance along the way since it is the same color). Then, using EYEBATCH, I am changing this purple color to an ALPHA channel. All this is plastered onto a flat grid in AM in COOKIE CUTTER mode. I then have the CG…

Full scenes aren't something that i can do often, due to school and things like that any time i try to start something i normally end up ending it. this time i plan to finish it, so I'm starting out pretty simple. I'm using animation:master and made the models pretty quick starting out with the arm chair and making the other chairs from that model, the table i had already modeled a while back. then i found some textures on the net for the floor and walls which i used as bump maps. it should be obvious that this is a test render just using one klieg(spot) light. the painting on the wall(if your wondering) is a Vincent Van Gogh painting(can you guess what it is?). i might c…
