It appears to be official. https://www.awn.com/news/disney-buys-fox-52-billion-deal For Fox's part this seems like a new way of splitting shares while maximizing profits as just prior to the merger Fox will split the parts of Fox that cannot be merged into a newly branded company. On the comics and cartoon front it would appear that X-Men are now back in the fold with Marvel/Disney... so look for cross overs in the future... once the legal dust has settled. And now Mickey can hang out with Homer Simpson.

I just recieved a note from Sherm Cohen that he'll be removing his Storyboard Q&A video to make room for his next online class. So go see it now or you may miss it. http://storyboardclass.com/q-and-a/ Note: I haven't purchased his DVD set (yet) but it's a great deal. Highly recommended.

A site I like to keep an eye on is 'floobynooby' which collects a lot of animation related content similarly to sites such as onanimation.com Quite often the links that appear on one site will appear on the other. Every now and then however the content differs and I'm reminded again why I visit both onanimation.com and floobynooby.com regularly. In this case the posting of the first part of a three part analysis of the cinematics of PIXAR's 'Incredibles': http://floobynooby.blogspot.com/2013/12/th...les-part-1.html For anyone interested in filmmaking and animation, the article is well worth taking the time to purview. Folks pay good money for this kin…

I just bought the subscription version of AM, again. I didn't have to. I still had an active license. Get this, I bought it and there was NO LINK TO DOWNLOAD IT AT ALL!!!! I don't know who to talk to. I called the customer service line, no response. Someone needs to start waking people up. Saying that I am frustrated is an UNDERSTATEMENT. I AM LIVID. I am not going to request a trial version when I freaking bought a subscription.

For those of you that keep track of file formats and other technical aspects of the trade you may want to watch the glTF (Open GL Transmission Format) standard as it seems to be gaining a lot of traction especially in light of current interest in augmented (and virtual) reality. Perhaps more specifically, flTF optimizes assets for rendering instead of modeling frameworks; primarily via JSON (Javascript Object Notation). Of interest, glTF is not a file format so much as it is a scheme to move 3D data from file formats into a standard encoding that can be compressed/decompressed for transmission (primarily over the internet). The example used is that of other standard…

LIteManager Pro is another one of those free offers from Shareware On Sale that might be useful. I figure at this time if the folks at SOS want to take over my computer they've already got enough software on my systems to do that so... what the heck. There are many benefits to having a remote control application such as LiteManager. This application is in the same general category as others such as Team Viewer which allow another person access (of various types) to another computer. That access can be limited to simply viewing, projecting a demonstration, transferring files and taking over full control. Scary stuff no? This is the type of software that is usef…

I thought this was an interesting breakdown of Lord of the Rings characters and their movement through time: http://xkcd.com/657/ Starwars, Jurassic Park, etc. included too. There are a lot of other visual breakdowns of time/space on the site. The reason this appealed to me was that I have at various times roughed out stories in a similar way via A:M splines.

As a kid in the late fifthies/early sixties, I loved watching a stop motion series of very short films on danish tv, starring a dog made of folded (origami style) paper. I think it was british, and each sketch started with a man's hands folding the dog, which then came to life. No dialogue as far as I remember. I have tried to google it, but can't find anything. Could be fun to watch it again. Any of you know the animations?

What is larger than a nanosecond but shorter than a second? If Facebook (and presumably others) have their way it is a 'flick'. A flick is defined as: 1 flick = 1/705600000 second Somewhat usefully (mathematically) a flick can "in integer quantities exactly represent a single frame duration for 24hz, 25hz, 30hz, 48hz, 50hz, 60hz, 90hz, 100hz, 120hz, and also 1/1000 divisions of each." This helps with conversions of frequencies and image/audio sync. One potentially useful bit of information I saw outlined in the write up on flicks is this on the NTSC standard of 29.97 frames per second... something I have always thought was painful to consider: …

Hmmm... looks intriguing. As it is already funded and still has 18 days to go... I might have to bite at this one. Although in many ways this is more of a novelty item it does have some practicality to it also. This might be primarily of interest for those of you with a desire for a Cintique but a budget closer to an iPad. Of interest to me is how this effort actually helps to bridge the gap between old 2D methodology and the newer digital approaches. I have no idea what I did or what changed, but now when I'm modeling and I select a control point or group of control points, and then go into turn mode to rotate the view, the view does not rotate around the selected control points, but rather around the center XYZ origin for the entire modeling window. This may or may not have anything to do with it - I noticed the change after installing v18k. I doubt this has anything to do with it, since I uninstalled the whole program and then installed the version I had previously, v18j, and I'm still having the same problem. I have an old CD version installed as well, 11.1, and I do not have this problem with it.

I mentioned this briefly in the plugins topic but want to separate it because I think it is one of those 'features' anyone with time and patience can create. There also could be potential benefits in the realm of plausible/physical based rendering/lighting, etc. Furthering the initial questions I find myself wondering if a variant of the spinning light trick, used for global illumination might be shoehorned in such a way as as to create environmental data used for positioning, lighting and... more esoterically... heat. (This even harkens back to a very old posit on albedos... not taken seriously... which interestingly is now at the fore in physically based rendering…

Far be it from me to recommend anything from Autodesk but this is really quite impressive; send Autodesk a series of quasi-random photos surrounding an object and they ship back a polygon model of that object, for free. This explains it well. Normally we`d be shut out but the V17 retopolgy tool makes it potentially useful to an A:M user.

I just returned from the theater and enjoyed the film a lot. Well worth the price of admission. (no surprise there) This felt like (at least) three movies in one as the various stories of the characters played out on the screen. I'm glad Disney doesn't break them down into three movies but they certainly could be and... it may be that they are playing to the idea of serials even more with logical drop off points where one story ends and others continue on. The storytelling is very well done with lots of little surprises along the way. This is (to me) especially interesting given that there seemed to be a limited way forward and yet the writers managed to bui…

One of the decisions I need to make with my planning of Pappa Bear's career is whether or not to do these as toon renders or straight up 3d. One of the considerations is the setting. These shorts will be based in the Walt Disney World parks, initially Main Street in the Magic Kingdom. So I need to figure in creating the buildings as either models or simple projection maps. Also, while I really dig the old timey toon look, I'm not entirely sold that it is appropriate for this. I put together a quick test to see how Pappa Bear looks in both 3d and toon renders. I used a back drop painting that I had acquired at an auction that was used in an unknown Hanna-Barbara 1960…

People sometime ask why A:M isn't frequently mentioned in the magazines. Short answer... you have to buy advertisements in magazines to get treated as newsworthy. It's a very expensive way to generate not very many actual sales. Here's a documented example of the practice from the music industry press where the same thing is common... Aaron Blaise is branching out to offer some additional courses via his site. I'm posting this here... now... because the introductory pricing of $29 ends 14 hours from the time of this post. For those pinching pennies... that makes a big difference. I've purchased and have started watching the videos. I anticipate that much of what will be presented won't be new but will help to solidify what is already known. The underlying theme is.. Writers write. Directors direct. "Go out and do it!" That's the best way to learn. Here's the link:https://creatureartteacher.com/product/story-course-film-and-animation/ Here's the write up of the course. Here's …

I have gone to bones, unhidden the fingers, assigned points to the finger bones, but now in the choreography file, I cannot get the finger bones to show when I go to the skeletal mode. The last time I needed fingers, I did the same steps, and the fingers showed, but this time they don't. What have I left out this time? Generally, is there a way to get the skeletal mode to show more bones than it usually does with the 2001 Skeleton? This is probably one that everyone already knows, but I don't. Sorry!

Installed AM and I swapped to DirectX. Then I went to software render instead of hardware. Now when I launch I get ERROR at the top of the screen. I go to options and attempt to try to get hardware back but the graphics tab isn't even showing up. I can go to OpenGL but I get the mystery gray box when trying to select anything. I uninstalled and reinstalled but no good. I'm stumped. Any ideas how to fix this?

I know chor. animations take priority over actions but isn't there a way to BLEND the two?? Thanks in advance.

Reaquainting myself with AM. Currently using AM 64 bit v19 on Windows 10. Way back I used to use MOV a lot. Since 64bit does not support outputing to MOV I am using AVI YUV at a output setting of 1024 X 768 (or larger) for a quick prview test. When I use Quicktime the movie inspector feature of QT shows only a max of 728 X 476 resolution. This applies to VLC as well. Cannot find anywhere that AVI is limited to that resolution or that AM is limiting it. What s up with AVI? Help.

- and Yes - I worked on this from about 1977-1984ish? Not sure what year the video was taken. (after 1981 I would guess) In particular I worked on the real time software (project lead) that generated the simulated out-the-window imagery for the forward, aft, overhead windows of the shuttle as well as the simulated imagery as seen from the CCTV cameras located on the remote manipulator system (used to place payload objects from the cargo bay into space via remote manipulatur "arms"). In particular I worked on the fixed base and motion based simulators that were used for training the astronauts (landing, navigation and cargo bay missions). Yes. The imagery is pret…
