DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.

-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)

If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I am trying to mix some live action but when I load a new rotoscope it only appears as a white screen, I can click on render mode and see it but makes it hard to add my CG when I am unable to see and move an object at once. Anyone had this before?

I have been trying to combine some live action clip, when I place the clip in as a rotoscope I see a white box covering the screen. Clicking render mode will show the frame with the clip but I can not see it when I am trying to adjust the models. Now I am not able to see the clip at all. I have tried different video formats but it is not showing any improvement. Any help would be appreciated.

Yes, i am having trouble applying decals the decals go on fine, and the model looks relatively great (considering my skill level) but when i try to open the model file again, the decals do not seem to be properly applied, its like there out of place or something i think it has something to do with layering different decals ontop of each other or something my problem basically is, the decals just dont seem to want to stay the same

I'm having trouble applying my decal for a UV Map . I've flattened the group in an action window and i am now trying to APPLY my image as a DECAL (like the tut says) but the apply button is blanked out, and it says i can't drag it into the screen. Help would e greatly appreciated. Oh wait nevermind, I had entered the decail in the wrong object! Problem solved. Oh man nevermind to that too. How do I get into the UV Editor(Decal View) so that the image shows flattened patch? I mean I can apply the decal then stop positioning, but then how do I see it in the Decal View?

So I'm working on the lesson when I come to p.178. Pick the "smoke" emitter in the Project Workspace. Click on the Opacity Over Life property and set it to 0%. Well, I looked and looked and I can't find it to click it. I don't see it in the Workspace, or the properties window, and I have all of the trees opened. All I see is the properties (Bone position, transform, etc) Can someone help me? What am I doing wrong? Oops, I forgot to say which 'it' it was I can't find. I found the emitter no problem, it's the Opacity I can't find.

Started using AM after many years away now that I have more time to devote to animation projects again. I've got this cauldron steaming very nicely and I want to change the color of the steam to pink (love potion) over time. I keyframed the shortcut to the streak emitter's attribute's diffuse color to change over a few frames and I get a lovely gradient of this on the timeline (see pic). Alas, the actual attribute's color remains stubbornly gray. I've tried reloading the project in case things needed to be started from scratch but no joy. I feel I must be missing some simple switch or something. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Alan

Rodney, I have a very basic question- and figured this is the place to post it. I'm working through the exercises and am having trouble with posing Rabit. In essence, I want to rotate Rabbit's foot- but every time I click on it the whole leg moves. The video manual moves through this step very quickly. It appears that the pointer changes (from a standard arrow to two ying-yang arrows) when the foot rotates. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Brian

I am using vers. 15.0j+. I am able to render output files in MOV format with sound, but not in the AVI format. I seached the archives and this is similar to another person's problem from March 21, 2010. In that case, he just decided to keep using MOV. However, I would like to use AVI. Does anyone know where I can find some way of figuring out what the problem is?

Is this a bug or something I'm not doing right? I am trying to make the distortion toolbar visible. I went to Tools-Customize and picked the Toolbars tab. I clicked the check box for "Distort." The distort toolbar appeared. I clicked "OK" and the distort toolbar vanished. I tried it several times and even re-installed the software. No joy. Why won't it stay? Running version 13.0s on an Intel Macintosh.

Hello.. This isn't a complaint about anything, but rather a "how do you deal with this" sort of thing. I'm working through the AoAM book and am still on the "It's a Pitch" project. It's taking me some time thanks to rl issues and, most pertinently, because I'm finding myself having trouble working on it. Basically, I'm finding it very difficult to work with the armature. It seems that I can't get the right angle to move/rotate things and it's causing me alot of headaches. For example, I'm working in left-side view and everything looks fine.. until I look at it head on or from any other angle, then I realize that everything is out-of-whack looking. Then it's…

Ok, I'm not quite newbie... but I haven't really used this software (regularly) in over 10 years, so bear with me (no pun intended Ken - yes, I'mn on a Mac). I've got a very simple scene together in which I need to set up about 10 different camera moves, each that render a 20 second animation very quickly. The scene is made up of about 6 simple models: a ground plane, a long, flat, straight road, a car (the Porche from the CD), a simple scanner that the car passes through, a simple control booth, and a stop sign. All very simple. I've reduced the lighting in the scene to 1 klieg w/ Z-buffered shadows set very high in the scene acting as a sun. I've done this …

Can someone please tell me some good surface properties to create ice. I have been experimenting on my own, but I can't get it to look right. I was trying to adapt the ice settings in the current issue of 3D World magazine from Daz Studio to A:M, but I got confused because some of the D|S settings are named differently than the A:M settings. I decided it might be best to just ask people who specialize in A:M what settings they use. So I am asking... What settings do you use? Any help would be gratley appreciated. Thanks!

So I saw this program at the anime expo last week and I thought it was pretty cool so I decided to buy it. I came home, installed it, and proceeded to create a model.(that's where you're supposed to go right?) And in the 3 hours I spent trying to figure things out, all I could figure out is how to make an oval! In my frustration I was tempted to throw the disk out the window(though considering how much I paid for this thing it's good that I didn't...) people tell me to look at the manual but here's the thing: ALL I GOT WAS THE DISK! I thought it would be okay because the guy at the booth said there was a website (this one) with video tutorials....none of which give me a s…

This should be simple. I started my chor animations at frame 0 and now want to shift everything over to start at frame 100. In the PWS graph I switched to key mode and tried to select everything by dragging a box around all the keys, then hit the right arrow key to shift them. The problem is that there are about 6 channels that won't shift. They are user properties (poses) that turn IK hands on and off, a null's translation keys, and camera translation keys, among others. I've tried everything I can think of, including the "Move Keys" command, and those few channel's keys still will not move. Any suggestions? Using V15.0e on WinXP Thanks!

I'm trying to understand the effects of using different render settings and codecs and found this suggestion in an archived discussion. Can someone tell me what "load the animation in A:M's image folder" means. Is this something I do from within AM, or am I supposed to move the tga folder into one of AM's folders? The closest folder I see to an image folder is one called ImageIOS, but I doubt that's what I'm looking for. Thanks.

A few days back I was advised to obtain the setup machine for use with my simple models. I did this and have spent a few days trying to install the rig into the model. .. with not a lot of luck. I follow the tutorial through steadily and get all the way through to the point of installing the final rig. That process goes through but, when I try to use the result, there is an error listed in the PWS, "Error Loading String 5003" When I try to use the figure in an action the cp's in the mesh don't seem to be affected by the bones so that, for example, when I move the bones in the arm the mesh just stays in the standard T position. Hi - I am working on a new gorilla character and creating several hair systems - is it possible to turn the hair systems "off" - while the rest of the character is being modelled. I wanted to do all the work of moving and brushing the hair particles, but didn't want to have to remove the hair systems off parts of the model while creating the rest of it - or even during an animation - it will be way to slow to animate him, with the hair turned on - didn't know if I had to do everything else with the model and do the hair last. Thanks - Eric

OK, so this is probably a dumb question with an easy answer but; how do you turn on and of sprite emitters during an animation? All the tuts about them seem to assume that you want them on from the very beginning and with some pre-roll. What I need it to do is to start emitting some 10 or 20 seconds after the start of the sequence and last for 3 or 4 seconds, then stop emitting briefly, start again for another 3 or 4 seconds maybe and then be off for the rest of the animation. This is also a one take shot with no camera cuts. As always any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone direct me to a tutorial that shows much of the functionality within the same tutorial? I have gone through many of the online tutorials and have a lot of AM videos and books (that I bought off the forum). The problem is, they only take you through certain sections of things. No one really guides you from start o finish and all the steps in between. I am still struggling to get AM into a workable situation for me. It doesn't have to be complicated...say maybe a football. A couple of prelim questions for a project I'm going to be fooling around with involving a tv showing images. I understand how to apply a video/image sequence as a decal, so that's not my question. I'm looking for a very refractive screen, more refractive than realistic, so the "projection" distorts as the screen rotates. Do I want to: --make a screen with transparent/refractive materials and place it in front of a flat patch with the video decal? --make a screen and apply the decal to the "back" of the screen? Also, how is refraction calculated? Would I want just a one-sided (2-dimensional), one-patch screen (well, it'd be a couple of patches to accommod…

I created two relational poses (percentages) within one pose window to two different bones within the model. Both showed up under user properties. But when I apply them individually within a keyframe they seem to interfere with each other. When I set the right one to 100 the left one goes to some positive value (it is supposed to be zero) Think of toes on a foot. I want to squeeze them at some point in a walk. But when I set the right foot toes to 100, the left pose slider has moved also. Should I have created each percentage pose separately in a different pose window?

Two question really. I'm working in V11 temporarily and I imported some images ( jpegs ) to use as rotos. Greetings all! While I have puttered around with A:M since 2000 I haven't really done anything other than some interesting stills but my real interest is animation. So here are my questions: 1. Is the A:M 'school' where you upload your progress through the tutorials and have them graded still in effect or am I too late? 2. The TWO project was begun in 2005 as a three year project so I assume it must be in its final stages. Considering the fact that I still must go through the A:M tutorials and that I hold down a full time job is it too late for me to hope to contribute to this project? Finally, a side note: I noted somewhere that there was still some t…

Ok, never mind the title. I figured it out. Hello, my name is Christopher Harris and I'm an aspiring animator. I'm really wanting to help on the TWO project before its to late, so if anyone could review some of my animation skill, that'd be great. First, to let you know a litte bit about my skill level: I cannot model worth a flip, so I can't help with that. I can animator fairly well but I'm improving quite a bit. I can write screenplays (I've been produced in two other countrys) I can storyboard. And that's about it. I'd really like to animate for the TWO project. So if the animation directors are out there, PLEASE CONSIDER ME. I'…
