A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

OK whenever i am modeling sometimes i use the lathe key. but then maybe i wont like what is lathed so i select it and delete it. but when i try to make more splines they wont show up. its pretty much like deleting a lathed item makes any other splins that i try to create invisible.

I've had Brian Fisher working as an intern for the summer at HDStudios, where I do graphics. Brian has been playing with Hash now for only 3 weeks and has just posted an animation on YouTube that I think is quite good for an early 'go' with any 3D software! He used the Porsche model from my V14 CD, and modeled the roads and environment himself. Hopefully this will be found inspiring to other Newbies or folks considering A:M purchase.

Hi folks, I post this here, because it`s probably a beginnersquestion: I want to wrap a poster around a postercolumn: I scale down my decal a bit until it fits in the height, when I apply with set to "cylindrical" I see it triple and when I render it, I see it only distorted. Then when I look under image "repeat" I see 3 in the x-axis but when I alter this to 1 the image is still distorted when rendering. What am I possibly doing wrong? Any help anybody Please? Hi! I am a long time user of A:M but sometimes even we have newbee-questions So: How do you set the pivot of a model to a new position? When I model a character and rig it and than I want to reset the pivot of the model (in the model-window) to a new position so that for example the feet of my character are at the 0 / 0 / 0 point. I could translate the geometry and after that the bones with a translate-comment on the highest hierachy-level, but I wounder if there is a way to just set the model-pivot with a number-input like "Set new pivot to 50 cm lower."? Thanks for your time and your answers *Fuchur*

Ok, this thing is acting strange. AM is crashing, I mean a lot. When I reopen it doesn't remember what I had open last, or any of the library, properties, etc. I'm using AM 2006. V13 ot. Should I re-install? Also, where are the updates for V13? Thanks

Once I've created the "poses" involved, the biggest factor becomes timing. Of course, sometimes I didn't make keyframes where they belong. This results in a lot of selecting all the body-part keyframes down a particular frame, and then moving them. But my monitor isn't big enough to make "selecting all the different body parts' keyframes" into a graceful motion. There's a lot of scrolling involved to even reveal all the keyframes at a given frame! Is there an easier way to distort an object or project's timing?

Is there a way to constrain a crowd in the flocking engine so that it does not intersect with other models (it's fine, and perhaps even somewhat of a benefit ift hey intersect with each other a bit)? I'm trying to add a shitload of trees to my choreography and I figured I could put them in one at a time but it would be great if I could just do a crowd or a couple crowds and have all my trees added. This of course leads to another question. If one can add them without them popping into existing models in the choreography is there a way to randomize the scale on all three axis a bit? So I get different sized and shaped trees? And lastly is there a way to ran…

Long time user(since Playmation) just returned to A.M., upgraded, yada, yada. I cant seem to find my beloved Isometric rendering function... Has this option for rendering been removed? If it has, what was the last version it was in? If its still in there, where is it hiding? Sorry to ask such a nobbish question but the option isnt where I remember it being. Ty in advance for any help/hints, I have a client who wants flat shaded Iso type graphics and AM was my first choice.

Hi, I hope I can explain this properly. I have a cat that I have modeled using a famous painting as a roto for the face and proportions. In the painting the cat is SITTING, but I have modelled it standing so that I could set up and rig it using the free Anzovin Setup Machine. This all works fine and it walks and moves quite well, but now I need to make the cat sit in the original position as in the painting, but I am finding that I can't achieve the exact position to match the roto using the model rigged like this as it doesn't give me the required degree of accuracy - I hope you are with me up to now. The question is should I animate CP's to achieve the exact…

I was looking into getting another computer and I was debating whether or not it should be a Mac or a PC. I created all of my A:M models (.mdl) using a Windows XP computer. If I wanted to buy a Mac, and transfer my .mdl files to it, would they still be compatible? Would they be able to open on the Mac? Thanx, -Hisako

Hello, An observation on subdivision. It seems that subdivision by 1/2, is not very compatible with the topology of AM. There are better results by 1/3. For the follow examples, I use the SplitPatch plugin that use subdivision by 1/2.(thank you Yoda for all yours plugins!) The subdivision by 1/3 has been done by hand. Some hooks can cause problems. (because it is not possible to stick more than three hooks per segments) So prefer to use the third solution.

I have been using v11.1 for over a year, and just recently downloaded the upgrade for 12.0 It installs fine, but once it is installed, there are no plugins. WHat I mean by that is that any tree that has a plugin, when plugins is highlighted nothing comes up. Also, help topis brings up an error box saying "failed to launch help". Just to see if it was aproblem with v12.0 I downloaded the upgrade to my laptop and it brings up all plugin fine. Have I done something wrong or is there a setting I have failed to turn on. PLease tell me someone has had this problem and has a solution????? Thanks

Quick question: I just purchased the 2007 upgrade and downloaded the update (v. 13.0r). When I load up my program, it shows the OZ screen, but when I view the "about A:M" to verify that the correct update has been applied, it says "A:M 2006 13.0r". Is this correct or should it say "A:M 2007" ? Thanks.

A couple of prelim questions for a project I'm going to be fooling around with involving a tv showing images. I understand how to apply a video/image sequence as a decal, so that's not my question. I'm looking for a very refractive screen, more refractive than realistic, so the "projection" distorts as the screen rotates. Do I want to: --make a screen with transparent/refractive materials and place it in front of a flat patch with the video decal? --make a screen and apply the decal to the "back" of the screen? Also, how is refraction calculated? Would I want just a one-sided (2-dimensional), one-patch screen (well, it'd be a couple of patches to accommod…

I am refreshing my memory with the online Ref Manuel for Hair/Fur http://www.hash.com/Technical_Reference/v110/Hair.htm They refer to "Stiffness" below - I am just not seeing that setting in the Hair System or Hair Emitters properties "Stiffness: Controls how stiff or ridged each hair strand is. The stiffer the value the less affect dynamics and forces such as gravity has on the hair. This value is a percentage to adjust all the child Hair Emitter's Stiffness values." Has it been changed or located somewhere else in v14? -E

I hope people don't mind me asking as many questions I can think of- this board's response time is too good to pass up

I'm starting a job soon, teaching teens to make movies. Since I've been dabbling with A:M, I was thinking of showing them some of the basics, get them excited about special effects. However, I'm registered on my home computer. If I go to one of my work computers, can I log in my account and use A:M? It's fine if it deactivates my home copy until I re-log-in there, I'm really not trying to pirate it. I'm trying to see if I can bring it to a class, that could very possibly get some kids to save up for their own copies. Of course, if the answer is a simple no, I understand. Whatever it takes to keep this awesome team employed I could talk to my bosses about …

How do I do a walk cycle with an action, then when the character gets to the end of the path do I then animate him without messing up the action? I was reading Dec 3d World, and there's an article in there about making the Caltex advert, that had a car made out of flies. So, seeing as I'm studying particles, I thought I'd have a go: [attachmentid=22919] It raised a number of questions - like did I do it the easiest way? I emitted fly sprites from the undecalled transparent Porsche, and applied a lot of force to make it go backwards, and then reversed the rendered TGAs. So you can't send particles along a path? I wanted the swarm to form a ball and then swarm along a path to form the car, but I could not get them to join up with the backwards rendered TGAs convincingly. If you send out partic…

Hi, I guess I'm more confused than I thought. Is there any place to really learn how to work with actions in a choreography? I'm trying to do some simple stuff, I think. Like get a character to walk about 1/2 way across the screen, maybe wave and turn toward the back. Then have the character walk further across the screen. I got the whole keyframe thing down now and the first part works OK. But when I want to continue the walk I try adding a new path and constraining the character to the new path and then try to add the walk from the actions again. except the walk doesn't add with any duration. Do I need to start another action in the chor? Is there any plac…

I am creating grass using hair material and cannot find that post, I need it to brush up on how to do it... do you mind seeing if you can find your post and send me the link? ;-) Thanks - Eric
