A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

Hello, im very new to animation master, but unfortunately not new to 3D modelling, and I now what lacks on animation master :/ I have finished most parts of my 3d Tyrannosaurus rex BUT, I can't find any option that can remove triangles or a smooth shading option*. So my first question would be: Is there any model correcting button? Or any smooth shading button? and.....my second is: How can you mount an UV map to a model instead of drag and droping decals? Thanks a lot 8imon * smooth shading is shading the model from flat triangles shading to smoother.

Ok to check out the program I bought a subscription. First thing I tried to do was add some actions I got off eggdrops and add them to my library but program does not seem to recognize them. did I do something wrong or is subscription limited to only 3 actions? I put them in the correct folder. also if I create my own actions can I save that to actions? please be kind as this is my first opening of the program and my first questions. forgive me if I seem stupid at the moment. I will get better.

How easy it to learn on? What I wish to learn in using this product is the basics (if not most) 3D animation. I have a good sense for animation, I used to do 2D using programs like EZtoon, Pivot, and Flash 8. Do you think I will be able to pick up on the normal motions of this program in about a month? Usually, I don't keep my expectations high, so I don't get frustrated, and this is no exception, but the look of the program is promising. EDIT: Could anyone point me in the way of a guide? Or is the Extras DVD sufficient?

Hello I'm newbie in A:M. I'm learning the soft using the tutorials. In Take a Wlalk, my rabbit stops wlalking on the path at about 20% of the line. I see something like separate vectors in the path line. The path is a straight line builded with only two points. Where am I wrong? Rémy

Alright, Thank you so much for the quick replies on my last post. I appreciate it. So I get the program up and running with no problems. But for some reason when the program starts up I am not seeing the camera view. I drag a character out of the library on to the stage - a load bar at the bottom goes to 100% but I see nothing for some reason. No grid, no camera, no character. I must be doing something retarded. Any advice? Thanks in advance, Eric

I know I should know how to do this, but I don't. I've been messing around with it for forever and finally decided that I need help. It's probably something simple that I'm not doing, but I can't figure out what it is... Okay, so I'm playing around with the Knight and reusable actions in the Dark Room (in the projects folder). I have him be idle and then yawn. (No problem) Where I run into a problem is when I try to have him walk on a path after that. When I create the path and constrain him to it and the type of walk I want, then it automatically constrains him to the path when he is idle and yawns. So I end up with a knight yawning as he slides along a…

Hi folks, Could somebody please clarify some "simple" question about texturing for me? -Decaling renders faster then the procedural materials right? So if I would paint ,for instance Tom, in color red in 3D-Painter he would render faster as if I would set his surface property-color from yellow to red, correct? So would I gain some substantial time saving effect in rendertimes in big chors/scenes this way? Would I have this effect as well, if I would use the toonshader? -then ,If I would like to have Tom shiny (reflective) in the painted/decaled version, I would have to make reflection maps for Tom, right? or could I combine the decals with su…

Probably a simple property that got altered, but as I'm trying to do Exercise 6 and position shaggy, some of his bones have turned blue in colour and I can no longer control them properly. I can't grab the base of his hand bone and drag the whole arm around...I can't move it at all except for rotating it, or if I use the arrow keys on my keyboard it actually will deform the model itself. The bones that have remained while when un-selected operate as I would expect, just not the ones that are blue when un-selected. I've attached a screen shot of what happened when out of frustration I had the bone selected and used the arrow keys. ...what silly thing did I do? Th…

I'm extremely knew at all of this, but I was wondering how you import model files into A:M. I have some Twilight Princess models I downloaded that included the model and texture files and I would really appreciate it if someone could explain step-by-step how to import the model and get the textures on it. I've tried, and it says it can't import the model. I believe the file is compatible with A:M, they're .3Ds files and the textures are .tga files. Thanks in advance!

Greetings all, Well I have a new situation and not sure how to fix it (if it can be) without having to start all over again. I had modeled 1/2 of my ladies dress and then was going to COPY/FLIP/ATTACH but (not paying attention of course) I hit SNAP TO MIRRORED POINTS which at some point later looked right. So now my main seem down the middle won't move, when I HIDE her to just see the dress you see what i get. Close the model and reopen I get this Repair message and haven't got a clue. Any ideas folks????

Sometimes when a spline is directly over a grid line it disappears. I am using the version 16 beta and I am wondering if this is normal behavior, nor not. These really are square objects - a four-sided box.

I'm following the modeling tutorials in the new David Rogers book, and I'm trying to extrude a cube. Easy, right? Well, when I'm in the front view and I try and extrude the four cps, instead of extruding them outwards, it just makes another square right beneath. When I change to the perspective view the square gets extruded, but it's all cockeyed. Any help or pointers out there? Thanks Sruli

I have this wolf model, but I need some help with it. I have some stubborn folds that won't go away. I'm also getting this weird line in the middle of my wolf's head when it's in toon render. Also if anyone has a tip on my wolf be sure to tell me. For instance if the legs are to long tell me, because I'm going for a cartoon wolf, but I want to stay proportional and a little realistic. fullbody.mov bodytest3.mov wolf.mdl

OK i recently posted a post with a test of a helicopters main roter , now i have been testing some spin speeds and have gotten mixed results , apparently the blades need to spin The right way or every one dies. my questions is that in order to get some of the good spin speeds i have to rotate 4000+ degrees a second and that number is getting pretty big like 12000+ 8-9 minutes into the animation, i heard a while back there was a way to make a item rotate X amount of time by using some pose option but the only ones i could find where on of or 0-100% . any one know how to do this?

Hi all, I'm doing a project that involves rotoscoped video with animated characters. I've found that AM will not accept DV AVI's and when I use cinepak or indeo to compress the video, upon rendering in AM the digital video turns out terrible - get lines all across the screen. Any suggestions on how I should bring the digital video into AM and then render? Thanks, Mike

Hi I am trying to apply a decal to my model, but every time I bring it in, it appears it appears very pixellated (large pixels). The original photoshop psd file is 7670kb and is very clear and sharp. I have tried saving it as as jpg, bmp and tga files of different sizes and reducing/enlarging them, and varyious resolutions but it always seems to come in to AM the same. I have searched the AM forums for an answer to no avail. I'm sure someone out there knows what I am doing wrong or will know the resolution! Thanks in anticipation Hoggy

While working on my model (which is inside a project) I constanly used 'Save Project As', thinking I always have previous versions of my model if I dont like the current edition. Only now I realised that all project versions have the same version of my model. Is this how it should be? Maybe there is an option to have all models inside a prj file or smth?

i'm not sure if this is 100% true, but i found that using an actual photo for a facemask on a character is better than painting one in photoshop or whatever. upon doing some research and looking at some high resolution 3d characters, it appears that they use high res photographs for texturing. i've tried going to stock photo websites to find images, but the results are not so good. does any body know where i can find or purchase high res images for 3d characters? -hisako

I originally bought AM V10.5. My last update is version 11.1b. Is there any later update that I would be permitted to get for free? I have had AM for many years but never gotten off the ground with it. My original computer had display problems and was too slow, there were crashes, and I found the program difficult to catch onto (I'm a right-click addict and expect everything to be discoverable by right-clicking on objects). Now I'm running Win XP on several computers (HP a1600n, Toshiba laptop, custom dual XEON) so should have the power if my version is XP compatible with my AM. I'd like know if: 1) Is V11.1b compatible with XP? 2) Can I get…

I made a group for "top eyelids" but realized I wanted to move them independently at times. So I selected "top eyelids," hit "G" for group mode, held alt and deselected one eye's cpts. But NOW my "top eyelids" group doesn't select the cpts I deselected at that moment. Is there a way to narrow your cpt selection from a group without altering that group?

Quick question... Is it possible to delete a control point from a spline so that the curve of the spline is maintained? Something like when you shift click to add a CP to a spline and the CPs before and after the new CP automatically adjust their bias to maintain the curve. For instance, I have the following spline... But when I delete a CP, it distorts the spline, which is what I don't want to happen. Thanks... Al

I am very new to this and it would be very helpful if someone has a tutorial that follows the same process as the Demo Video on the main Hash page. I've tried to follow the steps he uses to animate that vase several times, but it's obvious some steps are gone over so fast you don't notice them, and you can't stop and start it anyway. I want to make my own model and animate it, and things aren't going well as yet. For instance, how do you save a model to begin with? I can save my project, but don't seem to be able to save models. Hi I have a project file with several models in it. Something went wrong with one of the models in it and now every time I try to open the file I get a "error #004. loading" message followed by "exception #001" message and then A:M shuts down. I have no backup of the file (hopefully this is the last time I will make that mistake) from before the preblem started. I am not happy at the prospect of losing everything in this project file as it is for an animated children's story that is already running behind (yikes!!). I hope I don't have to start again!! Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Thanks for everyone who has responded to my questions. I really do try to read the fourms and figure it out myself before I ask - I just don't always get very far. 1. Can you lock an object so that you don't accidentally move it? Seems like my students are always moving the stage by mistake. 2. When in the camera view, I want to move an object up and down ( I guess that's the Y axis) and not back and forth. Can you constrain movement to a certain axis? I know I can go to the side view and move it up and down from there, I was just wondering if I can do it from the camera view. 3. Any advice on further understanding the nulls? Hello.. This isn't a complaint about anything, but rather a "how do you deal with this" sort of thing. I'm working through the AoAM book and am still on the "It's a Pitch" project. It's taking me some time thanks to rl issues and, most pertinently, because I'm finding myself having trouble working on it. Basically, I'm finding it very difficult to work with the armature. It seems that I can't get the right angle to move/rotate things and it's causing me alot of headaches. For example, I'm working in left-side view and everything looks fine.. until I look at it head on or from any other angle, then I realize that everything is out-of-whack looking. Then it's…

Ok, I did the tutorial on Yves' web site (very helpful by the way) for wood grain. http://www.ypoart.com/ I've been trying to make railroad ties. ( Rodger Reynolds has been a great help by the way). Anyway, I made the material and it looks fine, how ever in the final render the grain seems to go away. I notice if I angle the model or camera this happens. Is this a normal look for a material? I thought you would be able to make out the grain no matter what angle it's at. Any advice would be great. Andy
