[Edit: This side discussion has been split off from topic AMC Gremlin] Investigating further... Here is a comparison of displacement effects: First with a Gradient Material set to transition from RGB 128 to RGB 129 and Displacement set to 100000% Second is that gradient rendered to a TGA and used as a Displacement map Third is that gradient rendered to an OpenEXR and used as a Displacement map The Material is able to calculate an exact value for every pixel between the 128 and the 129 levels, creating a perfectly smooth slope. The TGA map, as expected, has one stair step from 128 to 129 The EXR has 8 steps. EXR uses a…

Using an environment map in v 17 and it looks like a color decal instead of reflections. I can't tell if I'm missing a step but I recall it was pretty straightforward. Is there an additional *something* I need to do to get the reflective quality?

Is there a way of measuring objects in AM besides the rulers? Transform and info and manipulator properties only show percentages. Can't remember if there was a plug-in for that or not.

I finally decided to take the plunge. After skipping Lion all together, I figured I'd better catch up with the OS before I get completely left behind. I went out and bought a new HD and spent all of yesterday backing up my old HD in case this doesn't go well. After a lengthy download, I've installed Mountain Lion and went straight away to see if it had any adverse affects on A:M. By coincidence, this is the day that my subscription expired, but I'd known it was coming and had bought my upgrade last week. After pulling out the files so that I could get A:M to prompt me to activate it, I entered the activation code and started up v16b. Everything seemed fine …

If you ever wondered why "likes" disappeared from the forum... it was my fault. I figured they reduced actual commenting and thought that getting rid of the "like" button might encourage more responses to posts. I still figure that is true but since removing the option to "like" things didn't increase the commenting, we might as well have them back. Thanks to Rodney for trying my experiment and for undoing it as well! I wonder if anyone will like this post...

everytime i close and reopen a:m the "draw particles / hair" option is set to on, regardless if i´ve set it to off the session before. in my current project i always forget that when i´m opening the project, and when i want to scrub through the timeline, a:m starts calculating the particles (i´ve a sprite system set up), which can take up to 10 minutes or so, depending on the number of frames it has to calculate. the active-status the model which emits the particles is set to off, so i wonder why a:m is calculating the particles anyway... any advice?

I'm trying to simulate the diffuse light from the illuminated sign on the top of my Checker cab with an array of small kliegs. I've worked out a chart of all the aiming angles I need. As I import each light instance as an action object they come in with Rotate X, Y & Z = 0 then I type in my desired angles and the lights snap to those values. But if I change my mind and type in one new value, like Rotate Y, all three rotate values automatically reset to new values. They're obviously not random because the orientation of the light doesn't move so it's like there's a function running in the background that automatically re-calculates the datum for each axis. It's a minor…

Recently started a new Sports Day project which is using a .tga image as a decal for the pitch markings, which according to my OS, is 2,554 x 410 pixels @72dpi and a file size of 95kb. If I look at the information for the same image as it appears in the Images folder in A:M it agrees on the dimensions but says it is 3.99MB!? That's but a big leap from 95kb! And it also seems to be enough to keep making A:M freeze and have to be forced quit if I try and pan over it with the camera. Turning OFF Show Decals and the camera moves freely and no freeze. On the plus side this decal, so far & touch wood, has always displayed correctly and not fallen foul of the usual …

A few textures from Filter Forge, a texture generation program, rendered out and cylinder mapped to a simple A:M shape. PRJ and bitmaps: FF tests005.zip They have a free 30 day trial you can get. It's a serious power user program but their library has thousands already made for you to download and use as is. If you like it, they have run "50% OFF SALE- LAST DAY" two out of the last five days, so I suspect they will do that again some time. Full screen to see detail. Luna, Wasteland, Crystal, Tiles... I wonder if it is possible in some way to add a slight (or not so slight) automatic random jitter to an object? This could be to a camera (to make it look handheld), to a character (ie to make it look like it is freezing), or to a light (to make it look like a faulty flickering lightbulb)?

I was trying to remember this awhile back, but I just had it happen to me and wanted to put it out here for other people. If you find your choreography suddenly takes forever to render (if in fact, it will ever render) and it starts adding up to tens of hours or days or something, one thing that can cause this is having an environment map missing from the choreography's Image Based Lighting. I used to use them all of the time and would run into this. Anyway, just wanted to put it down before my feeble brain forgets it again. :-)

Hi everybody as in each year there is a new advent calendar for 2020 again which has been created with the help of Animation:Master again. Not everybody might know what a advent calendar is: The calendar runs from the 1st of December to the 24th and each day there is a small little door which can be opened to receive a little gift. Most of them are chocolate in general, but there are many more from toys (not only for children sometimes) to anythin else. As I am working in an advertising agency in this calendar we show you a new funny, thoughtful or just well done commercial each day. (no, those are not all from us or something... those are just great…

I am not sure if people are aware of this, but I just did a small test and it works... You can even use one decal (UV set) to layer color maps with transparency over each other. Not sure if it helps a lot (maybe with 3d painting it could be nice for instance to animate wounds or skin changes or something like that?) but it was an interesting thing for me... I've added a rotoscope image onto a view and adjusted it how I thought I wanted it (along with 4 other views). After adjusting for sizing and aligning with the axes like I wanted, I went through and selected the "No Pick" for each in their Properties. However, I found later that one image is aligned on the wrong axis. How can I get access to the rotoscope image on that view that is misaligned since I've turned off picking it, I can't click on it. I'm running AM 2006. Thanks for the help. Tom

I don't know about other folks but I've been using the heck out of the new Snap to Control Point feature. I was using it before to match up splines and CPs but today I used it in a Pose to assist with precision placement at 0%, 50% and 100%. My project here was to create a modular monster whose belly can match to 'small', 'medium' and 'large' sizes as well as (manually through the pose slider) other settings. If you'll pardon the cheap graphics from this POC... I'd say it worked rather well. I meant to render a wireframe to show the three target zones for the modular monster's waists. Edit: Mov replaced with shaded wireframe render. (the three ovals being…

Doh! I just had one of those painful reminders that we should save often and save with incremented filenames/numbers. I had spend entirely too much time modeling a character when I thought to save the model. All is well. Then I began to adjust the color of groups in the model. Everything working fine. I'm really starting to like the progess of the model. Then I accidentally enlarged a group and it took over another section of the mesh, giving it the wrong color. A quick undo didn't work as anticipated and then I deleted the entire mesh except for the eyes.... Gah! No problem... I can fix that. Then... My fat fingers and dull mind accidentally Con…

hi, i couldnt find the SDK category anymore, so i post it here. can somebody from hash give me a file description of the baked particle files (*.par, *.pai)? i assume that *.par is storing the particle positions per frame and *.pai the particle index number, right? but this files are binary and i want to know how they are written. and is there the possibility to acess particle data via the sdk? my goal is to import other particle simulations from other applications (like realflow, xsi ICE, etc.) another thing is, that the user can not define where those baked particle files are stored. they alway be stored in the application install location in the libra…

I recall when radiosity renders took hours. Now it's a few minutes. I dropped some old models from the AM CD into my tiny house room lit with radiosity. All the lighting is just that one bulb light near the ceiling. Mach 5 Racer: BioBot: MotorCycle: Janitor of War: Space Marine. Something about the surface specularity on this model and the previous one is causing the conspicuous bright spots in the room ( I think).

A "Drivers" folder seems to show up under a model in the Objects folder when you change a parameter to something that was external to the model. For example, if you drop a green shiny material on model of a vase, your vase will become green and shiny. If you edit the color of that material in the shortcut that is in the model rather than in the original material in the Materials folder, a Drivers folder will be added to the model that seems to contain that custom change. Or does it? If I delete that Drivers folder, the custom change I made doesn't go away. For further confusion, these drivers sometimes acquire keyframe curves with values changing over time…

For whatever reason, the program had the cobblestone pattern going one way to the left of the canal that the Bridge of Sighs spans and another way on the right side. I could not rotate the pattern to the right until I split it off from the one on the left and rotated it. I gave both the same properties, but for whatever reason the texture on the left ends up much darker than the pattern on the right. I am using Version 18 of A:M. I am also interested in knowing if there is a control for darkness of a texture and where that control is. Here is the example I am describing:

I have a model of double swinging doors with bones and poses that I want to import multiple times into a new model. After the import, I can select all the CP's and translate and rotate them into my desired positions but the bones stay anchored at their imported positions. Is there a way to move the entire model, bones and all, within a model? I'm fairly certain the answer is "No" but I thought I'd ask before doing the grunt work or installing them in the chor.

I have no experience of rigging so, when I adapted a model from a DVD some time ago, went with the rig installed I've insterted an extra bone since then ( for the lower torso, but thats not giving problems). Have lined up the feet and the legs in the model window but, when animated in an action window a twist or distortion appears in the ankles areas. I hope I'm asking this in the right place ? It might sound odd but, is there a way to change the way joints are listed in the action and choreo files. Not the names but the way the hierarchy is listed at the side ? At first I thought it was the order on which the bones were selected at first but. I tried to select them in the order I would use them later and it still seems to come out the same. descending it reads Back Back 2 Head Hips Then the first finger joint then the bicep What I 'd like to do is to get the hierarchy in order so it descended as Bicep Forearm Hand Thumb 1 Thumb2 Thumb3 First finger Furst Finger 2 First…

How many times has this happened to you? You line up the perfect Birds Eye View to move that spline or rotate that bone and then you realize you need to go to a different Birds Eye View to hide some mesh first... and then you'll need to refind your current view! D'oh! Or maybe you sneeze while you're Turning the view and everything spins away to who-knows-where! Gah! If only you could get your view back! When you are in a standard Orthogonal view the Numberpad 7 key will take you back to the last-used Birds Eye View... but that doesn't work when you're already in a Birds Eye View! You need the amazing Birds Eye View Queue! …

I recently started doing lots of large (for me anyway) rendering jobs on my Dell Windows computer I purchased the end of last year, which has an Intel i9 processor. The i9 processor has 8 cores (most desktop i7s have 4). Each core can run two threads of normal programs, but each has only one math processor. As a result, you can run 8 NetRender Messengers (slaves) at a time, as rendering is all math. I'm getting 45 seconds of animation (1,350 frames) at 720p rendered in a little over two hours! The last time I was rendering large numbers of frames (on a dual-core machine a few years back), it would take around 18 hours to do a similarly sized batch. I've found t…

I know this is a perenial question, my apologies for that. I am trying to redo the model of the young boy for the dance project and decided to use retopology as a way of improving my modeling abilities ( not very advanced ), using the previous model as a base to work from. It worked OK for the body but, have encountered some difficulties with the face. I was trying to use the Cooper tutorial in TOAM as a guide and got this, when rendered it comesout with very noticeable creases Fine if it was me but not so good for a 11 year old. I am hoping to smooth out the other bumps with cp repositioning but can't seem to remove the creases. Can someone kindl…

Hi there, after having another look on the description of the Flatten command, I thought to myself, that this could solve much of my UV problems. Then I tried again, and like the 150 times before, it did not give me the results I expected. With lots of shifting, tilting, rotating I was finaly able to get a decent result with a open cylinder, but it was so far away from beeing a workflow one wants to utilise :-( Has soeone a decent tutorial on this, maybe even a video tutorial? Then, the manual says that flatten uses a invisible cylinder pointing along the Z axis in order to flatten the model. Maybe if that invisible cylinder would be made visible, the process woul…
