Hi guys well it seems i cannot get pass this I've tried pigs and jpg and all get is some strange image unless i do a quick render and deals are no better I'm using 10.10.2 but Ive tried this on earlier versions and have similar problems I also tried version 17 here is what i have any help would be grateful j

Hello All, This is probably easy for most, but I haven't done this on the Mac version for a while. It's always consistent on the PC version How do I import a DXF, 3DS, or OBJ in the modeling window in v19? I need to make MDL files. I've already decimated them with MeshMixer to make them less dense. On the PC it's always the same way - r-click in the modeling window, choose plugins -> import -> and the model type ...easy as pie On the Mac version there is no plugin choice in the r-click menu of a model or the choreography. When I load a project that then looks for files, such as jpgs etc that aren't in the location the project expects, AM opens up a file window to locate it BUT the file window will not allow me to drill to a lower level - only to a higher level. AND, having navigated to a higher level will not let me navigate to the original lower level. iMac - OSX 10.9.1. Most likely a Mac issue - can someone confirm before I lodge a AM Report. Cheers

Hello- I know that the particles listed as "Blobbies, Hair, Sprites,and Fluids" all have a "Cast Shadows" selection in their properties menu. I believe "Streaks" are able to cast shadows IF certain things are done. I believe it must be a Klieg light with ray traced shadows. There are also other steps one can take but the correct order escapes me at the moment. Does anyone know how to make Streaks "Cast Shadows"? Thanks! Tom

Sometimes Markers don't show in the Chor I've found that it has something to do with a particular object being selected or not selected. Markers showing while "Shortcut to Lot" is selected... Markers not showing while "Shortcut to Lot" is not selected... I've reported the bug. For now, I was able to make the markers appear without "Shortcut to Lot" being selected by deleting its keyframes and remaking them. Fortunately it didn't have many.

I seem to recall a simplemethod for doing this... Perhaps someone can set me on the right path. I have a material that is saved as two different materials. The main difference between the two is that one is set with displacement and the other is for color. Both materials can then be applied to a group to better control the texture. That's not part of the problem... just a little background/setup. I dropped the color material onto a different group in the model and tweaked the settings. I like the changes so want to keep that new material. The issue is how to save/export that material as a new material. If I stepped away from the computer for awhile the a…

I'm building a formed steel frame, a part of which is shown below, to fit inside an archway . I wanted the vertical column to intersect nicely with the curved section, so I built the curved beam first and made a copy of it as a background template. After completing the orthogonal Tee section with all the corners and five pointers, the final step was splicing the Tee section into the curve and massaging it's cp's, mags and bias values so it's shape matches that of the original curve. Having some trouble with the Happy Families project and don't know if its caused by the Hardware, a mac mini running OSX 10.85 with 4Gb of RAM or, have I corrupted the file somehow ? It started with the last scene ( the one with the hard edged lights ) which was taking up to three hours to render some frames, 20 minutes the next, with variations inbetween. Started on the final scene and have manged to get the first pass at the animation done so, while waiting to review that, thought to setup the lighting properly. I have a suggestion for the older stronger modelers and animator here(hear me out now), I know we have the TAO and I love that for learning but I have another idea that could be beneficial for beginners and good for Animation master as a whole. We could have something where a Mentor would draw a picture(human for now of humanoid) and the student would make it get critique and so on. Then with said model another mentor or the same would have that student rigged rinse and repeat then they could go on to animating the same model. The mentor would for each block would make a tutorial for each task that would be done in this dare I say camp. I am sure this has been before but …

Re: our discussion today of buffers in OpenEXR... Here is a tut that shows how to make the detail of an OpenEXR depth buffer visible to the naked eye... A subsequent test of OpenEXR render in v19 and v17 indicates something is wrong in v19. For now, do your OpenEXR Rendering in v17 if you need buffers.

Working on the Bear model and trying to set up the cp weights. Two things occur to me. One, is it possible to do all the weighting for one side then mirror it to the other side, as it is with the "Mirror Smartskin" option ? Two Is it a Mac quirk or, when selecting the bone in the weighting window, for example Right Bicep geometry, the bone named in the box below could be the Left Knee Fan bone. It is then necessary to scroll through all the bones to find the one you want ( and there are a LOT in the 2008 rig ). It does get a bit wearing after awhile. regards simon

John, thanks for the idea of using mirrors--saved my ass!! Currently I have a cube of mirrors surrounding my 'energy spheres'--I thought that the cube would need to be constrained with the camera but that looked weird. It looks good now but I was wondering if a sphere shape would work better but that would distort the energy spheres huh. Anyway great tip!!

This is the first time I've ever seen this (v19.0o). Attached is a model of what will ultimately be the hinge on the back door of a 1950's vintage truck trailer. The attached image shows that it has one strange patch that doesn't respond well to "refind normals" which has the effect of pointing its normal opposite to all its neighbours and messing up the smoothness of the surface. The only way to correct it is to select just the patch and flip it's normal. It's not much of a bug but can Steffen fix it? Fruehauf_hinge.mdl

This model was sculpted and retopoed in 3DCoat and then exported as an .obj. Then imported into A:M. In the last step several faces across the object disappeared. First I thought "flipped normals", but this does not seem to be the case. I have looked at the object in both Blender and Messiah Studio, and here everything seems okay. Anybody have an idea on whats going on? And off course how to repair, without destroying the underlying UVs of the object?

Working in V17g with OSX 10.68 Got back to trying to finsh Ska Lake, spent the last two days correcting for the new model,it seemed to work ok and intended to go back today to start adjusting te detail poses and timing. Using the 2008 rig. `For some reason (?) the keys don't appear to set in the PWS when the bones are moved. It was working as normal yesterday but curious things today. Having a spot of bother with patches going missing. I have prepared a street model for the new project using V15 Copied the model file and the chor over onto another machine using V17J to build up a town using the duplicator wizard When I open up the file in V17 alot of the patches go missing Previously I have modeled in V15 and imported into V17 without trouble. AM automatically assigns a model bone when you make a model. Is there a way to scale it in proportion to the model itself rather than accept the default size ? I have tried to change the size under properties but, although the new figures are accepted in the dialogue box, the apparent scale does not change in the view window. ? I ask because, when in an action or chor window and I zoom to fit the model using ctrl,shift, Z it zooms to include the model bone rather than just the model itself ? regards simon Imac/OSX 10.68/ AM16

Working away on a scene in a chor with two figures and having a minor, if irritating problem. Working in Skeletal mode. If working on A and I click just off the bone, it is reverting to the model bone, and then won't allow me to select the intended bone in the window. It has to be selected in the PWS. or I don't click exactly on the intended bone and it selects Figure B instead. Again, it won't allow selection in the window, the shortcut to model has to be chosen in the PWS. Is there a way to isolate the selected model so you can only work on it, until you need to change selection? I've deactivated them in the past and that works but, this scene …

Hey all. I have a design that needs to be printed onto paper. It is a pop up book. But I have never actually printed a template out from A:M. I have an idea as to how to approach it. But I didn't want to waste any time on a method that doesn't get the desired results. Main thing is that I need to print the same physical dimensions as exists on the model template. So if something on the model is say.....3.5 inches on the model, it needs to be 3.5 inches on the physical paper print out. Has anyone tackled a template printout from A:M??

Rob had come up with a cool way to make clouds very realistically tumble in the sky the way real clouds do. My question is, is it possible to create an animation whereby realistic looking clouds take the shape of something recognizable (like the profile of an animal.. a horse? ) and then tumble back into a wispy shape.... I myself am unaware how the clouds would be able to take the necessary shape but maybe someone else does? Tom

As most of you know, "Tin Woodman of Oz" was a full-length 3D animated movie made by this forum using A:M (of course). Some of you participated in it. I'm very proud of it though it never received the acclaim it deserved, I follow the YouTube views of the various parts. In 10 years, the most viewed scene is Nancy Gormanzano's "Hippogyraf Song." (Nancy did several of the songs, she was awesome.) The question I've always had was why does this scene have 3x as many views as the next most popular, and 10x as many views as most of the movie? Working in V17G under OSX 10.65 A problem not previously encountered. Going through a chor in the PWS and trying to set the keys using the pose sliders in the properties box. Working fine until, a short while ago, the mouse disappeared after every click. Went to the desktop and it was there and available, just not in AM ? Reverted to using the pose sliders window rather than properties and it seems OK. Soes anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing the problem ? regards simon

Hi there, besides AM i am using some other programms, one of which has a transportable licence. They install the licence file (if the customer wants) onto a usb stick. That USB stick must be present when you want to run the programm. Is that possible for AM to? That would be so cool and would give me the option to work wit AM at work too ... Hehehehehe. I have a model of double swinging doors with bones and poses that I want to import multiple times into a new model. After the import, I can select all the CP's and translate and rotate them into my desired positions but the bones stay anchored at their imported positions. Is there a way to move the entire model, bones and all, within a model? I'm fairly certain the answer is "No" but I thought I'd ask before doing the grunt work or installing them in the chor.

So lately in V18p, I've been crashing over and over when moving bones to different locations in the PWS bone tree. I click on a bone and drag it to the new location and A:M crashes. It doesn't happen everytime, so I haven't been able to solidly replicate it. But when I'm moving bones in the PWS it crashes. I have noticed that if I'm moving with the CTRL button to duplicate a bone it sometimes happens as well. Anyone else dealing with such an issue.

Sorry for the novel here. My team is nearing the end of post on our current film, and A:M's renderer has been on my mind a lot recently. I'd like to frame these notes as constructively as possible. Since it's gotten so long, I'll throw in some Big Headings for readability--and in hopes of making myself feel really important. I was curious about how A:M shifted the camera for the Multipass DOF effect. This is the image of a very bright, very tiny dot far behind the DOF range of the camera with various pass number settings. I would think that cluster near the center of the higher pass versions would not be ideal. The low number passes seem to be the same every time, but the higher ones change a bit with every restart of A:M

Okay, here's a weird one. I've been messing around with getting my puppet horses set up and decided to add dynamic constraints to the tail. It shows movement in the real time preview, but then when I go to render, it renders the first pass correctly, but all the other passes render the tail in its original position and the result is the tail stays in place. Here's a quick render, showing what I'm talking about. See the ghost tail that's in a lower position? I'm not sure if this is the fault of motion blur or multi-pass. To make things even more bizarre.
