So, I had this idea - it may crash and burn... but here it goes. I need to learn how to model and rig a mouth - and learn it well. I think I'm not the only one. I've been wowed by Victor's mouth rig, and David Simmons "Bertram's Face Rig". Trouble is there are no tuts out there to explain them. David has posted his files and some explanation but for a n00b like me - it's not enough - and I'm still not sure how to well design the MOUTH first (modeling wise) to get rigged well. So I figured I'd make kind of a generic 'mask' face. I'd post it here - we can all iterate the model until we feel it's well done enough. Then I'll start trying to implement one of these boned …

I posted my dice character earlier. I now have a walk cycle for him. I tried constructing it three different ways. First, I tried starting with the down positions, then the contact positions. My final try was starting with the hip up and down motion and then going back to the beginning and, starting with the contact positions, went straight ahead. I liked this one the best. None of them were hard to put together, but I attribute that to A:M's great tools rather than my skill. I am posting my last effort. All comments and crits (of the work, not my religious or political beliefs) welcome! Scott Dice_Walk.mov

Hi all! I was inspired by a recent post by David Dustin of Dustin Productions to attempt modeling and animating a bicycle chain moving around sprockets. So here it is!! I've attached screen shots which you can click to view larger images. Thanks David for the inspiration, and you're welcome to use my project if you have any use whatsoever! BTW, I'm a little nervous, this is my first post to the Showcase, so here goes...but don't be afraid to criticize. (I hope my links show up correctly!) My technique was to create a pose in which each chain link was constrained to path, with a different ease with keyframes at 0%, 50% and 100%. Then the sprockets were syn…

Well, not all that epic. It took an hour to render. For some reason, the grass rendered weird unless I rendered it in Multipass mode. There are five dofferent hair emitters (grass, maiden grass, blakeyed susans, clover, and solomon's seal). The images for each emitter were created using Plant Studio 2(which is available for free from http://www.kurtz-fernhout.com/PlantStudio/ ) It will export plants as bitmaps that aren't antialiased, so they're perfect for image based hair. (It will also export in several 3d formats, and I've gotten 3d plants into A:M as props, but their surface attributes aren't editable, and they tend to look like they're glowing.) The…

Hi Hashers Having finished the third and final storyboard for Bella Bear I decided to do some animation with Bella & Hannah. For this I chose a famous scene from a famous film and decided to replace the characters with mine - bit like the 10 Second club. Anyway, here's what I have done so far - I look forward to any coments and criticsms (I wonder if you can guess what film the scene is from ) Doors_Flick.mov

Howdy: Have an idea for the mini-film contest (shhh!) and decided to test to see if my ending is feasible. Shaggy busts through a curtain. Not much yet, but I decided I'd share. All settings are default except that I lowered the collision radius to 1. endtest.mov

This is to anyone whose work belongs to a label, or anyone who had used pre-recorded music from a commercial band that is carried by a label. Now, in the past for some film work, I have used commercial music and had to go through the artists, their label, ascap, and bmi to get written permission to use the music for our production, along with paying a one time fee (or in some cases no fee as long as we listed everything in the credits). So, here's my question. We are doing a videogame. A popular band asked us if they could do music for the game. In this case it would be all new original music that has not been featured on any work they have done for any label. So, th…

Howdy. I took some mocap data I got from a reputable source and put Shaggy on it. And Shaggy said to me, "Zach, man, I love this motion and all, but GEEZ is it COLD in this computer!" So I gave him a shirt. I think it turned out nice--there are some penetration issues at this point toward the end, and it fails completely when Shaggy actually penetrates himself and leaves the cloth with nowhere to go. More experimentation is in order. Next up--PANTS! ShaggiZachTwo.mov

Here is a sample clip I am working on of the SS Cedric sailing past. I have a PS filtered version with grain and more contrast to simulate a newsreel look, but am having difficulty compressing the final version without the compressor having trouble with the grain effect, any one got any ideas for a work around? The unfiltered version is here for any who want to have a look, it is .wmv format, 519kb. http://www.dsntc.com/SS_Cedric/Cedric.html Ian

Hey folks, I'm a medical student at Case Western and after suffering through a neuroanatomy course at the beginning of this school year a programmer classmate and I decided to change the way the course was taught. For those of you lucky enough to have avoided this subject throughout your lives, a med school neuroanatomy course focuses on the spinal cord and brain locations of various groups of nerves that are functionally related. One of the big challenges is learning the clinical consequences of damage to these groups and how those consequences can change depending on where in the brain/brainstem/spine the damage occurs. Right now, the way the course is taught…

Hello Hashers, Been playin with this idea for awhile as my normal disclaimer no real reason for doing it other than to help on my learning of AM this time "Pose sliders" (on/off and %) mainly. The same thing can be accomplished other ways. The lowdown on the Rig. File contents (zip) appx 30 KB 1- Sun Rig model (Sun Rig x9) 1- Sun Rig Constraints action Load model and action into your project. drag model into your Choreography and drag action file into/onto the Ssun rig model in the Chor. I used a Bulb light but can be changed if you want. Poses Sun position along path (position sun along sun path) Sun scale (small to big) Sun path…

Seeing Johnl3D's Opus inspired me to start working on mine again. I'm still bothered by creases, but I'm starting to feel like maybe I'm getting the hang of splining. Still don't have the mouth done, but I've made some progress. Here are some pics. This is kind of a fake; I'm only doing half and will CFA when it's closer to being done. I just put two instances of the model in the chor and scaled one of them -100 on the x axis.

This doesn't quite fit here, and it doesn't quite fit in WIP. I've finished the animation, but I'm still rendering--and will be for some time! The story came from a sound project I did in college a few years ago. Today I realized that it's easy to add pictures to my posts, so this is my second one of the night. Comments/Crits welcome, but I can't change much at this point. I've rendered in multiple passes and composited in photoshop. I'm compositing the final in after effects. Cheers, Matt

Well I've had AM for 4 months and done too much goofing around. The ol' saying is writer's WRITE, so I guess animators ANIMATE! I've been so busy tweaking characters to be better than the previous version and worrying about rigging and things I can't do that it paralyzed me from doing much. So I decided to just rig something (since I have TSM2 anyway) and jump in and do something, so here's the start. I'm animating this as I go, but consider this version a kind of blocking, because I intend to go back and put in all the detail. Right now I want to get the short story down. It's been fun since it has been fairly quick to do to get it this far, maybe a few hours.…

So, has anyone figured out cloth yet? I have an animation to finish off for someone else and cloth is holding me up right now. I don't want to spend too much longer messing with it to hopefully discover the magic formula. I have made a simple test object with a cape and tested cloth sim in A:M versions 10.5, 11.0t and 11.1f. I still can't get collision detection to work. Any clues? This is pretty urgent! In the attached movie the top two tests are done in 10.5 and 11.0t. The bottom two are both in 11.1f. As you can see collision detection doesn't appear to be working. Does anyone have it working?

The guys at animation mentor.com asked me to produce their mascot as a sculpture. They had the model originally produced in MAYA, but I used animation master for the prep work to get it ready for the mill to cut it out. You will find spike in the models section. Along with spike I posted a sculpture of the corpse head that I used for reference.

Just had to rerender an old title as a favour for a friend, so I thought I'd post it here as well. From memory this was my first commercial test of Skycast. The cockatoo and plane are a long-standing combination, the line artwork is the RFDS' original design. Unfortunately, I never got the chance to animate the cockatoo in a substantial way. The titles were donated for use in the RFDS trek documentary. For those who don't know(Probably most of you , the trek is a bunch of 30 year old cars racing around outback Australia and fundraising for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The bird and the plane were modified from pre-existing models.

I dug up an old shot from a project that eventually moved production overseas. It was only half finished but I liked where it was going (though the director disagreed). Anyway, I wanted to take it to completion. It'll give me a chance to get up to speed on the post 8.5 interface since the last big production I worked on (Day Off the Dead) was all 8.5. I figure I'll document the improvements as I go here. Any and all suggestions, no matter how brutal are welcome. Here's where it was left in Dec. 1999: shot40c (1.81MB QuickTime)

I'm working on a Australian Shepherd model and I'm trying to add hair to the model but I'm wondering is there an easy way to control the hair color? The hair lengths isn't right yet either, but that is such a tedious task to adjust so I'm saving that for later. Correct me if I'm wrong or leaving out an option, but I can control the color of the hair either by: 1.) Model Surface patch color. 2.) Surface color of the hair material. 3.) A image in the Hair material. I was hope was that if I decaled the surface with colors I wanted, those colors would translate to the hair color but that doesn't seem to be the case. A bunch of decals with alphas channels to …

Usually before I mess around with things, I like to fully understand how things work... well, after awhile I finally decided to jump in and just mess with things in AM. I learned a lot from the experience so far, and it has been a ton of fun, so I hope to continue in the future. Anyway, here is a short animation of Thom doing some sort of umm... exercise or something. (more like a very crappy gymnast's routine). It didn't really start out with a plan any more specific than to Animate, so any storyline you think you might see... is an illusion. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, --Ross K. Puh, Finally I managed to get a vespa with rolling wheels following a path. I had much trouble with this, that I canot really explain to myself. I guess I did many things wrong( for instance to going to the start of the animation first ), often when I fiddeled around ,I ended up with the vespa creeping really slow along the path or the wheels not moving at all, then when I deleted all actions to replace them, the path strangly jumped away and I frustradetly started all over with a new chor, often the playhandle didnt work and I had to restart the chor. But finally I got this. Now I have to go on to animating in the chor, next I have to find out how to set k…

Here's a little character I resurrected from a old idea of mine. He's meant to be pretty simple, but I'm not sure he's going to have much emotion without eyebrows, and with button eyes. I was hoping to use mesh deformers on him for some good squash and stretch, but I haven't had much luck or time to experiment with them yet. comments? matt

Heylo guys, I crafted this overnight and thought I might aswell show it to the world, so here goes. Had to use dr. divx to make it small and had to put it on Ftp to be able to "distribute" it. I used Thom and starwarsguys lightsaber in this flick. Link: www.jftp.frac.dk/ThomGoesPro.avi PS: I know his legmovement sucks, but this ain't the final version. I keep trying to render a new, tweaked version, but for some reason it renders in a really crappy quality, even though I'm using the same codecs, settings etc. etc.
