It's always interesting to see how tech folds back upon itself. The latest buzz word in cg hair is something of a convergence between hair and cloth. Super Space Clothoids Whitepaper SIGGRAPH 2013 There is tech/math going on here which I don't claim to follow but when I suggest folks consider using geometry for hair this is the general idea and when one considers the possibilities much of what is outlined can already be created with A:M.

I know DarkTree textures were rolled into AM at some point and the plugin is available...but how do you go about making new textures to use with the plugin? Are they still selling the software? Or did it go the abandonware route? It looks like their website hasn't been updated since 2010.

My computer went haywire again. Everything had to be cleared off. I have my data files and program files backed up, but that doesn't do me much good in installing the program. I am reinstalling A:M version 18. (I have the permanent one, rather than the subscription.) It says my activation key has already been used. I also have a file named "master0.lic" I put that in the folder. I also have a folder called Get host id for license. I have forgotten what to do with any of this. Thanks for your help. I sent a request to support@hash.com but have not heard back. There is more information in my email. I think I heard before that sometimes answers come a little more quickly…

I bring this up again, but I am very much opposed to the subscription model which was introduced some years ago. It is not the monetary outlay, but the principle of dependency which irks me to no end. I also find this protectionist attitude to be the greatest hindrance of proliferating this software and its qualities, and it will be the ultimate cause of its demise. I do have a couple of subscriptions and I will let them expire with no plans to renew in spite of my great affinity to this program. I also find that most improvements since V12 are simple window dressing, or entirely useless inclusions of open source libraries for fluids and cloth etc., but coupled to a…

Hi, I don't know if it can interest somebody, but just in case, I post anyway. It is just some ideas and reflections about imagination's tools to help to model and rigg more quickly in AM. The idea, is to regroups modeling, armature, weigts and fan bones in a few clicks. I write the ideas in a PDF with pictures. PDF

Ghastly and miserable, the previous three days in Texas were. Winters here are usually "mild" with maybe one day with snow and several nights where it gets below freezing. And it's been trending warmer over the last few decades. But last weekend the coldest weather in all the time I've been here arrived and somehow caused a collapse of the whole electricity-generating system. They warned us in advance to expect rolling blackouts of 15 minutes to an hour. I was ready for that but at my house the power went out and stayed out for more than two days. Electric heat is all I've got so this is what it came to... warming my feet by candles. That wa…

I have a number of files that have been generated in Photoshop and saved as .tga files. AM will not import them, although it imports .tga files that were made by AM in the past. Do you have any advice for me? Thanks, marigoldatwork.

I just received a new computer for my birthday and Christmas. I can try it out for a week and take it back to the store, if I want. I sent in a request for a trial version of A:M 19 to see how the graphics card works on this computer. If you see my name and wonder why I am requesting a trial version after all these years, that's why.

Here's a very interesting short told in an ultra-stylistic way: No real dialogue but lots of animated progression. Interestingly, or should I say, "exactly as planned by its creators", I had no clue where the plot was heading but in the end I found myself saying, "but of course, that's exactly how the resolution of this story should play." [vimeo]70975460#[/vimeo] Direct Link Note: While this short was animated in another product in my estimation it could have just as easily been created in A:M. Added: The style of this and a few other shorts making the rounds these days has me thinking of Sebastian's recent foray into similar lighting and styliz…

Posting this here mainly so that I can find it later. This has roughly to do with a few thoughts I have related to 'drawing with splines' (as opposed to click/extend) and maintaining curvature (as much as possible) as control points are removed from or added to a spline and of translating/converting raster/bitmap lines into vector lines/splines. https://github.com/ideasman42/curve-fit-nd#origin The guy who adapted this code (Campbell Barton) is well known in Blender/Linux circles. Original code is from Screen Gems, updated with insights from OpenToonz and further enhanced by Barton. The library is described thusly: A (related) command line utility f…

A brief history. I bought the subscription back in November of 2020. On December 4th of the same year, my computer died (motherboard, video card, powersupply). The hard drive was undamaged. Anyway, I had the machine repaired. Everything's working the way it should, but I couldn't get AM to load. So I uninstalled it, then reinstalled it. Now it's asking for the activation key which I put in and it won't take it. It gives me three tries and at the end says that the key is already in use. It is, by me. I contacted support and got an auto reply to contact Jason Simonds on the forum but I have no idea where he is on here.

For those of you wanting to move your A:M work into the communal online world and perhaps eventually make a few $ in the process here's a platform that is in early stage of fielding and yet considerably mature underneath the hood. https://www.otakhi.com/pages/overview Here's a current look at the repository: https://www.otakhi.com/pages/home.php This would be for those of you that like to use code as a key component is three.js (javascript) but the platform states that writing javascript is "purely optional**" as the modular approach is designed to be drag and drop. My guess would be that a trip through a program such as Blender would be required to get y…

Hello- Simple question (but it has me stumped)... When you drag a decal into the model window, the decal can be scaled...but can it be rotated? In the past I have always just rotated the image before I import it into AM..but it would be nice if the decal could be rotated in the model window.. Is this possible? Thanks for any info.. Tom

It's been awhile since we've seen a post about 3D Printers on Kickstarter... Here's one that recently launched that is already exceeding $2 million of their initial $50K goal with 24 days still to go. At a glance I'd say there is some interest in the technology... It's certainly small. Added: It seems the majority of folks are opting in to one of the various $299 options. AND NOTE... MOST OF THESE OPTIONS ARE GONE. What they appear to be doing is adding new $299 options but with subsequently later release dates. As of this moment it looks like that tier would expect a February 2015 shipping date. The Micro: The First Truly Consumer 3D Printer …

Okay, this is probably a pass for most people but I see some potential in it and therefore value. Since availability of these offers are of limited time I want to let people know it's currently available. The gist: This is via Shareware on Sale (I've definitely warmed up to this company and their approach although standard disclaimers apply when installing any software) Offer Efficient To Do List (Efficient is the software company) What it does: Creates basic To Do lists and allows organization of those lists Normal cost: approx. $30 Free through SOS offer for the next two (2) days. This program is almost too simple and yet it has a few things…

I have a character riding in a vehicle that looks flat and washed out. The character and vehicle are part of the same model. The character was placed into the vehicle via action file. The vehicle looks fine after rendering as does the rest of the scene, except for the character riding in the vehicle. The character in the vehicle looks fine in the real time render. Other characters look fine in the final render. When I say flat and washed out, I mean no shading at all. There is just flat color in the shape of the character. What am I leaving out? Thanks.

I would love to find some fellow A:M users down here on the South Coast of Mass. I live at the tip of the red arrow, between Fall River and New Bedford. I know that confidentiality precludes giving out names and phone numbers, but if I could discover whether or not we have other users close by (or, reasonably so) I'd get on Craig's List, or tap into a friend's Facebook page. Any help would be appreciated.

A conversation with another A:M-er reminded me of this incident... About 30 years ago I answered an ad in the Dallas paper from a company looking for someone to do computer graphics. It wasn't much of a company. It was just a kid in his apartment. I showed him my AMIGA graphics. He said he was making "shareware" games. "How do you make money if you're giving it away?" I asked. "The game is free but then they pay for more levels," he said. He said he'd call me but that was the last I ever heard from... John Carmack.

This question came up in Live Answer Time today and I thought I would post the official word from Hash (link is to store page): Can A:M use multiple cores? A:M is currently not fully multi-core-optimized. However A:M is able through Netrender (included for free in v16.0 and up) to use multiple cores for rendering. OpenMP is used to utilize multiple cores for several operations. More operations are altered to use multiple cores in each update. Since A:M is a rendering application, it is recommended to use a CPU as fast as possible to decrease rendering time. So if you have an 8 core system, base AM may not make full use of all 8 cores however …

Hello, My ignorance on the subject and my bad english, may explain a topic off-topic. From what I understood, It was not possible to use Visual C + + express with the SDK, because this version does not come with the MFC and don't support it. While surfing, I found a link that explains How to compile MFC code in Visual C++ Express :. I do not know if it's useful, and if it is sufficient to create plugins for AM ( I do not know Visual Basic C + + express, C++, and neither the SDK), but by ignorance and by any chance, I give the link. http://www.codeproject.com/KB/MFC/MFCinVis...dioExpress.aspx

Any help would be appreciated, even if it's news that I have gone truly mad and imagined the entire memory. Help me find that Yak again and thanks in advance.

I've been compressing with a relation 1Mb / 1Minute video + size of audio track at 32 kbps, that's to say, a video of 6…

Here's a site that let you play back youtube video frame by frame and at various speeds. I'm guessing there are some other sites that do the same or similar but this one caught my attention. I'll link with a video to one of Robert Holmen's animations because it's well worth reviewing. Note that linking into the video with frame and timing set is by the parameters added at the end of the link. In this case Time (t) and Speed (s) added as &t=0&s=0.25. http://rowvid.com/?v=pDqKABYtDB0&t=0&s=0.25
