Hats off to Steffen and Gerald (and to all that helped) for this feature! I'm not much of a modeler and I'm not a big fan of using props, but this is fantastic. This is the first time trying this and this is what I have after a couple of hours. The spline layout may not be the best, but it's a start. Still needs work, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

I was over at CGtalk an somebody asked about a secondary modeling program and I pointed them towards Hash. This is a response from one of the forum members there. I had to attach the file because it would not let me copy and paste. I am not trying to go into a what products is the best but I thought his answer was not really truthful about what AM can achieve. Down at the bottom of the screen forum members should start to see social media icons for various platforms. With those icons, A:M Users should be able to share the posts here in the A:M Forum with all their friends and relatives. Please let us know if you have any issues with that feature and we will investigate.

Some soft body effects can be done with Simcloth. PRJ: SpringCloth005 SIMMED.prj Cloth set to "Springs" and suitable stiffness will try to return to its original shape after being deformed. The outer edge of the grid is an Attach Group, to prevent the cloth from being knocked away. @ivanbryan82

I needed to make a reference image for some characters and when I imported some older models that use the old rigs I see the bones are assigned and weighted but I can't pose the characters. Just the bones move in the chor. Did something change that I missed? Thanks

I recall when radiosity renders took hours. Now it's a few minutes. I dropped some old models from the AM CD into my tiny house room lit with radiosity. All the lighting is just that one bulb light near the ceiling. Mach 5 Racer: BioBot: MotorCycle: Janitor of War: Space Marine. Something about the surface specularity on this model and the previous one is causing the conspicuous bright spots in the room ( I think).

I'm using the 3d connexion space navigator with the "Anywhere" driver and noticed the Zoom and Pan up/Down seemed to be transposed. Zoom functions as Pan up/down and Pan up/Down functions as Zoom. Not a big deal but just didn't notice it before. Anyone have the regular space mouse driver? This might be specific to the anywhere driver. Anywhere Driver is here: http://www.3dconnexion.com/supported-software/anywhere.html Curious. Thanks

Is there a standard way to get a sphere ? I ask because I was trying to have a go at the current animation challenge and was using the ball made for last weeks brief. Only to find that its not as spherical as I had thought. The original was a lathed spline which had been adjusted to get the correct curvature, or so I thought Is there a standard method for such a primitive shape? regards simon

I'm trying to animate a ball spinning on a finger and wondered what might be the best way to achieve that ? Tried using the repeat option in the graph editor under post interpolation but with no joy. Presently keying it every frame to rotate through 176-9 degrees. Is there another possible way to do this ? Any help gratefully received. regards simon

It seems like the spline architecture has radically shifted. I've been noticing strange weirdnesses over the last few updates and it seems that they don't behave as they once did. I tried to simply combine two splines on my most recent model and the bias handles remain separated for some reason on each side resulting in a "peak." This is not ideal if you want a flowing line. Attached shows the splines/ bias....before and after joining. This is very weird.

Hello, I am looking for a video illustrating a basic explanation on the spring bone system: the procedure of installation and use? thanks in advance Greetings

I've never tried a "Spring System" before! They were introduced as part of the previous cloth system. Although that scheme is gone, the tools for making springs are still there. Unfortunately, the essential "bone to spring" constraint seems not to survive a save and reload. That will be a bug to report.

Is the spring system dead? Also will there be any tutorial on how to apply softbody in parts of a character?

I was taking a project back and forth between v16 and v17 and noticed that I couldn't see sprites in an on-screen progressive in v16 but I can see them in v17. They show up in shaded mode in both but v16 didn't show them in progressive render. Did that really not work in v16?

I'm not sure if anyone else has experienced this, but it seems as though SSS negates smoothing using "averaged normals" or Porcelain (same thing done as a material). Also, "average normals" and Porcelain appear to give slightly different results even though they should be the same. Anyone know how to get around this? Here are some examples (the names of the files denote the settings):

While pursuing an AMReport Steffen found a way to optimize the Sub-Surface Scattering code. My first simple test gives promising results: that's almost 60% more frames per minute. This change is in v17 beta 5 available now!

Hi, I've already Emailed Support and Stephan directly, but yesterday when I went to renew my sub there was an error at purchase confirmation that read as though the order hadn't been accepted. I tried another couple of times and got the same error. Giving up I went back to my account summary and saw I'd been charged for 3 subscriptions! I later got order confirmations for all 3 subs but I only need 1 and it's my wife's credit card I need this sorting as quickly as possible so she doesn't get annoyed at me. Plus it told me the orders hadn't been accepted so it's not like I deliberately bought 3 subs. Anyway the 3 order numbers are 8277, 8278 and 8279. I have act…

Hey. Has anyone else noticed that sometimes the rotation handle on the model doesn't match the axis in the graph editor? I've seen this happen on several occasions in V17 this year. But I thought I'd at least mention it here. I ran into another case today. If you look at this screen capture, you'll notice that I'm moving the X(red) axis rotation of the bone, but in the graph editor it is registering as the Z(blue) axis. That seems very odd and can get confusing when animating. Has anyone else had this happen? Cheers, William

Hello, Work has been killing me today was my shortest day in 2+ weeks at 12 hours. I'm going to get back on top of emails tonight/tomorrow after work. I also see that I can not see the 'help desk' forums I will fix that too. It looks I have been missing a few posts there. I will update the FAQ to cover this question. But if users get 'wrong host -4' email support@hash.com after following these steps. https://www.hash.com/faq/index.php?action=artikel&cat=13&id=17&artlang=en If they send the old master0.lic file we can see what changed.

Over in the 'Buying a Cafe' topic Steve was kind enough to share his settings for Sub Surface Scattering. I know there are several topics on settings but this is something I've longed to understand versus just occasionally reference. His settings were: SSS with diffuse color of 253, 227, 185 SSS half distances 3,2,1 SSS extend group to avoid SSS borders General if not naive assumption: The SSS diffuse color settings operate as R,B,G settings in that the first number represents how much Red, the second how much Blue and the third how much Green. True/False? No where close to reality? If true then I would assume Steve's settings have a majorit…

I just renewed my subscription for 2011 and want to comment on the steps for those going through the same process. Subscribing may not be the preferred method for everyone but there are benefits for those that do. Subscribing to A:M is a very straightforward process: - Visit the A:M Store. - Purchase a subscription. - Install A:M. - (If renewing remove the master.lic file from your master folder) - Activate your new subscription. If troubleshooting is needed here are some general tips: - You won't need to uninstall, just delete or remove the .lic file from your master folder. It will most likely be named master0.lic - You can verify your exp…

Shown are three copies of the head of the Jungle Queen. Each head uses single attribute "skin" materials. The leftmost head material has subsurface scattering turned OFF while it's turned ON in the rightmost head. The centre head has subsurf. scat. turned OFF on it's right side while it's turned ON on it's left side. These three models are arranged in a chor that uses a single "sun" style light source and the global color (256, 256, 256) for ambient occlusion. With subsurf. scat. turned off in the camera, all three heads are screen rendered as expected with just sun, just ambient or both illuminating it. When subsurf. scat. is enabled in the camera and the only illum…

Trying to finish off the Learning curve, using V18g in OSX 10.85. Made some modifications to one of the models, saved it as an iteration. Looked ok visually so tried to test it it as a render using the action window previously worked in. When I tried to do a quick render, the process seemed to stall, with the message appearing, "calculating the visible patches". That went on for some minutes and eventually aborted that render. Tried again, the render crashed the program. Opened up again, same project, same settings, same problem with calculating the visible patches. Went out to do some food shopping and leave it to get on with it. Ju…

There was a lot of interest in the Cap Your Mo, Summer Mo-Cap Challenge! The most frequent question I got was, "Do I really have to show myself in the video?" "Why, of course!" Imagination Technologies has come out with a couple of real-time raytrace graphics cards including the Caustic R2500. They are a bit expensive at the moment, but I expect they will come down over time. Is there any interest at Hash in adding support for these in the future? It would provide a great capability for previewing animations. You can read about them here: http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/01/she...y-tracing-card/ -Vance

Hi there, the new forum design looks great! I didnT find a section for techincal questions though, so i put it here. and wheres the whats new button now? I am still on AM 15h and discovered surfacebaking bbut: sometimes it works sometimes it doesnt. Any ideas what factors might influence that. Ram and grapics and render power shouldnt be the problem. Maybe some oldtimeuser has made similar expiriences and found the solution? Thanks for any help

This is something I've been playing with I thought people might find interesting... Here's a render of two models. It's the same mesh copied from one file and placed in another. The surprise part is that they both have the exact same surface properties! The difference is that the first model is significantly smaller than the second one. It's scale has been changed in the choreography to match the second model. But notice that the roughness settings have been scaled to match. I've found I can get some interesting looks this way. Obviously, you could also experiment with the roughness amount and scale to get the look, but it's interesting to me that the…

Still plugging away at ska dance project when time allows. Presently redoing the head in the light of the example David posted a few weeks back. Have encountered a strange problem though. It still needs lots of tweeks and readjustments but, the model doesn't want to acept the surface colour properties assigned to it? For example, the lips have an RGB setting of 208.180.160 assigned to the group but it doesn't show up in shaded mode or quick render. Can anyone kindly suggest the problem and possible soution ? simon OSX 10.68 V17g DH 001.mdl

I was just about to start celebrating after Robert helped me mix Toon and normal on the same model in a render. It was going to save a lot of time. Then I saved the project and odd things happened. I had modified one of the models, Delivery Man, that came with AM, giving him a beard and a dress shirt. This is what it looked like with Normal render. V17, OSX When I did a Toon render ( before he new modifications ), I noticed some mesh penetration, I tried Robert's suggestion and was really pleased with the result, except I noticed some more penetration and spent a while fixing it. Saved it and went out to do some analog 3D while it rendered …

We've had .ai (Adobe Illustrator) import for a long time. You can make an outline in a vector art program and A:M can import the .ai file and bevel/extrude it to make a 3D shape. That is great for making mechanical parts. However, inexpensive programs that can export a .AI file are still not common. V19 will add suport for SVG. SVG (ScalableVectorGraphics) is another vector format and is supported by free programs like InkScape. InkScape appears to be a full-featured vector graphics editor and should work well for A:M purposes.

A project waiting in the wings is gaining ground but I've ran into a minor glitch that I"d like to see resolved. Specifically, I note that when changing the SVN repository setting to another location the TWO film repository URL gets tacked on to the end of the new one. This is only inside A:M Community and SVN can be run just fine outside of A:M so there is an easy workaround but I'm wondering if there might be something (a cache?) I need to clear in order for the SVN repository location/URL to be properly set? Any guesses or insights? A guess or two from me might be that the setting is stored in the WIndows registry or... A:M is finding the URL in a dif…
