Just informing you all that I've joined the CGTalk Machineflesh Challenge. You can find the thread at http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=130145 I don't think I have a chance of winning... but if I get a single vote I'd be happy. Check it out. I highly encourage others to try it out. It's a 3 month challenge and it's a great way to learn, show off your skills, and represent A:M in the larger CG community. Zachary Taich

** UPDATE: 4/15/04: scroll down ** Hey there, hashin' community. I'm in a pickle with a new character model. I'm making these fat, bean/potato-shaped robots. Their bodies have a very smooth, regular surface, which is the source of my worry. Have a look. (Hands and eyes coming soon.) Belly Bot, body Belly Bot, mouth My problem is with the mouth. Victor Navone's posts on Giant are really awesome. I wanted to try out his system, but I think it demands more skill than I have at the present time... So I'll stick with poses. Anyway, you can perhaps see my problem. This character's mouth adheres to a surface that is best described as conic -- it curv…

Hello pros, cons and lurkers, I've been tearing what's left of my hair out trying to decide if my choice(s) for my first short short is/are a good one. I had originally decided on 'Donny' and posted him here in the WIP section. Well, as I have decided to learn rigging in a serious way, and have yet to do any real animation, I think I may not be ready for that short. But, I am itching to do a short and figured ... hey, I have this worm character laying around (get it? laying around?) why not design a short with him in mind. So, this is what I'm thinking. This character let's call him HeWorm for now, wants to walk upright. His wife, let's call her Sh…

In the short I'm working on, I have a ghost that appears for a bit and would like it so that he is not only transparent, but also casts a small bit of light on whatever he is near. This is a brief exercise into trying to create the effect of that. It still needs a bit of tweaking, but let me know what you think. Ghost of Thom Sorenson 3 compressed 8 sec. 508k

My first festival short, "Marboxian," is now up on A:M Films. [Link] Parts of it are downright painful for me to watch now, but it's had a good run this year. Now I just need to finish up "Council of Mice" in a month. Yeek. Which reminds me, I have a call to make... Hope y'all like it- -M@

Paul Harris of Scotia Publishing was looking for a modeller. http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6371 I suppose he found one, but I can't resist showing off my version with the reference image. Hope I don't cross any boundries here. ===================================================== It's not by any means a good likeness, but fair to close. I know he looks a bit older than the ref. I figure this is due to the elongation of the face and narrowing of the neck. The mesh needed more room for the mesh to be manipulated. The clothing is a bit too smooth, but I prefer not to deal with a dense mesh. At present the mesh is at 3044 patch count and sho…

It's funny how inspiration can take you where you didn't think you were going. Case in point, John's thread on his Kapsule characters. I found them to be very cute and creatively stimulating. I have this pair of grape characters that I thought about redoing, so I did. Only thing is that in the redoing, I created totally new characters and I'm kinda surprised at the results. These characters are "bitties" (there was this elderly african-american woman who would stop by the pet store I used to manage every easter for her "bitties" -- baby chicks. The name stuck with me and I'm delighted to be able to use it) and they are kinda elfin, sorta fairy-like people. …

I am making a Star Wars Fanfilm taking place during the Clone Wars and need some help... I've made a few things, including a Battle Droid, that you can see at: http://www.geocities.com/akastudiossite/battledroid I need some help making a Clone Trooper. I'm no good with human form and armor and things like that. If anyone could even attempt to make one for me I'd be very thankful. I'd give you all the credit for it in the beginning and end credits of my film and send you clips that I use your model in as my film progresses. Please send any Clone Trooper models (or actually, any Star Wars models that you have, I might be able to use them, but I REALLY…

It's about time I learned how to do some character animation with lot's of "squash and stretch" (some would probably say period) so.. here's my first attempt at a character that I think could be a natural choice for such abuse. My idea is to assign animated distortion boxes to all his main components. Arm and forearm bones, eyes and eyesockets etc. I have no idea how well this will work, but it's something I've been wanting to try for awhile. No bones, other then for distorted eye's, or final textures at this point. The Darktree on the main body is going to have to go as render times were ridiculous. Comments criticisms and whatnot all appreciated. F…

This is based off of a beautifully lit photo of model Sachiko Kokubu. I still have more work to do on the hands, face, and cloth wrinkles, but it's mostly finished. The hair, skin, and cloth are all rendered with reflections, though the bump maps on the skin diffuse them a bit. The ribs are the only major area that I used bump mapping to cheat actually modeling the form. As always, any and all criticism is welcome. http://www.angelfire.com/film/noanoa/kokubu.html Noah

Due to angelfire policy. Or you can right click, push properties, copy the full address shown in the box, and paste it into the Address bar. Now, my own critiques about the animation: I think there should have been some tilting of the teeth. Your critiques please!

Hi pals, here is my character for the image contest about heroes. His name is "Toribio", but may be I change the name to "Torito" or "SuperT" or another. He is a defensor of the animals's rights and goes to the ruedo (arena) to fight with the toreros and save the condemned bull. Obviously, it's a joke, I do respect all the cultures but I love the animals and I do not like that the animals are mistreated. Now, I'm modeling the body, let me know what you think, any comments about the character and name are appreciated.

Hi, guys. It's been a while. 8 month project and not yet over. I've worked with Dr. Eric Drexler to design and animate a nanotechnology device of the future. We are not just making science fiction pictures. This is as real a design as we can make it even though it will be ten years or more before we can build it. Dr. Drexler has three published books in nano and is considered by many to be the father of this industry. He co-founded the Foresight Institute, www.foresight.org The device of this animation is a desktop factory which can take in acetylene, tear it apart and create product from the atoms. I have always been interested in nanotechnology since I read …

http://www.campbellanimation.com/ We've been talking about BVH Mo-Cap down in the 'reusable motion' forum, and inspired by Zach Brewster-Geisz and Colin Freeman's cool animations and guided by Will Sutton's motion capture tutorial I was able to browse free BVH files thru bvhfiles.com via their 'BVHplayer utility' , import it into A:M and constrain it to my TSM2 rigged character. My character (Gurly Girl) also has long V11 hair so the effect of the hair on the real motion is...I think...pretty cool. But then, I like bus fumes too. This doesn't quite fit here, and it doesn't quite fit in WIP. I've finished the animation, but I'm still rendering--and will be for some time! The story came from a sound project I did in college a few years ago. Today I realized that it's easy to add pictures to my posts, so this is my second one of the night. Comments/Crits welcome, but I can't change much at this point. I've rendered in multiple passes and composited in photoshop. I'm compositing the final in after effects. Cheers, Matt

I finished my GoldSmith beetle model, textured it, rigged it and put it it into a scene. And the render was so stink'n cool (Or atleast that's what I think) I put it up for you guy's to feast your eyes on. I mean if I didn't know for sure that I would break my nose and anything else possible to brake doing a back-flip, I would be doing them all around the room right now. Tell me what you think. I wnat to here your comments and crits. But know that changes won't take place, because now that I'm done with this render I'm moving on to other projects. P.S. This scene was done using one light and no radiosity. Yeah, I can't figure it out either.

I like to balance a little good news with a little bad news... THE BAD: Here is an example of the 'render anomoly' where my shadows 'pop' and I am wondering if anyone gets this upon rendering animations. THE GOOD: BEER! I recently modeled and animated a nice glass of beer! TO SEE the GOOD and BAD: Roll over my avatar and you will see a button to play the avatar full quicktime. THE BEER: The cool stuff with the beer (still dinking with it) is the bubbles and the auto gravity pose and the empty pose. For the bubbles, I made two :15 animations in AdobeAfterEffects of rising bubbles with an alpha. I then applied those cookie-cut style to geometry cut an…

Hi all - I've been meaning to do this for a long time. One of the things that my mini movie work proved to me was/is that I need to work on lighting. I've started this thread so that I might gain as much input into the process as possible from anyone who wants to comment. This first exercise is supposed to be an outdoor setup, I'm going for afternoon sun. I understand that this isn't the most interesting from a character and modeling standpoint, but that is not my intent here. Thanks for any thoughts. Doug
