I haven't tried to run Animation Master for probably five years. In that time I've changed Macs several times. Today I tried to install it using the Classic environment. No luck; or I should say I thought I was successful at first, only to find out that A:M couldn't see the original disc through Classic when I went to run it. I have Virtual PC 7.0.2 with Windows XP and tried to install it there. This time the app told me I had to upgrade Win NT with drivers for D3D. Only problem was, I was beyond NT (why doesn't A:M know this? Is the OS version hard coded?) and DO have D3D drivers. As it happens, I've been using Virtual PC since version 3, when it was a Connecti…

I dug out my DVDs from SIGGRAPH 2003 and 2004 today, and the movies no longer play. I went to Techsmith's Camtasia site and downloaded and installed the latest QuickTime component for the Ensharpen Codec (1.2) for my Intel Mac, but no luck. I've done the restart, repair permissions, etc. to no avail. Has someone posted a solution to this in this forum in the past, perhaps? (QuickTime 7 Pro, Intel Mac).

I'm pretty sure Giulio Porta's tutorials have been linked here in the forum before but it's very possible that some have not seen them. They are especially useful to those who are new to A:M. For instance, here is a tutorial on modeling (and texturing) a very basic Eye: Glass Eye Tutorial Guilio provides extensive information on Modeling, Rigging, Texturing and Animating with a focus on Fish, Birds and Humans. The tutorials have been used at Northern Virginia Community College's Annandale Campus. Check it out: Spring 2011 Syllabus, Tutorials and Resources

Yay! Yves's website (which when last I checked was offline) is currently online: For those of you that really want to look deeply into A:M's lighting his site is well worth your time. http://ypoart.com/index.html Here is a link to his now classic tutorial on lighting: http://ypoart.com/tutorials/lighting/index.php You'll find lots of useful information and resources at site. This may be old news to some but if it serves to help even one person improve their 3D rendering... Just go now and visit his site.

Well, I bumped into this when I was about ready to use A:M to render out an image sequence as a rotoscope in a new choreography. Import your image sequence by right clicking the images section of the project work space and select Import... -> Animation or Image Sequence. Browse to your rendered frames from NetRender or A:M and select the lowest numbered one. i.e. - testrender000.png Then when they are all imported, right click the image and select "Save Animation as..." In the Save Animation As window click the button with the three dots in it to choose your path and file type. (...) I chose AVI as my output with uncompressed frames. (Changed i…

i don´t know if something similar has been postet before, i couldn´t find anything. we all know the problem: you love the soft AO shadows. but when you light a scene and you need to light the ground model as well, your soft shadows around the feet of your character will almost disappear completely, depending on the intensity of your additional light source. if you don´t need to light your ground model, you could prevent that with the use of light lists. but let´s say you want to have your character standing in a fairly bright spotlight, and you want the spotlight to effect the floor as well. your fantastic looking shadows will almost completely be gone. so …

Creating and Editing Custom Toolbars As an example of toolbar editing, this video shows how to create an onscreen replacement for the Numeric Keypad. Errata: at 06:27 I say that the Perspective/Orthogonal Toggle is not normally implemented on the Numeric Keypad. That was possibly true when I recorded the video in 2013. However, in 2024 it is certainly implemented on the "9" key of the Numeric Keypad. I recommend placing that button on the upper-right corner of the custom toolbar we are making and placing the "Increase Subdivisions" at the bottom. I updated my Nvidea graphics card driver and noticed it includes a screen-capture utility! SO- I made a video showing my method of adding a BVH motion-capture file to a rigged(TSM2) A:M character. I apologize for poor video quality and you may need to pause here and there to see what I am doing- but it is all quite straightforward utilizing simple constraints (Translate To and Orient Like) There are many 'free bvh' files to be found on resources thru-out the web. Here is a folder of older files I DL'd about 20 years ago that was made free by Santa Monica Studios to get you started: https://www.dropbox.com/s/xc74lexfqc3ymnr/SantaMonicaStudios.zip?dl=0 30mb Here…

Hi, Could someone post key links about libraries all in one place? I now have several models and materials, and I would like to add shortcuts with pictures, (I think Rodney posted some icons for materials on the extras CD, or maybe the 2005 CD--not all materials come up....? I saw a screenshot I think, but can't find it now....) know how to edit .lbr files if I need to (and know why I would) and how to restore them if I mess up. add some of the stuff from the extras CD. I was able to re-link the main Hash CD library in v.12 (Mac), but as I have the space, I'd like to add some things from the extras CD and get it all organized. I'm sure there ar…

Hi - I keep seeing references to Holmes's wonderful tuts but I can't find them. I found a couple of links but they go in circles. If Holmes is reading this, or anyone else who knows, please send me links to your/his tutorials, particularly those on rigging. On the subject, I'm making a hand rig and would appreciate any tuts or how tos for basic and advanced hand constraints. Thanks Much, Doug

This was for Thumperness to show how to get a single spline to show up on a render. He wanted to use it for a bowstring but it can be useful in making the edges of some geometry in a model really show, as well as for ropes, cords, cables etc… Its maybe not as polished as one of Rob's vids but hopefully clear enough to follow. In a pinch, A:M can be used to assemble several stereoscopic shots into one video. StereoscopicEditing_h500.mov As mentioned in the video, there are some YouTube settings: Under "Basic Info" in the search term tags section put yt3D:aspect=w:h, where w:h is the width to height frame aspect ratio. Under " Advanced Settings" set "3D video" to "This video is already 3D" and "Side by side: Right video on the left side"

Dione is one of Saturn's many unusual moons. It always presents the same face in its forward direction leaving one side light and the other side dark. You can examine this result from any angle if you make your own Dione model! Download the rectangular projection of Dione's surface that was recently featured at Astronomy Picture of the Day... http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap141107.html Then apply it to a sphere to make you own model of Dione. Choose either "cylindrical" or "spherical" application and compare the visible result. I suspect spherical will be the most correct one. Unfortunately it is not an elevation map so you can't make actual mountains and…

How to use the Snapshot feature to create precisely aligned decal stamps. https://youtu.be/TKm0_7HuqMs In the video I forgot to mention that if you want more resolution for your decal than the original Snapshot provides, resize it in your paint program before you do any painting. The higher-res decals you create will still drop into A:M with correct alignment.

Hi hashers, Modelling takes skill, I understand, you'd like to get a complete hold of it? And modelling is an art. I think, you'll agree that art begins with a pencil and paper. I'm trying to understand the need for an online art and modelling school. Where, you'll learn figure and environment drawing one to one from an artist. It can be a bootcamp for you to be more comfortable in visualising your characters and animations. And you can start regardless of your background in art. Also, from here would you like to go on learning modelling in depth using A:M one to one from a mentor? Would you like to join such a online school if available? Satyajit

Nowadays the A:M Forum is really the community's FAQ but long long ago in much more ancient times their lived the A:M FAQ. Some of the information is still as valid as ever while others have been outdated for quite a while. Still its a treat to read through and revisit the glory days of yesteryear. The names alone are worth the read. ...and the best is yet to come! For those that haven't seen it and those that haven't visited in awhile: The Animation:Master FAQs

I have no problem playing the sound in Choreography or Action modes. But, most of the time, I can't get sound to play in my .avi or .mov file after I render animation from the choreography mode. I never have this problem if I created the sound in the Action mode and render. Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong?

While you have the Tools>Customize Window open, not only can you drag individual buttons from the window to toolbars, but you can move the existing buttons around too (or remove them). Tool bars are also undockable (>Allow Docking). When they are free floating you can re-size them to shapes other than a single row. It's a bit like doing one of those sliding tile puzzles, but I made this "Views" tool panel that mimics the arrangement of the keyboard number pad. I added the subdivision up and down buttons and the Turn button to fill out extra spaces. One note... in V15f the "Views" buttons are missing from the Customize window, but if you turn…

I don't think I've ever seen Oliver's youtube tutorials for A:M. Where the heck have I been? Here's one where he starts to set up a book with turning pages based on Kevin Detwiler and Robert Holmen's example posted here in the forum. Note that this is a multi-part tutorial (in 5 parts) and is Tutorial 40 in the series. xhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tfgDqGe9GSk Here's the collecton: xhttps://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLwmsT_c4rTUaJZP7RPzs1i7tdY-LuwKgn He states: Thanks Oliver!

"Overshoot" in animation is when something moves out to a point then retracts a bit. It's a way of making something seem like it got over-stretched, that it reached the end of its rope, that great effort was involved Here, some herons exhibit overshoot in their mating dance. The head reaches far out for the big squawk, but settles back to a more relaxed position. I not a bird expert but I think the male bird on the left is trying to impress the female bird on the right with how far he can stretch his neck and she's showing him how far he really needs to go before it's a deal. She's not going to jump in the nest with just anyone!

I have these older videos if anyone is interested. Not sure how relevant they are nowadays, but someone may have a use for them. If so, let me know and we'll figure something out. Just throw me a fair price, and we can go from there. Sorry if this is not allowed in here, just don't approve if not, just seemed like the most logical place though. Wish I had the time to play with A:M like I used to....

An Onion Skin toolbar has been added to A:M so that you don't have to return to the Options>Onion Skin panel whenever you need to change the most commonly used settings. To enable the Onion Skin Toolbar go to Tools>Customize>Toolbars and check "Onion Skin" The Toolbar has five controls Onion Skin Mode ON/OFF (default keyboard shortcut: SHIFT+5) Keyframe Mode ON/OFF. ON shows only onion skins at the time of keyframes of the currently selected object*&^. OFF shows onion skins in normal time increments (every frame if Step is set to 1) (a keyboard shortcut for this can be defined in Tools>Customize>Keyboard "Onion Toggle …
