Fly dude is here. he is a low patch, fast render model. All he needs are some bones then I can animate him (ah-hem) on the fly. All comments are welcome. Jerry Seider

Hey List, I'm modeling a character in 10.5k+ and I'd like to get some advice as to how I can close some patches and avoid the artifacts visible in the attached picture. I've made sure that none of the intersections are peaked but I can't seem to get a smooth surface Thanks for any help. Gary

Thought I'd move Maggie over to the WIP so I don't spend so much list time. Warning: graphics overload (4 shots). She's become very soft, almost cartoony now. I'd kind of like to try and push her back to a little more realism. I've tried using specular highlight to get the glint in her eyes to become alive, but it's not really working. I'm going to try a clear overlayer tomorrow to see how that works. Any other hints would be welcome. I did move the decal a bit and it does improve the look. She's got an extra ring on the lips now, and the upper half of the jumpsuit is modelled as you can see. The arm is attrociously dense, but …

IDL stood for Interactive Distance Learning. This is an opening I made to start off training broadcasts we used to do back when Nortel was somewhat richer than it is today. It was meant to represent the Distance Learning concept of people from various locations gathering "virtually" (a real happening word at the time) to hear from a remote instructor. I did everything except the video montage near the end. I think I was using A:M v5 at the time for the 3D, Strata MediaPaint for the fireballs and Adobe After Effects to tie it all together. The music is from a library we licensed. Links you can right-click on to download in QT or WMV appear on: http:…

I'm mostly just trying out this message board for the first time, but here's a model I started in V.8.5 but I found it too time consuming to work out all the smartskin issues(eg.- how the heck do you get the cheek to deform properly when the shoulder is "shrugged" at the same time?) Would the newest version of AM for Mac make it much easier?-but I mean in actual practice, not just in theory. Does anybody know of a good example of this sort of pudgy biped that has been animated successfully in AM? Please click here Thanks. Paul

A 32lb carronade to be exact. As would have been found on a 17th/18th century sailing vessel. Specifically the USS Constitution. This is truly my first solid attempt at modelling, animating, skinning etc. I have played around some with 3ds max but never really gotten into it. Because of the all encompasing nature of this software, it makes it more fun. The model is not quite compete, there is an elevation screw which adjusts the elevation +/-10 degrees, and a carriage of sorts that belongs on the back which allows a limited amount of horizontal motion. Plus some small details. I need some feedback. I know my materials are horrid and the bevelling leaves …

This is something I've been putting off doing because I knew just bump maps weren't going to cut it for such exposed and prominent tread lugs. But the worst part was joining all the loose splines for each rotated segment copy. Although I simplified the tread pattern on the real tire, it's still not absolutely crease free and at 3156 it's a bit patch heavy but it should hold up to an arm's length inspection. Still working on materials. truck wheel WIP

This was a landscape I did while working on a modeling method for tree's I was rather proud of the lighting as things like lighting and texturing aren't my strong points. The tree modelling method was from a tutorial. Unfotunately I can't remember the name of the person who wrote it. I would appreciate any feedback you have. I know the image isn't really complicated or anything I tend to very simple scenes in my work. But I thought the ambience in this one was perfect for what I was going for.

Here's my digger model - rotoscoped from some photos I took from a roading construction site. I'm hoping to animate it for a job I'm doing at the moment. I'm trying to do the tracks at the moment, and I'm trying to bone them so I can get the tracks to turn (as in the excellent tutorial for tank tracks on the AM Resource site).

Well, (no pun intended) this is another scene from my next Bella Bear story that I am currently making a pig's ear of texturing. I am pleased with the candlesticks (need some smoke) but I am in a bit of a dialemma. Should I used real-life photos (the walls) in conjuction with shaders and painted textures, or not use real-life imagery and generate it all by my own fair hand? In this scene the stairs and doorframe are the wrong colours - they need to match the wall, which need the tiling removed. But you're thoughts fellow Hashers please

Here's a model I've been working on for the past week, nearly finished. It's a member of the "Great Race", from The Shadow Out of Time by HP Lovecraft (my wife has ceremoniously named it "Lemon Head"). Click here for a short animation test (1.45 MB MPEG-1 with sound). The walk cycle (slither cycle?) needs a little work, and the head neads a little more detail, but overall I'm pretty happy with it. During the process of rigging this model, I have arrived at the conclusion that tentacles are a pain in the ass, but dynamic constraints kick ass.

Hi - I recently picked up a couple of 3D jobs, and wanted to thank everyone who answered my several posts to help get the projects completed, your time and help is much appreciated. I was also inspired by Rascular to put together a business website seperate from my website design business for 3D animated characters. Any comments about the site to improve it bad or good would be appreciated. http://www.3dcharacteranimation.biz/ Thank again - Eric

Here's a sword I'm working on. The weird marks along the blade are actually runes, but jpeg & the low resolution sorta kill the effect. Also, the god-awful background is for testing reflectivity . Any suggestions or really harsh, scathing critiques are welcome.

Here is my first try at modelling one of my own concepts. It's supposed to be quite stylised which is why it looks a little like a rat with small ears. I need a little advice on the best way to model a mouth into my head. I have tried modelling the lower jaw separately and then joining it but I end up with some nasty peaks. I don't want to play around with the gammas too much as it will eventually be a dancing bear (that sings a little) and i don't want any unpredictable motion. Anyway, I know that it's not much so far, but here it is.

Hi Folks! When I first looked at KeeKat i thought the character had oblong eyes and the pupils were constrained to the surface, upon closer inspection I see that the eyeballs are round and the pupils are constrained to a given space. I have a character that has oblong shaped eyes and i either need to constrain the pupil to the surface or create a textures of pupils that I can aim with nulls. I have included a diagram of the current problem I have with the surface constraints. Although the pupil rotates around the eyeball, the surface of the pupil (image1) never seem attached (image 2,3) my only solution was to add depth to the pupil to create a illusion of unifo…

This is an exciting time, I'm in the process of beginning a new model. My modeling skills are not the greatest, and I often find myself in frustration as my mesh ceases to flow correctly. If anyone else ever experiences similar dilemmas, try this, it helps. I drew a few quick sketches of what I thought I wanted, took what I liked from each of them, and ended up with a drawing shown in the first upper left image. I then drew out better rotoscopes, clarifying just what I wanted, and making sure I had a clear idea of where I was going in specific areas. I then suppressed the extremely strong urge to jump on the computer and start modelling. I dug through some things and foun…

Hey all. I'm looking for a little input for my little, on-going merman project. I am now attempting/struggling to texturemap the head. Jim Talbot's video tuts have been really helpful in this capacity, since I needed to know how A:M allowed the magical UV process to take place. But from a more artistic standpoint, I really don't know what to do. What sort of skin tone would look best? How thick should a person lay on shading and facial features? Does he need color mapping for wrinkles, or should I leave that to bump mapping? Any input is quite welcome. Here are some pics. This is not really a "wip", it's more of a "w-asap". My entry in yesterday's Animation Showdown at digitalrendering.com. where_is_it_320.mov (270K QT Sorenson 3) Basically, you get four hours to animate, render and submit a character animation on the assigned theme. This time the deal was "Where Did I Put That?" My attempt is not fab, but some of the entries often are knockouts. It's also fun to see how others interpret the topic. Showdowns happen every wednesday. If you've got your character (or Thom) rigged, and can think/work fast you must give it a try.

Something a little different...I hope it's okay for me to show this off here. I just finished writing this program for one of my classes. All of the modeling was done in AM, exported to .3ds, and then imported into my program. I was pretty happy with the way it turned out. Pics and description are here: https://mywebspace.wisc.edu/vandeweghe/web/...case/code5.html I'm working on getting an executable uploaded so you guys can try it out (it looks lots better in motion), but I'm running into problems with Visual Studio. On a different note, did anyone ever release updated exporters to .3ds or something similar? I've done a few tests with textures, and i…

Using v105n On several occasions when I've tried to hook a spline, it shoots past the target spline and attaches itself to another spline, sometimes with a hook and sometimes with a CP. In the past I've been eventually able to get it hooked where I need it, but this time no matter what I do it just keeps attaching itself to another hooked spline further on. I've included a couple of screenshots showing where it's supposed to go and where it actually ended up. I had even locked and hidden all the CP's outside of the area shown in the first image, yet it still attached itself to the same hooked spline. Can anyone tell me how to get around this, or why it's happeni…
