The latest addition to my railroad needs long sheets of diamond pattern steel plate. I wanted these plates to look well used, slightly rusty and to have varying amounts of dried dirt on them. I wasn't looking forward to building the material because while it's relatively easy to build show-room new surface finishes, I had never been happy with any of my attempts at old steel and procedural dirt looked too much like soft edged clouds. I thought the only way I could get hard edged dirt would be a decal. However after much experimentation I've got a material that's more than adequate. At this distance it's fairly convincing. The diamond pattern is a tiled normal decal. …

One of the things I love doing in AM is taking a model I've used for a while and changing it around as the script calls. In this pic, Super Mega Fox gets a bit hulked out, for an upcoming scene. The hard part is redoing so many smart skins. Bulking her up required many more splines and naturally, the old smart skins wouldn't work with that, so I'll be working on this for a bit. Even more, this is only phase one of the muscle enlargement. Phase three should be hilarious, since I was thinking along the lines of Tex Avery, when it comes to overdoing things.

This was the hardest model I've ever attempted. For mechanical models it's relatively easy to find front, side and top reference images, not so much for 1940's movie actresses. Every time I looked at a different 3/4 view of Ann Sheridan with dramatic lighting and did a test render, I found another CP that needed a small relocation or a spline layout that needed a rethink. I can see why 3D scanning of an actor's face is so appealing for a digital replacement. I still don't think the likeness is convincing but I'm sending her to Hair & Makeup anyway! (Maybe I'll say I'm modeling Ann Sheridan's stand-in. 😄 )

Ok, so. I'm assuming that somebody knows of the upcoming "space" animation contest. And I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm trying to have the camera zoom out in one part of the animation. Its supposed to start zooming out slowly, and then speed up. but, instead, before it starts to go faster, its zooms in. And I can't figure out why. its mind-boggling . So, if anyone could help, that would be really cool. Thanks, robert

Well, I've got most of the things up on my website up that I want. I just needs some tweaking and a lot more (new) content. I hope to have time to actually work some on my short during the next month, so I expect some new stuff within a month. I guess the address would be good. http://www.tartpi.com/ Feedback is always welcome.

So...I've been modeling a new character. But I started to work on the foot, and I completed a little more than half of it. But for some reason there is an area which is protruding from it, that always ends at 0,0 on the grid; no matter where I put the rest of the foot. This happened to me before and I was able to fix it. But this time, the "thing" has no CP's or splines or anything. I don't know how it got there, but it just won't go away. Its totally brought my work to a screeching halt. If Someone could solve this mystery I would appreciate it very much. Thanks! Robert Lazzarini

I've had flash for 7 days now, and I wanted to make something as an exercise. I've also wanted a nice website for a while, so I put the two together and made a flash website for myself. Any feedback would be really appreciated. http://murc13.homestead.com/files/index.htm All of the 3d work in the gallery was made with AM.

Following up on robcat's post earlier, here is my attempt at a "Dive!" for the showdown on digitalrendering's forums. http://www.hash.com/users/zachbg/blog/DiveTest3.mp4 Quicktime 6 required, 350K, 5 seconds. Animation and rendering done in four hours as per the showdown rules. He must be wearing rockets on his shoes, huh? Comments and crits always welcome. Zach "I can't tie my shoes in four hours..."

Hello! I am very new to a:m. I'm using A:M 2001, 8.5p+ and i'm trying to create spheres. i understand the concept and everything is going ok, except my half-circle, that i'm going to lathe into the sphere looks a bit jagged, not perfectly curved. the odd thing is, if i close the project & reopen it, it then looks fine. so, i create my sphere. so far so good. if i look at it in shaded mode, it no longer looks perfect, nor does it in wireframe any longer either, unless i save, close, and reopen the project. anyone know why this is happening or how to get around it? thanks!

Ok so, I'm working on a school project and I'm having some trouble. I haven't had too much experience in the choreography window. I have an action where my character is walking (and its constrained to a path). Then I want him to stop and do another action. What I've been doing is importing the other action after the first one is complete. But instead of stopping, both actions end up occuring on the same path. And instead of the first action finishing at the end of the path, it finishes in the middle. And the part where he is supposed to stop ends up taking place over the rest of the path. I tried to explain it clearly. If anyone can help I would greatly appreciate it…

Hello, i am working on a complex face Modell, and i need most of the features to be real geometry (Nose, region under nose etc.). Therefore my model is quite complex. Now i have the problem, that the surface tends to have small little bumps (see picture). I need to get rid of these, and have a very smooth surface, like a fotomodell? Is ther any cool and easy way to archive this aside from try and error ... ? Thanks for helping me out on this! Heiner

Now that I have finally figured out how to post a picture.....I will post my first true model. I did this some time late last year and have had no time do to much more than troll the boards. However, as luck would have it I just ran across a copy of The Animation:Master 2000 Handbook with the CD still in it at a local used book store (Mckays for Will Sutton and anyone else in or around Chattanooga, TN). It was only $6.00. Even though it is for version 8.0 and I am using 10.5, so many of the things that are in there still apply that I feal like it is Christmas. I get to play with my new toy again and actually have a clue what I am doing. Back to my gun. I did try …

Hey, I'm taking random objects and and modeling them in A:M...ya know why? because Its summer and I have nothin better to do . (plus its fun) I just made a soap dispenser, but I cant make the right brass/gold color so I just kept it uncolored except for the bottom. I think I'm gonna end up making a still with the things I'm making too. I'm also making a new character, but I wanna finish it's hands and head before I show it. I have never uploaded a pic to this forum so i dont know if itll work, if it does then awesome if doesnt....then I'll try it again

Here's my picture of how to deal with a 5-pointer. Note that the spline running through the corner terminates in a CP not attached to any others, the "dangling CP" that has left common memory: Refer to http://www.hash.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6213 for the rest of the discussion if you've ignored the 'ignore me' topic.

Hey- Meet Harriet. Good Side: V 11's hair modelling tools are quite nice, and I love the way they react to your characters motion...I'm having fun and look forward to rigging Harriet with TSM and the new CP weights... Bad Side: This model keeps crashing the renderer. On this test I was lucky to get 69 frames rendered, but it was a 150 frame chor. I set it to render overnight, usually, and come in to see A:M has crashed. Today I came in and saw it had crashed so I figured maybe I should download the latest version, 11E. So I did, and then went to open this project. Crash. So I uninstalled v11 and cleaned out the registry. Reinstalled, open proj-crash, open model-…

I just created this head, starting from a lathe and then seeing where it took me. What do you think? Does it look like it will be fine to animate? And what does everyone recommend doing to the top of the head? I just took the top hole and scaled it down, is there a smoother way around this? Also what should I go about doing for eyes? Thanks, Jon cartoon0.tga

This is a bit from the revised fight scene for Duck Sauce; my awesome team has been helping me make a new version to send to film festivals. I've been posting stuff to the team occasionally, but I liked the way this one turned out enough to show it to the list. The context is that the rubber chicken and the rubber duck are fighting, as the rubber pigeon saves the pink flamingo from certain death. (And what a context that is!) http://www.hash.com/users/zachbg/blog/lowe...ndFight_mp4.mov You can see the original version of the whole film on A:MFilms. Comments welcome!
