A:M Forum Rules
GENERAL FORUM GUIDELINES
The A:M Forum is for technical support and the sharing of tips and ideas between users/prospective users of Hash software. It is moderated constantly by technical support representatives.
DO'S!
-Ask questions about the software.
-Assist other users... everyone was new at this once.
-Inform people of your version/platform when asking for help.
-Share resources; tutorials, models, textures, tips and techniques (link to useful websites).
-Post links to your work, or where your art is being used online (on websites, in games, toons', etc.)
-Search the A:M Forum and FAQ. The question you are about to ask may have already been answered.
-Organize and inform others about user groups, IRC chats, image and animation contests, job opportunities, etc.
-Discuss what you are working on and let everyone know about magazine reviews and articles that relate to your projects.
DON'TS!
-Do Not be rude or disrespectful or mean to other forum members in any way. Personal attacks will be removed.
-Do Not post bug/crash reports to the list (send bug/crash reports to http://www.hash.com/reports.
-Do Not complain about forum content. Complaints or suggestions can be sent directly to hash@hash.com
-Do Not reprimand other forum members for violating forum rules, that's the moderators job, which (unless you are a moderator) you are not.
-No complaining or whining on the forum or distribution of misinformation.
-No flames of any kind.
-No Off Topic posts. (Posts in the Off Topics section should be related to A:M in some form or fashion or benefit the A:M community as a whole).
-No soliciting of any kind without prior approval.
-No threads or comparisons related to other 3D Applications.
-No "Wish list" or feature requests, they should be sent to www.hash.com/reports for categorizing and prioritization (User requests define the future development of the software).
-No "me too!" posts
-No discussion of Hash Internal Affairs (finances, advertising, PR.)
-No posting of private email to the forum unless permission of the author is granted. (Private correspondence should remain private)
-No very general questions like: "how do I make a good 3D model" make your questions as complete and concise as possible.
If you have questions as to whether it's appropriate, send it to: support@hash.com, We'll be happy to let you know whether it is, or is not appropriate.
User Led Forum Considerations
Firstly and foremostly, please remember this is Martin Hash's forum and that it is every A:M User's primary resource for information about A:M. In order to remain relevant we need everyone's continuing support and interest.
Secondly, understand there is a distinction between A:M (the program) and the A:M forum. There are some topics and issues that are outside the scope of this forum and most can be deduced by reading through the forum guidelines. These include such things as Hash Inc internal policies, business practices, trade secrets, and specific plans for the future not yet publicly released. Each of these would be fascinating topics of their own but are better reserved for private communications with a representative of Hash Inc.
Related to the second, is purchasing, customer service and other areas outside the purview of the common user who may have no interest in such things; subjects relating to money exchanging hands are beyond the scope of the A:M Forum and often can lead to conflicts of interest between users and/or Hash Inc. (If Hash Inc cuts you a deal on volume purchasing it's really no one else's business). Likewise, individual complaints about a product or service are best remedied by going direct with Hash Inc representatives empowered to make decisions. Please allow them them the time necessary to resolve your specific issue and consider the cost of customized solutions.
This last area is likely the source of much confusion because many see the A:M Forum as the official outlet for Hash Inc... and it is. But the forum is not designed for conducting business and private matters best resolved by going to Hash Inc directly. Similarly, bug reports are best resolved by entering them directly into the A:M Reporting system.
Many problems can be easily addressed at the user level just by asking fellow users in the forum. If someone at Hash Inc suggests the forum as a source, it is very likely a problem can be easily resolved. For tougher issues there is even more reason to take the issue directly to the source... you don't want the issue discussed... you want it resolved quickly.
Finally, remember that we want to pass this forum on to future moderators and generations of A:M Users in the absolute best condition possible. A:M is just that good a program and is worthy of our consideration.
Thanks for making the A:M Forum a great community.

I am in the Technical Reference manual studying the section "Hair Material with Multiple Attributes" page 39. I understand how hair works and how to set up a hair system, but for the character I am working on now I want to step it up a notch. The sample has a hair system with a CellTurb combiner with 2 different colors to give it a great 2 tone more realistic look. I added the Hair system w/ 2 emitters (one grey) and added the cellTurb with 2 attributes - similiar to what they did - orange and brown. The image I have below look nothing like the realistic fur ball in the book... what am I not getting here? Thanks - Eric

Hi - to get some more modelling experience, I am working on my first "real" character who actually has a mouth that isn't against a flat face. ;-) The rat is a request from my 3 year old - All well as modelling experience I am trying to get more experience with hair. I like it so far, but I would like to add longer scattered light brown colored hairs that match his feet and hands throughout his entire body to give me a scruffy look. I currently have the following set up for the body hair Do I set up another hair system or another hair emitter under this one - or a new material? Or is it even possible to do? Any help would be appreciated - also and s…

I'm having trouble making my character jump from one platform to the next. I made a jumping action sequence in action. In choreography I made a path from one pad to the next, I gave the character a constraint to the path, drag and dropped the action sequence onto the character but when i pressed play the character did the jumping sequence still on the first pad then popped onto the next. Can anyone help me?

Hi - I am working on a new gorilla character and creating several hair systems - is it possible to turn the hair systems "off" - while the rest of the character is being modelled. I wanted to do all the work of moving and brushing the hair particles, but didn't want to have to remove the hair systems off parts of the model while creating the rest of it - or even during an animation - it will be way to slow to animate him, with the hair turned on - didn't know if I had to do everything else with the model and do the hair last. Thanks - Eric

Hi, Everyone: I don't know if this would be a question more for the rigging forum, but I thought others must have done this before. Does anyone have any suggestions for the best way to rig a frog tongue. It needs to stretch really far and bend and twist like a rope. The character will be swung around from it. Thanks in advance for any help.

Hello all, I made a simple model, not so simple that I couldn't apply the 2001 rig to it. I'm using v13. I assigned all the bones, but the leg and foot bones disappear when I try to make an action. Also, the "Hip orientate" does not seem to stay with the leg bones, is it suppose to? Is there any other option other then rigging again?

Hi, I've gone through the "Combining CG Characters With Live Action Tutorial" here (http://www.hash.com/users/ed/tutorials/fpm/fpm.htm). I have built my shadow-catching models to scale (using a ruler on the real scene) and placed them correctly in reference to the camera. I have all the correct image properties on the shadow-catching objects and have turned Front Projection ON, but when I render them, I can see them as DARK distortions to the scene. I want the shadow, but not the CG objects darkening the areas in which they appear. I have tried bringing the "falloff" down as close to zero as possible, but the CG shadow-catching objects don't disappear into…

Hi Everyone, The other night I was working on a scene and the software crashed for some reason. Fortunately, I wrote down all of the Key Frame information, prior to the crash. It was then that I thought, what would of happened if I didn't write it down. Is there a way to save or print this information, for future use or in case of a crash? Thanks, Bob

Ok, this is driving me nuts. I've been working on this for a few days now: I'm making an introduction for a video my 4th graders are going to make. The animation is just an intro I'm doing, not the whole movie. I watched the video "constraints and compensate mode" prior to doing this: 1. I made the two models. The idea is the eraser model is going to carry in models I made of of our textbooks. 2. The Eraser model has the Hash 2001 rig, and it works...that is a whole another story. 3. I made the path, and constrained it to the model of the book. 4. I added the action the model, and it works fine Now as the model walks, the book moves rather odd. …

Hello, I am looking for a 3D character animation software that can export into Flash which is may main platform. Can AM export the animation as a sequence of images (Lightway can)? I am aware of the AVI export option and Flash capability to import AVI. importing discreet images would be more useful for me. Any comments/suggestions?

Ok, I have the clip almost done! I have the character walking through the scene. He then walks in again carrying a book. He then sets it down, and walks out. It worked, and then I got picky! I went to adjust some of the movements and now the thing does work right at all. As he was setting the book down there needed to be some adjustment. I did that in the Choreography Window. After I did, his arm went out of wack during the next walk cycle. How do you get an arm,,,,leg...etc...to go back into an action after you adjusted it?

Hi There, I'm having troubles adjusting path length verses choreography length. I start off with a new project and choreography, set the chor length to 15 seconds. Then create a simple path which is also 15 seconds. Drop an object (character) on it (I chose Turtle Tom from the Extras disk) and he moves along it just fine - does the whole path in 15 seconds (I haven't added the turtle walk yet). Now I extend the choreography length to 30 seconds, thinking the turtle will complete the path in 15 seconds, then stand still for another 15 seconds. The properties for Choreography Action 1 under both the Turtle Tom shortcut and under the Path shortcut show Chor Ran…

Greetings, Animators! I'm not yet a newbie but will likely be in short order. I just discovered AM last night, and I'm about to part with some cash! It looks like the tool I've been searching for! But I have a few questions first... I'm using a recent Intel Mac and I'm wondering about AM's render speed being how it doesn't (yet?) the dual processors on recent Macs. Any Mac users out there care to share your experience with rendering? Any other Mac-specific info you care to share would also be appreciated! Oh yeah, on more thing... Any Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) issues encountered with AM? Thanks for the help! -Steve

Hi - this is odd. I created a character - and put a bone structure in him - tested him in the resolute walk and he worked fine. I turned off the IK Let Setup to smartskin him - did that at several joints - brought him back to the main screen and turned the IK Leg Setup back on. Now when I bring him into an action or chor it is acting as if the IK Leg Setup is not on... when I pull his hips down to the ground his legs remain straight and the whole character moves down. Anyone know what is going on here, I have never had this problem?? Thanks for any help- Eric

Hello everyone! Lately I was looking around the hash pictures to see how astounding these modelers can make such 3D images look so real. (See pictures below for examples) I know how the lighting works as to making a room illuminated but how do the artists make things look soft and realistic? I really am not sure how to do it but do the artists use a certian surface texture to catch the light or do they simply soften the light up to make it bounce? Anybody know the answer or can show me some tutorials around that can help me on this topic? This is so cool

I am refreshing my memory with the online Ref Manuel for Hair/Fur http://www.hash.com/Technical_Reference/v110/Hair.htm They refer to "Stiffness" below - I am just not seeing that setting in the Hair System or Hair Emitters properties "Stiffness: Controls how stiff or ridged each hair strand is. The stiffer the value the less affect dynamics and forces such as gravity has on the hair. This value is a percentage to adjust all the child Hair Emitter's Stiffness values." Greetings all! While I have puttered around with A:M since 2000 I haven't really done anything other than some interesting stills but my real interest is animation. So here are my questions: 1. Is the A:M 'school' where you upload your progress through the tutorials and have them graded still in effect or am I too late? 2. The TWO project was begun in 2005 as a three year project so I assume it must be in its final stages. Considering the fact that I still must go through the A:M tutorials and that I hold down a full time job is it too late for me to hope to contribute to this project? Finally, a side note: I noted somewhere that there was still some t…

Hi - I just upgraded to v15 w/ fluids - but I haven't has a minute to run through any of the fluids tutorial... I have a new client that contacted me that owns a plastics manufacturing company and they produce bottles that he wants an animation of one filled w/ fluid and have it tipping up and porring into a second compartment on the container - basically it lets you measure out a certain amount. My question is for anyone that has been playing around w/ fluids - is this something that can be done - having the fluid/water starting in the bottle about 3/4 full and pouring it out?
